Applications folder missing from Macintosh HD in Finder

The "Applications" folder disappeared from my "Macintosh HD" finder window a few days ago and I have found no way to restore it. I can access "Applications" from the Finder sidebar and it the "Applications" folder displays in the Path Bar but not in the "Macintosh HD" finder window. Time Machine displays the "Application" folder in the "Macintosh HD" finder window as it last appeared a few days ago but I can not restore it using Time Machine. I get a message that "Applications" is part of the system and cannot be changed. I find nothing in finder preferences to restore the folder. Any suggestions?

Take a look at this Apple Knowledge Base article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307033
The command should work for the Applications folder as well, you would just need to replace the "~/" path with "/Applications"--you may run into a permissions problem, so you would have to run the command as the super user. If that is the case, the command would look like this:
sudo chflags nohidden /Applications
Hit return, you'll be asked for your password, type it carefully as it is not echoed to the screen in any way whatsoever, hit return again. You'll get a little lecture about sudo.

  • Applications folder missing from Dock and Finder

I was a little confused to find my applications folder missing from the Dock on my Macbook Pro today - I can't think of anything which I may have done to actively cause it to go missing. I opened up the finder and dragged the applications icon from the LHS of the finder onto the RHS of the dock, but rather than reappearing in the doc it just disappeared.
When I went back to the finder to try again I discovered that it had vanished from there as well. I ran a search in the finder for "applications" and found the applications folder in the results, but when I try to open it I get the following error message "The alias “Applications” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found."
Does anyone have any ideas on what might have caused this or on how I get my Applications folder back on the Dock? Any help would be really appreciated!

The Applications folder on the dock is a shortcut, or more specifically, an alias.
It sounds like what you did was to drag the Applications item from the Finder sidebar...which is also an alias. By dragging it from the sidebar, it's as if you'd dragged an icon off the dock. It poofs and disappears.
To get them back, open a Finder window and navigate to Macintosh HD (or whatever you've named your hard drive). At the root level of the drive lives your Applications folder (the actual folder, not an alias). Drag that one to the sidebar to replace that shortcut, and drag it again to the Dock to replace that shortcut as well.
If you click on Macintosh HD and all you see are System, Library, and Users and have no Applications folder, then something terrible has happened.

  • Mobile Applications folder missing

    Hello everyone,
I am trying to acces files, which are supposed to be located inside the "Mobile Applications" folder, which should be located at
    C:\Users\<username>\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media.
However, this folder is missing. The only things that are present in the iTunes Media folder are:
A folder named Automatically Add to iTunes, both one in English and Dutch "(my PC language) and both are empty.
Another folder named Music, which is also empty.
    A file called .iTunes Preferences.plist
    No Mobile Applications folder whatsoever.
iTunes version I am using is the latest. (iTunes 12)
    OS is Windows 8.1
Device I am connecting with the PC is an iPod Touch 4th Gen. (running iOS 6.1.6)
    Some notes:
I have tried syncing the iPod with the computer, creating a backup at AppData, but that still did not make a folder called "Mobile Applications" appear.
I have downloaded all my apps through the iPod's App store, not through iTunes on the PC itself.
    I'll appreciate any help!

If this is a new computer that the device has never synced with see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
The process of recovering transferring purchases and recovering other media should create the folder in question. In some cases it may be one level up in the iTunes folder, but that is unlikely here. The only other possibility is that you're not looking in the active media folder.

  • "Users" folder missing on Macintosh HD

    Hello.
I've just updated my MacBook Pro to Mavericks 10.9.3 and iTunes to 11.2. Now my "users" folder is missing when I open my Macintosh HD. I need this folder for some Apps, so I created a temporary folder on my Macintosh HD to recieve some files and then I move them to the right folder. But I want "users" folder back again. I saw an old post about this issue, but it's too old and it's not working for me.
    Can someone help me?
    Thanks.

it's not only a bug (or someting the like) appearing in 10.9.3
in my case it began in 10.9.2, I tried to correct this updatong to 10.9.3, but no help
and neither correcting it with [sudo chflags nohidden /Users] nor starting a session as root lets the bug definitively be corrected.... with next restart /Users returns to invisibility
curiously the home folder is accesible thru command or the finder preferences of window's side bar
but the 'Guest' or 'Shared' folders are also not accesible if /Users is invisible (sauf with the trick of accesing home folder and then command arrow up)
I really think it's a bug, and will be corrected (but when?)

