Applications not marked as running in the Dock

Hi all,
I have a new MBP Retina, which came with Lion, but which I immediately upgraded to Mountain Lion.  I'm a long-time Mac user, and I love this new one, but the Dock is behaving strangely.  After using the computer for a while, programs no longer get marked as "running" with the little light under them in the dock.  In addition, the right-click menu for that program shows "Open", not "Quit", even though the program is already running.  This behavior continues until I reboot.  Then the Dock works correctly for a while, but eventually reverts to the problem.
Lest you think I'm crazy, I took a screen shot that clearly shows the light under Mail, but _not_ under Safari, even though the screen shot shows that Safari is open.  Further, you can see that the right-click option is to "Open" Safari, not quit it.  You can see the screen shot at http://flic.kr/p/cQtbcf
Any suggestions, other than very Windows-like rebooting multiple times a day?

It could be the Dock prefs
Go to your Finder "Go" menu choose "Go to Folder" and enter ~/Library/Preferences. Then delete these files and restart or log out and back in.
com.apple.dock.plist
com.apple.dock.db
com.apple.dock.extra.plist
You need to reset your Dock the way you like it.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I think that your Mac detects your hard disk, but the problem is that your new hard disk doesn't contain any operating system, so your Mac doesn't find any bootable partition and you see a question mark.
If your Mac came with DVDs, insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and hold the C key while your Mac is starting. Then, just install Mac OS X. If the hard disk isn't prepared to install Mac OS X, you will have to erase it using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". See > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html

  • The Fan option does not appear for folders in the dock.

The fan option does not appear on folders on the Dock. Stack option is checked, but all I get is grid list and automatic....running 10.5.2
    any ideas?

Not that I know of. When on the side no fan for folders and no 3D look, which I prefer. Background of the Dock very dark so the white dot showing an app is open is easy to see and it all looks very sophisticated.
You might check with third party apps to see if anyone is changing that, but most people don't like the fan so I doubt if anyone is working to add it in.

  • ICal failing to run applescripts: The 'Open' button does not change to 'Run', and the script file is opened but not executed on alert.

iCal failing to run applescripts: The 'Open' button does not change to 'Run', and the script file is opened but not executed.

Calendar (not called iCal anymore) does not include that capability any longer, apparently.  What you have to do now is go to Automator and create a Calendar Alert action.  You can add a Run AppleScript object to the action and paste in your script there, then when you save it, it will become available as a choice in the alert menu in Calendar.

  • HT2474 I have an application that cannot be removed from the dock.  It is not the finder or the trash icons.  I cannot place it into the trash can either.  Any suggestions?

I cannot get rid of an icon on the dock.  It is not the finder and it is not the trash.  I tried sending it to the trash can, unsuccessful.  Tried taking it away from the dock without succes either.  Suggestions?

    What is the application?
Place your cursonr on it and wait.  A little pane will come up to tell you what the application is

  • Two apps running, but the Dock doesn't seem to know about them

In the last couple of days I have quit and restarted Firefox and then Safari.  Both apps are up and running with multiple windows and tabs open, but according to the Dock they are not running.  The light is not lit up next to the app icon, and when you right-click on the icon the menu doesn't show any of the open windows, just the "Open" option like you would expect for an application not running.  If I click on the app icon, it does bring the app to the front, and the menus and user interface seem to work fine.
I've had this happen before, with Firefox, but now it seems to be spreading to Safari...
    Huh?

First thing I would try is to restart from a complete shutddown. Sometimes fixes minor glitches like that.
Have you tried moving ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist to the trash? I've never done this, but I'm guessing it will remove all your Dock settings. Then, killall Dock log out and back in. (Or just try killall Dock first) Don't empty the trash just yet, if no improvement, use File>Put Back.

  • How do I not display some icons on the Dock?

I have a few apps which I'm always running, and they do more backgroundy tasks that I don't really need a dock icon for. It's just filling up my already over-crowded dock up with useless icons. Is it possible to hide the icons of some apps even when they're running?

