Applications Folder won't stay in Icon View

In the Applications Folder I want to have my icons arranged in a certain way at a certain size and always open in that view, but they never stay that way after I switch my mac back on.
I have tried everything:
1. Ticking "Always open in icon view". The tick is always gone next time I switch my mac back on. In all other sidebar folders this tick remains so I always get the view I want, along with icon order and icon view which is OK for other folders - but not Application Folder. It always opens in List View so when I change it to icon view, my icon sizes and order are back to default.
2. Arrange by "Snap to grid" - still opens in List View.
3. Tried "Set as default" in icon view - still opens in List View.
4. Deleted DS Store in Application Folder, as advised elsewhere, and setting it up again with "Always open in icon view". Still opens up again in List View.
5. Deleted "com.apple.finder.plist", as advised elsewhere, and set everything up again, but still opens in List View next time I start up my mac.
Why does the tick in "Always open in icon view" keep disappearing for my Applications Folder next time I start up?
How can I have this folder always open in icon view?
Something is not right somewhere but I don't know how to make it right.

Yes, I have done everything as you've outlined. It has worked as it should for all other Finder/Sidebar folders - Documents, Downloads etc, whether permanently list view, icon view etc.
I also set up the Applications Folder the way I want it, tick the "Always open in icon view" box, then the next time I switch on the tick is gone and it's opened in list view. All other Sidebar folders are fine, and still have the box ticked.
It's just the Applications Folder - something seems to be wrong somewhere and it's not anything I've done, or not done as it works with the other folders.

  • Collection folder won't stay closed

I have a Collection set (with nested sub-collections) which won't stay closed. I click the twistie to collapse it, and one second later, it opens again.
Has anyone else seen this behavior, or have any insight into its cause?

Usually caused by a sub-collection (or sub-folder) being 'selected' ... 'select' a different collection/folder, and then it should work

  • Applications folder won't let me in - must authenticate!

Strange change. I can't create a new folder in the Applications folder. The menu item is grayed out. If I try to create a folder elsewhere and drag it over then I get a message that the Ap folder cannot be modified and I must authenticate.
I checked "info" and it indicates that I have read and write privileges, so it is not something to do with that. Any suggestions?

Hrm. In my case, it's just that multiple Get Info boxes didn't help. The permissions were set to Read Only and locked by the System, a novel occurence for me. I couldn't change 'em even though I'm the only user/admin of the computer...

  • Reminders won't stay in date view

Ever since upgrading to 10.8.2, Reminders refuses to stay in date view.  I can select reminders for a particular day on the calendar, as I could previously, but then it very quickly and spontaneously reverts to list view (which is in itself useless, as you can't sort by date there), even if I'm in the middle of modifying a reminder.  I suspect iCloud syncing triggers list view.
    Any thoughts?

My wife and I have the same problem. Our temporary solution is to Turn Wi-Fi Off (assuming you're on a computer that only connects to the internet over Wi-Fi) while making any significant changes to the Reminders.
It appears as though we're constantly being interupted (date window and name field closing) because it's trying to sync in the middle of typing and my wife types fast and she can't beat it.
This is definantly an Apple problem that needs to be resolved.

  • After OS reinstall, folder in dock opens in icon view.

I have to click Open in Finder to see it as a list. It used to open as a list with one click. How can I fix settings to get list view in one click again?

Right click on the item in the dock to bring up the contextual menu of options and select list.
Or are you talking about the folder itelf?  In which case, in the Finder, select the menu View and choose "as List".

  • Applications folder won't work

When ever I click on it on the dock it just "resets" my dock (disappear and reappear) and when I try to drag it off my dock it does the same thing. What is going on?
I also can't right click on anything on the right hand side of the separator.

I had the same problem. I'm running 10.5 but on a Motorola chip. The Firefox download page is not clear on OS and machine requirements. To fix the problem, trash the newly installed Firefox 4. Download Firefox 3.6.16 and reinstall. All of your preferences and bookmarks will still be there as they are contained in a different place. Hope this helps.

  • The view options won't stay?

I've used Mac OS for a very long time now and am at the least an intermediate user both in hardware and software but this is perplexing. For whatever reason, whenever a Finder window is opened (disk image just mounted, clicked the Finder icon, opened my documents) it always opens in Column View, even if I already set the folder to icon view. It doesn't seem to be saving the .DS_store file correctly or something, because if I close the window and open it again, it resets to column view. Every once in a while it will stay in icon view but it's rare.

Since I got in trouble jumping in before I really knew what I was doing, tell me the difference between "Root User" and the one that locks the files so you
can't access them from Disk Utility.
I'm putting this in my "ToDo" file for a future time when I'm tuning/cleaning my

  • Icon size in Application folder

WHen viewing the application folder from the Dock, the icons have now been enlarged and I have to scroll through the application folder to find apps, how can I reduce the icon size within the Application folder? when viewed from the Dock?
    Thanks
    John

Actually, you don't even have go to the View menu for the slider. It should be at the lower right of your Finder window in Icon View. AFA the alias in your Dock, poof it and create a new one by dragging your
apps folder to the Dock. Don't do it from the Sidebar, do it from Computer/Macintosh HD/Applications.
    Let us know.

