There should really be a return to reference manuals, a pdf ebook though I suspect if you take all the support articles and Help menu you might come close.

  • Why does Chrome open when I switch my Mac on?

    Hi everyone I am a newbie Mac owner and loving it. I have Google Chrome installed on my Mac and have noticed recently that whenever I turn my Mac on Chrome automatically opens up. It never used to do that when I first installed it. I have made no changes in preferences and can't find anything in preferences to prevent this from happening. Does any one have any solutions please?

    Check the second box.
    Shutdown the computer. When this dialog appears uncheck the box.
    Open Users & Groups preferences in System Preferences. Click on the Login Items tab. Be sure Chrome is not in the list. If it is then select it and click on the Delete [-] button.

  • I'm new to Macbook Pro, and never imagined I would have problems saving bookmarks when I switched to Mac.  Any suggestions with this issue?  And has Apple come up with a permanent fix?

    I'm new to Macbook Pro, and never imagined I would have problems saving bookmarks when I switched to Mac.  Any suggestions with this issue?  I have Safari 6.0.4, and has Apple come up with a permanent fix?

    Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Show Info
    from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
    Does the dialog show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section?
    In the General section, is the box labeled Locked checked?
    What is the Modified date?
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

  • Software update says i have applications open when i don't

    Software updater tells me I have applications open when I don't.  Now I can't even shut down the installer. HELP!

    Didn't  the installer give you an opportunity to quit it when it gave you that message?
    What were you updating?
    You should be able to force quit the installer just like any other app but depending on what you were installing when it failed, and depending on where in the installation process it failed, you could leave your system in an inseminate state.  That may mean you mght not be able to reboot.

  • No application opens when I click on Mail application

    Nothing happens when I click on my Mail application. It jumps once in the doc but nothing opens. I verified permissions, I couldn't re-install from startup CD, so from my HD clicked on the CD, found applications, mail, and tried to re-install it twice but nothing.
    My Mail applications are still there, my mailboxes with messages are in the library, just nothing starts up.
    I had OS X installed 3 weeks ago, set up a .Mac mail account (looked at it but haven't used it) made an IMAP folder, worked fine, except for the Send Items folder, they didn't show up, I clicked accidentally to send the send items to 'Mail's' Send items folder (couldn't find how to put it back), it worked but a day or two later I couldn't open the mail application.
    Other than that I don't think I changed anything. I updated Java, a few times & my computer crashed a few times (probably giving too many commands or too fast)
    I don't have a problem in OS 9 with mail, it's not the server etc.
    I don't really want to reinstall everything since I've had much trouble installing on my external Hard Drive with my iMac DV G3 blue. And I updated everything, including from OS X 10.4.6 TIGER to OS 10.4.11
    Any suggestion how to get it back?
    Thanks, Nicky

    Hi again,
    My med news isn't good, more test need to be done. Keeping fingers crossed.
    For my mail application problem:
    I tried many things but no go, as suggested:
    * Deleted preferences file: /Users/nickyyes/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    * Reinstalled mail several times after verifying disk & Permissions. Even tried fixing permissions (had a fetchmail error) from CD, then from HD. No go.
    -The last log for installing says: Package Authoring Error: Package specified by <options mpkg='com.apple.mpkg.OptionalInstalls'/> not found.
    Then it goes on to install anyway and says:
    ./Applications/Mail.app (version 2.0.7.7460200) was not installed because a newer version (2.1.3.7530100) already exists.
    It end up going over files deleting obsolete files and installing 2.
    * I also got the black Darwin screen a couple of times.
    * Downloaded the combo: Here I ran into new trouble: Verification failed.
    I downloaded it so many times that I was over the limit but each time it said:
    WARNING: The following disk images failed to mount:
    image MacOSXupdCombo10.4.11PPC.dmg Reason: invalid checksum or codec something.
    After days of looking for answers I found out that Mac users who use a router have that problem with .dmg. Downloaded via my PC and transferred it to Mac. That worked! Did it a few times but no mail application opens.
    The only thing I can think off is to delete everything to do with mail, reinstall mail, verify permissions & disk and run the combo again.
    Losing messages is ok (IMAP) but can I do any harm if I delete all mail stuff below?
    *CAN I DELETE THESE* (found by finder)?
    'Mail' folder in:
    * /Applications/
    * /Library/
    * /users/nickyme/Library/
    Not sure if I should delete these:
    * /Library/Scripts/Mail Scripts
    * /Applications/Stuffit 10.0/Examples/Stuffit Express Examples/StuffIt X and Mail.app & Tar.gz and Mail.app
    This seems odd, delete?
    * /Applications/Adobe Acrobat 5.0/Plug-Ins/SendMail
    Don't know about these, delete them?:
    * /System/Library/PreferecePanes/ Accounts.prefPane
    * Mac.prefPane
    * /OSInstall.mkg.241KOK2es/Mail.installplan
    * /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Mail.crash.log
    * /Library/Receipts/Mail.pkg
    Then there are a bunch of mail related files in different applications but I haven't used any for sending mail, so I guess I can ignore them, right?
    * DreamWeaver - MS word, iBackup has a Mail.plist, etc.
    If it's ok to delete those and it doesn't work I think I need to start from 0 but that…I'll use my OS 9.2.2 mail for a while.
    Thanks,
    Nicky

  • Why do about 6 applications open when I turn on since Loin installed?

    After installing Lion, when I turn on my computer there are about 6 applications open onto the dest top - Why? Can someone please point me to where to make the necessary changes to stop it?