  • Applications folder missing

    Hello all,
Kind of freaking out here...I recently downloaded a trial version of Episode Pro to try out with FCP. I didn't work to my liking. I decided to uninstall it, because there was an uninstall option in the finder window with the trial application. Anyway, during the uninstall I was asked if I wanted to keep some things, and I said no...I figured these would have been items relating to the software. Well, when the installation was done, my applications folder was gone, and none of the shortcuts in my dock will work. I have a good feeling that the folder is gone, not just misplaced. Anyone think there is a chance in **** that I can get it back?

That's a pretty bad installer, if it uninstalled EVERYTHING. You can recover deleted files using a tool like TechTool Pro, but the delete files will be there only if nothing new has been written over the space they occupy. Since this is on your startup disk, it is likely that just running your Mac will start overwriting that space. You may just have to backup your personal data and reinstall everything. Alternately, you can use a program called Pacifist to install your Apple apps individually, but that may be a lot of work.

Actually, before you do anything drastic, maybe you should check the possibility that the Applications folder became invisible. You can use a program called TinkerTool to make invisible files visible.

  • Applications folder missing in Home folder

The Application folder is missing in my Home folder. It's still there on the dock. How do I get the folder back (or alias) back in my Home folder.
    Thanks,
    -Ed

Your main Applications folder resides at the top level of your boot volume. You can create a new folder called Applications in your home folder and install applications into this folder. These applications can only be used by you. Helpful if you have multiple users and don't want other users to access your applications.

  • OSX Lion User Application folder missing.

Trying to install an application soley for a user in OS X Lion. Although I don't have an "Applications" folder in my user folder. Did they take this option out of Lion or am I missing something here?

Well, I looked around and looked in my other user folders on several 10.6.8 boxes and the Applications folder is there in many users, but not for all, so this leads me to think that this is a supported folder, but an optional one.
Still looking in to it to see what the complete scoop is.
    Edit:
AHA!  Many times when we run an installer, the Apple approved installer allows you to install an application for just one user, or for all users on the system.  That's how this gets created.
The user specific Applications folder is a standard and supported folder, but an optiopnal one, even though Apple's docs neglect mentioning it.

  • Local computer missing from Devices group in Finder sidebar

On one of my Mavericks computers, the computer is missing from the Devices group in the Finder sidebar. Is there any way I can get it back?
Other attached devices, such as Remote Disc and a mounted disk image, do appear in the Devices group. The Computer Name as set in Sharing preferences is "BillCheesemanMBP", and that name should appear alongside a tiny icon of the computer in the Devices group. On both of my other Mavericks computers, the computer name and icon do appear in the Devices group along with other attached devices, as expected.
Apart from this, everything appears to be in order. For example, when I open the computer's window by choosing Go > Computer in the Finder, the window's title is "BillCheesemanMBP" and all of the mounted volumes appear in the window as expected, including the startup disk. And the computer appears correctly in the Shared group in the Finder sidebar of all other computers on the same network.
Additional details that might be relevant: This is a brand new MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch Late 2013. I restored it from the Time Machine backup for an older MacBook Pro that was also running Mavericks, and for no good reason I also reinstalled Mavericks on the new computer via the App Store. The old computer's Computer Name in Sharing preferences was the same as the new computer's, although the old computer now has "-2" added to the name because it was last logged onto the network while the new computer was already on the network. The old computer does appear in its Devices group with the name "BillCheesemanMBP (2), and it appears in the Shared group with the same name "BillCheesemanMBP (2) on all other computers on the network, as expected. When I take the old computer off the network, nothing changes. (To my surprise, the old computer even remains in the Shared group on all other computers on the network, even though I have confirmed in Network preferences on the old computer that it now has no network connection. Attempting to log on to the old computer from one of the other computers on the network results in "Connection Failed".)

