Applications not quitting

Hi Folks,
I recently upgraded my venerable iMac 2.16GHz, 1GB RAM from Tiger to Snow Leopard (10.6.4). Since then I have found that almost any application I run will respond normally until I try to quit it. At that point it seems to quit but the little glowing dot under the application icon in the Dock remains there. Also if I choose Force Quit the panel appears and has the name of the errant application listed as available to be force quit.
I have looked at Activity Monitor and it doesn't seem to have anything with the relevant name listed as using resources but I am not familiar enough with this stuff to be certain about what this means. This happens on all applications I have tried and multiple restarts, seem to have had little or no effect. If anyone has any gems of wisdom, hints, tips or general advice I would be delighted to hear them. As always, thanks for listening.

Hi leroydouglas
Thanks for the reply. Just for the record I've been using Macs since 1991. The command-Q keystroke is one of my personal favourites.
I have tried the following to quit the various apps:
CMD-Q while in the desired application
Choosing Quit "Application Name" from the Application Menu
Choosing Quit from the pop-up menu in the Dock
all to no avail.

  • Applications Not Quitting and Restart Hanging

I have recently converted to OSX with Mac Pro from PC but I have had trouble with various programs (Pages, Photoshop for example) hanging and when I try a force quit, the applications can not be restarted without trying to restart the operating system. I then try to restart by selecting "Restart" and all of the icons disappear, but the background stays on and the computer hangs in that state without rebooting. The only way to resolve the situation is to turn off the computer with the start button and then restart manually. This is continuing and is a nuisance, if nothing more. Any suggestions?

    HI,
You have a bevy of issues there.
How much free disk space is there? Control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is at least 10% available disk space, 15% is better.
As Sig suggests... check the hard disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode

  • IMac not quitting applications

I'm having a persistent problem with applications not quitting when I close them and prompting a Force Quit action ('Quit' fails). Sometimes an open application will prevent my computer from going to sleep/shutting down. Dealing with this is now a daily chore. Some of the applications doing this include: Mail, Address Book, NeoOffice, Google Chrome, iTunes, Guitar Pro 6...
Anyone have any insight to share on this issue?

Here is the long explanation from another person having this problem:

  • "The application iChat quit unexpectedly"; "Library not loaded"?

Whenever I try to launch iChat, I receive "the application iChat quit unexpectedly" error.
Neither "Relaunch" nor "Reset and Relaunch" fix the issue, and when I click "Report" and view the "Report Details" it gives the output enclosed below.
The gist of the error is "Library not loaded: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ScreenSharing.framework/Versions/A/ScreenShar ing".
It also says "Reason: no suitable image found", but it also says it:
    "Did find:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ScreenSharing.framework/Versions/A/ScreenShari ng: unknown file type, first eight bytes: 0x6E 0x61 0x6D 0x65 0x20 0x20 0x48 0x42"
I've removed and reinstalled iChat (when in Safe Boot -- with the Shift key) from Disk 1 of the Mac OS X Install disk 1 by using the "Optional Installs.mpkg" installer and selecting only iChat, but I still receive the same error.
How can I reinstall this "ScreenSharing" library? Would that likely fix the issue?
PS - I just realized that if I go to "System Preferences" and click "Sharing", the options are totally blank! I can't see any options or change any Sharing configuration! All my other System Preferences show up correctly.
So now the question becomes, how do I install just the "Sharing" System Preference?
Or should I try to reset permissions on the Sharing System Preference somehow?
    Thanks!!

