Applications will not minimize into the Dock

I installed the latest security update last night and since then I've had problems with the dock. I won't let me minimise anything to it. It doesn't seem to respond either when I roll over it. When I minimise the windows tey sort of blink dissapear then reappear.
Also a program called sticky windows isn't working at all now. What should I do? Is there a way of fixing it, if not then should I just revert to an older security update if that's possible?

Hi Alec, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, test if the Dock works right while in Safe Mode, reboot when complete, test again.
If it worked in Safe Mode & not in regular mode, then you have a 3rd party app interfering, maybe Sticky Windows.
Might also try trashing this file & reboot...

  • The publishing settings page does not open when I click on the domain name and the iWeb application will not stay on the dock.

    Hello,
I have been trying to help a friend who is having problems publishing her website. (She has done so previously using Mobile me)
There seem to be a couple of things wrong with the application,
1     if I drag the application icon onto the dock, it won't stay there
2     I wanted to change where her site is published to (she has bought a domain name and has a hosting service now) but when I click on the domain name I do not get the "site publishing settings page" so we can't enter the new details.  All that comes up is the main page of her website.
I would suggest uninstalling and re-installing Iweb, to see if that clears the problem, but as Iweb came pre-installed with her Imac, I am not sure that we can do this.
    Any ideas please?
she's using and imac 24 in (approx 4 years old) and running osx 10.5.8

NO - not correct.  Even if you are still using iWeb 08, you can still publish to another host and not MobileMe.  You do this by selecting the option 'Publish to a local folder" and this will publish the site to your desktop and you can then use an ftp programme such as Cyberduck to upload your site to your host.
MobileMe will not be here after the end of June, so you will have to find alternative hosting.  They are not taking any new subscriptions.
On new Macs, iLife 11 is pre-installed, but only iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand are included, not iWeb and iDVD. The Apple Online store is not selling the boxed version of iLife 11 any longer, so if you want to upgrade to iLife, then you'll have to look online at Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk for a boxed set of either iLife 09 or iLife 11.  Both contains iWeb 09, which is what you would want.

  • My web browser will not expand past the dock? The dock is always showing.

Any screen I englarge will not expand past the dock. The screen just sits on top of the dock, instead of in front of the dock like it used to. I don't like to enable auto dock hiding either.

To my knowledge and IIRC no window ever went In Front of the Dock. I can go behind it if you drag that window down from the title area but it won't expand from the bottom to in front of or even in back of the Dock. And that is the way it should be. It won't cover the menu bar either.
If you want the app to go farther then set it into Full Screen Mode.

my iBooks application will not connect to the iBooks store

Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
In the upper left corner of the window, you should see a list headed Keychains. If not, click the button in the lower left corner that looks like a triangle inside a square.
In the Keychains list, there should be items named System and System Roots. If not, select
              File ▹ Add Keychain
from the menu bar and add the following items:
    /Library/Keychains/System.keychain /System/Library/Keychains/SystemRootCertificates.keychain
Open the View menu in the menu bar. If one of the items in the menu is
              Show Expired Certificates
select it. Otherwise it will show
              Hide Expired Certificates
    which is what you want.
From the Category list in the lower left corner of the window, select Certificates. Look carefully at the list of certificates in the right side of the window. If any of them has a a blue-and-white plus sign or a red "X" in the icon, double-click it. An inspection window will open. Click the disclosure triangle labeled Trust to disclose the trust settings for the certificate. From the menu labeled
              Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
    select
              no value specified
Close the inspection window. You'll be prompted for your administrator password to update the settings.
Now open the same inspection window again, and select
When using this certificate: Use System Defaults
Save the change in the same way as before.
Revert all the certificates with non-default trust settings. Never again change any of those settings.

  • My iMac will not boot into the Apple Hard Ware test. Why is this?

I have a late 2012 27 inch iMac. It will not boot into the Apple Hard Ware test. I do have File Vault turned on. Will this stop it from booting in to the test?

See Using Apple Hardware Test. For some Apple computers that shipped with OS X Lion, if Apple Hardware Test cannot be found on the hard drive, an Internet-based version starts up instead. An Internet-enabled connection via ethernet or Wi-Fi is required to use this feature. Some computers that shipped with Lion require a software update to use this feature. See Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery for more information.
Note: your machine cannot be running Mac OS X (10.6.7).

  • Safari & mail Icons will not stay in the Dock?

Two days ago I noticed that both Safari & Mail icons were not in the dock. I opened applications and returned them, they just vanish, when I open them from apps they both work OK.
I have worked round the problem by using an alias and placing that in the dock. Any way I can get back to were I was?

When you launch the applications and Control-click on their icons in the Dock, do you see "Keep in Dock" or "Remove from Dock" in the contextual menu? If the menu says "Keep in Dock," click on that setting.
Forgive me if you knew this, because I can't tell from your description if this is relevant or not: Normally, application icons will appear in the Dock when the application is running and disappear from the Dock when you quit the application, unless you have set the application icon to stay in the Dock via the above method or by dragging the application file to the Dock. (Dragging the icon out of the Dock will have the reverse effect, the same as choosing "Remove from Dock," and I'm thinking that might be what happened that caused your icons to disappear from the Dock after quitting.) Creating an alias of the application and placing that in the Dock is a workaround, but shouldn't be necessary.
If the above doesn't work, something odd is going on with your Dock indeed. Post back and people will help troubleshoot further.

