Applications opening slowly

Upgraded last night.  After restart opening any application took a long time to open if at all.  This morning functioning a little better but still very slow to launch an application.  Also noticed that files on the desktop are not displaying as they did before.  PDF's are not viewing with the first page of the document as they did in Mavericks.  Wondering if I should try to re-install or see if I can restore to Mavericks.  Not even sure I can.  I have  a MacBook7,  2 GB of RAM. Got it in 2010.  Not sure if I should add more RAM or not.  I can only upgrade to 4GB.  But is that my problem or is it something else?  Anyone have any idea?
Diane

A few tips you can try:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh17.html
You can also boot from an installer disk, and run diskutility to repair the HD.
This article refers to starup troubles, but can also be used for other issues as well

If none of this helps, post back for other ideas.

  • Why do my applications open slowly?

    Hello,
I have a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.7.5.  The computer is a little over three years old, and I've noticed lately that applications are pretty slow to open. Are there are routine maintenance tasks I should be performing to keep my Mac running smoothly?

    Hello gargoyle09
Check out the articles below, the issue could be related to how much space you have left on your hard drive or if you have to many apps opened at the same time and using up a lot of memory causing other apps to load up slowly.

  • Applications load slowly on imac after Mavericks clean install

After a clean install of Mavericks, my late 2009 imac runs more slowly compared to how it ran under Snow Leopard.  Applications like "Settings" take a few seconds to load, whereas under snow leopard, the application would load almost instantly.  The Novabench score now is around 771, and matches about what I measured after the clean Mavericks install, but appears low compared to scores for similarly configured systems running Snow Leopard.  The system is quite usable, especially if applications are left open, just slower.  Is it possible to identify from Etrecheck a possible explanation?  Is this level of degradation of performance expected when upgrading an old system?  Thank you for your help.

Actually it isn't Alt-Tab on OS X, it's Command-Tab to use the Application Switcher.
Also, Control+ left/right arrow key will switch spaces if that's what's desired.

  • How do you make an application open on a specific monitor?

How do you make an application open on a specific monitor? I have two monitors, and I was able to get Firefox to open on the secondary display always by resizing it with the option or command key [I forget which one] and then quitting it. Now everytime I start it, it opens on the second monitor.
However, when I try to do the same with QuickTime [when playing videos], it always opens on the primary display no matter what I do with it. How do I make it always open on the secondary display?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks for the suggestion, but no, Spaces is not what I want. I have two physical monitors, and simply want an application to always open on one monitor, not be able to switch back and forth between different desktops.

  • How do I prevent multiple applications opening on start up with Lion?

how do I prevent multiple applications opening on start up with Lion?

It's the Resume feature of Lion:
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.

  • How to keep multiple applications open in one screen?

I'd like to have several applications open at the same time, for example iTunes, Safari and Mail. But when I start a new program the one I was working in disappears from the screen.... How can I keep them resized on the screen....? Thanks for your help...

When you start a new program, do the others disappear into the background (i.e. minimize)
If so, you have somehow gotten the system into Single-app mode. This reacts as if you held down the option key when starting the new app.
You can check to see what is set with this commanddefaults read com.apple.dock single-appIf you get "The domain/default pair of (com.apple.dock, single-app) does not exist" then something else is wrong, but I don't know what it is.
If you get a 1 returned (or yes or true), then you can disable it with this:defaults delete com.apple.dock single-app
    or
    defaults write com.apple.dock single-app 0

How to enable private mode from commandline, with an URL.
I am a software dev and I wish to have my application open links in Firefox.
Using ShellExecute(), i can do with with commandlines like:
    firefox.exe http://support.mozilla.org
But I also want the option to open the link in private mode.
I am able to start firefox in private mode by doing this:
    firefox.exe -private
However, if I add a link to the command line
    firefox.exe -private http://support.mozilla.org
    I get strange results.
If firefox is not running, it launches 2 copies of the application.
One that opens in private mode and the other opens in normal mode and goes to the URL specified.
If firefox is already running, it just opens the URL in a new tab.
No private mode instance is launched.
Am I using the command-line syntax incorrectly?

It will never work if Firefox is already running as Firefox will use the already opened Firefox instance.<br />
In that case only using a separate profile will work.
You can try to specify the -url switch as well.
    *firefox.exe -private -url http://support.mozilla<i></i>.org
You can also look at the -new-tab switch.
    *firefox.exe -private -new-tab http://support.mozilla<i></i>.org

  • WebDynpro ABAP application opening blank in portal

    Dear All,
There is a strange issue which is being faced by one user. when the user tries to access a Webdynpro ABAP application in Portal then it opens in new window but nothing is displayed in the tray. Now when the user right clicks on the opened window->properties and copies the url from properties and pastes it in new tab (IE 8 is used) then the application opens and works fine.
The portal and backend roles are fine for the user as he can access/work when the application is opened using the copied url.
Please suggest what could be the problem for the user. For other users the issue mentioned is not there.

  • MBP 13" 2.26 High Idling Temperature with no applications open

    Hi,
Basically my MBP is idling at above 60 celcius with no applications open. It is used on a desk all the time and is currently charging. With minimal load open it often raises to 90C + which leads me to believe that the thermal paste needs to be replaced.
Just wanted to know if my assumptions were correct and whether I will be able to get it fixed with Apple Care if this is the case?
    Thanks for your help !

    CT wrote:
The 60 C at idle doesn't sound too unusual. The 90 C might be high depending what the "minimal load" means. For example, just using Safari, graphic/flash stuff can get the temperature up there.
Maybe it's just me, but my machine seems to average up to 10 C hotter since I upgraded to 10.6.3 from 10.6.2. I've watched Activity Monitor to see if somebody is working the CPU, but nothing seems significant...

60°C is way too high when idling.
Your cpu should stay 15°C lower than that (mine stays between 38-45°C, with Safari and Mail opened).

  • Why do certain applications open automatically

why do certain applications open automatically?

If you're using Lion, and the apps open automatically when you start up/log in, it's down to one of two things. Either
    a) you had the application open when you shut down last time, or
    b) you have that application set to open automatically.
If you don't want (a) happening, either quit the application completely before you shut down, or turn off all app resuming through System Preferences - General - untick "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps".
If the apps re-open even if you quit them before shutting down, check System Preferences - Accounts - Login Items. Delete any programs from the list that you don't want auto-launching when you log in.
