My mail application says "Mail quit unexpectantly".  It won't let me open mail.  How do i fix it?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. I know the report is long. Please post all of it anyway.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • I can not activate the automatic uppercase when writing a mail in the application of "mail" on my macbook pro?

    Hello,
My question is, when I write a mail with Mail.app, and I make a mistake (no matter what language you use) it doesn't put the red underlines as it does with everything else(pages, safari ....). But after a point, it doesn't correct the lowercase, so I have to spend a lot of time checking to not send mails with that error.
I have already activated all options on the menu of "mail" for autocorecion, and yet not self-correcting. What can i do?

    Hi pstevereynolds,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The article below will help you troubleshoot the issue you are having with the language settings in the iTunes application.

  • Processing speed of my MacBook is extremely slow when opening applications, whether Mail, Safari or MSOffice

    Problem description:
The processing speed of any function is extremely slow - such as opening Mail, Safari, clicking on a page within Safari, switching to MS Word, adding a window in Safari, loading a page from Safari.  I get the spinning wheel most of the time before the action is completed. All other Macs which are newer in my home WiFi network operate just fine. I have done a top level (novice) check for malware, and haven’t found anything.  Any help you can suggest would be truly appreciated! Thank you!

Before you do anything do you have a current backup? If not make one.
I don't see any of the usual software suspects associated with slow downs. You don't need the Seagate software, you should uninstall that.
Reset the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support  and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
You only have 2GB of ram and could upgrade to 8GB, but Snow Leopard should run ok in 2GB.....not great but ok.
Start up in Safe Mode OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support be paitient as it will take awhile to start as it checks and tries to repair any problems with the file system. Once it's completely started up you can restart normally.
Insert your Snow Leopard disc and restart while holding the C key. Run Disk Utility to repair the hard drive and permissions. While in Disk Utility check the SMART status of the hard drive, anything other than Verified indicates a problem with the hard drive.
Again, you only have 2GB of ram.....try restarting your Macbook every day.....it's been running for almost a week now.

  • Why do my applications hang (Mail, Disk Utility, Installer, Safari)

After the latest software update. Mail, Safari, Disk Utility, Installer, Activity monitor and some more applications do nothing more than jumping in the Dock and then hang-up with the spinning wheel always spinning... I think it was after the 2006-003 security update, or maybe the ITunes update....I'just don't know anymore...
I have tried to downgrade to the 10.3.7 combo update but the installer App behaves just the same... If it wasn't for Fire fox I wouln't be writing here.
During my search on these forums I have found a thread that stated that the latest ITunes update was responsible, I downgraded it to 6.0.1, and it worked until I restarted my mac... Then it didn't work anymore, all my Apple apps are not opening.
I really need some help with this...
The wierd thing is that all other (non-Apple) programs run just fine, like the whole Adobe CS and Macromedia Packages.
If anyone has a solution, please be so kind to let me know.
    Thanks all

Try this and see if it works for you.

    kmosx: Apps unexpectedly quit
    Posted: Dec 19, 2004 8:11 AM
Here are some possible reasons for this problem.
    1. Recent Update: Download and reapply the most recent Combo Update: Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9 or Mac OS X Update 10.4.2 Combo
    2. Font duplicates: Please read the articles by Kurt Lang and J.Otava here: Kurt Lang: Font Management in OS X Panther and J.Otava: Fonts & Apple Type Services
    3. Corrupted preferences:
Go to Users/Your_Name/Library/Preferences and trash the files:
    - com.apple.ATS.plist
    - com.apple.BezelServices.plist
Restart. If this did not help, go to Users/Your_Name/Library and drag the folder Preferences to the desktop. Restart and see if this solved the problem
    4. Permissions:
    Symptoms:
    a. Only Apple applications affected
    b. Also happens when you switch to a new user.
    c. First appeared after update to 10.3.4, 10.3.5 or 10.3.6
This usually happens if you do not repair permissions before you update to 10.3.4 or later. There are (unconfirmed) hints that corrupted cache files might also contribute to this problem. You can clean caches with programs like Cocktail or Panther Cache Cleaner. The only solution I am aware of is to do an Archive&Install.
You also might want to read this article: Applications don't work after reinstalling Mac OS X
Remember: Repair permissions before and after an update!
If none of the above solves the problem you might have to do an Archive&Install:
    1. Insert the Install CD 1 and reboot while holding down the c-key
    2. Once you are booted go to the menu and select disk utility
    3. Repair the disk and Repair permissions!
    4. Quit disk utility and proceed with the installation
    5. Under "options" select "Archive&Install" and check the box "keep user and network data".
    6. Install Panther
    7. Restart
    8. Go to the folder Application/Utilities and run disk utility to repair permissions again.
    9. Download (or open if you downloaded before) Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9 or Mac OS X Update 10.4.2 Combo and install it.
    10. Restart and repair permisssions
    11. Go to the Apple menu and select "Software Update"
    12. Install all missing updates and restart.
    13. Repair permissions

  • Mail application showing mail in inbox as an error

My mail application on a 3G iPhone is stuck displaying 52 messages when infact there are none in the inbox. I've searched the support section but can't find any details on this. Any ideas anyone?

    Hey Frank,
What type of email account is this? Can you login and check the Inbox via Safari?
    Try resetting the iPhone. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305743
If you continue see an incorrect number of emails, try deleting the email account from the iPhone and then adding it again.

