Applications launch slowly the first time, but...
Okay, not sure why this happens and I've been wondering about this for a LONG LONG time, but why is it that applications seem to take forever to launch the first time you launch them after booting up? If you quit the app and at some point relaunch it, then it almost opens instantly. However, if you shut down or restart the computer at some point and then launch the app again, it takes ages to launch again, but only the first time. This behaviour happens with both Apple and third party software.
I have checked all the usual suspects: hard drive space (only 52% used), hard drive hardware (passes diagnostic scanning), RAM (I have 8GB), desktop (it's not cluttered and contains no folders), disk permissions (verified and repaired), software (always updated with latest versions), widgets (don't have many installed), wallpapers (never use animated wallpapers), login items (hardly any), PRAM & SMC (I've reset these). So, basically, I think I've done everything except reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
My system specs are as follows:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 8 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP51.007E.B06
SMC Version (system): 1.33f8
Macintosh HD Capacity: 999.86 GB (999,860,912,128 bytes)
Macintosh HD Available: 472.71 GB (472,705,077,248 bytes)
So, as far as I can tell, I've got no explanation for this behaviour. It's very frustrating/annoying - but not enough for me to want to do a whole format/reinstall.
Any suggestions anyone? If not for a solution, what about an explanation as to what's happening?
Thanks!
Joe.
To understand the why of this relative slowliness, you must understand that no application is really self-contained, or standalone, whatever the OS. All applications rely on so-called native code to function. Basically, some libraries (graphics, mainly, but not only) that are already installed on your machine, as part of the system, or installed by some third-party software.
On a cold boot, all this needed code has to be launched and installed in memory (physical and/or virtual) before the application core can be launched too. In your case, maybe some preference files are corrupted somewhat, or permissions need repair. You can try the following experiment: create a new standard account, give it admin rights, log in this new account and check how long it takes for your usual applications to launch. If they're quicker, then there's a problem with your main account; if it takes them the same amount of time to launch than in your other account, then you might consider adding some RAM on your machine, or free some space on your hard drive.
Or both. Preferably both...

"you are opening application "xyz" for the first time are you sure you want
When working in Tiger or Panther if I click on a document eg: word, illustrator, photoshop, indesign. and the application that is supposed to open this document is not open already. You get a warning message. that says "you are opening application "xyz" for the first time are you sure you want to open it. " Even though this is not the first time the application has been launched. However if you launch the application from the applications folder or from the dock the warning does not appear.
How do you disable this warning or at least correctly inform the OS that the application has been opened before.application
This happens from clean installs and those that have their launch services database cleared the link from document to application survives a logout but not a restart. I know it is a security feature and not a bug but it would be nice to know where this cache/.plist is and why it is suffering from amnesia.
Textedit does not exhibit this behavior across installs but any other app does I get the warning whether it is a user with a lMichael,
This could be related to the Side effects of System cache cleaning.

Of course there is. There is with any computer system that you connect to the internet or transfers files to and from. When you run Windows on your Mac you increase the chance from zero that you will get a Windows based virus to virtualy the same risk as any other Windows user.
The weaknesses in Windows OS and applications are well trodden by virus and worm malcontents the world over. That doesn't mean that OSX is exempt though. All it will take is once and the entire Mac world will sit up and take notice......

Hi,
I have an iPod shuffle 4th generation and an iPod Nano 5th generation . The Nano wheel appears to have stopped working - I can't get it to play or anything. I've done the reset and it worked the first time, but now the only way I can get it to play anything is to shake it and go with the shuffle choices - I can't change volume, song, pause or turn it off.
So, I decided to start using the Shuffle which I was given as a present last year. I've plugged it into my laptop (running windows 8 and newest version of iTunes). It appears in iTunes on the left hand side, but when I click to sync (whether I tick sync all or choose artists) it says synched but has no music. It seems to not be linked to the music library - when I tick synch all songs, next to the "sync music" it says 0 songs?
Any help to fix either would be really appreciated - I'm without any music at the moment and I'm going away this weekend!
ThanksHi Bblairjones,
If you are having issues with your Nano and Shuffle, you may want to try the Troubleshooting Assistants on the following page:

I recently wanted to update my phone and so when i put it in recovery mode and tried to set it up it said that i had to enter the apple id that i used to set up the phone the first time but i dont know the information to my old account what can i do?
You will need to remember or find the id that you used, without it you won't be able to re-activate your phone - if you are on the activation screen then does that show the first letter of the id and the email provider's name ?
Do you know if you have any of the account's downloads in computer's iTunes library - if you do then you can get the id form that : Recovering a forgotten iTunes Store account name.
If not then see if you can find it via http://appleid.apple.com : Apple ID: How to find your Apple ID. -

I recently bought an iPhone and my charger is not working. It worked for the first time but now it is now it is not working. Can i get it replaced in India because i bought this phone from US?
The warranty is only good in the U.S.
You woulod have to send it to someone in the U.S. They could take it in and if it is defective, then it would be replaced. -

I install Adobe Acrobat 9 in my laptop which runs on windows 7. I use Firefox 3.6.8 and have the problem with the PDF file. The problem is I cannot open the PDF file in Firefox web browser at the first time I launch firefox. It shows a warning box without any message. Only OK button is shown so I can close it. However, if I manage to open the PDF file from my local computer by just using adobe acrobat itself then the PDF can be opened in the Firefox web browser. I followed the instruction on the mozilla help but nothing works for me. The problem still exists. I wonder if anyone have the same problem like me and know how to solve this. Thank you so much
Hi there!
I cannot help you, but I think we have a common problem: We got a system here running Vista SP1 with Acrobat 9 standard on it. When we open a pdf file it works normally, but when we open another pdf file, we see the first one in that second window.
Think that missing option to watch several files within a single window-thing messed up more than meets the eye ... but as we just purchased the 15 licenses, we have to use version 9.
I didn't find any clues on this problem, but I will post any new hints I get. -
The battery compartment door on my Magic Mouse appears to be jammed shut and will not open, the device is only 5 months old and this is the first time I have needed to open it to change the batteries. Are there any suggestions?
It could be you are approaching it incorrectly. It can be a tricky little gadget that actually works with minimal pressure.
Try turning over the mouse so the compartment panel faces you, optical sensor topmost. Then holding the mouse at each side but not on the panel itself, flick the small, black rectangular panel downwards. The top of the panel should spring out, though it may require you to manipulate it fully away from the mouse.
Once you have replaced the batteries, starting at the bottom reverse the procedure then clip into place. Remember to move the small switch next to the optical sensor upwards which should turn on the green light. Then click twice to connect. -
Suspends fails the first time, but succeeds the second time
Hi all,
I am running Arch Linux on my Dell XPS 15 9530 laptop, and overall I am very happy with the combination. I have however had some issues with suspending.
The problem is that the first time I try to suspend the machine it seems to go to sleep, but then two seconds later it automatically wakes up again. If I then immediately try again to suspend, it works (it does not wake up automatically). Does anyone know what could be going on, and how this can be fixed?
Usually I suspend from my gnome 3 desktop, but I have also tried to suspend directly using 'systemctl suspend' without having an X server running, and the result is exactly the same. I have tried a few versions of the vanilla kernel, but also the linux-lts and the linux-ck images, but to no avail.
Here is the output from dmesg, where suspend fails:

"Application opened for the first time" warning after every reboot
Hello, I have a problem with Lion 10.7.5. The system does not remember that I already opened applications before. After every reboot, every time I open an application it displays the warning as if it's the first time I'm opening it. Anyone knows how to solve this problem?
Thanks in advance for your help.In my case, the problem disappeared after I installed the 10.7.5 supplemental update.
