Applications quit unexpectedly after installation of Snow Leopard

Hello,
I just recently purchased snow leopard and put it on my macbook which is currently operating tiger. It was purchased in 2006 and has a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The installation was successful, but once the computer restarted a message came up saying "the application quit unexpectedly." After hitting reopen 58904 times and it still not working, I decided to try and open safari. Once again I got the same message saying " the application quit unexpectedly." This went on with multiple other applications. Finally i decided to just downgrade back to tiger. I would really love to get my moneys worth on this Snow Leopard purchase. Can someone please help me understand what might have happened?

I am not sure what you mean by haxie programs from unsanity. I also did not try to make a different user account. What do you recommend?
There were some popular programs from a company named Unsanity that were written outside of Apple's programming guidelines. They took advantage of undocumented features in earlier versions of OSX (that's why they are called 'haxies'). Unfortunately, they've been a real problem for upgraders. They are not compatible with 10.6 (they weren't compatible with 10.5 when it came out, but some have been updated), and can cause many problems including some users not being able to boot at all after installing 10.6 - Make sure you are not using any of their products on your Tiger installation: http://unsanity.com/products/
Meanwhile, it's a good idea to do a little housekeeping before you upgrade to a different OS, especially when you jump a couple versions. I would use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions on the drive and use a program like SuperDuper to make a bootable clone of your existing OS to an external drive. I'd also be tempted to run a cache cleaning and general maintenance program like Onyx for Tiger: http://pagesperso-orange.fr/joel.barriere/dl/104/OnyX.dmg , or CocktailTE: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10385789 - You will need newer versions of these programs if you want to run them after upgrading to Snow Leopard.
You really should have 2GB or more Ram for Snow Leopard so that it will be able to run at it's best, and your hard drive needs more space during the installation that when it's completed. How much space is left on your drive?
You should probably take a look at these tips by those who have gone before you so that you'll understand what's happening and what to anticipate: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2202296
After installing SL, I'd download and use the 10.6.2 Combo Update as it seems to do a better job than Software Update for this purpose: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 - You can download it any time and keep it on hand on the drive you are updating if you want.
With a few precautions like a bootable clone, and the ram, and the drive space, you should be able to run SL pretty well.
After installing the 10.6.2 update, I'd use Disk Utility to Repair your Permissions again, and then run Software Update to get all the updates for your Apple programs.
Be prepared for the new installation to act a little sluggish for an hour or so after you boot to 10.6 the first time. Spotlight will be working pretty hard to index your drive's files. This is normal and will settle down after a couple of hours and a couple of restarts, with new system cache files in place.
Hope this helps.

  • Everything is quitting unexpectedly after installation of snow leopard 10.6

I'm using a Mac mini with processor 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and Memory of  1GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
Whatever application I opened, it will quit unexpectedly, including the software updater.
Another question is what if I wanted to update my Mac mini using the update combo 10.6.8, will that solve my problem???

It may well.   What was the OS your mini was supplied with?   If you have bought a disk to upgrade to 10.6 it would only have been supplied with 10.6.3.   You would not, for example, have App Store and It would need updating to 10.6.8.   What does 'About this Mac' say you have?

  • Compressor 3.5 (FCS) Quits Unexpectedly at startup under Snow Leopard...

Compressor 3.5 (FCS) quits unexpectedly at startup under Snow Leopard... After a clean install of Snow Leopard and installing the new Final Cut Studio, all apps work fine except Compressor 3.5. It just won't boot. I just get a "Compressor quit unexpectedly" message.
Anybody else seeing this and is there a fix?

That was weird. It fixed it's self.

Hi kenneth, it sounds as if you have an issue with a problematic Apple "Framework" file.
Try downloading the "Combo" update of OSX 10.6.2 from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 (it is a big download, I'm afraid) and installing it over the top of your current installation.
    Cheers

  • Application quit unexpectedly after upgrade to Mountain Lion.

Hi, Please help. after upgrade to Mountain Lion 10.8.1 my iPhoto keeps quitting unexpectedly, then after upgrading to 10.8.2 yesterday, now almost most of my application which I used todays quits unexpectedly, this includes my broadband connection. I plan to fallback to Lion, but paying $20 for OS that causing me so many problem is not worth it. Anyone can help me to resolved this? Thanks in advance..

Have you tried booting into the Mountain Lion Recovery Partition by booting while simultaneously holding down the Command - R keys?  You can repair the main Mountain Lion partition disk from there by using "Disk Utility" from THAT location.  Select the Macintosh HD in the column by highlighting it and selecting "Repair Disk".  Then I would run "Repair Permissions" twice.  That may solve your problems.
    Hope this helps

  • Time capsule stuck in endless loop after installation of Snow Leopard

I've done an upgrade to Snow Leopard on my Unibody Macbook.
Then when I started Time Machine for the first time, it asked me if I wanted to use my existing backup file or make a new one. I went for the existing backup file and it gave me a warning that I wouldn't be able to use it on my old machine anymore. I went for it.
Then I let it go for something like 15 hours, but it would always get to a certain percentage at "Calculating Changes", but never complete the actual backup. It would somehow restart after a while and start again from the beginning.
I tried this both wired and wirelessly. Also, I do not have access to my old backups in Time Machine. I just see "today".
I've looked in Console and filtered the syslog for "backupd". This clearly shows that it stops and starts several times. Problem is that I don't understand why this happens and how to solve it.
If anyone can shine a light on this, that would be great. Below are a few hours worth of logfile.
    Kind regards,
    Bastian

Thank you for your feedback. I tried repairing in Disk Utility, but it didn't find any problems.
I think it may have to do with some of the things mentioned in this article about new hardware and time machine backups: http://www.tuaw.com/2009/07/20/mac-301-time-machine-backups-after-your-macs-brai n-surgery/
Reason is that I changed my Macbook Pro for a new model Unibody one at the same time I upgraded to snow Leopard.
How did you get the data, etc., from the old Mac to the new one?
Not sure if these instructions play nice with Snow Leopard, and frankly I'm a bit amazed this doesn't work smoothly out of the box. People must upgrade their machines all the time, and its only logical you'll want to pick up from your last backup.
If someone who understands about these things tells me there's a good chance that I'll get things working if I'll follow the instructions in the article, I'll give it a go.
No. Those instructions are for a *completely different* problem: if you have the Logic board replaced. Because the hardware on the Logic board contains your Mac's "Ethernet Address," which TM uses to keep one Mac's backups separate from another's, TM starts a whole new "sequence" of backups. It does not cause what you're seeing.
Since +*Repair Disk+* didn't find any directory problems, the corruption must be within the backup structure itself -- the multi-links that TM uses. That means your best bet is to erase the disk completely and let TM start fresh, as in my last post.
Have you ever moved, change, or deleted anything in your backups via the Finder?

  • USB quit working after upgrade to snow leopard

I went from Tiger 10.4.11 to snow leopard today. The install went perfect, but neither USB drive will work now. They both worked fine last week when I backed up everything to an external via USB. Any ideas on how to fix?? Thanks Kelly

Power down the ext HDs, unplug them, Zap the Pram, hook up the ext HDs, and power them up. Also, ensure that Finder->Preferences->General is set to display ext HDs.

  • All applications quit unexpectedly after choosing page/print setup

i recently installed HP photosmart c6180 All-in-one printer. not working properly. now all applications that have print options dont function when choosing page setup or print. can anyone pls help me. i have installed and uninstalled a few times

Here's several things you could try.
    1. Open the Printer Setup Utility (Applications > Utilities), delete the driver again and then click on Printer Setup Utility and select Reset Printing System. Restart the Mac and then add the printer again.
    2. Downloading and installing the 10.4.10 Combo update for the type of Mac you have (ie. PPC or Intel)
    3. Opening Disk Utility and running Repair Disk Permissions
    4. Using Fixamac's Printer Setup Repair utility to see if it can determine what is wrong with the printing system.

  • Mail "unexpectedly quits" after migration from snow leopard to new iMac running Mountain Lion

Mail "unexpectedly quits" after migration from snow leopard time machine files to new iMac running Mountain Lion.  I can run connection doctor OK.  But the activity window is blank.   If you try to open message viewer window then mail program crashes.  Would really like to get my old emails back as the old imac is totally dead.  Thanks for any help.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • After upgrade from snow leopard to lion, where is application front row?