Oh dear. There it is, right in the Sidebar pane of Finder Preferences. All I have to do is select the "BillCheesemanMBP" checkbox under Devices. Sorry for wasting the bandwidth.

  • List view in applications folder missing arrows

I have a 27" i7 iMac and I recently updated to 10.7.1. I have a clean install of Lion. After updating, a strange thing happened in my Applications folder. When in list view, the arrows that are usually next to the folders, allowing you to expand and collapse them, are gone. It is only one the top level of that folder. Everywhere else works fine. Also, I can't click on the headings to resort. Is anyone else experiencing this or have an idea on how to fix it?

Found this answer over in another question. Solved my issue.

    Check the following:
    1. Go to Application folder (or any other folder with similar behavior)
    2. Chose "View" --> "Arrange by" --> "None"

  • Distribution vs. Application Folder - repost from 3.x Group

We are new to TED. We have thirteen sites that we are going to replicate Apps to. Currently, we have manually (some ZENith) copied our apps to an existing container (Applications) under each location's context (which are partitions). So in other words each site has it's own set of apps and it's own application Folder object.
We have set up a new container at each site to facilitate our "target context" for the new, GOLD apps, and new Application Folder (same structure as the existing). WE have done some manual tests of having a USER object associated to an App that reside's in our specific site's Target area, in which the app is associated to the App folder object in this area. The result is that the User receives a combo of the two Application folders---User has a app associated in the Target area, and an app in the existing site's "applications" container.
The source context (partition) is in our Corp Office, and copies of the replica are only at that site. In the Source context, we also have an Application Folder. Our assumption is that we have to make that folder association in this context, to be able to replicate that same associate to the Target.
We need some direction or further explanation of Application Folder usage in the TED system.

you can have as many app folders as you like, TED will only add or modify
    but not delete existing associations

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 organizer program/folder missing from  installation

I downloaded the upgrade to Photoshop Elements 12 from the internet in November 2013 and the organizer part of the program is totally missing as well as the Photoshop Elements Organizer.exe file..  With previous versions (9 &10) Elements Organizer has its own folder containing files containing the Photoshop Elements Organizer.exe file. but this whole folder is not present with this version 12 upgrade.   I have downloaded the file and uninstalled and reinstalled several times to no avail.  Can you advise how I obtain this part of the program.

I have downloaded the Adobe Support Advisor ( apparently been withdrawn according to the Adobe website) and it located no errors.
Again I say that the Elements Organizer program is missing as there is no Elements Organizer 12 sub-folder within the Adobe folder located in C drive where the program is installed (Photoshop
Elements 10 has an Elements Organizer 10 sub-folder and the organizer works fine).
Also on clicking the Photoshop desktop icon (loaded by the program installation) message says "cannot find Photoshop Elements 12.exe.  However the program can be loaded from the PhotoshopElementsEditor 12.exe file, but the organizer button at the bottom right of the editor screen when clicked gives message " loading elements organizer workspace" and after a minute or so this message disappears and nothing happens.
The download is an upgrade version so I don't whether this makes any difference.

  • Thumbnails missing from DNG files in Finder

I have been converting Canon CR2 files to DNG files for archiving using Adobe DNG Converter 8.1. Conversion completed without issue and the files located in the appropriate folder on an external hard drive. Checking the folder I found the DNG files showing with no thumbnails and showing Dimensions 0x0 in Finder window. The last time I used DNG Converter was some 18 months ago and the conversions on CR2 files from the same camera converted to DNG files with thumbnails and Dimensions showing. The source CR2 files show correctly in Finder.
There have been updates to OS X 10.8, also to Adobe Camera RAW and Adobe DNG Converter since I last did such archiving. I have searched on Adobe website but have found no reference to this issue and googling has not helped. Has anyone had a similar experience and possibly found the answer?

Same here. Latest updates to Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom, OSX 10.9. I could view .DNGs no problem before Mavericks. I can preview Canon Raw files no problem in the finder or with quick look. Not with Mavericks. And the file sizes are listed as 0x0, which is really reassuring.
My guess is botched Apple Mavericks programming. Or yet another Apple/Adobe spat where the software team managers' haven't had their diapers changed in a bit and are squabbling over whose toys are whose.
And, the end users get jacked. Again.
