Applications folder disappeared

I have just uploaded to Leopard from Tiger.
On watching the tutorial on Leopard, I noticed that the applications folder was loaded from the dock.
I presumed incorrectly that to do this, I could just drag the applications folder from Macintosh HD to the dock. However when I did this, the folder disappeared in a cloud of smoke! I now cannot find it,not even in the trash can.
All the applications that I use regularly are still individually in the dock, and appear to work OK.
So if anyone out there can advise me where the folder is, I would appreciate their help. Cheers-Tony

See this thread and remember to drag the folder to the right of line in the Dock (the Trash side).

  • Contents of the applications folder disappeared

    Hi
I would appreciate some help: The contents of the applications and utlities folders (viewable in Finder under Macintosh HD and under by user profile) have deleted themselves for no reason that I can work out. I do have a recent backup which I can use but I am reluctant to do anything without first understanding why this might have happened and I'd appreciate any suggestions that anybody has.
    Full details below:
While using my macbook earlier today, upon clicking on an application in the dock (Mail), nothing happened and instead the icon faded and a question mark appeared. Confused I clicked on the icon below it (iChat) and the same happened.
I opened finder to look at the applications folder and saw all my applications disappearing one by one. At this point, I though the worst and immediately turned of wifi since it looked like somebody was systematically deleting files one by one.
I am now left with a "working" version of Snow Leopard that looks identical to how it did. It is just that absolutely nothing now works (including all system preferences, disk utilites) since the contents of the applications and utilities folders are missing. All icons I click on turn to question marks, except so far finder and java (which seems to be in another folder). Other files seem to be completely intact. Finder does not find them either.
    Results of my own investigation:
    - I am fairly paranoid about computer security and so I doubt this is an attack.
    - It seems most likely to be a virus but I do run a virus checker and the computer and regularly scan the drives which has not indicated any problems. I will need to reinstall antivirus before I can check if there is any sign of a problem.
    - I've checked the disks via Snow Leopard install disk and they show no errors. Given also that the delete seems very selective (applications only) I don't think that this is a disk problem (the laptop is in any case only 9 months old).
    - I definitely did not do anything that would normally delete any programmes - I have seen a few posts about accidentally deleting the applications folder which is not what I have done (unless you think that fiddling with iCal and Mail settings just before this happened could have anything to do with it).
Thanks in advance for your help.

This extract seems to be around when it started to break. About 20 logs per second after his point.

  • Help! Captive Runtime application folder disappears after publishing.

    I'm using windows 7 and flash cs6.
I've successfully created Applications with runtime embedded before, but now with the same source files when I publish it takes ages (as normal), but when it finishes the temp files that were being created dissappear and there's no application folder.
While it's publishing three temp files are created and increase in size, but then dissappear.
I've no idea what is going on, has anyone else experiences this?
    Cheers
    Chris

This is turning into a bit of a self help therapy session.  Anyway now I've got it working again in any folder.  The only thing I think I'm doing differently is pressing publish from the main publish settings panel rather than pressin publish from the AIR settings panel...
.. Yes I've just checked and if I publish from the publish settings panel all works as it should, but if I press publish in the AIR settings panel it has this weird problem.
    Thanks Chris that's helped.
No worries Chris.  By the way do you realise you are talking to yourself.
Don't worry, I don't think anyone has noticed, but perhaps ease up on the coffee.
    Phew! Bye
    See ya

  • Applications folder disappeared in 10.4.10

Yipes. Today I went to open my Applications folder on the (what do you call it?) left-hand side of the finder window, and it was gone, baby, gone.
If I click on the hard drive icon, there's my Applications folder, but I don't remember if it should always be there as well as under the "home" icon, or if it's simply migrated (like magic) to the hard drive icon.
Can someone please help? I'm guessing if I'm experiencing this, others have gone through it, too. Can I just move it from under the hard drive icon to under the home icon? Or....?
I have a MacBook and just updated from 10.4.7 to 10.4.10 a couple of weeks ago.
    Many thanks --
    Susan

Yes you can just move the Applications folder into the sidebar underneath the Home Icon.