After upgrade from snow leopard to lion, where is application front row? i realize it when to use my remote. any one knows about this matter?

    OK - Fixed it.
Turns out the cure is to use the Webcal Interface to re-create the delegations.  A bit tedious, but doing this presumably forces a rewrite of the file that previously cannot be accessed.  Means you need to set up the delegation again for each account - but this at least is an improvement over not being able to do anything at all.
Once fixed, delegation works just fine.
Hope this helps someone else solve the issue etc.

  • Application quits unexpectedly

    Hey everyone,
I have a really annoying problem that I think is connected to Snow Leopard, but I'm sure a large part of it is my own stupidity.
Back in May, I downloaded a copy of Dinertown Tycoon (I know-shutup) and I played it until I only had 2 minutes left of free time, and then forgot about it. Recently I installed Snow Leopard.
The other day I found it again, and finished playing the last two minutes. Then I went to BigFishGames to buy the game. I bought it, they emailed me a license key, but it didn't work. So, with my keen powers of deduction, I realized that I had probably downloaded the game from Macgamestore.com and not BigFishGames. So I removed the existing game, and downloaded it new from BigFishGames. Then, I tried to open it, and it didn't work.
The icon will bounce a few times in the dock, then an error message comes up, saying the application quit unexpectedly. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, redownloaded etc several times. The BigFishGames people were completely unhelpful in their response. Here's the "details" part of the error message--it's long, but I have no clue which part of it might be helpful.

I didn't see any obvious "smoking gun" in that dump. Have the BigFishGames assured you they've tested that game throughly with 10.6 and that it's compatible?

  • GCC Elite 21n+ Printer Stop working after Upgrade to Snow Leopard

GCC Elite 21n+ B&W Laser Printer no longer works after upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6.2.
A back-up HP 2015DN Printer works intermittently. It will not work with ethernet cable connected to Net Gear Ethernet Hub (model FS105). But will work most of the time when ethernet cable is connected directly to back of computer.
Back to GCC printer. Just cannot get it to work.
But I cannot figure out what the IP address is for the GCC printer. Tried 192.168.1.4:9300
See post (discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10127869). Still did not work.
GCC tech have this work around. Here is what I received from GCC via email.

+Since Apple has made the decision to eliminate Appletalk from it's Operating System, you are now forced to set the printer up over TCP/IP. Please keep in mind that GCC has never provided drivers for the Mac. We use the Apple Built in Print Driver. We do provide an OS X PPD Installer located on our website that I recommend you download, unstuff, install, reboot your Mac, then add the printer. You can find the Installer at http://www.gccprinters.com/support/doc/ Click on the Model of your printer and download the OS X Installer. DO NOT download the Applications Folder.+
+You will need to set the printer up over TCP/IP, which means you will need to pull the IP Address of the printer from the Printers Configuration Page. Once you've done that, please do the following:+
+You can add the printer over IP, that should work fine. Here are some steps for you to take.+
+1) Select 'System Preferences...' (4th item) from the 'Apple' menu. The 'System Preference' panel will appear as a new window.+
+2) Click on 'Print & Fax' icon (second row 'Hardware', second icon from right side). The 'System Preferences' panel will change into the 'Print & Fax' panel without opening a new window.+
+3) Click on the '+' button to add a printer (2/3 the way down on the left side on the 'Print & Fax' panel). The 'Add Printer' dialog will open in a new window.+
+4) Select the 'IP' icon in the top row of the 'Add Printer' dialog.+
+5) Next to 'Protocol' select LPD Line Printer Daemon.+
+6) Next to 'Address' type in the IP address you assigned to the printer. The Mac should prompt "complete and valid address".+
+7) (Optionally) Next to 'Name' set the name of the printer to something friendlier. Normally it defaults to the IP address enter in the previous step. The 'Name' is what the printer is called in the print dialog.+
+8) (Optionally) Next to 'Print Using' change/verify the PPD.+
+9) Click 'Add' in the bottom right corner. After a few moments the 'Add Printer' dialog will close.+
+10) The printer added in the previous step will appear in the list on the left side of the 'Print & Fax' panel. Click on the close box in the left-top of the 'Print & Fax' panel.+
+11) Done. You should be ready to print.+
Still cannot get the GCC printer to work or discover its IP address. Printer's Configuration page says
TCP/IP: Enabled IP address: Unknown subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
When I download the Drivers from GCC Web Site I only get a Text Document with loads of meaningless
gibberish. There is nothing to unstuff and install.
All worked well with OS 10.5.
    Thanks for shedding any light.
    John L.
    Thanks,
    John

