Applications disabled after clearing caches, etc.

My computer had begun to run slowly, so I followed advice in these pages and installed and ran an application called Cocktail: I ran the daily, weekly and monthly service operations and cleared caches and logs. Now my computer runs much better, but two applications that I have had for some time no longer work. One is an RSS news reader called PluckyX, the other is CarbonErrors. In each case the application's icon has changed.
In the case of PluckyX, it now tries to open using Script Editor, resulting in error messages, and I cannot find any other application to open it with. PluckyX is no longer made and its creator cannot be contacted, but I downloaded another copy from VersionTracker, with the same negative result. I have not yet tried to find a new copy of CarbonErrors.
Can anyone please suggest a solution? It is PluckyX in particular that I should like to revive.

If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers and other plug-ins from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 uses Safari 3.0.4 which is not a beta. If Safari 3.0.4 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 2 when running 10.4.11 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.0.4 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail, Dashboard widgets etc also rely.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here, among others, for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them and go the developer's sites to see if new versions are available for Safari 3.0.4.
In your case PluckyX and Finale are the suspects.
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2007-009.1.1, which also deals with the Quicktime/Flash issues you may have experienced, as well as the latest Java update.

Firefox 4 wont load page completely or play videos on youtube and ive noticed its always after clearing cache. after a while it will start working properly but its kind of annoying. Know what the problem is?

oh, there is still a pending issue with youtube unfortunately. I can play videos individually but if I click on a video that is part of a playlist it lags and then goes to a blank space where the video should be. Is that a flash player issue? So, I can play videos individually but not playlists.

Clearing the cache might not help, try the following:-
    1) Cross check is 'Show my windows and tabs from last time' checked (see attached file 'Open tabs from last time'). Also refer to this website wrt 'session restore'

  • My Safari keeps crashing even after clearing cache/history/etc. Help?

I have tried resetting, clearing cache, and erasing the history. I'm not sure what is going on with my Safari. I did notice I kept getting those "Mackeeper" popups, but I never downloaded it or anything. Could this be the issue? I have looked through other threads and couldn't find a solution to the problem. Thanks!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Removing Private Browsing, Clear Cache, etc. options from Safari

This was discussed earlier, but the situation just came back up here at school as students have been found clearing history etc. to cover their tracks. This was originally posted by Yang in May 2006.
"If you have the developer tools installed, or more specifically, Interface Builder, you can easily remove the 'Private Browsing' and 'Reset Safari' menu-items. Create a copy of Safari and browse to '/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/'. Open MainMenu.nib in Interface Builder. In the template of the menu bar which appears, browse to and highlight each menu-item and hit backspace to delete. Save and quit. That Safari application package will now be missing the menu-items.
You can replace the original Safari package with the modified one, and maybe have the unmodified version in the 'Applications' folder of an administrator's home folder.
Unfortunately, the 'Clear History' menu item seems to be generated dynamically. I can't seem to find the reference to it in Safari's resources. However, that said, I believe there are more elegant solutions to tracking a user's browsing history. In fact, it might be advisable to look at third-party solutions - ones which write history to a separate file. For instance, even if the menu-items are missing, it is possible to simply trash the relevant .plist after each browsing session to remove all traces of its history."
In doing that, I found that while you can't remove the dynamically created "Clear History" from the History Menu, you can open "/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Localizable.strings" with Project Builder from the Developers Tools and edit what shows in the menu. Just change what is after the = sign for the items you want to change and save it. It may not stop the practice completely, but it will slow things down. (Students may think twice before selecting a menu option that says "Permanently Archive History".) This doesn't change the function, just what it is called on the screen. I also removed "Empty Cache..." from the menu and changed the label and icon for History when you "View All Bookmarks" to reduce deleting them through that method. It makes them harder to find.
Just be sure you are modifying a copy of the App so you keep the original. I then used Remote Desktop to copy the modified application into the Applications folder on the student computers. So far, only limited testing, but everything seems to work at this point.
By the way, this was my first experience with Developers Tools and they really aren't that daunting if you think things through first.

Seems I'm out of touch with school day issues.
It appears you would rather snoop on behavior and punish Web "wrongdoers" than let students imagination and a few "rules" guide their Web experiences.
If a child is smart enough to know how to "cover their tracks" then they've learned something wrong from your instructors.
You may just want to take away their browsers and replace them with:
    http://www.makienterprise.com/kggg/kidsgogogo.html
You also mention Apple Remote Desktop in your post. It allows you to view what any machine is doing.
Instructor is not at a machine taking a "peak" over the students shoulder? Worked when I was in school.

The site is likely geo-targeting your location from your ISP assigned IP Address. See the explanation here http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001043.htm or do a Google search for geo-targeting.

  • I've read others' posts on this issue and still need an answer that works. Safari keeps dropping wireless; no issues on a Dell laptop with XP in same room. Cleared cache, etc. - any other ideas?

I've read others' posts on this issue and still don't have an answer that works!  Safari keeps dropping wireless connection every 5 - 10 minutes (it's gotten progressively worse over the last month). My husband, sitting 10 ft across from me, has no issues on a Dell laptop with XP so doesn't appear to be the router or ISP. Safari v5.0.6 Mac OS 10.5.8. Cleared cache, tried kill commands in Terminal, restarts, etc. Only restarting seems to keep it at bay for a period, but then it will start again. Any other ideas?

