Applications take a lonnnnng time to open after startup

I'm not sure if this is a problem or just the way the Mac works. Either way I'd love an explanation if someone knows.
After I start up or restart my Mac, it boots just fine, not too slow or anything. Once it looks like I should be ready to open up applications and get going (i.e. external HD is booted, dock is all good to go), though, it seems to take a VERY long time for them to open. If I open up Firefox, it takes at least a minute to open and load my home page, whereas once this initial slow period is over, it takes only seconds.
I didn't notice this as much with my PPC iMac but it's very obvious with the Intel one. As I said, after the initial slow period is over, everything works fine. Is this working the way it's supposed to? Thanks.

Does this happen to you with all applications?
Yes. It happens with any application I open during the "slow minutes" after I boot up. Entourage, despite working under Rosetta, normally opens almost as quickly as, for example, iTunes. But even iTunes takes forever during this period.
Also, how much RAM does your iMac have?
2GB.
In my MacBook, applications open almost instantly.
Again, this is just in the couple of minutes after startup. Ordinarily my applications open almost instantly as well. I'm just trying to figure out what's slowing my computer down so badly just after it boots up. Thanks for your reply!

I'd suggest tracing system activity when this long runtime issue occurs, so you could know where this time is spent (db access ? etc) ... a plain SM50 call in parallel could do the trick if runtime is long enough !

  • Videos take a long time to open after the last quicktime update

    Hey guys
Since I've downloaded the latest quicktime update videos are taking a very long time to open. They used to open instantly and now they take about 40 seconds (negligable difference if quicktime is already open or not).
This is with a Powermac G4 1.25Ghz with 2GB RAM running 10.4.10 and all latest updates.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?

  • Applications take 1-2 minutes to open at startup.

    Hello,
I've had a problem for a while with my iMac taking 1-2 minutes to open applications after startup.
I then cleared up a lot of hard drive space & installed Leopard--and that seemed to do the trick.
But the problem has come back. Any application takes at least one minute to open properly after the computer is started up (Mail, Safari, iTunes etc)
I am running Leopard 10.5.8 with 2GHz INtel Core Duo & 2 GB 667 MHz Memory.
With 45 GBs of free hard drive space.
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Marc

    Hi All,
    Issue Description:
When the report is submitted, the data gets populated into the table in less than 30secs and xml gets generated within a minute.
But the program takes some time in displaying the output around 5 mins but when we tried with html, it opens up quickly.
The template has a complex matrix, layout wherein, we are using nested FOR loops to display the data in the required format.
Yesterday, we ran the report “Custom GL STAT Trial Balance Report” in DEV Instance and for around 500+ records, it took around 5 mins.
The excel file is only 1 MB and xml generated is 245 KB
Moreover, recently we had increased the OPP jvm to 3GB to avoid java.lang.memory error what was occurring earlier.
    select DEVELOPER_PARAMETERS
    from FND_CP_SERVICES
    where SERVICE_ID = (select MANAGER_TYPE from FND_CONCURRENT_QUEUES where
    CONCURRENT_QUEUE_NAME = 'FNDCPOPP');
    2 3 4
    DEVELOPER_PARAMETERS
    J:oracle.apps.fnd.cp.gsf.GSMServiceController:-mx3072m
Could this issue be due to JVM increase issue or something else?
How, could we monitor the jvm while the report is running to troubleshoot the issue?
Thanks for your time and help on this if anyone is willing to share such an experience faced before?

    Here are some troubleshooting steps.
Does this behavior persist if  you:  (1) Try it from a different user account, e.g., Guest?  (2) Try it after starting up in Safe Mode ? (3) Try it after turning off all Safari Extensions? (4) Turn off all virus scanners, system cleaners, and third party optimizers?  (5) Delete all malware, (6) Temporarily disable all internet plug-ins?  (7) Make a burnt offering to Zeus?

    Hi Hussein,
Thanks for your prompt reply and my apologies for the substantial delay in mine.
We did some trouble shooting since then.
We repolved the problem by choosing a pdf format instead of the seeded RTF format. This opened up the output in a couple of minutes because the pdf formatted output was about 50mb vs the RTF output which was 300MB+.
But the ORIGINAL problem still remains. The xml tagged .out file is still huge with a size of nearly 1gb!
My earlier questions here now boil down to the following questions.
Q1. Is the huge XML Publisher's .out file expected in R12?  It really is massive!  The text file from 11i was just 19MB
Q2. Oracle does not seem to offer the option to format the output in plain text ...We see PDF, RTF but no plain ugly text.  I would expect plain text file to be much smaller.  How can we get the output in plain text?
1.Yes our stats are upto date. Let me emphasize that we do not have a performance problem with the report itself. The issue we are having is opening up the output.
    2. The authentication error is resolved. It was because of formatting the reports incorrectly.
    3. We did not use the usual tuning procedures such as tkprof because we do not have a performance problem.
    4. We checked the OPP file and there are none. I reiterate, The report does complete without issues. It is just that the output takes a long time to open up in the RTF
I will appreciate if others  can share any experiences if you have faced this situation and how you have handled it.
Thanks in advance for your time!

  • Lenovo Services/Program takes a long time to start after bootup

It seems like Lenovo services take a long time to start after boot up is completely done.
My Bootup time is less than a minute (0:51s), but my lenovo services (Power Manager Gauage, Lenovo Services in the Sidebar, have th ThinkVanatage Button work, and most annoying of all is having access to my network card to change networks) takes about 2 minutes.
Is there a reason why this is taking so long?

    Any ideas?

  • AP Trial Balance - File is massive and takes a long time to open up

    Hello,
We are upgrading from 11.5.10 to 12.1.3 and are running into some serioud problems with the Accounts Payables Trial Balance report in Detail Mode.
    1. The Report takes upwards of 10 minutes to open up - and in many cases does not.
    2. On further research we see that the report output file is > 500MB whereas comparable 11i Trial Balance files are only 19MB.
    3. We tried running in various formats Text, PDF, HTML with no luck.
    4. In fact HTML and Text formats gave “Authentication failed” errors when we tried to open the report.
    My questions are:
    1. Why is there a such a large increase in file size? Is this expected going to R12?
    2. Is there a way to speed up the opening of the large files or create smaller files? - (summary mode, and smaller date ranges are not options as per business needs). Even a 2 month date range give the same problems.
    3. We noticed that the XLA_TRIAL_BALANCES table has 36,521,125 records...LARGE.
    4. We compared the ap_liability_balance records between 11i and R12. We have 29,171,382 in 11i and 37,769,034 in R12. But this is expected as we purge regularly in 11i production and I don't think this difference (about 30%) in the size of the tables should cause such a large difference in the size of the report files (nearly 2000%!!!).
    5. Why are we getting Authentication failed errors? Just for these reports?
Of course we opened an SR, but you know how SRs go :-) and this is a time critical project with our deadlines nearing.
Any help or pointers from the experts here is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Denis,
Extremely Sorry for not providing enough information.
Business Objects is of BO 4.0 FP3 SP12.
BI is 7.10  Support Package 10 and Revision 627.
The point is While Opening Report In BO 4.0,it takes lot of time to open.
This generally happens whenever we have  to open  report for the first time in laptop/Desktop machine.
This always happens whenever we open the report for first time. (Generally  when we have demo team metting to show our reports to management level and we face it takes lot of time )
Could you let us know for the same if someone else has also received this.
Please let me know if any other details is required.
    Regards
