Applications Icon in Dock looks like Address Book

Hi -
I'm suspicious about why my Applcations icon in the dock doesnt look like the Applications icon in the Finder window. Instead it looks like the Address Book with something hiding behind it. Really!
Is this correct?
If not, how do I remedy this?
Thanks,
J2

I believe you have the folder set to "Display as Stack". In this display mode the dock icon tries to show you the icon representing the topmost object in the folder, which is usually Address Book in the case of the Applications folder. You can have the dock display the Applications folder as just a folder by clicking and holding the button down on the Applications dock icon (or control clicking on it) and selecting that option in the list of options that appears.

  • Search should look at address book notes & application data

Search is basically useless to me, I used to have the ability to categorize my address book, or at the very least make a note in a contact that was searchable. (For example, "work" in the note section of a contact would result in search results of just the contacts with this note, go figure!) I also have lots of stuff in alternate notes programs that is not searchable. Not much of a reach to make data entered into an "i-device" searchable, I think a few software engineers should be able to tackle this insurmountable problem! I paid $500 for a device that has fewer options than my Palm Pilot did 8 years ago!(and in regards to searches, is absolutely inferior)Sounds like the only way to get apple to address an issue is to make lots of noise in this support forum. Sorry to waste anyone's time.

I just had this same problem. I use multiple mac computers that I sync manually because of a previous idisk issue. I noticed as I updated my cloud, the search function in address book quit working properly on each computer.
So created a new group list and I attempted to copy "All Contacts" into that group. It would not copy all my contacts into that group in one paste function. So I took all the the first 25 names and copied them. That worked. Then I moved to the next 26-50 names and so on. I noticed when I got to the fourth group of copying contacts that it did not paste and froze the application.
I quit address book, reopened it. All the contacts before the the fourth group were in the file. The search function worked on those names. I then went card by card and found one that had a "string" of data listed where an email address should I have been. So I deleted the corrupt card and now my address book search is working again.
Here is the short solve. Look for a corrupt card in your address book. I found the corrupt card by trying to copy it over to a new address group. The card that was corrupt just happened to be one that I had updated in the last week or so...
    Hope this helps.

  • Any way/application to click on application icon in dock and minimize/hide?

Hi folks. I'd like to know if there is some way to setup being able to click on an application icon in the dock and have it minimize/hide by doing so. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

i just posted pretty much the same thread, and then this thread showed up in the "more like this" column on the right.
option-clicking an icon in the dock to hide has been standard up until mavericks, i've been looking around the web for days and have yet to see an absolute answer for a fix or replacement.
command+H is essentially the same thing, but conflicts with some key apps that may (will) disrupt your production flow.

  • ICal date in application icon in dock is broken

The iCal date that gets updated in the iCal application icon that sits in the dock is not working properly for me. The date is never aligned correctly. The black number is always positioned too high vertically and overlaps the red month area. I've checked iCal on other friend's machines (same OS, Leopard) and theirs display perfectly. Any idea why mine is out of whack? Please see screenshot below.
The same thing is happening to the calendar widget on my dashboard too, so it appears as though it's some system wide bug/issue.

    evolution75,
How on earth did you figure that out?!
I am a regular visitor to this Forum, and the problem you described is not rare.
How do I now go about removing duplicates?
    Just two simple steps:
    1. In Font Book, select the version of the font family that you want to use.
    2. Choose Edit > Resolve Duplicates.

  • Trying to add Applications icon to Dock

I reinstalled my Mac OS, Maverick. How do I add the Applications folder to the Dock? When I try, it looks as if all my apps are being copied to the newly created Dock icon for Applications, because of the blue progress bar under the icon. And it seems to be stuck as it has not moved in quite awhile.

    Hello there, Chris.
The following Knowledge Base article explains how to add a folder to the Dock:
    Mac Basics: The Dock
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2474
    Adding and removing Dock items
If you want to add an application to the Dock, click the Launchpad icon in the Dock and drag the application icon to the Dock; the icons in the Dock will move aside to make room for the new one. If you want to add a file or folder to the Dock, just drag its icon from any Finder window (or the desktop) and drop it on the Dock. The resulting icon that appears in the Dock is actually an alias of the original item (it's kind of a pointer to your original item). If you drag an application or file onto the Dock, you'll be able to open it anytime by simply clicking its docked icon. If you drag a folder onto the Dock, a Finder window of the folder's contents will display when you click the folder icon in the Dock.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • What do the blue versus gray icons mean for groups in address book

When I subscribe to another address book, it sits below a line under all my contact groups.
My group icons are grey, the subscribed contact group icons are blue.
If I drag a subscribed group to my "All" group then it sits there like a normal group, and sync to my iphone/touch etc. but the icon remains blue.
I got excited thinking that it would automatically update any changes found in the subscribed address book but that doesn't seem to be the case.
So what does the blue icon mean? is there something special I can do with it? I can't find any apple documentation anywhere.
    Thanks
    Edward

The blue dots mean the addressee has a device capable of using iMessage.
Try using the phone number instead of the email address to send the message.

