Applications randomly dissapearing
Hello all,
The other day, I noticed that my Crashplan application had dissapeared (not just from the dock, but also from the applications folder).
I put this down to an error on my part, and I must have accidentally deleted it.
This morning, three more applications have dissapeared without trace (not in trash can). Adobe reader, Eye-Fi Helper and Express Accounts.
Does anyone have any ideas?
I've got a 27" iMac (late 2012) running the latest version of OSX (i'm at work, so I can't check the version, but I know it's up-to-date).
The only software I use that I can possibly think could be causing problems (although there's no indication its these) is:
Parallels Desktop 8 (in isolated mode from Mac)
Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac
Any assitance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I've got a time machine backup on a NAS, I hope to be able to look back through it tonight and see what time it dissapeared.
Hi a brody,
I haven't ever used an anti-virus on a mac before a couple of months ago, I might try removing it as you suggest. I don't have any drives shared over parallels, so I'm thinking that should be safe? (I've obviously got a virus checker running within the Win8 VM).
I'm interested in the Spotlight comment, please can you expand on what this could be doing to the apps?
Thank you for your help,
Ross

Itunes sound randomly dissapears (windows)
Hi, After checking everywhere, I haven't been able to find a solution for this.
When using iTunes 11 with Airplay (even if playing to multiple speakers, ie. to my computer and Airplay speakers), the sound "randomly" dissapears (Windows)
Description of the issue:
1. Using iTunes 11 with Airplay (even if playing to multiple speakers, ie. to my computer + Airplay speakers).
2. When itunes finishes a song, RANDOMLY, as it should start playing the next one,
2.1 The next song's is not played ... (sound dissapears from all the speakers, including my computer speakers)
2.1. In the screen guider the songs keeps "playing"
3. If I press the "PAUSE" button in iTunes and after a few seconds press "PLAY", the song restarts playing ... INCLUDING SOUND !
4. This issue ONLY HAPPENS when using Airplay (if only using my computer speakers, it doesn't happen).
HELP!!!!!!!
(I have tried everything: Updating sound drivers, reinstalling Quicktime and iTunes, deactivating sound enhancements in Windows and itunes, deactivating ipv6 in my network card - which fixed Airplay, ...)

I prefer iTunes and purchase loads of Tracks, I'm no newbie, but peed off with sound cutting out.
Resorted to playing my back catalogue through Media Player 9 - without a problem.
Why does my sound keep cutting out ?????
If you purchase a track and find it is defective, the music retailer will give you a replacement or refund. They are unlikely however, to just reimburse you for all your past purchases.
If one online music download store is not meeting your needs, try another. There are many. Ditto for players and programs. -
ADF application randomly refreshes using Active Event
we have a strange bug using the ActiveDataModel classes and events:
we have a landing page where we initiate the connection to the database and everything works fine on this front.
The problem occurs whern we change page; after about 5 seconds, we see the weblogic connection status turn red (which when hovering over with the mouse tells me it is 'Reconnecting' )and the page gets refreshed.
The connection status icon we are using is this:
+<af:statusIndicator id="pageLoadingIndicator"/>+
we get a new _afrLoop id also.
We are thinking the browser is refreshing because it loses the connection to the ActiveDataEvent but we are unsure how to 'gracefully' unregister it so we dont get random refreshes throughout the remaining application pages.
Is there a best practice method of doing this?
Regards
Jasonfurthermore,
from our investigations, if we comment out the following line, we do not experience the refreshing issues:
context.addActiveModelInfo(this, keyPath, "activemessage");
of course, this stops the Active data service running to our main landing page -
Applications randomly crash on macbook pro
I noticed the problem first in Safari/Chrome with tabs crashing randomly and more frequently.
I have now the same issue with other applications such as Adobe Light Room.
OS X, Safari, LR are updated to latest version.
Any help would be great!

