Applications open automatically on startup

I downloaded the newest version of yosemite and now when I turn on my imac several programs including office for mac (word, excel and PPT) automatically opens.  What do I need to do so that such programs do not automatically open but only are opened when I click on the appropriate application icon.

Check the list of login items in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences, and if you get a prompt at shutdown asking if you'd like to reopen the windows when logging back in, turn that option off.

  • Mail Opening Automatically At Startup... On Laptop Only

I'm having an interesting issue with my Mac setup, that I see has happened to others as well:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8750623&#8750623
Here's my problem: the Mail application opens automatically on every system startup on my MacBook (first gen, 10.5.6) but does not do so on my Mac Mini (also on 10.5.6, 1.83 Intel Core Duo)
I have tried everything to find out what's happening. Here's what I've tried:
    1. "Login at Startup" is not checked in the dock icon
    2. It isn't in /Library/StartupItems
    3. It is not added in the Login screen in System Preferences
    4. I've repaired permissions
    5. I've emptied all caches/etc
    6. I even checked startup items in Lingon, couldn't find anything
    7. I even tried a full erase and install on the MacBook
None of these worked. Even after the erase and install, my MacBook still loads Mail upon startup, when my Mini does not.
I've read in a few threads that if you have iCal set up to send email reminders, that could be contributing to this problem. That's annoying but at least it makes sense. What doesn't make sense is that it happens on only my laptop. Apparently, the other person who posted this problem is having the same issue (see link above.)
To elaborate further, I have two accounts in iCal - one for personal, and one for Google Calendar, which is synced over CalDAV.
Strangely enought, I have some email reminders that are sent from one email address, and some from another. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as far as to which email account is used to send the reminders.
Can anyone help with these two issues? I'll be willing to provide any further information if asked.

I have the same problem on my Macbook. I really hate Mail (I used it IMAP with Gmail and didn't like the way it handled at all) and was so frustrated with the pop-ups at login that I deleted Mail and all its related files -- and then program finder started popping up at login asking where mail had gone! I just deleted my calendars from iCal and am hoping that will make it stop. Don't know why it's so annoying, but it certainly is.

  • Hi, sorry this is so basic, but how do I stop certain applications starting automatically on startup?

sorry this is so basic but how do I stop certain applications starting automatically on startup?

Is this for a computer model or an iDevice model? If the former you've posted in the wrong forum. But here's the answer.
Open General preferences in System Preferences. There are two options you can check that affect this behavior:
Check the boxes you thing you prefer. When you next shutdown the computer you should be asked in a dialog about reopening applications on restart. Select the option to not reopen.

  • Why do certain applications open automatically

why do certain applications open automatically?

If you're using Lion, and the apps open automatically when you start up/log in, it's down to one of two things. Either
    a) you had the application open when you shut down last time, or
    b) you have that application set to open automatically.
If you don't want (a) happening, either quit the application completely before you shut down, or turn off all app resuming through System Preferences - General - untick "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps".
If the apps re-open even if you quit them before shutting down, check System Preferences - Accounts - Login Items. Delete any programs from the list that you don't want auto-launching when you log in.

  • How to stop browser and mail applications opening automatically at start up

Since upgrading to Lion, Firefox, Mail and Hogwasher (a newsreader application) all open automatically when the computer starts up. I don't want or need this to happen but cannot find any way of preventing it. I have checked my user login items, but none of these apps is among those listed. Any suggestions why this is happening and how I can change it?

Find your Firefox icon, and drag it to the Start menu, hold and pause, and when the menu appears, drag it up to All programs, hold and pause, and when the All programs list displays, drag it to the Startup folder, hold, and when the contents of that folder displays, drag it across and release.

  • Mail app opens automatically at startup

For the past few weeks, the apple Mail program has been opening automatically upon starting my computer or login. I've never set this as a preference and have not found anywhere to turn it off in either the Mail or system preferences. I have also checked startup items and it is not listed there, either. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but when Mail starts up automatically like this, sometimes the mailboxes seem to have problems loading and I have to restart the program to fix them. This automatic startup began spontaneously, so I'm assuming it's a result of a software update. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know how to turn the automatic startup feature off? Also, this has been happening ONLY on my 15" MacBook Pro and NOT my iMac 24", even though they both have OSX 10.5 Leopard. Thanks in advance for any help.

I have this exact same problem and have posted a thread with more details here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1891438&tstart=0
This is happening on my MacBook but not my desktop Mac Mini, just as in your situation, and I also have email reminders set up in iCal.
Hoping a Mac expert out there can help us!

  • Illustrator CC 2014 doesn't open automatically on startup when left open at shutdown. Can this be remedied?

All my other versions in the past, if left open at shutdown, were relaunched upon startup. Not CC2014. I am running Yosemite.

My Oracle services are started and the listener service is also started. The problem is iSQL *Plus Application server service "isqlplussvc.exe" couldnt start and it generates an error  "Error 1067 the process terminated unexpectedly" . The consequence of which i am not able to access my oracle service even tough it is started.

  • When application opens, automatically open another? Possible?

    Hi!
    Automator is great!
But is it possible to launch another different application when another is started - and this automatically? I mean I already have the script, it works but I always have to click RUN script. Is it somehow possible to open the other application autoatically when the other starts without pressing RUN script (that means without opening Automator).
    For example:
When my EyeTV software runs or starts up, my BOINC Manager starts parallel.
This would be very usefull, because EyeTV automatically starts my machine but it is only on for EyeTv. When it would automatically start up BOINC it would even work for a good thing while recording a TV program.
    Is this somehow possible?
    Thanks!!
    Greetings,
    Phillip

  • Page won't open automatically upon startup.

I used to be able to start up the computer and Safari would come up with my designated home page open. Now Safari comes up but I have to go to file - new window to see my homepage otherwise I have a blank screen with no page open. How can I have it automatically open the homepage? In preferences I have "Safari opens with - a new window" and "new windows open with - homepage". Could it have something to do with settings in Accounts? Although if that was the case then Safari wouldn't be open at all if it wasn't set right I assume.

Yes, I do have New Windows set to Open with the Home page.
    I mis-stated the issue a bit yesterday.
What actually appears to be happening is that Safari does open, but the window is hidden.
I also checked in System Preferences, Accounts, User Login, and Safari is there, but the Hide checkbox is not checked.
So Leopard appears to be ignoring the unchecked Hide checkbox and hides it anyway.
Any ideas how I get to pay attention to my Unhide request?

I've deleted Mail from the startup items list -- and it reappears there after restart!  No solutions posted.  Any ideas?

Make sure you have this turned off:

  • Applications launch automatically at startup

Microsoft Word recently started launching itself on startup, which isn't a problem particularly, just a bit annoying. I don't think it's a Microsoft thing because Mail went through a period of doing the same a few weeks back. I've checked the Startup Items folder, and there's nothing in it - does anyone have any suggestions for what else could be causing this to happen?
