Applications don't respond...too often

Hi Leopards,
Since a couple of weeks I am confronted with a problem that makes my MacPro looking like a Windows machine.
Every now and then, but certainly too often, an application hangs. Today it was the installation of a Microsoft update, but it happens with Adobe Photoshop as well, and even with iTunes when syncing with my iPhone. (Well, actually, iTunes does not hang forever, but it takes several hours to sync, and I think that's a tiny bit too long).
Is this a problem that can only be solved by 'resetting' the whole computer, and what is the easiest way to do that?

Thanks for this solution. I have repaired disk permissions, but to no avail.
At this very moment an Installation program is stalling, and before that Adobe Lightroom was.
Moreover, when I tried to restart the computer after the repair, it stalled, and stalled, and stalled.
Any idea?

Hi,
I have an iBook G4 running 10.3.9.
My main account, the admin account is corrupted. Apple apps don't respond. Mail, Addressbook won't start. Safari can't connect to the internet, endless rotating wheel. System preferences not responding. It happens only with my main admin account. I set up a new account to be able to access mail and the web and it works with that. I also set up a root password and i can log in as root admin and that works as well.
I tried to repair disk permissions. No luck. However i couldn't run it from the corrupted account since disk utility didn't respond there either.
Do i really need to wipe the disk and install everything from ground up? Or there are other ways to fix this?
Or can I delete my corrupted admin account and create a new admin account?

    • Restart and test your applications.
    • If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
(Likely suspects are TimesRO & Helvetica Fractions, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
2. Check Preferences Thoroughly:
    • Go to Users/Your_Name/Library/Preferences and trash the files:
    - com.apple.ATS.plist
    - com.apple.BezelServices.plist
    Restart. If this did not help, go to Users/Your_Name/Library and drag the folder Preferences to the desktop. Restart and see if this solved the problem
    • Navigate to YourHome/Library/Preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
    • Restart and test your applications.
    • If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs."
** Note: A very important file is the "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)
3. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
    • Navigate to yourhome/library.
    • Get Info (Command + i) on the "Applications Support" folder.
    • Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
    • Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
    • Click on "apply to all"
    • If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same procedure (Command+I) for the folder names of the applications with which you are having trouble.
Note:
The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.

MacBook Pro is running slow and All applications getting not responding after every 30 seconds. I have tested by hardware test nothing wrong with hardware. I am worried Because I am totally stuck with my macbook pro Help me Please !!! I have tested by creating guest account and also new account as administrator. same thing happened. apps running. I opened activity monitor and watched carefully when any app stucked, In activity monitor there is in front of ap name following text appeared : (Not Responding) in red color. 129GB free memory, 4 GB RAM Core i3 MacBook Pro 13 inch.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

Can watching videos too often on Macbook Pro "wear down" the screen?

I watch most of my TV shows on my new macbook pro, and my mother just informed me that if you watch videos too often on a mac, that the screen can apparently wear down and die. Is this true? I'm not sure exactly what she meant by that or what could happen to my computer, but it doesn's sound exactly correct. Thanks!

Back in "the old days" when we all had green letters on black screens like in "War Games" (Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy) there were problems with "burn in" which was caused by the fact that only certain parts of the screen got used because the displays were text only. This is kind of like a prehistoric version of the problem with early plasma displays. Efforts to save CRT screens led to the creation of the ever-popular "Screen saver."
Most moms don't track display technology, so the notion remains that all video monitors are just shinier versions of last century's 15"/50 lb. wonders. Not so. Today's monitors will wear out, but most will be killed by their users long before that. Modern monitors CAN go off in color, loose brilliance, etc. over time but not specifically from movies. Notice I said movies, not video. The way we use computers these days, pretty much everything is video.

Photoshop CS2 crashes too often!!!

I run Photoshop CS2 on my Mac Pro 2x2.66Ghz Intel Xeon, 5GB RAM, with Leopard OS X 10.5.2. I keep having problem with Photoshop quitting unexpectedly too often. It's not when doing certain types of task or anything, but just crashes randomly at any point. Sometimes I work fine for hours, and sometimes I can't even last 30min.
I do have CS3 installed, but don't really open it. I use CS2 for now.
I don't understand what might possibly be the problem.