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

OS lion crashes all applications randomly.
Hi - i'm at my wits end regards this problem. my macbook pro 17' intel core 2 duo was recently updated to lion os (a clean install - no old file brought over e.t.c) with any operating system updates as they became availalbe.
Since upgrading i have had nothing but trouble from the computer. the problems range from 'black screen' to simple random crashes of applications. i have a error log that's massive (happens several time a day) - i'd paste them in here but it'd be a massive amount of text so i'v simply added one. so far fireworks, photoshop, the app store, disk utility, chrome, firefox, word, flash, i-tunes, safari, e.t.c have all crashed at times. the list is longer than my memory regards it.
i have been to the 'genius' bar where i was told that they dont know what's going on (and that i should go back to leopard!). i then searched online only to find so many examples of os lion users having similar problems that the responses are so vast i dont know which applies to my situation.
i have checked the activity monitor and that seems fine. i then ran disk utilities which shows a few repairs necessary but doesnt repair any of them.
i would appreciate anyone who knows how to read these reports to have a look and point me in the right direction as i am about to throw this thing in the bin.
The computer is super slow all the time even doing ridiculously simple tasks like opening a document or something like that.
any clues?
regards
Mark

Currently we suspect RAM to be the culprit. even though i memory tested the RAM and it passed no problems. if i run the computer with only 1x4gb slotted then the computer runs fine. it's when i add a second 4gb that it start doing all the crazy things i described. -
ADF application randomly refreshes the page and url gets new _afrLoop id.
I have an ADF application on 11.1.1.6.0 environment. Randomly it refreshes itself on a random event. It is very hard to reproduce as it is not so frequent, however it is critical as users are continuously working on this revenue critical application. When the refresh occurs _afrLoop id changes in the url.
It seems that when users press the link/button(most of them are partial submit) the browser session is trying to communicate with the server, but the server has lost the track of the session and gives new _afrLoop id causing it to reload the page.
ADF logs does not show any indication this this issue. Did some research online and found following threads similar to it.
Re: _afrLoop causing endless loop in my login.jspx in ADF Security
However, in my case it just refreshes once and does not get into infinite loop. Also it does not happen on login but it is happening randomly when user is working on it.
The application is deployed on the cluster, we have tried running just one node but the issue is still there.
Our next steps is to remove the Trinidad filter as suggested by the above thread however it seems this could be risky as mentioned here(Remove trinidad filter from web.xml impact in adf
Any help or pointer in the direction to solve this is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Amit

Edited by: Amit Patel on Jan 8, 2013 8:29 AMDear All,
I faced the same issue.
1. Happens only in IE, when you navigate from one application (say A with web server as HTTP OHS) to another application (say B with web server as HTTPS apache). Both being webcenter applictaion
2. If i hit the URL of application B web server directly this does not happen
3. If I hit the weblogic managed server instead of the ws for application A and navigate to application B there is no _afrloop
4. When i access application A and navigate to application B through the WS _afrloop goes infinite
As solution I added the below parameters in my OHS http.conf file, and issue got resolved.
Yet there is one more issue where the IDM cookies are getting cleared, this will help if you are not using IDM in the OHS web servers for authentication.
Please provide inputs.

