Applications not responding/won't open

All of a sudden today many applications will not open. They bounce for awhile on the dock, and I have to force them to quit. However, they won't even show up in the force quit menu I have to hold down the control key and click force quit twice. This first began with Skype and now it has affected ichat and gizmo project (another online calling program).
I am running 10.3.9 which I updated a few weeks ago (so that I could run Skype).
The only other changes I've made recently are updating itunes and quicktime.
I'm studying in Italy right now so I'm not sure where to go for help. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it.

I would use the Accounts System Preferences to create a new user. Log out and log in as the new user. Do the same applications fail to mount for the new user? If so, you have a system-wide problem. If they open for the new user, then your original user has a preference or setting that's causing the trouble. Let us know how this goes and we'll have some more suggestions depending on this troubleshooting step.

  • Application Not Responding When I Open a Library

    Clearly Final Cut Pro 10.1 created libraries when I upgraded.
    I have a collection of critical clip projects on an external drive which were put into a Library.
    Every time I attempt to open them — from inside or outside the app — then the program freezes and I have to force quit.
    Is this upgrade just dreck, or do I not know what the **** I'm doing?
    I have a TON of work that was so easy to access and work with in the previous version. Now I'm dead in the water.

    That almost sounds like Final Cut did this automatically before you had a chance to open it for the first time. Is that the case or were you initially able to work within the app after updating? (If you've never been able to open it, then skip over the next paragraph.)
    If the app opened for you initially, you should have gotten a dialogue window asking you whether you wanted to update all or some of your projects and events now or to update later.  If you clicked Update All, it should have created a library for every mounted drive and event for each library called Updated Projects. Did you try to open any or all of the Updated Projects events? Did you move any of the files among events and/or libraries – either in the app or in the Finder? Did you do any
    Also, for each mounted drive FCPX should have created a folder in the Finder called Old Projects and Events. Can you find the folders?
    Do you have a backup of 10.0.9 – either that you archived or from a Time Machine (or some other utility) BU you could restore from?

  • IMovie won't open - "Application Not Responding"

    I can't get iMovie to successfully launch. When I try, the iMovie program window never shows. Right clicking on the active iMovie icon in the dock shows "Application Not Responding."
    I've tried restarting, booting into safe mode, and reinstalling iMovie. No luck.

  • Can't Open 3rd party Apps with my User (Icon Bouncing then Application Not Responding)

    Problem:
    I can't Open 3rd Part Apps with my user (FireFox, Chrome, Dropbox, GoogleDrive, Mega, Final Cut Pro X, etc) they just star bouncing and after a while they stop bouncing then i righ click on them and it says "Application Not Responding", but i can open native apps like Safari, iTunes, iMovie, Finder, Settings
    Other Events:
    -Just Before this happend i was editting a video on FCPX, y export it and tried to upload to Google Drive (in Chrome), when it was uploading I closed FCPX and the uploading stop it at 91%, y tried to reupload but then I realized that this video was in a temp folder and it wasnt there anymore, so I open FCPX to export it again and i couldnt, it was just bouncing and then "App not responding".
    -After Installing Yosemite i feelt it slow even after it finished the encriptation File Vault, specially in chrome.
    I have tried:
    1-Repair Disk Permisions
    2-Reset SMC
    3-Reinstall FCPX
    4-Decrypted the Disk and create another user and i was able to run Chrome, FireFox and FCPX, When I opened FCPX it started but when it was trying to open the project that i was working , it restarted the app and i couldnt open FCPX again, just bouncing and App Not Responding
    Any suggestions to keep my User working?

    Yes, as long as you let TM do a full disc backup (that is, you do not exclude anything in the TM backup settings) you will have a backup that allows a full system restore - puts everything back just as it was.
    You can also clone your system using the shareware app SuperDuper or the donation-ware app CarbonCopyCloner

    Both of these apps will make a true clone (literally, a bit-by-bit copy) of your hard drive onto an external drive.  This clone will actually be bootable itself (you plug in the drive and hold the option key during startup then select the clone to boot from).  You would boot from the clone, then reverse-clone it back onto your internal hard drive.
    If you are really serious about being highly confident of not loosing files, you could use both  - I keep a TM backup on one drive, and 2 clones on separate bus-powered hard drives.
    P.S. even if you had not had any issues, you really, REALLY should be keeping regular, up to date backups anyway - things go flooey without warning sometimes and you risk loosing everything on your machine if you DON'T keep regular backup copies available.

