Applications in my Utilities folder have suddenly disappeared

I went use Disk Utility and discovered that all of the applications in my Utilities folder have disappeared. How can I fix this without creating a major problem? I make a backup clone of my master boot volume every day and unfortunately this happened without me catching it before the subsequent backup. I do have an earlier time machine backup of the clone with all of the Utilities applications in place.

Try restoring them from the Time Machine backup. Then check for updates.

I've tried importing and restoring from bookmarks.html. The closest I get is having the XBOX folder in the dropdown, then the list of saved XBOX b-marks with nothing in them to actually go to.
I looked at the places.sqlite file the other day and it said 0kb, now it has @11,000. Must be from recent activity.
Anyway someone can control my pc and try to resolve this? If not, I guess these bookmarks weren't that important so oh well.
I'm just afraid to try to organize the rest....

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Adobe Air Application Installer on Utilities Folder

I just got my first mac early this year so I still haven't gotten the hang of the Mac OS. Anyway, I installed Adobe Photoshop CS4 a few days back but I uninstalled it a few days after. I noticed when I opened my utilities folder I saw the following:
Adobe Air Applications Installer
Adobe Air Uninstaller
Adobe Installer Folder
Adobe Utilites Folder
I can't remember if the files were there even before I installed the Adobe Photoshop CS4 program. Is it safe for me to remove these files? If it is, how do I remove them? Thanks!

Just move them to desktop, restart and see if you get any alerts.
Also check in System Preferences for Version Cue and if you have it, turn it off.

Installing utility programs: Applications vs. Utilities folder

When installing various third party utility programs, like Cocktail, TT Pro, Safari Enhancer, MacJanitor etc., do you think it matters whether or not you install them in the main Applications folder or its Utilities sub-folder? I notice that many programs advise installing into Applications folder, presumably the Utilities folder in Apps folder would be considered the same as installing into Applications folder. I have ocassionally read that some people advise leaving the Utilities folder alone and leave it for those utilities installed only by Apple.

Most applications will not care whether they are located in Applications/Utilities or in Applications. However, it is not a good idea to move Apple's applications because the software update mechanism may not find them for updating in the future. A few commercial applications also should be left where they are installed because the updaters will only find the original if it is in Applications. I keep Cocktail in Utilities without any problems; my guess is that the others you mention would work fine from that location as well. If you run into a problem you can always just move them back.

Half of the messages in my Sent folder (the most recent ones, covering the past 2 1/2 years) have suddenly disappeared.

The earlier ones are still there.

Try repairing the folder. Right-click it, choose Properties > General Information > Repair Folder. If that does not work, go into the profile, open Mail folder, and delete Sent.msf (not Sent with no extension).
How often do you compact folders? You should do that frequently.

Contents of G5 iMac hard drive have suddenly disappeared

Note: I'm posting this as a favor to a colleague who has just now experienced this problem. I'll perforce be directing her to come over here and read any responses (and respond herself with addition information). She's having a problem that I'm dead stumped on.
Just now I received this cry for help (the platform is a G5 iMac, the system Mac OS X 10.3.9 (this is all I know about my colleague's system right now):
I have a lots of folders on my desktop for stuff I'm working on right now, and I also have a dock with some of the applications I regularly use. But the contents of my hard drive have disappeared!!!
Actually, I know they are there because a similar thing happened to me about a week ago. I clicked on my Workfiles folder on the desktop to open it. Suddenly, so fast I could barely see it, something flew off to the left of my monitor and disappeared. Thereafter, I could not open the Workfiles folder. I knew it still existed because when I tried to copy a Word file from my desktop into it, I got the message that
it would be replacing a file with the same name. So the contents hadn't really disappeared. They were just inaccessible. I finally figured out how to deal with that by creating a new folder on my desktop and moving the Workfiles folder into it. After I did that, I could access the contents of the Workfiles folder.
But I can't do the same thing with my hard drive (called "Macintosh HD, for lack of anything fancy); it won't copy or move into a folder -- DMB! I just realized that I can't open ANY folder on my desktop, which is where all my working projects are stored (or those folders are aliases for folders on my hard drive which I can't access). In fact, all the folders on the desktop show that they are "open" but no
contents are visible.
This means I can't get to anything right now, including those applications that don't happen to be on my desktop.

Click on the Safari icon in the Dock and paste the following into Safari's address bar:
applescript://com.apple.scripteditor?action=new&script=tell application "Finder" to set bounds of window 1 to {357, 296, 667, 511}
In the Finder, open one of the folders, and then make the Script Editor frontmost followed by pushing the Run button. That folder's contents should now be visible, and the command can be repeated for the other folders.
This method works in Mac OS X 10.3 and newer. If you are using an older version of Mac OS X, other solutions may be available.

Many songs plus all playlists have suddenly disappeared

all of a sudden this evening a huge part of my iTunes songs (60%) have disappeared from the Music folder PLUS all of my playlists have disappeared, iTunes seemed to want to re boot its diagnositcs as if a new iTunes was booting its way onto the desktop but I stopped that as it was clear that so mcuh data was lost it was like iTunes had latched onto a much earlier dbase from years back. Never happened before. I have to say some funny things have been going on since I upgraded to Lion!!

Double click on the picture of the HD on your desktop, then look at the bottom of the window that opens.
First check the S.M.A.R.T. status on your HD: Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > in the panel at left, select the first item in the list/your HD mechanism > look atthe bottom of the main window next to S.M.A.R.T. status and see if it says “Verified” or something more ominous like “Failing.”
If S.M.A.R.T.status is "Verified," run Repair Disk: Boot from install disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screen select the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar > open Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on the left side > click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, and restart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions.

Address Book Cards and Mail Contacts have suddenly disappeared!

Help! The power went off for a minute here at the office, shutting everything down. When I restarted, the contents of my address book and all the contacts I had in mail have disappeared. Anybody got any ideas on what I can do? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You may have transferred all your songs, but your iPad is seeing the library as a different entity.

About a month ago I bought a new Macair and it has been working very well. It is synced with my ipad and my iphone. Now all of a sudden, my email messages in my inbox have dissapeared if they are older then 6/7 days. Can anyone help me get them back, does anyone know where they have gone? I haven'tchangedany settings and can't find anything in Preferences that says to delete or remove them after so many days.