How can I restore my application icon. Itouch it and Puff dissapear .
Thank you.Is the problem that the Applications folder as shown in the hard drive's window does not depict the "A" glyph?
...or that the icon shown in the Dock is that of one of the apps (often the noe for App Store) rather than that of a folder? If this is the issue, right click (or Control-click) the icon in the Dock, then select "Folder" in the "Display As" section of the menu that apears. -
[iPhone] Quiz application randomly crashing
Hi,
I have developed a simple quiz application but it keeps randomly crashing when I use it. The application has no warnings or errors and I have checked for leaks using Instruments but still cannot find out why it keeps crashing randomly.
Sometimes it will crash as soon as I initialize the game, other times it can take 5 minutes before it crashes. This randomness keeps throwing me - I am performing the same methods/actions in the same UIView but sometimes selecting a button will be successful other times it can cause it to crash.
Has anyone got any ideas why it might be crashing randomly or could you point me in the right direction to another useful application similar to instruments to help debug apps?
Thanks for any help,
AnthonyDo a Google search for NSZombies Set these up in XCode and enable.
Most likely you're releasing something when you shouldn't be.
Test on the simulator first, check the console outputs and place NSLog at key spots in your app so you can tell where it is. -
Strange problem with desktop applications randomly freezing
Hi guys,
Over the past two weeks I've noticed that a few, very specific applications, have been crashing horrifically for me. Specifically, they're Firefox, Chromium and Eclipse and anything else powered by Java as well. I found the Eclipse issue people talked about on here regarding the upgrade to Xulrunner, but they only partially fix my problem.
What happens is the applications will randomly freeze, completely. The gui locks up and the window becomes a grey box, and the only way I can get rid of the window is with kill -9.
I've tried figuring out what's wrong, but honestly I have no idea. I'm running 32bit Arch, with a Nvidia 8800GTX card on the official binary drivers, using Openbox. Everything as of the time of this post is up to date throug Pacman.
Also, with the amount of problems I'm seeing on Gnome3 in here, what about creating a temporary sub-forum to hold them all? It would certainly tidy this one up a lot.My system has started "freezing". Actually, usually when I'm browsing the net, Chromium stops loading pages. Conky stops updating, and usually I can't switch to another programs. I can't start xkill from menu, menu opens but nothing starts. If I run "ls" etc in Terminal, nothing happens
I can however control+alt+F1 to CLI, but if I try to login nothing happens. If doesn't help even if I kill X (I started it with startx). And if I don't kill X, I can't go back from CLI with control+alt+F7, there's just a black screen.
I'm using Nvidia drivers also, and XFCE4. This started happening some time ago, I think I was using Gnome2 back then. And I have updated my system, and this has happened at least with 3 kernel versions. There's nothing on logs. Well, actually, there's "TCP: Possible SYN flooding on port 6881. Sending cookies" errors on everything.log. But those don't happen when system freezes. And sometimes Chromium stops loading pages but other programs don't freeze, I think it's a problem with cache or something.
Not really sure if this everything happens because of Chromium. I think I'm gonna switch back to Firefox and see what happens. Usually I'm running Chromium, Opera (use it just for a couple of pages), couple of Terminals and Kaffeine. -
Applications randomly freeze for a few seconds?!
Hi guys,
I have had nothing but trouble with this most recent iMac I purchased 4 months ago. It's the 24" described in my profile. AppleCare came out and recently replaced my faulty HDD, and put a 500gb Hitachi in (replacing 500gb Seagate).
Anyway, for no reason, after a fresh install and all the updates, applications will freeze for a few seconds and show the spinning beach ball- doesn't matter what application (Wow, Safari, Quicktime, Skype, Adium, etc.)- anything! I can see in activity monitor that there is a spike in the disk activity at the time, but cannot explain why. It's a brand new hard-drive! Interestingly, there is no corresponding jump in CPU or RAM access, so it's obviously some kind of data-dump issue with the HDD....the new HDD...
Looking in Activity Monitor, it appears to be the data read/sec that is spiking.
This is extremely frustrating, and I thought the new HDD would solve this, but apparently not. I don't particularly wish to reinstall OSX, and AppleCare in Australia is shut at the moment (midnight)
Does anyone know of a solution, or why it's happening?
I never had ANY of these problems with my first 24" that I bought late last year, with stock everything (hdd, gfx, etc.)....I feel like this one is faulty by nature....
Thanks!
EDIT: http://forums.mactalk.com.au/showthread.php?t=36763 shows my original HDD issue with the previous HDD....you can see this *****Charles Minow wrote:

Hmm, I actually think it might be this new HDD that has been installed. Whenever it wakes from sleep, it takes a MUCH longer time than my previous machine, and even my previous hdd which was faulty.
And I can hear it first start to spin the HDD up in a little whir, then the clicky sorta bits where it is reading it, and then finally after the spinning ball, it gives me the PWD screen.
It has to be the HDD. Calling Apple in the morning...
Sound like that could be a HDD problem. One way to confirm it is to look at the Console application from your Utilities folder. Look at the System Log and Console Log and see if you see any lines with text like "disk0s2: I/O error." at the times when you see the freezes and hear the clicks. Note that the numbers in the disk0s2 part can change, depending on how your drives are set up.

Thanks, Charles.
Looking at the Console log, it doesn't seem to have any i/o errors. Since both logs are quite lengthy, and the quoting system here is a bit akward, I've linked them:
Console.log: http://www.miraclesalad.com/webtools/clip.php?clip=e04
System.log: http://www.miraclesalad.com/webtools/clip.php?clip=e06
Couldn't really see anything there, but have a look if you'd like. Looking forward to calling Apple Support today and finding out what the deal is...only just got this new HDD put in! -
All sound randomly dissapearing after use of about 2 hours or so
My sound randomly stops working after a few hours of use. I need help because I tend to be in long-term Skype calls and when I'm editing or watching over a video for business purposes my audio randomly cuts out. I have found a way to fix it and one way
only and that is to reset my PC. Is there any other solution? Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:
Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
Expand Custom Views
Click Administrative Events
Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file to Onedrive or a file sharing service and put a link to it in your next post
If you have updated to win 8.1 and you get the error message "the system cannot find the file specified" it is a known problem. The
work around is to edit the registry. If you are not comfortable doing this DONT. If you are, backup the key before you do
Press Win+"R" and input regedit
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Channels. Delete "Microsoft-Windows-DxpTaskRingtone/Analytic"

Applications randomly freezing then quitting
Hi,
This started about a week ago and has gradually got worse. I first noticed it in safari. It now happens in lots of programs. It will stop responding, the loading cursor will come up for a second and then it will quit, losing any work i have open. It is now doing it in sketchup and just lost me some work
I have repaired disk permissions, i am on the latest possible update. What could be wrong?
Any help appreciated.Hello Oliver,
I'm sorry but the problem cannot be diagnosed with just the info you've provided.
Please open Console and check to see if there are any crashes listed. Copy at least the first statement (type of crash), through the first thread ("0") entire - (there will be several numbered lines under Thread 0: copy them all.) Then paste it all in your reply here.
The "best" way to post crash reports is to run the application which most often crashes until it DOES crash - then immediately check for a crash report. That way, the freshest information is provided.
Also: if you say that you have "the latest possible update" - I still have to ask whether that statement applies to the application(s) or to the System updates. I notice that your settings indicate you're running 10.4.10 - that is not the latest version of 10.4.x, it's ".11" at the last place. If you already have 10.4.11, please reset your settings to correct that. Also tell what version of Safari you are running, since that's the first application you mention in regard to the problem. Thank you. -
Install Multiple Applications Random Behaviour
Guys,
I have this strange issue running a task sequence where sometimes all the applications install without a problem in my task sequence but other times (on the same machine) some are missed out.
For example Office, when I inspect AppEnforce.log after the TS completes it has no reference to even attempting the installation.
Any assistance greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

All Things ConfigMgrI did but now I unticked it to get some more diags from smsts.log.
It looks to be hash verification errors (as per the lines below from CAS.log) but pressing validate on the application content doesn't bring back any errors and the content validates without error.
CAS.log

From smsts.log I get the following:-
Execution status received: 24 (Application download failed )
Installation failed.
This application (Office) has two deployment types, one for English and one for French OS language. I have seen hash verification errors actually be memory problems before so will try a new client and also potentially a problem with Cisco WAAS or Riverbed.
