Applications open but I can't use them

When I try to open an application, it shows up as opened on my iMac G5's dock. But when I click the app's picture on the dock, it flashes for a second, then disappears, so I can't use it. I have tried with many apps, like Address Book and AppleWorks. I have restarted my computer, and nothing has changed.
Could anyone tell me what has happened?

Hi jgreene
Sorry to read of your many problems. A few questions:
- did your iMac initially function properly, or has it always shown this behaviour?
- have you installed any third-party software?
- have you renamed any of the folders (especially your Home and Appplications folders)?
- have you moved any apps from the Applications folder?
- have you deleted anything other than your own data files/folders?
- have you made any other modifications not mentioned above?
- have you tried repairing the disk?
