Applications will not connect

all of a sudden I can't open certain apps, like Facebook and Words with Friends. I do have wifi connection. It will  say looking for updates and then go back to home screen. I have tried to reset it but that doesn't help.
any ideas?
Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, but no go. I don't think the problem is with Safari since all the Apple applications I've tried can't connect: Safari, Software Update, Music Store. I'll keep experimenting--I've gone through Disk Utility repairing permissions, that didn't help either.
If you can think of anything else, please let me know. I'm not very good with coming up with my own ideas. Thanks!
hi there--
the first thing i would do is launch safari
(hopefully you have a menu at least) and reset
safari. if that does nothing something worth trying
is backing up your booksmarks
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301239
and then pulling the
~/library/preferences/com.apple.safari.plist out of
the home user library and then restart the computer.
if it doesn't get safari up and running, put it back
in the library, and replace the new copy with the
old one. hope that works. [ : 0 ]

Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
In the upper left corner of the window, you should see a list headed Keychains. If not, click the button in the lower left corner that looks like a triangle inside a square.
In the Keychains list, there should be items named System and System Roots. If not, select
              File ▹ Add Keychain
from the menu bar and add the following items:
    /Library/Keychains/System.keychain /System/Library/Keychains/SystemRootCertificates.keychain
Open the View menu in the menu bar. If one of the items in the menu is
              Show Expired Certificates
select it. Otherwise it will show
              Hide Expired Certificates
    which is what you want.
From the Category list in the lower left corner of the window, select Certificates. Look carefully at the list of certificates in the right side of the window. If any of them has a a blue-and-white plus sign or a red "X" in the icon, double-click it. An inspection window will open. Click the disclosure triangle labeled Trust to disclose the trust settings for the certificate. From the menu labeled
              Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
    select
              no value specified
Close the inspection window. You'll be prompted for your administrator password to update the settings.
Now open the same inspection window again, and select
When using this certificate: Use System Defaults
Save the change in the same way as before.
Revert all the certificates with non-default trust settings. Never again change any of those settings.

Every time my MacBook Pro is put to sleep, it will not connect to the internet upon reopening unless I perform diagnostic assistant.

Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved. Make sure the box marked
Remember networks this computer has joined
    is checked.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading
Symptom: After restarting or waking from sleep, my computer might not connect to the Internet
    3. Reset the PRAM.
    4. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    5. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    6. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    7. Repair permissions on the startup volume.
    8. Turn off Bluetooth and test.
    9. Reset the System Management Controller.
    10. Reinstall OS X.

Are you running any of Symantec's (Norton) or McAfee's Internet security products or anything similar, or an antivirus/antispyware application? There have been reports that some such utilities treat an upgrade to iTunes as a new application and can block the application from connecting. So you have to go in and reset the utility to allow iTunes. The same thing can happen if you upgrade the security product (this has particularly been a problem with recent McAfee upgrades).
Check the settings for your utility. If iTunes is still listed, remove and re-enable the exception for iTunes. Consult your utility's documentation for the appropriate procedure; you can find instructions for Norton on Symantec's web page for iTunes. You may also need to check the built-in Windows firewall as well.
    Hope this helps.

  • Apple Applications Will Not Print

After installing new Epson 2.1 print driver in Snow Leopard all Apple Applications will not print now. (Text Edit, iPhoto, Safari …ect.) Yet all other Applications will print Adobe, Microsoft ect. ) Try downgrading print driver, but that did not work to solve problem. How can I solve this problem?

The printer drivers that shipped with the original SL are on the install disk and should be extractable with Pacifist. Additionally, if you're familiar with the Terminal.app, pop in the install disk, enter this in the Terminal window, and hit the return key:
    *open /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/Installation/Packages/*
That opens the folder holding the install packages. Drag the Epson ones out to the Desktop and manually install them.
If that doesn't fix things, then call Epson, since they put together the update package described in http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/firmware_hardware/epsonprinterdriver sformacosxv1061.html
Just saw your latest post. If the above doesn't fix things, then file a bug report with Apple via its Bug Reporter system. To do ths, join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report or enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure over submitting feedback is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.

