Applications won't launch after restore from dmg file

Hi,
I have setup a new iMac with latest Software updates and have installed Microsoft Office 2011 and Final Cut Pro. I then used Disk Utility to create an image (dmg file) of the iMac, this image I stored on an External Hard Disk. I then connected the Ext HD to another same spec. iMac, booted it from the OSX install disk, launched Disk Utility and restored the image to the other Mac.
The restore completed okay, rebooted the Mac off the internal HD. I renamed this machine and then bound it into Active Directory. Now no matter who I log on as, whether local administrator or Windows user, when I try and launch an Office application or Final Cut Pro, I get a message stating, "The (application name) installation did not complete successfully because there was a problem with the installer."
The application then does not launch.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this may have occurred?

Launch the Console utility and look for messages that might explain the problem.

  • Bootcamp partition Black Screen of Death after restore from DMG file + mbr rebuild

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro 15", and my hard drive died the other day. Thankfully I had a bitwise copy (non-compressed DMG file) of my Bootcamp partition from that morning via Disk Utility, and I had all of my Mac data backed up through Time Machine.
The new disk was installed with the factory default Mac OS. I was told to try and restore the Windows partition before I restored my Mac partition. I spent all weekend and the past two days trying to restore my Windows... I took it to the Mac store and they said this was "not in their skill set to assess".
First through Bootcamp I installed Windows 7 (I still have the original install disk!), then I restarted in the Recovery partition (that comes with Mac) to load the DMG file onto the Bootcamp partition. I had to load the DMG file into the source files on the left of Disk Utility by clicking it twice, and then selected all the files as the source image in the "Restore" tab of the Bootcamp drive, and the Bootcamp partition as the destination. Everything went smoothly as far as I can tell.
Here's where things go south. I restart, after the image is loaded onto the Bootcamp partition, into Bootcamp and I receive a "Missing Operating System" error.
I then run through all of the bootrec.exe functions
bootsec.exe /nt60 all /force (which resulted in "Bootcode was successfully updated on at least one volume.")
I ran DISKPART to flag the partition as active and navigated to Partition 4 (Bootcamp) and the readback was
    "Partition 4 Type : 07 Hidden : No Active : Yes Offset in Bytes : 320108232704 Volume # - Volume 1 Ltr - C Label - BOOTCAMP Fs - NTFS Type - Partition Size - 165 GB Status - Healthy"
chkdsk C: /f went well too if I remember correctly.
The only part that keeps my hopes up is that from Mac I can see all of my Windows files, it recognizes the Bootcamp partition, and everything is right in place. Any help is greatly appreciated! Also if anybody knows a better way to restore Bootcamp from a DMG please let me know! Thank you so much in advance for any feedback you may be able to provide. I can boot from my Windows installer and run any commands, and terminal is a thing

  • Itunes won't launch after restoring from backup

I have retored my machine from time capsule backup, and now iTunes won't start up. The icon launches, but nothing happens

Get rid of Norton's, it's far more trouble than it's worth. This is exactly the kind of thing that happens when you run Disk Doctor or the other parts of the suite, and is why they got out of the Utilities market for the Mac.
    1. Try repair Permissions with Disk Utility
    2. Try Trash the com.apple.iTunes.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder
    3. Try Re-install iTunes. Move the app from the Applications Folder to the Trash, then go to HD / Library / Receipts and trash any pkg file there with iTunes in the name.

  • IMac won't startup after restore from time machine

After I restore my backup from time machine ( twice ) mi iMac halt at startup and won't startup. It stuck at the apple logo forever.  I also restarted holding down command R safe mode and install OS X and it will startup okay but can't see my buck up files and applications here. Then I restore from time machine again using an earlier backup and it won't startup again. Please any help I will appreciate.

