Applications jumping in Spaces

Sorry if there has been a thread on this recently - I haven't located one.
I'm getting frustrating space-hopping with some office applications. I open Word in space 2, go down to space 4, then when I go back up my open document isn't there, it's in space 1. Sometimes I open a document in one space, and when I click on it to place the cursor, it leaps to another space. This happens regardless of where I open the application. I've found the same with powerpoint. I only seem to have this with MS applications (sigh). I don't want to assign the application to a fixed space, as I need more flexibility with word-processing against the other applications which I have chosen to anchor in different spaces.

Thanks for the responses all. I may try Tom in London's recommendation, but it strikes me if one app can do it using the same OS, then Spaces could be updated to deal with it too (even though, unsurprisingly, it seems to be MS's fault in this case). I've been having this issue with or without the toolbox open, and haven't yet been able to work out the reason for these jumps, or any logic as to why it jumps from one space to another. The most frustrating is when you click on 'save' on the toolbar for a document and, without saving, the space shifts to an empty space. You go back, and try to save the document, and it just hops to another space. So you close the document from the menu instead. Highly annoying. Reminds me of using a PC.

  • PCUI: Application "jumping" to top

    Hi altogether,
I have a problem with a selfmade PCUI application: On the screen, detail views 1 and 2 are displayed, each one with several tabs. Therefore, the screen is too small to display the whole application. To see the detail view 2, one has to scroll down.
The problem: If I want to switch the tabs on detail view 2, the application jumps up to the top of the page, and the user has to scroll down again to see detail view 2.
Which mechanisms are responsible for this jumping? Error messages (via GET_MESSAGES) aren't displayed.
    Thanks for your help,
    Sven

    Hi Gregor,
I am sorry, but this seems not to be correct. If I try to use a standard PCUI application (like Business Partner view, application COMM_BUPAR), I can select the tabs on ODC2 in a scrolled-down window without the window jumping to the top.
I don't know where the differences are between this standard application and my application, but the "jumping" behaviour seems not to be "standard".
    Greetings, Sven

  • Remove assignment of application to a space

Under SL I assigned certain applications to specific space. How do change / undo these settings in Lion. System Preferences does not have anything to manage applications to spaces.

Thanks for the info. The only reason I needed to do this is Time Machine has a problem dealing with the finder assigned to one space if you don't launch time machine in the space where the finder is. Any idea how to solve this problem any other way?

  • Application name allows spaces == compiler errors.

    Hi,
Love the idea of the LaunchPad. Great way to see working code examples for all the top mobile APIs. I noticed when I created my application the Application name allowed spaces in the name. Once I imported the app into Flash Builder 4 Burrito, it threw a number of errors due to a space in the class name(s). It took a while to find all of the places where the spaces needed to be removed.
I think it would great to have LaunchPad allow spaces in the name, but then know when to replace the spaces with underscores _ for the package and class names. This way we can keep the application name with spaces for things like the app name listed on the device, but then ensure that there are no spaces where it will throw compilation errors.
    Thanks,
    iBrent

Thanks for the feedback Brent! I see what you're reporting, thanks for letting me know. I recently changed the way that works to use the app name for all the file names, previously it was created with the name Main.mxml so that was not an issue. I'll consider replacing the spaces with underscores as you suggested. Thanks much! Holly

  • After wake from screensaver jump app/space?

Hopefully someone can suggest a fix for this annoying OSX behaviour!
Everytime I wake from my screensaver, Spaces jumps back to space one and brings an application that was hidden to the foreground.
So, for example. I am using Safari on Space 3. Computer goes to screensaver. I wake it. Immedietly it whips across to Space 1 and brings the previously hidden Skype to the foreground.
    What's making this happen?
Interestingly it always seems to be Skype it brings the the front. If Skype is quit though the same behavious occurs but bringing a different program to the front.
    Any ideas please?

H, I'm having a similar issue with Mission Control on OSX 10.8 and have had a post on the forums for over a month now (see link below) but no one's answered me and I can't find a solution anywhere. Have you had any luck since posting? For me, the OS likes to jump from whatever full-screen app or desktop space I was using when I put my mac to sleep to desktop space 1 and Twitter! Similarly, if I close Twitter, some other random App takes its place. Wierd.

  • Applications move between spaces when connecting/disconnecting second display

During the day I'm constantly connecting/disconnecting/reconnecting my 2nd display to my Mac. When I do that a lot I see a few things happen:
    - Applications move to different spaces
    - One or two of my spaces dissappear
Has anyone come across this issue before and is there any solutions or options I can try out.
    Many thanks!

I just ran a hardware test (on ML you must hold down Option-D so it can access the hardware test bits via the 'net) and the test completed without finding any issues. I wonder if the issue has to do with switching between the integrated and discreet graphics.

  • Spaces: Possible to hide applications from other spaces?

    Hi
I'm wondering if it's possible when you press alt+tab and see the "application switcher", to show only the applications that are located in your current Space? f.x. if I have 5 applications open, but 2 of them are in the Spaces window number 1, then the application switcher will only give me a list of those two applications.
This is possible on Ubuntu, and is an extremely nice function.
    regards
    frímann

no, this is not possible in OS X. some 3rd party virtual desktop programs might be able to do it, I'm not sure.
you can ask Apple to implement this feature here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
P.S. you can use exposé to show all active windows in all applications in the current space. not quite the same thing what you are asking but reasonably close.