  • In the Application folder the Kind view,  can it be be rearranged?

in the Application folder, selecting Kind view,  can it be be rearranged?

Not if you open the Applications folder by clicking on the icon in the Taskbar..  But you can also open the Applications folder in Finder, where the type of viewing Can be changed, somewhat.

  • Mail won't stay in dock

Every since installing Leopard and updating, Mail icon keeps leaving the Dock. I've created new User, done archive and reinstall, varified/repaired permissions, clicked on "leave in dock", etc. and yet every time I close Mail after using it, the Icon just disappears from Dock--thoughts? Thanks!! LT

What happens if you open your Applications folder and drag the Mail icon from there onto the Dock?
If that doesn't help, then the next thing I suggest is to locate the Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist from your Home folder, drag it onto the desktop, and then log out/log in (or enter killall Dock in Terminal). Then customize your Dock to desired. You can throw away the copy on the desktop if you find that the Dock works better this way.

  • My application folder got deleted need to replace

I DELETED MY APPLICATION FOLDER   HOW CAN I GET IT BACK

If you have truly deleted your Applications folder, rather than just the icon from the dock, you will need to reinstall your applications — each and every one of them. However, if you're posting from your computer, I'd say you haven't really deleted the Applications folder, or you wouldn't have been able to access this forum. If you're posting from a different source, of course, all bets are off.
If you do need to re-create your Applications folder, do you have a backup? If so, just restore to your hard drive from that.
To reinstall your applications without a backup, if that is necessary, it would be easiest to start by reinstalling your OS; that will give you the built-in applications. Be sure to apply all updates, too. After that, you will need to reinstall all third-party apps, either by means of CDs or DVDs that they may be stored on, or by means of downloads from the internet.

  • Why do the folders  on my external sparse drive only open in icon view?

Even though I select list view, the next time I open a folder it is always in icon view. The "view option"  in the View pulldown menu only shows a box for Always open in icon view and the "Use as Defaults" box is greyed out.  This problem does not exist on my iMac internal drive, only on the external drive on which I have created a sparse image for security purposes.

I followed exactly what you advised, and it all worked. I did convert the files first that were .AVI ---> .MP4 (the audio and video came out beautifully when viewed). I organized my files around a bit, and then I went into Itunes---> Preferences---> Advanced---> Changed where I want to grab my movies from. It keep all my previous music, tv, movies, podcasts files that I had in ITunes, and just "added" the new content without disrupting anything in my Itunes at all. I LOVED IT...so simple in the end.
The files did take a while to convert, but I only had to do the ones that I had that were labeled ".AVI". The program, HAND BRAKE, allowed me to set up a "batch" and I had them converting during the afternoon and into the evening.
    All in all....THANK YOU/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic__ _/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/ migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-a vail.png/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstat ic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic___/migration-ima ges/migration-img-not-avail.png
Since whenever I open my Itunes, all the movies display well, and so my APPLE TV can now view all my "content" in Itunes. I thought I was going to have to return that APPLE TV since I couldn't figure a way around it, and all in all, it wasn't all that bad of a process to convert and then change file location in preferences.

    Hi Janice,
What version of Mac OS are you using?
Adobe does not recommend migrating the software from one disk to the other.
Please run the setup file for Acrobat and reinstall the software. You might want to delete the existing version of Acrobat installed before reinstalling it.

  • Icon in Application Folder Grid View is not displaying correctly

    Hi there,
It seems that whenever I download and install a new program into my Applications folder, the icon appears incorrectly in Grid View. For example, I just downloaded a program called Dragster, installed it and dragged it into my Applications folder. However now, when I click on 'Applications' on the dock, the icon for Dragster is white with a circle and line through it (similar to a non-smoking type of sign).
If I drag the icon to the Desktop and then back into Applications again, the icon appears as normal - the correct icon for that folder. Why does this happen? Why does the icon display incorrectly when I drag the program directly to my Applications folder... this is what I am supposed to do isn't it (am a reasonably new mac user)?
    Thanks in advance.
    Nicola

hey, i've been experiencing the same problem... i really hope that there is a better answer than "get used to it" b/c, like you said, if i drag the icon to the desktop, and then back to the applications folder, the icon appears normal without the "no smoking sign" circle and slash. also, the icons are normal in the finder window, but have the circle and slash when i click on the applications folder/stack in my dock and it opens in grid mode (when set to "automatic). just wondering if you've had any luck finding out how to fix this problem...

  • Application folder defaults back to icon view after restart

When I view the application folder after a restart or start up the view is the icon view. In the finder I change it to list view, and restart the system and the view will revert back to the icon view every time. I have tried repairing file permissions then changing views, and I have deleted the .DS_store file in the applications folder and changed the view. Meanwhile after a system restart the app. folder view always reverts to the icon view. This seems to be the only folder that acts this way. I would like the default view of the app folder to always be the list view. How can I accomplish this? Thanks for your help.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

This happens because you do not have permission to modify the invisible file that stores the folder settings, and when you delete it, a new one is created that inherits the folder permissions.
Open Terminal and paste this command:
    sudo chmod 666 /Applications/.DS_Store;sudo chown $USER /Applications/.DS_Store
With that done, now set the window view and it should be persistent.