There could be a few reasons for this.
First what version of OS X do you have installed?
What version of OS X is the Time Machine Backup file from?
Did Reinstalling OS X from Recovery install the same version you had before reinstalling?
If you have not changed OS X versions then:
It sounds like there may be a bad file in the backup that is causing the computer to not startup after restoring it. This is especailly true if the computer boots just fine after a fresh installation of OS X, but without the Migrated Data being restored.
If that is the case, then the solution is not a quick one. You have to hunt down the bad file.
Moving Files Manually (Not in Migration Assistant)
Manually access your Time Machine backup folder from within Finder (you should see the backup drive in a Finder Window or on your Desktop). Once open, manually move data from the User folder (documents, music, movies, photos etc.) into their respective folders on the Mac. Reboot after each folder you move to see which folder contains the corrupted file then delete the affected folder/file after reinstalling OS X from Recovery.
If none of the files cause the computer to hang at startup after moving all your User data, then the issue is from within the System or Library folders.
NOTE: DO NOT manually move Applications, System, or System Library files over to the Mac. You can cause major issues with the current installation by doing so. It is safer to just reinstall all the Apps from wherever you got them so they can recreate their support files and such themselves.
    2- Using Migration Assistant
Basically, if you have discovered the affected file. You can just simply delete it from the backup folder.
Reinstall OS X after you have done that, and use Migration Assistant to automatically migrate the data over minus the affected file/folder.
Its a pain in the rear, but it will at least let you salvage most of your data.
Let me know what happens riorec!

Anyone know what this is about?
    I'm running OS X on a 2.7GHz i5 with 16GB of RAM on a iMac platform.
I've tried to re-instal OS X, but that didn't help me at all. It didn't even change the error message.
Thanks for the help apple community - Take care.

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

    02. select your Mac os X image from left panel box and then choose restore
    03. drag and drop the Mac os image to source

Mac Pro OS X 1.6.6, 4 discs (one to make fresh install - 2TB WD), 2x2.66Ghz, dual core Intel Xeon

Hi LInc. I tried your choice and succesfully installed over a 16GB pendrive. But could not do that with the 2TB green caviar... I also found that there are some issues with this kind of drive in the fourth bay, so I will change it to see if there is any difference. Cant make it work with TMachine also (known issues there too).

  • Restore from .dmg file

    Tech Specs:
    • Mac Mini
    • 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    • 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    • Version 10.6.4
My Mac Mini was getting the blinking folder with the question mark. I tried to do a Disk Repair through Disk Utility, but I received tree node errors. I did a backup of my hard drive through Disk Utility, and saved the new Disk Image file (.dmg) to an external hard drive and completely wiped out my mac mini and reinstalled the Apple operating system so that I could access my computer. When I go to Disk Utility to restore from my backup, I am unable to drag my hard drive into the 'destination' field. I am however, able to drag the backup .dmg file into the 'source' field.
I also tried going to Disk Utility > Image > Scan Image for Restore and am given this error: Unable to Scan (Invalid Argument)
Does this mean my hard drive data is corrupt?

You can't do that if you booted from the destination or source drive.
Try booting to Recovery and try again
OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
Just how did you backup the drive?
You said "I did a backup of my hard drive through Disk Utility," So you backed up a disk that did not startup/display question mark? I would expect the backup to have the same problem.
Maybe disk recovery software can get some info

  • Pages (and Keynote and Numbers) won't open after restore from Time Machine.

Hi, I tried to open my iWork suite tonight and kept getting an error message 'Pages cannot be opened because of a problem' followed by the text, below. Has anyone got any idea what I have done? What I need to do to get them back working?
Recently I did have a big clean up of my Mac Pro - which included drive renaming/home drive rename and relocation - all seems to be working fine for a few months until I've tried to use these applications for the first time tonight. Even restoring them from my Time Machine hasn't helped).
I'd be so grateful if someone can give me some useful advice.  Thanks.

I am getting the same exact error message, but I do not have Time Machine, so I cannot restore my system. I noticed that Pages would not load after I updated OS X to 10.7.4 on my MacBook Air. I also have an iMac at home that  has Pages installed. I had not updated the iMac to 10.7.4 yet, and I was able to open Pages. I next tried to open the version of Pages on my iMac while accessing it remotely on my Air. It gave the same message. Do you have any idea how I can fix this?

  • Applications won't launch after Installing Safari 3

I recently tried to download and install Safari 3 on Mac OS 10.3.9. After installation, Safari would not launch and neither will Mail. I have since gone back to Safari 1.3.2 but the Mail application still will not launch.
I would greatly appreciate any help! Thanks so much!