The problem is you have a version of Photoshop supported under Leopard (CS3) and you are choosing to use one that isn't instead (CS2).
Try working with CS3. Besides the better stability, you should also notice a rather dramatic improvement in speed if you are working with files of any good size.

Mail application does not respond even after forcing quit over and over

My mail application is not responding. I have forced quit at least 5 times and I still get the beach ball. This just started happening 2 days ago and now I can't access my mail at all.

You have attempted to login too often...

We recently got Wi-fi set up in our house, since then ichat will not work. I will log in and it shows that none of my friends are online, then after about 2 or 3 minutes Ichat will log out then log in rapidly on its own. Then I get a message that says. "You have attempted to login too often in a short period of time. wait a few minutes before trying to login again." Then when I try to login again the same thing happens. can anyone help?

It can be for a Number of reasons.
One speculation is that the AIM servers get busy with AIM and ICQ members and now BEBO all using the same port. (not to mention all the apps that can log into AIM and the AOL ISP Browser that can IM)
As iChat uses port 5190 on the TCP Protocol to Login but uses port 5190 on UDP to Send Files, Pics in Chats & Direct Messaging and certain Buddy List updates Buddies coming and going) - some routers and modems that route do not seem to like this double use of port 5190 (it certainly effects Zyxels devices).
Sort of related, with Devices set up to Port Forward, a port can normally only be forwarded once (to one IP), so this seems, to some that specify Protocols as well, as doing it twice.
Apple have an Article that I don't have link for about Some Netgears needing to change this port.
More generally though port 443 is open in most routers and routing modems as it is under the threshold of 1024.
All ports below this are open.
It allows Web Browsers and Mail apps to use the ports they use without any set up.
Several routers can be linked together without any input and these apps will still work.
Port 443 is used by secure Web Sites such as Banks and the like and the Apple Discussions Login Page.
It is also used by mail apps to access some mail servers.
Therefore dropping the login port in iChat to this port is likely to find it is open in any router.
Pre Leopard the above also used to apply to the way the Mac Firewall worked as ports had to be specifically listed. This means if a ports is open for one app other apps can "Piggy Back" that usage.
In Leopard the App is "Certificated" and even if it allows a Port it will not be open for another app that is nt allowed to use the firewall.

Custom TrustManager called too often

Greetings,
I'm trying to write a custom TrustManager that will display a dialog to the user giving the opportunity to accept or decline certificates. My problem is that "isServerTrusted" gets called entirely too often for this to work as desired. What happens is that isServerTrusted get's called, the user presses "No" (indicating don't accept the certificate) and I return "false". But for some reason, the method gets called a few more times, each time brining up the dialog for the same certificate.
Am I trying to put this code in the right place? Is this a known problem with JSSE 1.0.2? Why doesn't returning "false" from isServerTrusted end the handshake right there?

Hi, I am trying to disable the certificate validation using TrustManager.
Unfortunately my TrustManager does not get called.
I found some example code which did not work either.
Can you send me a snippet of the code you use to implement TrustManager?

Application becomes Not Responding on windows

Hi ,
My application shows "Not Responding" mesage in the title and the status bar, when its doind a lot of database updates in background (SQLite database).
Also, the screen of the app kind of hangs or goes white.
Any thoughts as to how to avoid the screen going white or showing "Not Responding" message. I have a ticker loading gif displaying on the screen already, which is not shown since the screen kind of hangs.