  • AIR application not able to quit on Mac OS X

    Hello,
I've created an Adobe AIR (1.5) application and have installed it successfully on multiple PCs and Mac computers.  On a Mac OS X 10.5.6 laptop the application will not 'quit' using either the top Apple Menu bar quit item or from the icon in the Dock.  The only way to quit is to select the 'Quit Application' function I built that opens from the Dock Item (on top of the apple-specific quit function from the Dock icon).  Has anybody else experienced a similar issue?
    Thank you,
    Jason

Listening for the Exit event and then invoking NativeApplication.exit() is not required (unless your application is doing something specifically with Exit event handling).
I see that the original posts around this issue were last year and were against AIR 1.5....
If possible, could you please re-test your application with the recently release AIR 2 runtime (available here http://get.adobe.com/air/) and let us know if you still see the problem?  And if you do, if you could share a small application that demonstrates the issue it would be extremely helpful.
    Thanks,

  • How come a force quit application would NOT quit?

    Hi,
I have now had two instances when an application which I needed to force quit, would not quit.
Both instances were with _*Elgato EyeTV version 2.5(3011)*_. OK the application would look as if it quits and disappear form the screen, but when checking in the DOCK the little triangle is there there. There was an error message "-600".
I tried to repeat force quit to no avail. Douple clicking to restart the programme fully would not work either. Restarting would however resolve the problem.
I suppose I should have tried to kill the application in TERMINAL.
    Any other explanations?
Has anybody else come across resilient applications like that?
    Regards

    Thanks,
I agree - force quit works better when first activating the Finder. If that gives you the rolling ball, trying the Activity Monitor is a good option.
But the two events I am referring to are clearly different: ok, I used the Blue Apple Force Quit option, but the application would only sort of 'half quit'. There would be an error message: - 600. Also the Activity triangle in the dock would still be there. It would again be listed as an active application in the Blue Apple 'Force Quit' window. Force quitting in this window, would again remove it from that list, but the triangle would remain unchanged.
Also starting the application again would not work. - OK, I did not try killing it in TERMINAL then,
as I was about to switch off anyway. I used the Blue Apple option for that. No problems with it.
Restarting later was without problems either.
It just looks as if this particular application Elgato EyeTV +*would get stuck 'half way' after force quitting*+... Odd!
Have you observed anything like that with any application?
    Regards

I can't launch Safari. When I right click on the icon, the "Application not responding" is grey and no matter what method I use to Force quit, I get no response.

    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

I keep getting the notice on my desktop, "The application arch quit unexpectedly.  could not load inserted library: /Library/Application Support/DriveGenius/libdf.dylib".
If I dismiss the notice it reappears in 10 seconds., crashes every 10 seconds.
I'm assuming that Application Arch is an archive file.
I've got several hundred archive files according to the app "Find Any File", dunno which is the offending one.
In /Library/Application Support there's no DriveGenius/libdf.dylib to be found, not even in ~Library/Application Support. I can't even locate a DriveGenius/libdf.dylib file anywhere in my system.

Have never been able to get this application, adobe acrobat dc, to work on my mac. Constantly goes into "application not responding" mode. Happen to anyone else and know how to fix it?

    Hi Nicholas,
Verify if Protected View and Enhanced Security are Off. Go to Acrobat-> Preferences -> Security (Enhanced):
Also having too many fonts active can hurt the performance of any application.
Try the step 10 of the KB: https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-fonts-mac-os-x.html

  • I-photo in ilife 08 unexpectedly quits -  os 10.4.10 does not quit

Running iphoto in ilife '08 on i-mac G-5, OS 10.4.10,Have created numberous book
    Background:
I have successfully assembled 4 books, simple, 20 page iphoto 08 books and saved to iphoto then to iweb.
Yet when assembling a ibook at page 35, I went into creative mode,
double clicked on image, made adjustments and the computer went into a 1 hour loop. I finally cut off computer. I can turn on computer, load iphoto, appears to work, when attempting to open the book the application "unexpectedly quits"
I cannot get the 35 page book to open,I have uploaded the software updates, reinstalled i-life 08, to the extent you can with the disk.
    QUESTION...
While waiting for apple developers to figure out the patch, how can I take the 480 images from iphoto 08 copy to a flash drive and assemble a book on one of my other computers running the stable iphoto 06.
Or is there a fix for Iphoto 08?
    Thanks