    Hi gelatian1
your error message is actually very simple - but due to the long file paths, seems complex...
a file named webcore, located in
    /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/WebCore.framew ork/Versions/A/
is telling your mac to find something in a file named javascriptcore which is located in
    /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaScriptCore.framework/Versions/A/
and it can't find what it's looking for....because one or other of the files ( never known it to be both ) is corrupted somehow. ( note, this might not be the only problem you have, but it's the one your error refers to... )
Both these files are contained in the safari 3.1 update package.
    soooo, you can either...
1: try downloading the diskimage of Safari 3.1 update for leopard & running it again, hoping that fixes things.
2: try running softwareupdate from the Terminal ( I believe that this bypasses the need for the files which stop you from running Software update normally ) . softwareupdate -l then enter will give a list of the updates that Apple think you need....... softwareupdate -i -a installs all updates that Apple think you need.
3: identify which of the files I first mentioned is at fault & perhaps use Pacifist to extract it from the update package & then place the damaged file manually. hoping that it's the only one.... I don't know if Pacifist works with Leopard update packages... I usually use something called UnPkg, which doesn't recognise the safari 3.1 Leopard package I downloaded , edit - I tried Pacifist & that wouldn't work either for me
Think I'd try 1: first; keeping the dmg in case you need it again.
This applies for you, running Leopard - anyone with 10.3.9 should ignore the above.

  • Applications won't open after switching from Mavericks to Lion!

I just restored my harddrive after trying to go back to Lion from Mavericks. After doing so, I tried opening up pages but the message "You have Mac OS X 10.7.5. The application requires Mac OS X 10.9 or later" keeps popping up. iPhoto, iBooks, and desktop/screensaver also wont open! help!!!!!!!!! ( I use a Macbook Air)

It sounds as if after you installed Mavericks your computer made a new backup so your most recent backup includes the Mavericks applications. When you reverted to Lion I'm assuming you used TimeMachine to restore your applications and data. Doing so resulted in the Mavericks version of Mail, etc getting installed. They won't work with Lion.
Sberman's idea may work. Open TimeMachine and 'go back in time' to when you still had Lion installed on the computer. Then restore the built in applications. That would involve all the built in Apple programs only. It may work. I've never tried it.

I copied my iTunes folder from my old computer to an external hard drive. I then copied that folder to a new laptop. My iTunes folder is showing two additional folders - iTunes and iTunes media (has all my downloads listed). However, iTunes won't open at all - I don't even get an error message. Any ideas?

Get rid of Norton's, it's far more trouble than it's worth. This is exactly the kind of thing that happens when you run Disk Doctor or the other parts of the suite, and is why they got out of the Utilities market for the Mac.
    1. Try repair Permissions with Disk Utility
    2. Try Trash the com.apple.iTunes.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder
    3. Try Re-install iTunes. Move the app from the Applications Folder to the Trash, then go to HD / Library / Receipts and trash any pkg file there with iTunes in the name.

  • Samsung 4500 Printer won't print after restoring from Time Machine

My HD drive went down, and was replaced with a new one (1TB).  Restored via Time Machine.  But the printer (Samsung) won't print now.  I get an error that a software update is required.  I tried the System Preferences route; then I went to Samsung and downloaded a driver (once), that didn't work.  I found another note that someone was having a similar problem, and tried this download
    http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SCX-4500W
Installed OK, but still no printer.
It worked fine until the software changes (I was using Mountain Lion before and after the HD failure).
But now, I have no printer.
Any suggestions besides buying a new printer?

  • ILife 08 will not launch after restore from backup

I had installed iLife 08 on a new mbp, when the screen stopped working so I thought I would try reinstalling the operating system. I backed up all my apps using apples .mac backup to a hard drive, reinstalled, and then tried to restore the apps. My problem is that none of the 08 versions of ilife are opening now, includiong iphoto. I don't have my install cds with me, otherwise I would use those. Does anybody know what to do so that these apps will launch? They appear for a second in the dock and then vanish... Thanks for any help.

iLife requires 10.4.10, I believe. Have you updated back to that OS?

  • Application won't launch after 10.7.3 upgrade

I use an animation program called Kinemac on a MacPro 2x 2.66Ghz 6 core with 14 Gigs of Ram, and the Radion 5870 Graphics card.
After the upgrade the program will no longer launch.  I've been working with the developer, but even he's out of suggesting to get the app to launch.
My Question:  Does anyone know if the  Video Card get an update of any kind, firmware, or otherwise?   I can get the program to lauch on different hardware running 10.7.3.
    Thanks.

Well, you're posting in the Power Mac (pre-Intel) forum.  By definition, no Power Mac can run Lion, 10.7.x.
Try the Mac Pro forum, or the Lion forum.

I have now added back all the items which were in my original Logins List except for "Spark Daemon" (a shortcuts manager), which I no longer have on my system. Leopard appears to be running fine now. Perhaps populating the list again was all that was needed.