You posted a question about a problem connecting a Mac to a wireless router. You have an old Dell laptop that works well with that router.
I pointed you to a brief discussion with another poster who had a problem connecting a Mac to a wireless router. He had an old Dell laptop that worked well with that router. I suggested he upgrade the router firmware. He upgraded it, and the problem was solved. Another poster in that thread did the same thing, and his problem was also solved. Within the last day or two, I made the same suggestion to a third poster in another thread, and his problem was solved too.
Conclusion: Upgrading the router firmware helps sometimes.
If I understand your response, you think that checking for a firmware update isn't even worth a try. Am I missing something?

  • Flash profiling of memory after clearing cache of home-made rsl files

I have a question about the flash memory profiling tools.
Once I have completely loaded a swf file into my browser, complete with multiple home-made gigantic RSLs (not flex swzs), the memory footprint of my application is small; I have not instantiated any of the objects in the RSL files.  However, as stated earlier, the RSLs are very big files; full of embedded assets.
If I clear my browser cache, those gigantic RSL files are deleted.
Then, when I use my flash app to create objects from the RSL, flash profiler shows my memory footprint increase.  That makes sense; I just made some large objects.
But from where did flash load those objects?
    I deleted the RSL files.
The flash profiler showed I was using hardly any memory, suggesting that the class files were not loaded into memory already.
Are the files kept in a secondary file cache?  Is there a second memory cache?  Can I profile its size?

    1. No. and the main footprint of a bitmap is probably is per-instance so the instance cost is probably what you're interested in.  Anything embedded is also a class and the first time you access the class the Class category should go up by a bit.
    2.  When your app requires an RSL, the SWF for the RSL is loaded into memory (in a buffer you can't see from the profiler), expanded and parsed (into even more memory that you can't see from the profiler).  Then as you access classes from the RSL, the profiler should show growth in the Class, Object and Function.  If you statically link just the code you need, the amount of memory to load the SWF and parse it will be smaller since it doesn't need space for classes you won't need, but after that it is the same.  The advantage of the RSL is that most folks end up using 200K or more from the RSLs so that's a download cost you pay the first time you run the app.  The Flex RSLs are pretty well deployed so your chances of having savings is pretty good.  Private RSLs for your app will do no good unless there is another app on the same domain that uses the RSLs.  See the modules presentation on my blog for more info
    3.  The profiler does not show System.totalMemory.  Even that number isn't the whole measure.  We're currently fans of PrivateBytes to measure total weight of the app.  But it depends on what problem you're trying to solve.

  • Missing stuff/altered settings after clearing cache

So I wanted to clear up disk space by clearing up the cache. I had not done this before so I did it for the first time. I cleared up the caches from both the main Macintosh HD device and my user name. I went to the Library folder, then to the cache folder, selected all, and put all the stuff in the Trash and emptied it. Then I re-started my computer.
The problem is, after I restarted I noticed that some things were missing. All my desktop images were gone. Even though they were all the default images that came with the computer, I liked the default space image. The color of the menu bar on top (where you see the apple icon, file, edit , ect.) changed from the default light gray color to now a light blue color. I tried to change the color by going to system preferences and then to appearances. But I only have two choices, Blue and Graphite. When I change to Graphite, there is no difference. Also, all my widgets are gone. I tried to look for those widgets but can't find them on the apple website.
What I did to try to fix this problem, I inserted the applications install CD that came with the computer and re-installed the applications but the stuff was still missing. I have not tried to re-install  MAC OS X because right now I don't have a way to backup my files. For those who cleared their cache like I did; did anybody have things missing? And how can I delete the cache without affecting the settings of my computer??

Deleting the cache files shouldn't have had the effects you describe, so I don't know what really happened. What I do know is that you should do no more work with the computer until you have a backup solution in place. Without it, you are inevitably going to lose all your data, and there will be nothing anyone can do to help you. Shut down the computer now. Don't turn it on again until you're ready to connect an external hard drive and activate Time Machine or some other backup software.

  • Repeated "Bad Request" errors after clearing cache, cookies, and cookies.sqlite

I get repeated "Bad Request" errors when submitting forms, logging in/out of sites, etc. I get this on a wide variety of sites. I have tried repeatedly clearing all cache and cookies. And I just tried disabling all my add-ons (only have 4) and then deleting the cookies.sqlite file and this still made no difference.
I am using Mac OS 10.5.8 and Firefox 5.0.1 but I have been experiencing this problem in past versions as well, maybe as far back as the latest firefox 3. My main motivation for upgrading Firefox multiple times was hoping this problem was corrected. It never used to happen, it just started happening all of a sudden. It has never occurred on Safari and I am still able to get any site that doesn't work properly to work on Safari without any problem.
I experience this on many sites. One reliable cause of it is logging out of Facebook.

You did delete all cookies.* files ?
If clearing the cookies doesn't help then it is possible that the file <i>cookies.sqlite</i> that stores the cookies is corrupted.
Rename (or delete) <b>cookies.sqlite</b> (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete <b>cookies.sqlite-journal</b> and <b>cookies.txt</b>, if they exist, in the Firefox Profile Folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile:
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)