  • Leaving applications open when not in use

    This may be the world's dumbest computer question but what effect does it have on the OS to leave applications open on the dock when not in use? Any? Apps such as, e.g., Office 2008? Does it slow the OS to have apps open when not in use? Or perhaps no effect unless using them? Does it matter if Safari is left open after logging off a secure site?
    I've been compulsive about closing what's not in use but I just installed Office 2008 and Word and Excel, for example, are slow to open so I'd like to just always leave them open on the dock.
    Sorry if this is just too dumb. I searched but didn't find anyone else who had asked. Maybe everyone else knows.

  • Dreamweaver screen blank when I switch Spaces Mac

    Hi,
    I have a new macbook with cs3 web premium. I have dreamweaver
    in one space and photoshop in another space. When I switch from
    photoshop to dreamweaver, the file window is blank and I have to
    click in the file window to make the content appear. This happens
    whether I'm in code, design or both views. The expected behavior is
    that when you return to dreamweaver, the file screen I left will
    still be active and the cursor will still be active. I should have
    to click the file window to see the contents. Very annoying when
    you switch back and forth hundreds of times a day.
    Has anyone else experienced this and is there a way to
    correct it?
    Thanks

    AFAIK, Dreamweaver is not compatible with Spaces.

  • How do I turn off all the applications that open when I start my Mac up?

    Everytime I start my Macbook Pro up, it opens all of these applications up.  I know there is a way to turn it off, but I can't remember how.  Can anyone help, please?

    Launch System Preference.  Click General.
    Go to the section "Number of recent items".
    Uncheck the box preceding
    "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps".
    Restart.
    Hope this helps.

  • Itunes wont open when iphone connected to mac, please help?!

    i updated my iphone 4s and tried connecting it to my mac but itunes wont open at all, so i updated mac software as well as itunes, and itunes still won't open up when i connect my phone.
    P.S. iv'e already tried taking the USB cord out and plugging it back in twice already... still wont open.

    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
    from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
    Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take the action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
    The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
    Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Applications opening when turning on machine

    how do i stop my macbook automatically opening applications when turning on?

    I also had the same problem, and with some help from Apple Support, reset my settings in Safari Preferences to this. The important items are obviously the ones in the middle: "New windows open with... "
    This is a TERRIBLE feature of White Lion which will hopefully be removed in some future update...

  • Annoying application opening when renaming...

    There must be a way around this, but it escapes me hence this appeal for ideas....
    I am in the process of re-naming hundreds of photo' files and when I click on the file to rename it most of the time the file opens up an image application like Aperture, Photoshop and so on. I vary the "clicking" on the file name and sometimes that helps and the file will highlight and let me re-name it, but mostly the file opens up in an application, then I have to close it and keep trying until the old name is highlighted.
    Is there a key stroke that can prevent this happening, or is there a simple "file re-naming" command?
    Thanks!

    As Barney-15E says, select the file, and press the <Return> key.  After you have entered the new name, presss <Return> again to get out of rename mode.
    You can use the arrow keys or the tab key to move around, or type the first few letters of a file name to quickly move to the next file to rename, so you do not need to use the mouse/trackpad.
    When in rename mode, you can use the up arrow key to move to the beginning of the name, the down arrow key will move to the end of the name, and of course the left and right arrow keys will move letter to letter left or right.  Again, no need for the mouse/trackpad.
    Also as Barney-15E says, you might also want to check your System Preferences -> Mouse settings to see if maybe they are a little too sensitive.  If you like them as sensitive as they currently are, you could adjust them for the rename sessions, and then restore them back after you are finished doing your rename activities.
    Finally, there are utilities available that will do bulk renaming of files, especially picture images.  Search the App Store file "rename" and some will appear.

  • Turn off applications opening when restarting computer

    I hate in Lion how when I restart my computer, all of the applications I had open before reopen. Can I turn that off? It takes start up forever. I've seen how to uncheck "Restore windows when quitting and reopening apps" and I've uncheck that, but it doesn't work for this case. I just want to start up like normal and I pick the apps I want to open at the time.
    What do I need to do?

    First, the best thing to do is to make sure that you quit applications before shutting down; also, check in your Users & Groups Pane in System Prefeences to see what if anything you have in Login items. If you don't want it to open, delete it from there.
    Thirdly, if you want to turn off any chance that any apps will open, you can do the following; please note that this is system wide, so don't do it unless you don't want anything to open:
    Go to your User's Library (now hidden) by pressing the Option key and going to Go in Finder menu. Scroll down to Library and open it. Scroll down to Saved Application State folder. Open that folder and delete every entry. Then hightlight the folder icon and press these keys: Command and I. In the resulting window, scroll down and unlock the lock and enter your password. Scroll up and tick the "locked" option. Then lock the lock by clicking it. Done.

  • None of my Applications transferred when Backed up my Mac for a Clean Install

    I recently copied all of my important folders & files to an external drive -- everything under my user file.  My documents, Music, Photos, etc. all backed up correctly.  So I clean-installed mavericks.
    Today I opened up my applications folder to get MS Office back, and the only thing in my applications folder is a folder named "Akami."  That's it.  My Microsoft Office Suite--powerpoint, word, excel--photoshop, dreamweaver, and MORE are all gone, and the only place I had them was on my mac.
    First, why didn't they back up like everthing else did.  Second, if I formatted my drive, is there ANY WAY to get these back?  And no, I didn't time machine or anything else because I thought they were on my drive.
    Thanks.

    It didn't back up your applications because you backed up "everything under your user file". Applications for all users aren't in the Home directory, they're in the root of the hard drive. What you should have done was to clone your entire drive to an external.
    If you had just formatted your drive and hadn't done anything else to it, you might get them back. But it sounds like you've already reinstalled OS X, so any chance of getting things back is extremely slim.
    Sorry.
