Applications showing blank pieces (ical, app store, dashboard, etc)

A whole bunch of applications and desktop features (like ical, finder, etc) are opening up with blank or missing items - it almost looks like an empty page (like my calendar has no words, not even the months, buttons, etc). It keeps happening with various apps on my imac. When I open the App Store, for example, I'll see an icon and some stars - and no text or prices or anything else. Dashboard shows the items - but with no substance (just the pictures). So where's all the text and actual info?
I have a new imac, about 1 month old. I don't do anything weird or complicated. This just started happening. I tried googling it but nothing came up.
Any ideas?

If it's a new machine, then simply backup the small amount of files you have to a external drive or DVD/CD.
Disconnect this and any other drive(s) devices.
Stick the OS X install disk that came with your computer in and reboot holding c
Second screen in the utilities menu has Disk Utility
Select your drive on the left and click Erase > Format HFS+ Journaled > Security Option > Zero All Data (important)
Let it rip, going to take a hour or so.
When that's done quit and your back in the installer, install OS X.
Reboot and go through the setup again, this time use Software Update right away and get on 10.6.8
When you install programs, leave Microsoft and Adobe stuff for last and give some time (like a few days) between these installs. So you know which one is the problem.
In fact it might be good to check for updates first before installing.
There is a free office software that reads Office files, is a lot more stable than MS Office.

(note: sometimes what happens is OS X is injected onto bad sectors on the drive at the factory, it causes a lot of glitches and unexplained behavior. The Disk Utility > Zero maps these sectors off and gives you a more stable computer)

Depends on where you got it - if it came on yoru compujter then you need to have accepeted it in the App store - and it will be in your purchases when you log in with the Apple ID that you used to set up your computer - it mahy be hidden - if you do not find it unhide applications in teh App store

The apple ID is showing incorrectly in the app store. I've signed out and then signed back in with the correct email but it continues to show incorrectly.

If you're trying to update an application, you need to delete and redownload it, which may require repurchasing a paid one.

Thanks for your advice, I went to the apple shop today for a face to face meeting with a tech and he checked everything and could not figure out why I was having this problem so we decided to give up on that account and create a whole new one for me using a different email address.
Now I can download apps on both my iPhone and ipad2.

I updated via my iPhone 4s. The apps were on my iPhone 4s. That's all the information that I have. The update to ios7 seems to have gone smoothly - everything else is working, phone texting, email, internet, etc. But all of the apps I had installed over the past year are no longer showing up as shortcuts. No facebook, no twitter, no espn, etc. They are all still listed in my app store as purchased, but the shortcuts and my folders are gone. Thanks.

1. If you downloaded it for free the first time it should then be free for you forever to re-download and update.
2. If the app is no longer on the store then you cannot re-download it, I suggest you save an extra copy of the one you already have. I know I backed up my precious phonesabre.
3. Updating/installing directly on the iPhone has always gone fine for me. I didn't know there were issues.

I've installed Mavericks but it still shows up in the App Store as "Download"

I've installed Mavericks several times - from the update section of the App Store to the Featured Section and even tried using cmd-r and a fresh install of the OS. Looks like it installed fine, but it still shows up in the App Store as to be downloaded and not installed.

Spoke with Apple Customer Care. They said it was normal and allowed Mavericks to be downloaded on multiple machines. Looks like all went well.

No. Reinstalling OS X leaves all your files intact. Unfortunately it also leaves system modifications such as those installed by CleanMyMac intact as well. Eradicating them is up to you.

If you look at the top left of your screen you will either see a 3G (or 4G if you have AT&T) or you will see the wi-fi symbol. If you don't see the wi-fi symbol you are connecting to Gmail through your cellular data plan, not via wi-fi.
To answer your question, it doesn't happen often but when it does the steps I mentioned above will normally resolve it. Hopefully you won't have any further problem with this.

Updates don't show up in the App Store

I've been running Yosemite on my late 2012 iMac ever since the early developer previews of it, and eventually once Yosemite was released I "upgraded" from the last DP to 10.10.1. Ever since then, my App Store just does not ever show any updates any more. I know 10.10.2 is out but it's not showing up, and I also know several regular applications that have newer versions (and they show up as being installed under Purchases) but they're also not showing up under the Updates tab.

Also, under Purchases it says Yosemite is not installed, but I clearly have it running. Any idea how to fix this so I can start getting updates again? The App Store just seems super broken for me.