I don't know how I could have made my question any more clear -- so let me try approaching it the other way around, and refer back to your answer(s).
You've been responding by saying that it's okay for me to remove the Creative Cloud versions of my software, but I don't have any Creative Cloud versions installed! I'm not talking about that at all, I'm talking about the software for Creative Cloud itself -- I don't use it, I don't need it, I don't want it, and all it does is nag me, telling me that there's updates for it (Creative Cloud). I have the full Adobe Creative Suite 6 Design Standard bought and paid for, I have no reason nor need to "rent" any later versions, I'm just talking about the Creative Cloud software itself that got installed on my system when I installed that suite of programs.
Like I said, I don't use Creative Cloud at all -- all it does is "nag" me, and eat up space on my hard drive. When I go in my Windows Control Panel and look at my list of installed programs, there it is -- "Adobe Creative Suite" -- and it's listed separately from "Adobe Creative Suite 6 Design Standard" (of which I've only installed Photoshop, Acrobat and InDesign, basically, as those are the only programs I use at all at the moment). Can I just uninstall "Adobe Creative Suite" without it affecting "Adobe Creative Suite 6 Design Standard", i.e. my Photoshop, etc. will still work just fine, and I can still get updates and stuff? And by "updates" I don't mean get later versions of Photoshop, etc., I just mean any possible updates to the software that I do already have (that comes with Adobe Creative Suite 6 Design Standard).
I hope that makes my question a little more clear?

My tackpad don't respond to click after reinstall OS 10.5.7

The problem is
I had a mid 2009 macbook pro 13 inch with Leopard 10.5.8 OS
Yesterday I mad a decision to erase my HD and reinstall the OS again ( for no purpose ... Only I didn't do this before so I needed to re frish my Mac and would think for system upgrade )
I had the OS installing DVD with version 10.5.7 ( older than the original version on my Mac )
During the installation ; I noticed that the tackpad don't respond to any click .. Only move around normally with my moving finger but no response for clicking .. I assumed that this is normal during the installation process and will be OK after the finish .. So I used keyboard to complete the process
I realized after finishing that the problem still present ... I assumed that that is a software problem due to the older version I have or something ... So I reinstall the OS again but with the same problem
I searched the web for a solution and I noticed that a lot of people had the same problem when the upgrade the system ( that is similar to what I have )
I am afraid that it would be a hardware problem especially I live in a place with nearly no Mac expert or stores
What should I do ?!!!!!!!
Take in consideration that : the click was normally functioning before I reinstalled the OS .... Also I tried every solution from restart and SMS reset but with no response ... I didn't use a USB mouse yet and don't prefers to remove the battaries ...

IMovie causes different applications to not respond. Need help.

iMovie causes different applications not to respond. If I click on iMovies in the Finder or in iWeb, I get the rainbow wheel of death. Eventually, I have to Force Quit the app. I can no longer use iWeb as a result as each time it opens, iMovie tries to load my movies. I can't click on anything else to stop the process and eventually have to Force Quit. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the reply. Software is all up to date. The problem still persists. I'm not sure Perian is the answer. When composing an email, I clicked on the Attachment icon and it pulled up Finder. Finder appartently was set to default to my movies folder. When it did that, the same problem happened. Mail was locked up and I had to Force Quit. It may be that the iMovie library is too large?

Well my husband and i have Macs, but our isights won't connect with eachother, regardless of who sends the request it always says that "i don't respond" and yet he can video chat with my dad and i can video chat with my dad but we can't video chat with eachother, we have tried everything we feel and nothing is working. please help

My wife and I have been working with this problem for weeks. Yesterday we had a breakthrough - we took our wireless router out of the equation and did a hard connection with our home computer. It worked; this after week's of reading on here about ports, firewalls, and routers. Now I am in the process of updating my Belkin Router's firmware. We'll see, when I go back to work, if this works. After that, I plan to hard-wire (not wirelessly) connect my computer to my wireless router. Step by step, I've isolated that it's my router that my computers don't like. I have a G4 (400mhz), Belkin router 802.11g trying to connect to a powerbook 15" in my office (at work - don't know all of the hardware there). We were getting the same thing "[MYSELF] DID NOT RESPOND" on both ends, as opposed to "[OTHER PERSON] DID NOT RESPOND." I've spend 60+ minutes with Apple phone support and people in Apple stores (Genius Bar). They are stumped by this problem, but say there are too many variables at play to find the problem. The equipment works, with other people, in both locations, but not with one another.

The problem is that the 2 VMs are automatically reboot too often if I don't touch keyboard for a while. All programs running in the VM are gone and need to be restarted.