    You could try booting into Safe Mode to see if that will help. And "Repair Permissions" in Disk Utility.
    Have you got Keychain set to open on Login or is it attempting to open on it's own.

    Restart the machine in Safe Mode and attempt to open each app. Also please explain exactly how you are attempting to open the apps. For example, "When I click the Safari icon on the Dock it bounces but does not open." To start in Safe Mode hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup tone unitl a progress bar appears.

    Now Safari and Mail don't work. Mail won't open at all, and Safari launches but doesn't load and I get the spinning wheel.
    I used Disk Utility to fix permissions, and that didn't solve the problem, and now my Disk Utility also says "Application Not Responding".
    I also went back to Font Book and enabled all the fonts I disabled. Still nothing.
    ( I can use Netscape-so it's only Mac applications I guess)
    Any help is very much appreciated.

    Wow- i fixed it! I remembered that when I was in Font Book originally, there were some fonts disabled, and I enabled them.
    I couldn't remember EXACTLY which ones, but I disabled some I thought were the ones, and VOILA!
    Mail works, Safari works...what a relief!
    And it only took me HOURS...oh well.
    If this might help anyone, here are the fonts I disabled again-

  • Microsoft Word Freezing Repeatedly, Application Not Responding

    Just wondering if anyone else was having issues with Microsoft Word from MS Office 2008, where you open the application, you type a few sentences, and the application freezes with the spinning circle of death that won't go away until you click the dock where it says "application not responding" and do a force-quit? You can leave the circle spinning for 10-20-30 minutes, and it never goes away.
    Now for the weird part--this error only happens for me when I'm using a specific document on my computer. I can open Word, start a new document, type several paragraphs of text, and it works fine. But I've been working on an existing paper for about two months that all of a sudden started causing these freezes/crashes when editing it. It's about 30 pages roughly, no images, no big inserts that would take up a lot of memory (116 kb in size). And up until today, there were no problems. So why all of a sudden can't I edit anything on this paper without freezing the program?! I downloaded the Microsoft Office 2008 Service Pack 1 that was just released after this problem started, and ran all the recent Java and program updates through Software Update with computer restarts. I even copied the text from the Word document I was working on, pasted it into a new document, tried saving it as both .doc and .docx, and again the program still freezes when working with that text in a new file. This one baffles me. It's like the text within a document is somehow freezing the application. One thing I did notice is that the freezes seem to happen when I'm scrolling using a mouse wheel. Not always, but quite a bit. I suppose this is some memory issue related to several pages of text that the program can't render or process when you add new lines of text or scroll, but again, I can't figure why this paper I've been working on for months all of a sudden decided to start freezing Word today. Can you really only have 30 double-spaced pages of text in Word before it crashes?
    Looks like I've found my reason to switch to Open Office, since I'm 3-4 days out from a deadline. Any other solution strategies would be welcome. Thanks.

    Same problem here - Microsoft Word 2008 (update 12.1.7) will open fine, and then start the spinning pizza of death. Only way out is to force-quit the app. I've tried:
    1) deleting plist and font cache files
    2) uninstalling MS Office 2008, reinstalling and then re-applying updates 12.1.0 and 12.1.7
    3) confirming that Apple's Font Card.app can verify all fonts
    No luck. Currently I can't open any MS word doc without the spinning pizza of death.
    If you are lucky enough that these symptoms only happen with a specific Word .doc file, I would see if the PC-originator could re-save the file as .RTF and resend. If you can then open it OK, you could revert back to .doc (or .docx) format. RTF format is Microsoft's interchange format. If there are anomalies in the .doc file, saving as .RTF can sometimes clean them up. Once done, you can revert back to native MS Word format.

    Update firefox, it asked me to update flash, I tried to update flash but it said I had to close firefox. A box came up and said the Flash install would continue when I closed firefox. I closed all firefox windows and no update of flash occurred. I tried relaunching firefox but got the "Doesn't start when starting as administrator. I rebooted the system, no improvement. I tried to run firefox as administrator and got the same message. Either I find a fix or I won't be able to use firefox and will have to go back to ie.