There are a lot of other threads from people reporting a problem with a blank Updates tab in the App Store app - it looks like there is a problem at Apple's end which they need to fix.
If you go into the Purchased tab in the App Store app you might be able to update the apps from there, though you will need to scroll through the list (potentially going through the A to Z list on the left-hand side of the screen, and similarly tapping the 'iPad Apps' button at the top left of the screen and selecting 'iPhone Apps' and going through them) to find those with updates and individually update them.

Whenever I try to tab my purchased in the update feature of app store; not only does the long list of my previous purchases do not showed up like in IOS 5 do but after a while it just prompt out to the main home page. I tried this for both my 3GS and 4GS too and both have the same problem. APPLE INC please rectify this serious problem as soon as possible.

Apps purchased with a Mac don't show as installed in App Store

This may be related to a question I recently posted about iPhoto, but I think I am beginning to understand the problem better now so will rephrase it here.
In 2009 I bought an iMac (a lovely machine with 2.66GHz Intel i5 quad core and 8Gb of memory, plus the biggest screen available - I went for maximum spec at the time!). With the iMac came iLife (iPhoto, iMovie, Garage Band...). I also bought iWork (Pages, Numbers, Keynote...).
I have now installed OS X Mavericks, and am becoming totally confused about the upgrades to these applications. I think this is perhaps because I didn't buy the original software through the App Store and only set up my Apple ID quite recently (within the last year I think)
Here are my issues:
1) iWork 09. I can see that there are new versions of Pages, Keynote, etc (eg Pages 5). However, as far as I can see these have reduced functionality compared to iWork 09 - so I want keep the iWork applications. But iWork applications are all iWork 09 and they seem to want to upgrade to iWork 11. But where is iWork 11 and how do I upgrade to it? And why are the new versions of Pages, Keynote etc dumbed down compared to the older versions?
2) iLife. I just opened Garage Band, which I have used in the past to experiment with Podcasts. Garage Band opened and said it wanted to upgrade to version 10.05 - so I said ok why not? It went through the upgrade process successfully - and now Garage Band has lost track of all my previous Podcasts and not only that it tells me it doesn't know how to do Podcasts!!! Happily, it turns out that Garage Band 05 is still on my system and still works (and knows about my previous files). But frankly, what a mess!
In the App Store, Garage Band now shows up as "installed", but iPhoto and iMovie do not. On the other hand, maybe I don't want the new versions if these are also "dumbed down" compared to what I already have.
Enlightenment would be very welcome!

That's why. You didn't buy it from the App store.
You can only get a physical copy of it if you buy the OS separately.
There's no reason to need a physical copy unless you are trying to install it on another machine, which you don't have a licence to when Lion is pre-installed. It's analogous to the old gray disk/white disk difference in the old days. Gray disk (comes with your computer) can't install on any other machine. White disk (you buy the OS separately) will install on anything.
If you need to re-install on your own machine, you use the Recovery disk or the Internet recovery mode.

Server.app shows as uninstalled in App Store

I just upgraded a Mac Mini from Snow Leopard Server to Lion Server via the App Store, and as expected, it installed OS X Lion Server (aka Server.app) along with it. However, during the installation some migration failed and I then rebooted into the OS, which seems to work as expected (only use it as time machine, file and DNS server so I guess the lack of migration didn't impact me).
However, now when I launch the App Store on the brand new Lion Server and go to "Purchased" I get OS X Lion as installed but OS X Lion Server as not installed, even though the app is there in Applications and working fine as far as I can see. When I try to install it from the "Purchased" tab, I get an error: "Server is already installed on this computer. Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to check for available updates". A Software Update gives me no Server.app updates and the "Updates" tab in the App Store is empty.
Any ideas?

I find it strange for this to be standard behavior as you mention, since Server.app is just another App Store item. I have the suspicion that the failed Server components migration just after install marked Server.app as "half installed" or something similar.

When are the App updates on the UK App Store through iTunes going to start shopwing up?
I have 3 devices all showing App Updates. They can be updates through the device. iTunes 11.1.3.8 however says all my Apps are up-to-date, which they are not (and before anybody says anything - i only have 1 email adddress and 1 account and the stupid suggestion of moving a QT dll is never going to fix the App Store not detecting new apps).
It is damned inconvenient and rather labourous updating the same App on 3 devices, not to mention a cmplete waste of precious bandwidth.

Thanks for your advice. Even though I did not take your advice, I guess it randomly worked! I went into the App Store, and went into a search. Then I went back to updates and it showed up. Even after they were updated, the updates section was working again. Instead of showing a blank screen, now it shows the usual "There are no updates" message.
Just a tip, if you have not updated recently, Angry birds has an update. You might want to search for that. I think apple pushed a silent update to the App Store to fix the issue.
Can someone please confirm that the issue is fixed? Then my question will be solved.