  • ITunes will not play from the Dock?

I upgraded the yesterday to iTunes 7. Since I alway have had this icon in my Dock and click on it from there, I opened the Applications and copied the newly installed iTunes.app to the Desktop. I then dragged it into the Dock. Now I ended up with the icon both on the Desktop and in the Dock. If I moved the Desktop icon to the trash, the Dock icon would not open and gave an error message that the application could not open because it was in the trash. If I then moved the app in the trash back to the desktop, the Dock icon would open iTunes.
How do I get the icon to reside only in the Dock as before upgrading it?
    Thanks

Leave the iTunes icon in Applications. Do not put it on the Desktop. Open your Applications folder & start iTunes. Either R-click or Option-click on iTunes in the Dock. Select Keep in Dock from the contextual menu. Or just drag iTunes icon to the Dock from Applications.

  • Browsers will not go into the background

Is there a bug in the Finder causing Firefox and Safari to refuse to go into the background when I click on an open window in Word or any other open application in the Finder? Even clicking on the dock icon of the application I want to bring in the forefront will not put the browser window in the background.
This problem is 100% reproducible if I am trying to complete a form on any given web site and need to access another application for information to complete the form.

Yeah, I think there is a bug in there somewhere. I have a multi-button mouse and for years and years have habitually option-clicked on the window of another app, or on Desktop, to hide open windows of space consuming apps such the browser when I'm going to do something else for awhile. Lately I've noticed Safari sometimes, but not always, will continue to display its window rather than hiding. Sometimes a simple click on where I want to be will cause the Safari window to finally disappear. Sometimes it works just fine, as it always has before. Just noticed this oddness recently--could have been introduced with the 10.4.6 update.

  • I have a I-MAC and have used firefox, but lately it will not open from the dock, any suggestions?

As stated above, have used Firefox from the dock for quite a long time, but recently it did not do anything when I clicked on it, just sat there. Have been able to get to it using spotlight, but even then have to go thru extra steps and go thru a step that says something like "this application was downloaded from the internet. Do you want to open it? YES/ NO " Any ideas ? Should I dump it and reinstall, and if so , how would I uninstall?

  • Application will not return to the page

I have an application that runs an oracle package.
the call in the apex process is something like
    callpackage.start_process.
The procedure is long and it completes, but the page disappears with the package is done.
This does not happen in the apex environment, just when it is deployed and the client calls the server.
This could be just a network issue, but it is a real show stopper, and i could use any info you can give me.
    Thanks,
    Doug

    Doug,
You can use APEX background jobs for long running processes. See this link for more details.

  • Mail icon will not stay in the Dock

A strange thing has just started happening with the Mail icon on my Dock, ( iMac 24" Intel 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo / OS 10.6.5 ).......It keeps disappearing from the Dock. When I replace it, dragging it from Applications to the Dock as you normally add an icon, it sticks there for about ten seconds, then disappears!
All other icons on the Dock are fine, Mail operates fine too but I have to pull it from the Applications menu every time to open it.
The iMac has been dormant for the past three months while I've been in Europe. I ran Software Update soon after starting the machine up when I returned, and then noticed this odd behavior.
    Any ideas anyone? Thanks!.....

The easiest thing would be to create an alias of the mail.app and drag that to the dock. See if that works for you.
If you want to go further, you can drag the com.apple.dock.plist to the desk top. Found in userhomefolder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Open terminal in your app>utilities folder
    paste the following command:
    *killall Dock*
    and return.
exit to end the terminal session and quit as normal.
If problem is resolved you can trash the plist file on your desktop.
Repair your Permission for good measure App>Utilities>DiskUtility>repair permissions on (Macintosh HD> first aid)

  • My calendar application will not sync with the Mac Calender app

I have implemented a calendar application which provides 2 methods for exporting the calendar. One method directly downloads a .ics file which can then be manually imported into a calendar client. The other method provides an URL which can be used by a calendar client to subscribe to the calendar. It is intended that the second method should work the same way as subscription to Google calendar.
With both methods, the .ics file is the same. When it is manually imported, it appears to work correctly. However, when the subscription link is used, the Mac calendar program does not find any events in the calendar. (Microsoft Outlook on Windows 7 experiences the exact same problem.)
While it seems from the manual import that the .ics file is correctly constructed, there is clearly something wrong with the subscription process. I'm hoping that there might be some ical experts in the forum who might be able to provide an insight as to what I am missing in getting the subscription service to work.

Never mind. Solved my own problem by finding the stupid programming error!

  • Overset text will not go into the text box that is part of the master for the next page

I am trying to (first time user) set up a simple trade-paperback sized book with some photos.  Have set up several masters for chapter title pages, chapter inner pages, etc.  When I copy text out of Word into InDesign, (copy/paste) the text overset box appears.  I load it, then go to the next page, which I have already formatted using one of the masters.  But when I select the desired text box ((Ctrl/shft) and click, the overset text forms a new text box, What am I doing wrong? thanks

I have done, this did work right for at least the left side of the spread, but never for the right side -
Make sure the left and right page master page text frames are threaded View>Extras>Show Text Threads. Here I have left and right page text boxes threaded on my A-master spread:
Checking Smart Text Reflow can make adding long text to master frames easier:
With Smart Text Reflow enabled I've released the  master page text box on page 1, note the released frame has a solid border, while the unreleased master page frames on subsequent pages are dotted indicating they are still master page items and not page items.
    The result of the paste:
