Applications quit when screen saver is running

Hi Forum Members - Recently, I have to reformat and reinstall my entire PowerBook drive using Tiger 10.4.4 and experiencing that applications quit each time when the screen saver is being activated. This was not the case previously. I scanned through each functions within System Preference and could not find how I can preserve opened applications upon returning from sleep mode. I reckon that I am missing something but not able to identify what needs to be set correctly. I certainly need your expert tips to resolve this annoyance. Thanks in advance.

I have begun to experience the same problem on an iMac G5 running 10.4.5. About 50% of the time all applications will have quit upon returning from sleep mode. This computer was recently purchased and the files from a PowerMac Quicksilver G4 were transferred to it. This problem has not appeared on the Quicksilver.

Ok, I had the same problem. I'm new to Mac, only had my machine for 5 days, but i managed to fix it.
I used spotlight to locate 'itunes artwork screensaver', i got two hits... Therein lies the problem, the two files conflicted and made the systempreferences crash.
The solution is simple delete one of the two files and your itunes artwork screensaver will be back to normal. Be sure to open the files first and check the screensaver settings, (you should see the amount of rows, duration etc.) delete the file which has te settings that differ the most from the 'default' settings (when you first used the screenaver) and your problem should be solved.
    Hope this will help...

  • Applications Quit when trying to print on HP LaserJet 3055 All-in-one

Just upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.11 and my applications quit when I try to print on my HP printer which is on a local network. (I can't scan either) I can still print on my USB Epson printer. I have uninstalled and installed the printer software. Everything worked fine on 10.3. I have repaired permissions. What should I do next?

    Hi Bossless,
Have you checked for the latest drivers on HP's site, their CDs generally come with outdated Drivers, and complicated by the fact that an early 10.4 Driver may not work with 10.4.11
Many hp Drivers need to be uninstalled by hand before installing a newer version, look for directions on the net for that.

  • Activate application when screen saver active or display asleep

I cannot activate an application when the screen saver is active nor when the display is asleep.
    Neither
    tell application "Safari" to activate
    nor
do shell script "open -a Safari"
work or log errors when run as part of a GUI script.
Does anyone know the reason or a workaround?

    I also tried
tell application "System Events" to tell process "Safari" to set frontmost to true
to no avail. I'm out of ideas, for now.
So, GUI scripting doesn't work if you schedule a script to run without the application being frontmost when the screen saver executes or the display sleeps?

  • Monitor flickers when screen saver runs

I have a two monitor setup.  I just put in a replacement video card which has one ADC port and one DVI port.  The monitor on the ADC port flickers when the screen saver runs.  But it doesn't seem to flicker at any other time.  The monitor on the DVI port has no problems.
I wonder if there's anything I can do to get rid of the flicker.  Could it be the card, which otherwise seems to work fine?  Or could it be a memory problems?
    Any thoughts appreciated!

I wonder if it is the screen saver. Some really put the 3D graphics hardware to task. Have you tried switching to a screensaver that doesn't demand serious hardware acceleration like "Computer Name" or one of the "canned" savers that display picts like Cosmos, Beach, Paper Shadows, etc?
I keep two different types of temp monitoring on my Macs so see what programs task the system, One is software and the other is a direct-read remote thermometer (remote sensor tucked in the exhaust port of my Intel iMac). When I run the 3D savers, I can see the temps start to go up.

  • System Preferences crashing when Screen Saver window opens

I have been having a bit of a problem for some time now (a couple weeks).
One day, I noticed my screensaver was gone, and it turned into just the name of my hard drive and the Apple symbol moving periodically on a black background. So, I tried to open the screen saver options to change it, but when I open the Screen Saver tab, the list shows up briefly with nothing on it, then it crashes. I get this error message:
The application System Preferences quit unexpectedly. The problem may have been caused by the FlashPlayer- 10.4-10.5 plug-in.
I have re-installed Flash, but it hasn't helped. Any help on this issue would be outstanding! Thanks

Has anyone found the answer to this problem? I have installed and uninstalled flash player several times but whenever it instals my sytems preferences die, which is very frustrating. I receive the same message as Lazula.

