Applications bounce once, never open.....

All of a sudden a lot of my applications will bounce ounce and stop, never even try to open or anything. It tends to be most of the applications that are tied to internet like safari, ichat, itunes, etc. I could not open these so I kept restarting my computer and things got worse. It got to the point where nothing functioned and the computer wouldn't even start up. Luckily I was able to perform a fsck -fy to get the comp to start up fine again, but applications still won't open. Please help!
Safari, ichat, software update, aperture, itunes are ones i found so far that won't start

  • My Photoshop Icon Bounces but never opens...??

    Hi there,
Need a bit of help. I bought a new MacBook Pro and they transfered all my programs from my old Macbook onto my new one, including my Adobe CS3 package. Now when i go to open it the PS icon on the toolbar is there and it bounces as if it were going to open but then never does?
I no longer have my installation discs as they got misplaced during a transAtlantic move but i do have my Photoshop serial number? What can i do to get my photoshop CS3 back?
Thanks for your time and help
    Jess

    Does this help?
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3439349
Other than that are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, font validation, etc.)?

  • Dock problem: Apps won't open, they bounce once and don't open.

    hi,
my ex-girlfriend has had problems with opening up some of her programs (Mail, Safari, iChat, iTunes, Msn-Messenger, Skype) on the dock. They bounce on the dock once and then don't open at all. She said that it just happened after a recent update (17/9/08).
I've been trying Disk Utility and this comes up with:
    +_First Aid Failed_.+
+Disk Utility stopped verifying 'Macintosh HD' because the following error was encountered:+
+The underlying task reported failure on exit+
Underneath it says: 1 HFS volume checked, Volume needs repair.
I have also used Disk Warrior and that also came up with the same error that this person got (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1459800&tstart=4).
I've even tried using fsck but that wasn't successful. I think I might need to work from disk utility from the start-up disks but was wodnering would I ahve to first back-up all the stuff that she has on her laptop at the moment???

I compiled what I could find on the application bouncing once problem.
I made it for Safari but much of it may apply to other Applications.
    - Create a new user account on your machine.
    - Log in under that new user account.
    - Try to launch Safari.
If Safari launches under the new user account,
Then it's likely a preference file or some Safari add-on (e.g. "Application Enhancers" PithHelmet or Saft) running under the original account that's preventing it from launching. Remove them, if possible and clear the cache.
If Safari does not start under the new user account the same way it doesn't under your original account,
Deletion and reinstallation will be needed:
    1) Back up your bookmarks to a safe location. Your Safari bookmarks are in Your Home/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist. Copy the Bookmarks.plish file to a flash drive, or somewhere safe.
    2) Download Safari from http://www.apple.com/safari/download/ and save it where you saved your bookmarks backup.
    3) Download an application deletion software, such as AppCleaner or AppZapper. A simple Google search will provide you with download locations.
    4) Once you have installed the application deletion software, run it to delete Safari. The application should find and delete all files related to your Safari install. This is why it is important to save your safari download package and your bookmarks backup to a flash drive off of your system. If you did not do this, make sure to uncheck these files from the deletion list.
    5) Restart your computer and install Safari once again. Once you have installed it, you should copy your bookmarks file to the new Safari's location. It will be located at "Your Home/Library/Safari/". If their is already a Bookmarks.plist in the Safari folder, then replace it with the backup.
If deletion and reinstallation doesn't help,
    Perform networking diagnostics.

  • Photo Boot doesn't want to open up, 10.4.11, bounces once and then closes.

This error is what shows up in the Console after I try to open Photo Boot. The program itself just bounces once and then nothing happens (it crashes).
    dyld: Library not loaded: /System/Library/Frameworks/ScriptingBridge.framework/Versions/A/ScriptingBridge
    Referenced from: /Applications/Photo Booth.app/Contents/MacOS/Photo Booth
    Reason: image not found
This happens in two iMac Intel Core Duo, with Tiger 10.4.11.