Actually, there is a way to hide dock icons of running applications. It's not a simple checkbox-type option (unless the application itself provides the option), but it is doable.
You need to edit the "Info.plist" file of each application you want to hide. Lets say the application is Safari (which you obviously wouldn't want to hide). You would go to Safari in the Applications folder. Ctrl-click on it and choose "Show Package Contents." Go into the Contents folder, and there will be a file called "Info.plist" Ctrl-click on it, go to "Open with" and click on other and select TextEdit in your Applications folder. Anywhere in the document, paste the following onto their own lines:
    [KEY]NSUIElement[/KEY]
    [STRING]1[/STRING]
Save the document. Now the next time you open the Safari, it's Dock icon will be hidden. Since the Dock icon is gone, that means you can't select the app, so you can't get to it's menus to change options and it will not show up in the Force Quit dialog (but if you need to, you can force quit it in Activity Monitor), so you obviously wouldn't want to do this for Safari or any other programs you regularly interact with.
If you need to unhide the Dock icon later, just change the 1 to a 0. I would do this with the app closed, but if you can't then you'd probably just have to restart it. Also, you may have to do this again if the app is updated.
    Hope this helped.

  • Employee is not able to run in the payroll

    Hi
After running the payroll we found out some employees didn't process. The payroll has completed successfully but in the result run values for those employees there is no data not even one element has been processed.we have checked in the element entries, none of the elements have been marked as processed.
The employees do not have any future termination end date or suspension and even the quick pay does not work
Does anyone know what might be the problem?why the payroll is not computing for them?
Can someone please advice how we can solve this issue.
    Regards

If the same Bonus element is working for some other employee and not this employee, then it is an issue with Assignment data of the employee.
As the Bonus element has no processing(if you give Pay Value an amount), it should definitely be something to do with element entry dates or the assignment.
It is really strange that for such a simple element it doesn't work.
Not sure if you're checking all the data is correct.
Unless I can see what you're doing, I cannot say much.

  • Getting Applications folder to show "properly" on the dock

I upgraded two machines to Lion and the Applications folder shows up on the Dock as it was under Snow Leopard.
Today my new MBA arrived and if I try to put the Applications folder on the dock the first Application shows as the icon. I can't find a way for it to use the "blue folder" I know they want us to use Launch Pad but.......

Sorry but that is what I did. You have to put it below the dots where open files go but it does not give you a folder it gives an icon that looks like your first icon in the Applications folder which happens to be the address book. It isn't exactly the same because the address book looks like it is part of a big stack of other icons.

  • Mobile device manager is using over 50% of my CPU and slowing down my computer, is there any way to change this? I have an Ipad and my kids have an Ipod so I can't disable this but I would really like to not have it running all the time

I recently got an Ipad 2 as well as an ipod touch.  I have 2 laptops at home that I have synced the devices with, one is running vista and the other XP.  Both of the computers are now running really slow and when I checked my CPU usage it is showing that mobile dvice manager is using around 50% of my CPU and it is constantly running in the background.  I am wondering of anyone has any suggestions on how to keep dvive manager from running when my Ipad is not even connected to the computer.

Final Cut will not shut down ..... stays in the dock and I have to physically reboot

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean by stuck in Dock.
You reboot your Mac. Is FCP trying to open automatically (the icon bouncing)? Or is it just visible in the Dock?

Is it ok to plug my phone into just the cord and not the dock, this way i can keep my case on. Is there any difference besides just having it sit up in the docking station.

Since I don't have a desktop, I never use the iPhone dock - I use the cable only - for charging my iPhone and Apple bluetooth headset and for syncing.

Failed to process the request: Request refers to an unknown session
    Correction Hints
The request refers to a session that doesn't exist. Reasons might be one of the following: a) Wrong URL is used to request the application (i.e. there might be a typo in the URL). b) Request with wrong parameters is sent by the client (might also indicate an unfriendly attack). c) Request belongs to a session that expired already some time ago and is no longer traced on the server. If the problem persists, record the HTTP traffic to analyse the causing requests.

  • My documents and application folders are no longer on the dock, where did they go?

my documents and applications are no lnger on the dock, where did they go, how do I put them back?

Items in your Dock are actually aliases. The original items should be where they always were. The Applications folder is at the top level of your hard drive, and your Documents folder is in your home folder.
To recreate the those items in your Dock, open a Finder window (Finder > File menu > New Finder window.) For your Documents folder, click on the icon on the left of the Finder window that has your username on it next to a house icon. Look for your Documents folder. Drag this folder into the Dock. That places an alias of it in the Dock (the original item remains where it was.)
To get so you can see the Applications folder, click it on the left side of the Finder window, then go to the Go menu and select Enclosing Folder. Now drag the Applications folder from here into the Dock.
That should do it. Best of luck.