  • Bring Open Application to Current Space

Is there a way to bring an application to the current Space?
Situation: I'm actively working in Space A and I need to access information from an application that is in another space, Space X. I can easily enough click on the icon in the doc to switch me to that space and application. However, I would like to option to bring that application to the current window.
Has anybody out there come across a way to do this?

There are several ways to move a window into another space. Here are two:
In the all-spaces view (F8 by default), you can arrange windows into whatever space you want.
Or... go to the window you want to move. Grab the title bar to move it and shift spaces (Control-Arrow, for example) while holding the window. The window will move along with you as you cycle through spaces.

  • Application name for Spaces

Can somebody tell me where the "Spaces" feature retrieves the name of an application from? That is, does it just take the name of the application bundle, or the executable inside the bundle, or something else? And does it store this in a cache somewhere that I can clear out?
I ask because I am a programmer and have several copies of the application that I am working on using different names. When I add the program in Spaces (System Preferences->Spaces, click "+" and select my program) it uses one name that I assigned to one previous version of my program regardless of which version I am using now.
However, I have no idea if it retrieved this name from the name of the bundle or somewhere else. I want to verify that the end user will see an attractive and simple name and not the hacked name that I use to build a specific version of my program. And I want to make sure that I assign this name correctly to the application I release.
Can somebody help me with the questions I posed above? Thanks.
    Scott
PS I asked this first in a more general users discussion forum but it was recommended that this would be a better location.

I have compiled several development versions of my application for testing and debugging and have given them different names. However, Spaces seems to have taken one of those names and stuck with it, and now when I compile a new version and give it a simple name that I would like the end user to see, Spaces still identifies the app as one of the names of a previous development version.
I assume this name is cached somewhere, so I would like to empty out that cache and verify that the name I have given to the app is the one that Spaces will use. Also, knowing the specific plist item that is used by Spaces would help as well.

  • Unable to move applications/documents between spaces--why?

I've noticed this the last couple of times I've used spaces on my _*Macbook Pro:_*
I'll have 4 spaces, each with a different application or document. When I try and move a document or application to a different space, I simply can't. It's as if the applications are frozen in those spaces.
In other words, I can't move applications between spaces. They seem frozen in their spaces.
In both instances, my Macbook Pro is plugged into a Powerpoint projector using the adapter. My Macbook is set to mirror displays so as to project on the screen.
    No problems pre-Snow Leopard
    Any ideas?

Never mind I just fixed the problem by searching around the community and finding this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4024312
Anyway it was as simple as holding down the application in the dock and just selecting "Options -> Assign to -> None (rather than All Desktops).

  • Application server directory space

    Hi All,

    Hi Arindam,
    Thanks for your response.
I believe you have understood our req. correctly.
For an SAP directory , used space = ?, total space = ?
The External command 'ls' only returns the file names in a directory.
I am not sure on implementing the df-k suggested by you.
Is it a separate command or do i have to use it like this
'df -k' in a new command ? Did try this formation but could not get it to work.
    Returns  an error
'Can't exec external program (No such file or directory)                                                                                                                                                                                                        External program terminated with exit code 1
Appreciate your help on this issue.

  • Cursor jumps 10 spaces back with Leopard

Not sure how to solve this, but since upgrading to 10.5.1 my cursor randomly slows down then jumps back about 10 spaces. It does this in Microsoft Word for Mac and webapps. I'm running Firefox on an iBook G4. It's really frustrating. Have searched for a solution in this forum, but not finding one. Can anyone help?
    thanks.

I experienced this random-action cursor when first using Mail.app in Panther. That's why I went back to Eudora. Now that I'm on Leopard I find that the cursor spasms remain, though not quite as severe. I'm using Mail.app, mostly, and try to type slowly and carefully. That helps but the action is still there. The Apple key + z sometimes gets me back to where I was.
People have tried the usual recourses (telling the trackpad to ignore accidental brushes, etc.), but the problem is real, and it remains.
This is probably not high on Apple's current agenda even though it prevents at least some portion of the clientele from using Mail.app.
    It's a discouraging little problem.

  • Black MacBook keyboard jumps back spaces or up a few lines

My 2008 Black MacBook (MacBook 4,1) has developed an annoying tendency recently: whenever I am typing, and it matters not whether it is in Mozilla Thunderbird, LibreOffice or posts in Facebook, etc., it jumps back several spaces or up a few lines. At first I thought that perhaps the position of my hands while typing were touching something that causes this, but I can't figure out what would do that (as in what keyboard command would cause this). So, I am thinking itis something wrong with the BlackBook's keyboard itself.
    Any hints as to what?
    Thanks!

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We're all users here.
It could be caused by a bulging battery pack. When the battery is bulging noticeably, it can distort the keyboard/trackpad topcase enough to cause the keyboard/trackpad problem you describe.
To check, turn the computer off and remove the battery, then connect to the power adapter, and turn it back on. If the problem goes away with the battery removed, you need a new battery. Note that it can be difficult or impossible to re-install a badly-distorted battery.
While you can use the computer without a battery until you get a replacement, you might notice a decrease in performance. http://techcrunch.com/2008/11/22/macbook-performance-drops-37-percent-without-ba ttery-installed/
Replacement batteries are $129 from Apple, and less expensive alternatives are available from other sources. There are many threads in Apple Support Communities that list lower-cost sources. In my own experience, when the original battery on my mid-2007 MacBook began to bulge a bit after 4 years and 500+ cycles, without causing the keyboard problem, I replaced it with a lower-cost alternative. The replacement swelled enough to cause the erratic keyboard problem within 18 months and less than 200 cycles. So now I'm back to an Apple replacement.