    Hi Adrian
the error literally means what it says -part of photobooth is trying to open a file /System/Library/Frameworks/ScriptingBridge.framework/Versions/A/ScriptingBridge but it can't & clearly photobooth won't run without it.
you can look in /System/Library/Frameworks/ScriptingBridge.framework/Versions/A/ with Finder to confirm that the file is missing; sometimes just one file disappears like that.
However, perhaps ignore the above, since a quick search for where you'd find the scriptingbridge framework to download or reinstall from disk suggests that it was never in Tiger at all - and that you might be running Photobooth 2 ( a Leopard app ). do a get info on Photobooth via Finder & see what version it says... or check the full crash report.

  • ISight Bounces Once and Doesn't Open

Let me start off by saying, I bought this computer originally with OS X Tiger, then upgraded to Leopard. Upon finding out that my Java editor no longer worked (Since I'm a student I have to use the recommended software -- Dr. Java), along with may other problems that occured, I decided to downgrade back to Tiger. I did "Archive and Install" on both occasions.
Now, ever since I downgraded back to Tiger, Photo Booth has never worked. Note that I do have Iris, and iSight itself works, just not PhotoBooth. It just bounces once and stops.I have no idea what might be causing this, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I hope this is the right forum, as PhotoBooth is connected with iSight.
    Thanks,
    A new mac user.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Programinator
Check to see whether your Dock's iCon might be the problem.
Click and hold on your Dock's Photo Booth iCon. When the contextual menu opens, choose "Remove from Dock". (Or you can just drag the iCon off the Dock and drop it on your desktop.)
Then put a new Photo Booth iCon in your dock. (Open your applications folder and drag and drop that Photo Booth iCon to your dock. The original will stay in your Applications folder.)
Does it work right with the new iCon in the Dock?

  • Appleworks bounces once and doesn't open

I can't seem to get Appleworks to open- if I click on the icon or go to applications and click it there, it bounces once and then stops. It does not open. Any thoughts? It seems to be a different problem than recent "won't open" subjects. I have not changed it in any way or reloaded, etc.
I'm using version 6.2.9 on my ibook G4. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Scott,
You are having a problem with a completely different program, so your problem is not the same. Other than my suggestions to purplesally to use Disk Utility to repair permissions & to create a new Dock icon for AppleWorks, the solutions are unlikely to assist with a problem with Mail. Since we never heard back again from purplesally, we don't even know if those suggestions worked.
When looking for solutions to a problem to a specific program, the best place to start is a forum for that program or your operating system. For you I suggest the Printing & Faxing forum in the Category: Mac OS X v10.3 & earlier & then choosing the Mail & Address Book forum or the Using OS X forum.
However, some basic OS X troubleshooting/maintenance steps might help you. So, the first thing I suggest is repairing permissions using Disk Utility. Then, unless you leave your Mac on 24/7 & not asleep, run a utility to run the UNIX cron routines & clean caches. Two free ones are YASU & OnyX.
Also, make sure your hard drive isn't too full. It depends on how you use your computer, but for most normal users a minimum of 5 gigs free space at all times after installation is recommended. Power users may need more.
If this still doesn't work, repairing your hard drive with Disk Utility may help. Start up your Mac from the first Panther instal disk. Then, instead of running the installer, go to the Installer menu & choose Disk Utility. Select your hard drive in the left-hand panel & click Repair Disk. When it is done, quit Disk Utility then quit Installer & restart your Mac.

  • Itunes wont open after updating. Bounces once in dock?

I just did a long overdue update to latest itunes. Now it wont open, icon in dock bounces once and nothing? I've done disk permissions repair, no chnage. Any suggestions appreciated?

    iTunes Command to Open
    Open Terminal
    /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes

  • Mail bounces once then won't open

I guess that kinda sums it up. Mail, when you click on it in the dock, bounces once, then just sits there staring at me, and fails to open. I've run a Disk repair thing just in case it was accessibility, but that hasn't helped.
I looked at it in Terminal and got this:
dyld: /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail malformed library: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/HTMLDisplay.framework/Versions/A/HTMLDisplay (not a Mach-O file, bad magic number)
    Trace/BPT trap
I haven't a clue what this means! I don't suppose anyone knows how I can restore access to Mail?
    Thanks in advance!