  • How do you make it look like a book?

    Hi,
I noticed that many best selling books they have along the edges, like a hard book cover.
Then in the middle of the page is a page crease.
These two elements make it look much more like a book.
How do I create these elements for my book?
How do they use the headers and footers?
    Many thanks,
    Elaine

Those books were not made using iBooks Author.
iBA books (hybrid epub) will not provide that style/look.
You'll need to create a standard epub if you want that type of navigation/presenation to the suer. Apple's Pages (also Indesign, etc.) will output the epub format that will provide the exact look in your example/screenshot.
See iBA Tips and Tricks 01 - on 'page turn animation'.
See your other thread, same topic:

  • Recent iMac Convert - Questions about Trash and Applications Icon on Dock

Any advice would be appreciated. 2 issues:
    1. I transfered my windows files to my iMac today and having been cleaning up the various folders. I have deleted quite a few files and have opened and emptied the trash icon many times. From about 1 hour ago, the trash icon will no longer open when I single left click it, double left click it or right click it and select "Open". I can right click and select "Empty", but now I can not review what I am about to delete just in case I have accidently moved a file to the trash that I should not have.
    2. On the right side of my dock I only have icons for Documents and the Trash. I thought I was supposed to also have an icon for Applications. How can I put Applications in its proper spot on the dock. I tried dragging the applications icon from Finder to the space on the dock between the documents icon and the trash icon, but it will not allow me to do so.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for the help.

Same way. Navigate to /Home/ folder then drag the Documents folder to the right side of the Dock.
Visit the site reference I gave you. You may find a solution in the FAQ I mentioned.
You may also try the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Application icon on dock

I just got new MBP with 10.5.5. My work MacPro has that Application icon expand to fan or a box.. it is missing on my MBP.
    How do I activate it?

Drag the Applications folder from the top level of the hard disk to the right side of the Dock; you may want to control-click it and change the settings.

  • Some application icons on dock not bouncing

Some of my icons on my dock bounce only once when starting programs, others bounce three times...is this normal behavior? If not, how do I fix it???

Some applications take longer to start up than others, and an application on the Dock will bounce while it is starting up or if it needs attention.

  • Icon hidden behind Application icon on dock - OS X Maverick

I have this icon behind the Application icon on the dock and I cannot figure out what it is. It is not something on the desktop as I have moved the dock and can't see it, so it is definitely connected with the Application icon. I have deleted all downloads which could have been half done and I have removed an Alias I had in the Application folder. Now all the Applications appears as "Applications" in the "Kind" column when viewing in Finder.
    Any ideas?

Do you mean the Applications icon on the right side of the dock?
It is the icons for your applications and they are stacked on top of each other.
The top icon will be the first app in your Applications folder and under that will be the next app in the Applications folder etc.
Depending on the size of the icons, you may see 3 or 4 icons on top of each other.
    Here is mine.
The first few apps are 1Password, 1Password4, Adobe Reader and this shows those icons.

  • Files won't open from finder or by dragging to application icon in dock

Clicking or double clicking on a file in finder causes it to blink as if it is opening but it does not open. Dragging the file to its application in the dock causes the application to open but the file does not open. I can only open a file from inside an application using File > Open.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
First of all, are running you have any third party apps that change your system appearance?
If so, try removing them from login items (see below).
Then, create a new account, name it "test" and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
If the problem is present in the test account also, then it is systemwide. In this case try repairing this with the 10.5.2 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
(Note: If you are running build 9C7010 do not install the Update.)
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
If the problem does not appear in the test account try starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take a bit more time to startup because it runs a directory check first).
If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If there are still problems, go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving /Users/Home)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
    Let us know.

  • Looking for Address Book Cleaning Programm?

    Hallo
I have export (txt tab format) a large Database (2400 records) from our PABX-System (Habimat). The Field are very dynamic. Now I want to clean this file an make for every records correct fields to that I am later able to import them in the Address Book.
Is their such a Program to generate "own" fields for each record, e.g. Spouse-Name, Spouse-GSM, Spouse-Birthday, Secretary, Child etc. I sorted out that the iphone is able to handle all these different field names, but it very frustrating to edit 2400 record within the Address Book or on the iPhone.
I tried to edit them in Excel but I need to prepare field that will be import in the Adress Book.
Is their a tool availible on Mac (or Windows) that helps me to edit all this records to the correct fields?
    Regards
    Gérard

I'm in the same boat, Tor...
...The Apple Address Book is the most awkward of all the contact management programs I've used. I too have trouble with duplicates. One source is when I merged two data bases. One had middle initials and the other didn't. I've been pecking away at deleting them one by one and with over 5,000 contacts it'll take me all year. Please keep me informed if you get a descent response to your posting. Good luck and know you aren't alone if that's any consolation.

It looks like the new Adobe Color is for iPad / iPhone only.  Why isn't it available for desktop use like Kuler?
Kuler server seems to have been turned off.  Why?  Kuler and colour themes were very useful.