    Hello John,
At this stage you will not be able to get this to print until the printer has a valid IP address. According to your post, the IP address setting is enabled but the actual IP address is unknown. This is most likely a result of the GCC being set to DHCP but if there is no DHCP server or router capable of assigning the printer an IP address, then it will not get a valid address.
So, the first thing I recommend is you check the documentation for manually setting an IP address into the printer. This address needs to be in the same subnet as your Mac. If you check System Preferences > Network on the Mac, you will see your IP address and subnet mask. If the subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0, then you subnet will be the first three sets of numbers. For example, a device with an IP address of 192.168.1.12 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 has a subnet of 19.2.168.1 and a network address of 12. Ideally, so that other devices can communicate with this device, they also need a subnet of 192.168.1 but a different network address, any number between 1 and 250 but one that is not already being used by another device, such as 12 in this example.
Once you have the IP address set in the printer, then you add the printer as the GCC tech stated, using IP > LPD for the protocol. Note that you will only need to enter the IP address, such as 192.168.1.4 as per your post example. Don't enter any other numbers, such as the 9300 port reference you have tried already the colon after the IP address followed by the 9300).
For the Print Using, you can use Generic PostScript to begin with as a test. If you then wanted to use the GCC PPD, then the link is okay. When you select the 21+n the next page shows the 21+ installer for OS 9 and OS X. This is a stuffit packed file so you will need some form of Stuffit (Stuffit Expander is a free download) to unpack the file first. Once unpacked, there is most likely an installer that you run. This will copy the PPD files for the printer to the appropriate folder.
Hope this helps. Please reply if you require more help.

The general approach at this time is to ask if you've checked for any problematic fonts (all languages) with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Find and remove all duplicates also.
SL may have taken the initiative and quarantined what it determined were borked fonts and put them aside to avoid calamity.
Also, don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from Office 2008, including those related to an Equation Editor installation.
That said, rumor has it that the next update will correct some spurious font handling....best to wait if housecleaning doesn't help at this time.

  • Wireless network connectivity issues after upgrading to Snow Leopard

After upgrading to Snow Leopard (10.6.4) I find that my wireless network will not automatically connect to my router (Netgear DG834G) as it used to. First impressions are that the macbook is finding a number of wireless networks but wants to connect to the one that is alphabetically first in the list. It also seems that the signal that the airport is receiving is weak, even when the macbook is next to the router.
Has anyone experienced this when they upgraded?
Any and all help gratefully appreciated
    Nick

but a couple that I used with no problem before I upgraded now give me a "server not found" error after I enter my login and password.
Quit Safari. Open Keychain Access   /Applications/Utilities. Select Passwords on the left.
Delete the keychains for the sites you have problems logging into AND the Safari Forms Autofill keychain. Now from the menu bar click Keychain Access / Keychain First Aid. Select: Verify. If necessary, select: Repair. You will be prompted for your admin password. Click Start.
Relaunch Safari. Navigate to a site. Login with your user name and password. That will create a new keychain for you.
If you still have problems accessing sites, go to Safari / Preferences then select the Security tab. Click: Show Cookies. Delete all cookies or just the one's for the problematic sites. Now try logging into a site again.
Even though you upgraded to v10.6.7 make sure Safari is up to date. From the menu bar click Safari / About Safari. If it's a version prior to 5.0.5, click your Apple menu (top left in your screen) then click: Software Update...
And check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. Something there may be preventing you from accessing secure sites. If you have any extensions installed,  turn that off, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