  • Why does my Mac Pro now crash when screen saver starts?

I've upgraded my Mac Pro Mid 2010 (5,1) from 10.8.5 to 10.9.3 and I have a problem.  When I use one of the screen savers without a photo, the screen saver works fine.  But when I try to point it to one of my existing photos on the machine, it hangs when the screen saver kicks in and I have to force quit to get it running again.
I believe this must have to do with some permissions issues with where my image files are, but am not sure how to fix it.
    Anybody else have this problem?
    Thanks....

But does it then come fully awake? My MB Pro comes on with out of focus screen as if in a fog but once it comes awake it clears up, there is a progress bar at the bottom showing the progress from sleep

  • Applications quit when attaching/uploading files

facebood quits when uploading image. email program quits when attaching files (images, pdf, text files...). dreamweaver quits when making live links, pointing to file in directory. How should I fix it?Ti

Hi Hanuszka, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...

Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • Laptop freezing when screen saver

Hi and thanks in advance for your time.
My laptop is freezing soon after the screen saver starts. In short, the sxreen saver continues but the mouse doesn't respond. I have no option but to force it to turn off using the turn on/off bottom.
I ran techtool pro and fixed permissions and rebuilt. Did not run disk warrior yet, waiting for update to arrive...
    Any ideas, any advise, thanks

If it's one of Apple's preinstalled or a 3rd party screensaver, check to see if there is a plist file inside the ~/Library/Preferences folder and trash it. Restart your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run *Repair Disk* from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.

  • How do I turn off screen saver whilst running time machine backup?

My hard drive failed today when my MacBook Pro took a tumble from the sofa.
I have replaced it and am trying to restore from a time machine backup.
I have to use the snow leopard installation disc that came with the machine, once I get into disk utility I can format the new drive and select restore from time machine backup.
This all runs great until the screen saver kicks in, normally around 1% into the restore. This crashes the restore and gives me the grey screen of death, it's done it four times now.
Is there anyway to disable the screensaver? Or will I need to install snow leopard first and then software update and then restore from backup once I can turn off the screen saver in system properties.
I paid a lot of money for the time capsule and having these issues the first time I truly need it is disconcerting.

    Hi Mewnor,
Is there anyway to disable the screensaver?
This might help you if your computer is running Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.3). I can not help you if your computer is running Snow Leopard.

  • Any application quits when I try to print from it

It doesnt matter which application I am in, Text Edit, Safari, or Word, they all quit when I try to access the print menu. I am using a HP 648C ink jet printer on a powermac G4. When I hook up the printer to my ibook, it works flawlessly. I've updated the drivers on the powermac but still doesn't work. I think it has something to do with the OS itself. On both machines im running OS X.4. Any ideas?

    Hi, there all.
I have similar problem, occured after installing latest updates for Tiger.
Any application will crash without error messages (nor log) when i select print.
The print dialog does not show up! immidiate crash.
So far done the following without solution.
    Repaired permissions.
Resetted the Print center, removed all printers.
    Rebooted.
Tried to add LPR printer again, not possible, i can type in the IP address and then im unable to select printer model (the sun is rolling on the left side seeking something? ).
I can add Appletalk printer ok, it will show on the printers.
Still cant print even with appletalk, selecting print on any application will crash the app i tried print from.
FYI: all printers are network printers Appletalk & IP(lpr).
    Any help? please, urgent!

  • Cannot see the application window when the program is run

I wrote a java GUI using Jbuilder. I cant see the application window when i run the program. THe program compiles successfully but the application window pops up only showing the blue title bar and minimize maximaize and x out icon on it. I done see my GUI or anything below the 1 inch long blue title bar. Can someone plese tell me what i am doing wrong. Thanks.

A quick look-up in the API confirms that pack is not deprecated. Setting the size of the window to a specific size is quite a bit different than what pack accomplishes. Pack determines the preferred size of all of the components, lays out the layout manager and then sets the size of the window based on the size of the components inside of it. Calling setSize, however, will force the window to be a specific size no matter what the components want and thus creates a window that is probably not the right size for the components inside of it.