  • Firefox will not connect to serever.

Firefox will not connect to server. Other application connect.
I have removed and reloaded firefox several times.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Mail application will not answer

    Mail application will not answer.
Lately I tried to solve a problem concerning Scandinavian letters. The thing is that Scandinavian letters in 'rich text' with Tiger Mail sometimes show up like Chinese signs or reversed questionmarks in Windows-recipients' mail.
Tom Gewecke explained it is due to two bugs in mailprogram in outdated MS Outlook.
I did what suggested. One of the suggesstions was to set Mail's default encoding to UTF-8. To do this I had to open Utilities/Terminal and type:
    'defaults write com.apple.mail NSPreferredMailCharset "UTF-8"'
I also put in a dingbat character in every mail to WIN-recipients, which was another suggestion to force MS Outlok to identify and use UTF-8.
This may have solved the problem so far. I think so.
It may be a coincidence. But after a day or so my Mail app. have troubled me ever since.
The application will not answer. It will not show the mails in the mailboxes.
I can't read og send mails. I can't quit the application, but have to force-quit
The connection to the internet is OK. Window/Mail-doctor shows there is connection to the internet. But in the Window/Activity the view shows that the activity is blocked.
    Please, anyone?!

    Hi again David.
Thankyou for you support so far. Had to sleep and do stuff … problem transformed:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Move the entire Mail folder out of
~/Library/ -- be sure to not overwrite the
    backup copy you did before.
    3. Open Mail. If any of your POP accounts is
configured to remove messages from the server right
away, either tell Mail to go offline immediately
after opening it, or shut down your Internet
connection before opening Mail. Then, configure the
account to leave Mail on the server for some time, so
that we can later get rid of the newly created Mail
    folder without losing anything.
    Post back with your observations.
:: I have done the three steps.
:: Then I moved back all my original mailboxes to the Mail-folder just to find out that all the messages in them will not load in Mail app. when I open it. I have all my original named mailboxes visible in Mail, but the content of messages will not show.
:: Other features in Mail are now at work: it opens and closes, I receive, send etc.
:: In ~/User/Library/Mail/Mailboxes on the other hand I find all the earlier recorded messages as .emls-files. But they don't show in Mail app.
:: Then I startede to import my messages from a copy of the removed and back-moved Mail-folder now placed on my external HD. This is extremely slow. Mail app. crashes again and again. Maybe because I have a huge pile of messages (more than 30.000).
:: If I divide each of Message-folder in my Mailboxes in the Mail-folder into smaller portions of messages I can succeed in importing them, 5 by 5 or 10 by 10. This off course is very, very time-consuming.
:: Lately the Import-folder generated by import in Mail app. disappeared! Again and agian it does not show by import. So I can't use this feature at the moment. Why does it disappear?
:: So how can I make the messages — which are present in the in ~/User/Library/… — visible in Mail app. again?
:: How can I make a better record and archive-system of my messages, maybe year by year (without having to save each one of them as RTF-files)?
    Thankyou,
    riprap

  • Second ereader will not connect

    Good afternoon rtulloch.
I am very sorry to hear about the issue you are having with your Sony Reader PRST2. We have some troubleshooting steps that you can try to solve this issue, first we are going to try a soft reset and if that doesn't fix the issue, you will need to perform a hard reset, but if you do the hard reset, everything will be deleted and the Reader will go back to factory settings.

  • Macbook will not connect to wifi, an environmental issue with wifi?

Macbook running OSX 10.85 will not connect to wifi, Apple support thinks it could be an environmental issue.  Am connected to wifi right now in recovery mode.  Has this happened to anyone else?  What did you do to correct the issue?  Also, 2 iPhones and an iPad connect without issues.

Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article. If you're running OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and take the remedial steps suggested in the summary that appears, if any. The program also generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 2
Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or your computer's firmware.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. Continue if you find that Wi-Fi is faster with Bluetooth disabled.
From that same menu, select Open Bluetooth Preferences. If the box labeled Discoverable is checked, uncheck it. Click the Advanced button, and in the sheet that opens, uncheck the top three boxes, if any are checked. Click OK. Enable Bluetooth and test again.
If the application called "Bluetooth Setup Assistant" is running, quit it. Note: this is not applicable to OS X 10.9 or later.
    Step 4
This step will erase all your settings in the Network preference pane. Make a note of them before you begin, and recreate them afterwards. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the preference pane.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 5
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 6
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

  • Mail Suddenly Will Not Connect

Mail has worked perfectly since buying this computer a year ago. I sync with three mail accounts: an exchange server at work, yahoo mail (POP), and my mobile.me account. Suddenly, mail will not connect with any of them, even though I am connected to the internet.
This problem coincides with my receiving the dreaded "self-assigned IP address" error message on airport. This prompted me to reset my airport express base station, to zap my PRam, and restart my computer a couple of time. I am now back online, but mail won't connect. I just get spinning wheels next to all three accounts, and the little hazard/exclamation point sign.
I tried connecting to the internet directly with an ethernet cable, and that did not help either. All the account settings in mail appear unchanged. All my downloaded messages are there. But I cannot connect. I have mail in the queue waiting to be sent, so I can't connect either to send or receive.
    Suggestions?

Could be a DNS issue, since you had to reset the basestation, if the DNS settings where being provided by DHCP.
See if you can do the following. (Ping your email servers)
    Go into the terminal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal
    at the prompt type
    ping (Work email servers address)
    you could see the following.
    PING pop-sbc.mail.fy4.b.yahoo.com (216.252.120.29): 56 data bytes
    64 bytes from 216.252.120.29: icmp_seq=0 ttl=57 time=23.697 ms
    64 bytes from 216.252.120.29: icmp_seq=1 ttl=57 time=23.364 ms
    64 bytes from 216.252.120.29: icmp_seq=2 ttl=57 time=23.788 ms
    64 bytes from 216.252.120.29: icmp_seq=3 ttl=57 time=24.701 ms
    64 bytes from 216.252.120.29: icmp_seq=4 ttl=57 time=23.382 ms
    If the address resolves correctly
Ping the Yahoo servers address, again you should see something similar to the above, if DNS is resolving the hostnames.
    Not sure about mobile.me
If DNS is not working you will see something like this.
    brent-hendrickss-mac-pro:~ hendrb$ ping [email protected]
ping: cannot resolve [email protected]: Unknown host
If it pings back correctly, do the following to make sure you can actually get out through the correct ports.
    1) Verify for each account, which port the server is using.
In Mail. Go to Mail / preferences / Accounts (Click on the advanced tab)
If you are using SSL the port # will be 995, if your are not using SSL the port # will be 110, the port # will most likely be different for the works Exchange server.
    2) go back to the terminal and see if you can telnet to the POP server.
    telnet pop.att.yahoo.com 995
If it is successfully you should see something like this
    rying 216.252.120.29...
    Connected to pop-sbc.mail.fy4.b.yahoo.com.
    Escape character is '^]'.
type BYE and enter to disconnect.
If it does not work and you get something like this
[email protected]: nodename nor servname provided, or not known
You might want to make sure you are allowing those ports in your firewall settings.
    Hope that helps,
    Brent

Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and take the remedial steps suggested in the summary that appears, if any. The program also generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • HT4528 Applications will not download to my iphone 4s

Applications will not download. They are on home screen but are transparent an say waiting under them. Has been two days now an have not installed yet. Also on my iTunes account my music will not download to the iPhone.

If the icon of the app draws on gray probably it's trying to update to a newer version of the app, you must be connected to the internet to complete the process, if you can not continue with your downloads, check the memory of your phone and be sure that you still have enough space to install the apps. Try to do a backup of your videos and photos on your computer and delete some files from yor phone. If you have enough space and you are connected to the internet then clic on the gray icon and the title will change to "paused" then clic it again and will try to reconnect to the server to resume the download.