It means that there is something wrong with your Mac OS X installation.
What does “I've run a Disk repair thing” mean? Quit all the applications and verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using (which you haven’t provided and doesn’t appear in your profile either), unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
You may also have to reinstall the following Security Update, which includes most of the security updates released after Mac OS X 10.3.9:
Security Update 2007-007 for Mac OS X 10.3.9
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Bounces in the dock, but never opens?

Lately my iMac seems to be having errors or something where I can't open any application, it just bounces in the dock and sits there. It doesn't affect the applications that are already open, but once I've quit they're gone. That forces me to restart to get my computer functional again, but in order to do that I have to press and hold the power button because it won't shutdown by itself. All the menus go away and it seems like its going to...but it just sits there like an expensive brick. Anyone know how to fix this?

    Hi--
You have Directory damage to your hard disk. There are two programs that can fix this:
    Disk Utility
    Alsoft Disk Warrior
If you have an Intel Mac, you must use the first one. Start from your Mac OS X Install Disc and run Disk Utility. Select your hard drive at the left, and choose "Repair Disk".
If you have a PowerPC (G3, G4, or G5) buy Disk Warrior. It is much more robust than Disk Utility and is much more effective. Refer to the product documentation that comes with it.
If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.

  • Final Cut Pro Won't Open, bounces once in dock

I am running Final Cut Studio 2 and everything has worked perfectly for about 6 months. When i started up my computer today I clicked to open Final Cut Pro and i t just bounced once in the dock, then did nothing. All the other studio programs(motion, soundtrack, color etc...) open up just fine. I have not run any updates in a few weeks, infact, that computer isn't even hooked up to the internet. I tried deleting the preferences, opening up form the applicaitons folder and double clicking a project file and final cut still just bounces once in the dock and then does nothing. A safe boot didn't do the trick either. Does anyone have any ideas as far as what i could try short of doing a re install of final cut studio?

    tried deleting the preferences ...
When you say "tried" do you mean you did? which files did you trash, or which app did you use to do it? I'm liking "Preference Manager" for this at the moment (http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm)
Also as a troubleshooting step you might want to create a new OS X user account, log in to it, and then see if FCP will launch in that new account.

  • Appleworks bounces once, but will not open

PLEASE HELP ME! my appleworks will NOT open and i honestly have no idea how to fix it! whether i click on appleworks in the dock or from recent items, it just bounces once and then does not do anything. help would be greatly, grealty appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
My first step would be to go to the Finder.
Open a new Finder window, click on the Home icon with your user name under it, then Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting points > Recent Items.
Select and all or most of the items in this folder and drag them to the Trash.
Close the Finder window and try launching AppleWorks.
Should that step not solve the problem, try Michael's suggestions.

i received an error message "iTunes requires 64-bit mode" says to go into my iTunes application and 'uncheck' the 'open in 32-bit mode' checkbox - i went into the application and the box was not checked anyway so why am i getting this prompt?  Never happened before. yesterday did the sofware update for maverick.

Thank you for your response, Chris. But I'm afraid I have to disagree. There are native 64 bit versions of iTunes available for OSX and Windows.
In a 64 Bit Windows environment native 64 Bit Applications install the DLL's in a directory called "Program Files" and a directory called "Program Files (x86)" (32 Bit applications only use the ladder).
iTunes 9 is consistent with this behavior - and it identified itself to the system as a 64 bit application (meaning it's process appears without a "*32" tag on it).

  • Quit all open dock applications at once?

Is there a way to quit all open dock applications at once? I find it time-consuming to go in and quit applications I have used in the dock one at a time.
May be I don't understand why they even stay open after I quit what I was doing with them? Is it possible to set it up that way? I find it is not very Mac-like
to have to go in and quit 5 or 6 items in the dock one at a time. Can you please shed some light on this for me? Thank you for your time and patience.

No, but there is an alternative.
Press command+tab to show the application switcher. While keeping the command key held down, you can press q on a selected application to quit it. The only one you can't quit is the Finder (as this is the application that shows you your Desktop).

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.
You can try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.