  • New mail applications/reading mails in non-latin alphabet foreign languages

I work with China and Korea a lot. And I receive emails in Korean and Chinese language.
How do I allow my mail to read emails in Korean and Chinese. I have a friend who can read his iPhone emails in Japanese but I cannot read my iPhone emails in Korean and so I wonder if he has some kind of setup thats different than me.
Also, I am curious to know some opinions about any other mail applications for Mac that anyone can suggest and reasons why they prefer it over the standard mail application, if they do at all.
    Thanks
    Dan

I cannot read my iPhone emails in Korean and so I wonder if he has some kind of setup thats different than me.
If your problem relates to the operation of your iPhone, please use this forum instead:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1139
The iPhone lacks various language capabilities which are in the full OS X. I think emails may have to be in UTF-8 encoding to be received correctly.
If you have problems reading non-latin emails in the full OS X, let us know. Usually they can be solved by switching the encoding in Message > Text Encoding.

  • Mail Icon is missing, and unable to open from Applications.  (Mail 3.6 is not supported is the error message)  I am on Lion OSX 10.7.3.

I closed the mail folder when I did a software update.  This morning, the mail icon is missing, and am not able to open from applications, or find it anyware in the toolbar.    Error message says that Mail 3.6 is not supported by OSX Lion 10.7.3

Xcode 4.x cannot be installed on Snow Leopard.  You need a 3.x.  So if that is what you used then yes, you need to install lion.   If connect.apple.com still alows registration or logins using an existing appleid then you could download the last xcode 3.2.6 for free.

  • Changing Default Application in Mail

Whenever I open a Word or Excel attachment in mail, it always defaults to Work or Excel in Windows (via Parallels desktop). Is there a way to change the default applications to be Word'04 and Excel'04 via Leopard?
I have Word and Excel for Leopard, and Word and Excel for Windows both installed since I run Parallels Desktop.

Option Click on the attachment and select Open With and choose the application you want to use.
Also with the attachment disembodied from the email, you can select it separately in Finder and open the Get Info to perform the same task and there you can select Change All, to the Mac application you prefer.

  • Mail application (besides Mail.app) that will sync with iTunes?

    HEre's the deal:
I run a lot of websites. 50 or so are hosted per dedicated server. Lots of websites means... lots of email addresses. Mail.app in it's infinite wisdon of creating somehting like 4 IMAP connections per email address often crashed the IMAP service on the otherwise exteremely relaiabl;e and well-appointed servers. The ONLY reason I'm still using it at this point is because in addition to running 3 Mac's, I also have the bevvy of iPods, iPhones and iPads. The fact that I can sync my mail withe them is a huge deal and a timesaver to me. Take for instance today. I am launching 2 new sites. I just created the standard 5 email addresses for each sites. That's 10 new email addresses and settings I'd have to put into 3 iOS devices.
So, is there any commercially available Mail application nthat can sync with iTunes? I HAVE to ditch Apple Mail, there's no way aroud that unless they fix the IMAP issue that I've read countless threads of people complaining to Apple about.
I'd like to just do this once... it's going to be a huge pain in my a$$ so any help minimizing that aspect of the move would be greatly appreciated.

    Outlook will work.

  • Duplicate contacts when created from another application like Mail

When adding a contact to Address Book from another application (from an email signature for example) two of the same contact are always created.  This does not happen when creating a contact from within Address Book.  Anyone have this problem and correct it?

known bug, please send feedback to apple about your situation. http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Address book has a feature "look for duplicates" under Card in the menu bar. This will merge duplicate entries into on. But now I have some weird double names (but they're one contact/one card).

  • Automatic rotation in some applications (SMS, Mail, Safari...)

    Hi,
I got a friend who has a second hand iPhone3G with IOS4.1, and when she enters Message, Mail or Safari, the iPhone turn 90° automatically and displays in landscape mode. I couldn't find anything to keep it in Portrait mode ?!?
Is it a software issue or a hardware one ?
(the phone itself has a problem: the phone speaker doesn't work, the only way to communicate in phone mode is the headset or the speaker mode).
    Thanx

I had a similar problem (Mail, Safari, Installer, widgets, Interarchy crashing on startup). I read about the Security Update 2007-006 (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305759) which I had installed just before I started having problems. Based on that info, I replaced the WebKit and WebCore (~/System/
Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework) folders from a backup I made before the Security Update and the problem was solved. From looking at the newer version (the one that didn't work) I'm guessing the installation didn't complete as there were only many fewer items in the new folder than the old one.
I had a similar problem once before (maybe sometime around 10.4.5 update) and it was fixed by running the installer package again, but since installer was crashing too, that wasn't an option this time.
Is this a totally harebrained theory, or is it possible to have an incomplete install of an update without getting any error messages?

  • Mail icon is missing from Dock and not in Applications folder.  What to do?

My email icon disappeared from my dock when I turned off my computer.  In the past I go to the Applications folder and just drag the Mail application to the dock and I am good to go.  Now my Mail program is no longer in my Application folder.  Is there a site I can go to and download the Mail application for MacBook?  I am using Mac OS X 10.5.8
    Thanks!

I actually found the System disk and reinstalled all of the Applications (including Mail), but when I went to open it, it said "this version of Mail does not work with the Operating System (Mac OS X 10.5.8).  What now?!
    Thanks.