    Bob:
There are a couple of possible fixes here.
1 - do you have any text fields that are unused? If so just put a space in it and try again.
2 - others have reported it was the editing of the file while in the book mode that would cause the crashing. Their solution was to do the editing in the main Library and not while in the book mode. You may have to remove that photo from the book, edit it and then add back.
See if either of those will help.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Finder got an error. Application not running (-600)

I have a LaunchAgent that calls a shell script, at login.  The shell script runs and determines the users AD container and then will runn the correct applescript application depending on the AD Container.    The applescript applications simply mount up the users network volumes, runs a few do shell scripts and then exits.
It works and has been working for quite some time, under 10.5.x, 10.6.x, 10.7.x and even 10.8.x.  But I have started getting a few users who are getting a rather odd message in the logs that the script creates and I can't really find anything on the error message.
"Finder got an error.  Application not running (-600)"
If I log the user in and run the following at the command line:
    launchctl unload name.of.plist
    It will unload the launchagent.
If I type this at the commane line:
    launchctl load name.of.plist
    It works perfectly.  No errors.
I can manually run the shell script it calls and that works fine.
I can also manually double click the apps and those run fine.
I've changed the permissions, I've recopied, re-imaged, but I can not figure out why the script won't sometimes and gives me that error message.
Has anyone seen this error message before and what I can try to do to fix it?
    Thank you in advanced.

This sounds like a typical race condition, and it's impossible to solve without seeing the script.
The issue is that your script is targetting some application that isn't available. Ordinarily AppleScript will launch an application if it's not already running, but during launch it's possible that your script is trying to target an application before it can be launched (because the user's envirnment is still loading).
So you need to look at the script to see what it's doing, and what apps it's targeting. The fix might be as simple as adding a few delays to allow the system to finish logging in, but t's hard to say without more data.

  • Mail Viewer Window Does Not Open on Launch. Mail Will Not Quit. MAIL BADGER

<UPDATE> After detailing all of the problems below, I discovered that trashing the Mail Badger bundle solved all of the below problems. I am still posting this just in case anybody else has this problem.
    Problems:
    1. When opening mail.app, the program opens, but it does not launch a Viewer Window. I can open a viewer window manually from the File menu, however.
    2. When quitting mail.app, it will not quit. It does not matter whether I hit command-Q, or Mail>Quit Mail, or right-click on dock icon and click Quit. The only way for me to quit is Force Quit. No matter what Quit command I execute, nothing happens. The Viewer Window does not close. (The Viewer Window will close on command, however, either by clicking the red 'x' or by command-W, or by File>Close.
    3. Cannot send mail from mail.app. Upon clicking "send" on a new email, it just goes to the Outbox and sits there forever. I can try sending the email again from the Outbox, but nothing happens. (I have 4 gmail accounts, with a couple thousand messages between them. There are no problems with port configurations or smtp servers or anything like that - I am fairly certain anyway because nothing has changed w/ regard to the account settings between the time it was working and the time it stopped working.)
    4. After minimizing the Viewer Window, clicking on the mail.app dock icon does not restore the Viewer Window. The only way to restore the Viewer Window is to click on the Viewer window itself in the dock, rather than clicking on the application icon.
Notes: I have installed 10.4.10. I have also installed Safari Beta 3.0.2
I previously installed Safari Beta 3.0, then uninstalled it and upgraded to 3.0.2. I don't recall when the problems started, (under 3.0 or 3.0.2), but they all happened at the same time (rather than one at a time).
I have uninstalled Safari 3 and reverted to Safari 2, but this does not fix the problems.
    I have repaired disk permissions.
I have booted from the OS X Install disk and repaired my startup disk.
I have not had any problems with Safari 3 "hanging" on install, thus corrupting the WebKit, as described in other threads.

I had the same issue and resolution. Spotlight search for "Mail Badger" and deleting everything resolves the issue.
    I'm also running Safari 3.0.2 and 10.4.10...
I've emailed the developer to let him know about it..