  • How to stop application folder form disappearing from the dock

I'm on MAC OS 10.6.7 on my Macbook 7.1.  My applications folder disappeared from the dock.  I can drag a new copy from the Mac Hard Disk folder to the dock (to the right of the dashed line (my dock is at the bottom) and it appears with an Address book icon.  After 10 to 15 seconds, the icon disappears.
Anyone know what is going on and how to fix this?

Not sure why this is happening, but try this. This is the way I've done it. First, make an alias of the folder (File>make alias) and put it somwhere, like Documents. Then, copy drag it (Option-click) to the part of the dock below or to the side of the separator near the Trash icon. This will place an alias of the folder in the Dock. You must keep the first alias you made.
You can also make one just for Utilities, the same way. The app folder will appear with an A and the Utilties folder will appear with an X.
EDIT: It's been a while now, but I think I got rid of the default app folder because I didn't like the way it looked and functioned.
You can also see I put an alias of my home folder there, as well.
Might as well mention another customisation. Get Tinkertool (free) Go to Dock>Disable Dock Expose to get rid of the very annoying -- at least to me -- entire screen turning black when opening one of the Dock icon's options.

  • Applications folder missing from Macintosh HD in Finder

The "Applications" folder disappeared from my "Macintosh HD" finder window a few days ago and I have found no way to restore it. I can access "Applications" from the Finder sidebar and it the "Applications" folder displays in the Path Bar but not in the "Macintosh HD" finder window. Time Machine displays the "Application" folder in the "Macintosh HD" finder window as it last appeared a few days ago but I can not restore it using Time Machine. I get a message that "Applications" is part of the system and cannot be changed. I find nothing in finder preferences to restore the folder. Any suggestions?

Take a look at this Apple Knowledge Base article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307033
The command should work for the Applications folder as well, you would just need to replace the "~/" path with "/Applications"--you may run into a permissions problem, so you would have to run the command as the super user. If that is the case, the command would look like this:
    sudo chflags nohidden /Applications
Hit return, you'll be asked for your password, type it carefully as it is not echoed to the screen in any way whatsoever, hit return again. You'll get a little lecture about sudo.

  • Applications folder in Finder

I somehow made the Applications folder disappear from the Finder sidebar.
There's still an Applications folder, of course. I can get at it through finder/Go/Applications.
I put an Applications folder for my desktop. It works. But if I make a new Applications folder for the Finder sidebar and move the desktop folder to trash, no apps will work because "[app] is in the trash."
When I try Shift/Apple/A to go the Application folder in Finder, it shows only a Utilities folder in my Applications window.
Any ideas on restoring the status quo ante, with the original Applications window in the Finder sidebar and no window on the desktop or in the trash?
    Thanks!
iMac (Power PC) iSight 20" 2.1G   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi James
It sounds like you might have moved all your applications into the folder that's on your desktop, for one thing. First, close all your open applications (except for Finder). If any of them are still in the trash, get them out, and move them all back to the correct location. While many applications will work fine wherever they are, it's a good idea to keep them in the main Applications folder at the top of the hard drive.
Once the apps are back where they should be (and the desktop folder is empty), trash the desktop folder. Then, open a new Finder window, and click on the Macintosh HD icon in the sidebar. You should see your Applications folder on the right, which you can now pull into the sidebar to create a shortcut.

  • I downloaded and installed Production Premuim CS5 on my computer and when I try to open it out of the applications folder it bounces at the bottom and then disappears.

I downloaded and installed Production Premuim CS5 on my computer and when I try to open it out of the applications folder it bounces at the bottom and then disappears. Does anyone know why this is? I've tried everything to open them but they will not open. Does anyone else have this problem?

I have a mac osx version 10.9.2. I used to have the student version of creative cloud cs6 earlier this year. I cancelled my subscription several months ago and bought cs5 two weeks ago. I never had any problems with the cloud. I went through the entire download process for CS5, and they all showed up in my applications folder and appeared to have downloaded but every time I try to open them they bounce around next to the application manager icon and then disappear.

  • OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 download disappears from application folder after completion, why?

    Hello!
When i download os x mavericks 10.9.4 from app store it disappears directly after completion which means that I can't make a usb install of the dmg file?
    Best Regards!

Normally, when the installer is downloaded, it opens automatically but then waits for some input from you. That's when you can quit the application and copy it. Since what you describe sounds like the actual installation completes very quickly, something else is happening because the installation can take quite a while, followed by a reboot.
However, it's been my experience that if there is a version of the installer saved somewhere else on your boot drive, that version will be replaced by what you've downloaded, and since it's not likely you saved it exposed in the Applications folder, the app looks like it disappeared when it's actually gone to another directory. What I do is search on the app name, "Install OS X Mavericks" (I use EasyFind, which is very fast), and when more than one shows up in the list, I look for today's date.

  • My firefox icon disappears into my applications folder each time I log out. Is it possible to keep the icon on the bottom of my screen? Thank you.

Hello, My Firefox icon disappears into my applications folder each time I log out. Is it possible to keep it at the bottom of my screen (it used to stay there)?

Does that mean you have to sign out of creative cloud on one machine and sign back in to creative cloud on the other machine to be able to use it?
No. You can be signed in to the Cloud (using the same Adobe ID) on two separate computers at the same time.
If you want to activate the Cloud on a 3rd machine then you need to sign out of one of the other computers.
Your issue on your home computer is unlikely to be related to signing in.
Mac or Windows at home? Which operating system?

The dashboard Icon has disappeared from my dock and is not in my applications folder. I know it's there somewhere. How can I restore or reinstall it?

Do you have Time Machine enabled.   If so, go back through your previous months until it features in your Application folder.   Then restore.

  • How do I add my Applications fold back onto the dock? People say I must drag it near the trash can, but that just puts it past that barrier. I am trying to get it back to where it disappeared from, on the left hand side near the finder icon.

With respect, you actually cannot store folders on the left side of the Dock - only on the right side. I wonder if you're talking about Launchpad, which looks like a silver rocket and shows you your installed applications? It's not actually a shortcut to the Applications folder, though. You can certainly drag Launchpad into the left side of the Dock from the Applications folder.

  • Contents of applications folder keep disappearing.

The contents of the applications folder in Finder keep disappearing.  I don't recall having the problem before and I can't pinpoint what might have prompted the issue. Restarting the computer does not always help, but shutting down and booting back up does. But it doesn't last. Applications appear as normal, then disappear again on moving away from Finder and going back in.  Anyone experiencing the same thing / or know how to solve? (MacBook Pro, Retina 13", OS X Yosemite)

I've seen this before (on this board and on my machine once) and the solution was to blow away the .DS_Store file for /Applications. So Launch /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app and type:
    +rm /Applications/.DS_Store+
    +killall Finder+
When the finder comes back up, see if the Applications folder loads for you now.
As for the Applications folder in your Sidebar, most likely you removed it by accident. Its pretty easy to do, but also pretty easy to fix. Double click on your hard drive on the Desktop. In the window that appears, drag the Applications folder to the Places section of the sidebar. That should do it. Hope that helps...

  • I restarted my mac and many apps and files disappeared. It's like it booted to a state several months ago. My CS 5 apps are not in the dock or applications folder. Has this ever happened before and what can I do?

It's like it booted to a state it was in several months ago. My CS 5 apps are not in the dock or applications folder. Has this ever happened before and what can I do?
The files on my desktop are not the ones that were there when I shut down. It's like it's gone back in time.
My display's power supply got fried (I think) in a power outage so I bought a new one. However, every time I restart the display usually stays black. I have found I need to keep rebooting until it kicks in and starts working. I unplug everything, wait a while (a few minutes to overnight) and try booting again.
This last time the display finally came on but I'm faced with this problem. I used to use time machine, but I deleted everything and disabled it a couple months ago or more so I'm at aloss as to why the mac is booting into the state it was in sevearl months ago.
What could I have done to cause this? Has this ever happened to anyone else and is there a solution?
Note: I did a search for a file I knew was created today. I found it and it showed that it was a file I had saved on the desktop this morning--even though that file's icon is not appearing on the desktop now.
I did a search for photoshop and saw my CS5 version listed.
However, I did a couple more searches and these files no longer appear in the search. I don't know if they're there or not. This is bizarre!
    I'm on a Mac Pro, 10.6.2.

Thanks for the obvious question. I mean it. The very same thought came to me this morning and, sure enough, I had booted into another drive--my old one that, of course, had the old desktop, etc.
It didn't dawn on me that this was the case since I hadn't set it as a boot drive but I guess in the course of all the restarts I did, it got switched.
    I'm back to normal again.