  • Microsoft Word Freezing Repeatedly, Application Not Responding

Just wondering if anyone else was having issues with Microsoft Word from MS Office 2008, where you open the application, you type a few sentences, and the application freezes with the spinning circle of death that won't go away until you click the dock where it says "application not responding" and do a force-quit? You can leave the circle spinning for 10-20-30 minutes, and it never goes away.
Now for the weird part--this error only happens for me when I'm using a specific document on my computer. I can open Word, start a new document, type several paragraphs of text, and it works fine. But I've been working on an existing paper for about two months that all of a sudden started causing these freezes/crashes when editing it. It's about 30 pages roughly, no images, no big inserts that would take up a lot of memory (116 kb in size). And up until today, there were no problems. So why all of a sudden can't I edit anything on this paper without freezing the program?! I downloaded the Microsoft Office 2008 Service Pack 1 that was just released after this problem started, and ran all the recent Java and program updates through Software Update with computer restarts. I even copied the text from the Word document I was working on, pasted it into a new document, tried saving it as both .doc and .docx, and again the program still freezes when working with that text in a new file. This one baffles me. It's like the text within a document is somehow freezing the application. One thing I did notice is that the freezes seem to happen when I'm scrolling using a mouse wheel. Not always, but quite a bit. I suppose this is some memory issue related to several pages of text that the program can't render or process when you add new lines of text or scroll, but again, I can't figure why this paper I've been working on for months all of a sudden decided to start freezing Word today. Can you really only have 30 double-spaced pages of text in Word before it crashes?
Looks like I've found my reason to switch to Open Office, since I'm 3-4 days out from a deadline. Any other solution strategies would be welcome. Thanks.

Same problem here - Microsoft Word 2008 (update 12.1.7) will open fine, and then start the spinning pizza of death. Only way out is to force-quit the app. I've tried:
    1) deleting plist and font cache files
    2) uninstalling MS Office 2008, reinstalling and then re-applying updates 12.1.0 and 12.1.7
    3) confirming that Apple's Font Card.app can verify all fonts
No luck. Currently I can't open any MS word doc without the spinning pizza of death.
If you are lucky enough that these symptoms only happen with a specific Word .doc file, I would see if the PC-originator could re-save the file as .RTF and resend. If you can then open it OK, you could revert back to .doc (or .docx) format. RTF format is Microsoft's interchange format. If there are anomalies in the .doc file, saving as .RTF can sometimes clean them up. Once done, you can revert back to native MS Word format.

  • Mouse over dock icon no longer indicates "application not responding"

A very convenient feature seems to be missing from Snow Leopard. In prior versions, if an application was not responding, holding the cursor over its dock icon would display "[Application] Not Responding" and also an option to Force Quit. This status message does not appear in Snow Leopard.
Are we to assume that if we click and hold on a dock icon and "Force Quit" is presented as an option, that the application has stopped responding?
    Suggestions?

    drdocument wrote:
    Thanks!
So if I click and hold a dock icon and "Force Quit" is shown instead of "Quit" would that indicate that the particular application is in the midst of some process and simply unable to respond?
Should I simply allow more time for the app to finish whatever it's doing?
it could be either. sometimes an application is busy and is showing as not responding but will come out of it after a while. but sometimes it's truly hanging and then you have to force quit it to get rid of it. there is no way to tell just by looking at the dock. give it a bit of time and if it's still not responding then force quit. but if it's happening all the time then you may have problems with your system.
In particular, here, I've launched DiskWarrior 4.2 on a Mini (via Screen Sharing from my Mac Pro) in an attempt to rebuild directory on a My Book 1TB external drive connected by FireWire, which Disk Utility indicates needs repair but DU cannot repair. Ideas?
so what does disk warrior say when you try to rebuild the directory? and you should also verify the internal drive on the mini too.
