Applications won't open after error in a update using a Apple G4
Apple G4 wont open applications, it says application switcher error or error type 3, everthing used to work until when updating the mac a error accured it restarted, now it won't open an application without saying error type 3, or when it boots a bomb sign with the following message saying application switcher error please restart. does anyone know what i can do or whats happened? i have a boot disk which isn't the offical apple cd as i cannot find it or find a place where i could get one from if anyone knows where i could get one from that would be most helpful!!
Thanks.
haydn,
It sounds like you are talking about Application Switcher from system 6, twenty five years ago. If you are using system 9 and you happened to have other systems on your hard drive, the computer could get confused with what to do becausse it sees older software that the processor can not handle.
I looked at a map of England and did not recognize any cities that would have a Mac user group. If you google and find a user group near you, the best thing to do would be to find a Boot CD, put it in, restart while holding down the C key and see if you can clean up your drive.
Otherwise, ebay has boot CDs listed from time to time. This may look tempting:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/iBook-G3-Install-cds-x7-10-2-Jaguar-OS-9-2-2-OS-8-/2207859 53727?pt=UK_Computing_Apple_Mac_Accessories&hash=item3367de4bbf
But, here is the catch. The disks look like they are grey and not the universal install CDs. If one of the CDs is not for your exact model of computer, be sure and look for a CD that is white with an orange 9 on it.

Applications won't open after Quicktime Update...and fix won't work!
Hello,
I'm having the same problem as many others: after the recent Quicktime update most of my applications won't open.
I've followed the instructions from Apple at
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306043
However, when I do the "sudo" prebinding thing, I get this:
update_prebinding: error: dependent dylib is not prebound
update_prebinding: error 256 running updateprebindingcore
Any ideas?! Thanks!
Bjmchatt.

Applications won't open after software update
after i installed an automatic software update on my iBook G4, and did the restart, several applications won't open such as Safari, iTunes, iChat. I tried to reinstall the software update, but that won't open either. it just jumps up and down like normal, and then won't open. after i try again, it jumps only once. what the heck is happening??? and i'm not very computer smart so dumb it up for me
Hello, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates. -
Some applications won't open after updating to OS 10.8.5
I am running the Mountain Lion on a 2009 Macbook Air. I just did an update to 10.8.5 and now some of my applications won't open. A few of the appications that no longer run are Chrome, iPhoto and all Microsoft applications.
I tried uninstalling an reinstalling the apps but that did nothing, I also tried creating a new user account to see if the problem persisted in there and it did. I then tried removing my caches folder from Library which also fixed nothing. I then tried booting it in safe mode and the applications successfully opened in there.
I obviously can't just boot my Macbook up in safe mode whenever I need to use it so if anyone knows how this problem could be solved? They were all functioning normally before I did the most recent update of OS.
I have tried repairing the disk permissions but that resulted in no change also. I do not have the start up disk for Mountain Lion so reinstalling the OS is not possible, nor is booting from disk.
I'm in my final year of college, in the middle of my final year project I REALLY need this fixed. When I try to open iPhoto, Unity, Chrome or a few others it gives me the same error each time. "iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X"
But that doesn't make sense because I just updated the OS and all my applications are up to date also. I've tried reinstalling, no joy though. -
Applications Won't Open After Charging/Updating iPod
I downloaded several applications to my iPod Touch from the App store on my iPod. Then, I charged my iPod on my computer, downloaded the latest iPod update, and now the applications won't open on my iPod. When I press the application button, it goes to that app's opening screen and then goes right back to my iPod's main screen. What's the deal? Thanks!
This problem just appeared on my son's iPod Touch. I reset the iPod to it's factory settings. I did NOT restore back to my saved settings. When it was restored, I installed each downloaded application one at a time until I discovered which one was corrupting the operating system.

My applications won't open after latest update on my MacBook...help?
I just updated itunes (10.5), iDVD, and Safari, as well as Security update 2011-006 and a HP Printer update. Upon restarting my computer, various programs do not open (iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, iPhoto, Chrome, etc.) It tries to open, but then a "enter program name here has unexpectedly quit" box pops up.
I'm not having any success with the little things i've tried to do. Safari seems to be the only application that is still working, though not at it's best performance.
Any thoughts out there?I'm having the exact same problem. It is amazing how many problems the Macs actually have. I'm glad to see Apple has discontinued their false advertising pretending that Macs have fewer problems than PCs. Maybe the FTC made them stop.
Anyone found a solution to this? I have work to do and my computer is now paralyzed. Have already used Leopard disk to repair drive and permissions. App icons blink for a bit like they are turning on but then disappear. Happened immediately after I downloaded the updates that Appled told me to download. -
Aperture 3.1 won't open after 10.6.8 update
I've been working with Aperture 3.1 for awhile and recently updated to Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Aperture will not open after the update. I receive an error message that says I need to update Aperture, that it may not be compatible with my current version of Mac OSX. I tried downloading and installing the Aperture 3.1.1 update but the install package won't run displaying a message that I need Aperture 3 or later. Pretty sure I have Aperture 3 because I'm watching the application icon bounce in my dock with no response.
Any suggestions? Please don't suggest updating my OSX to Lion or later because 10.6.8 is as recent an operating system as my model can allow apparently. I can't find the Aperture disc to reinstall either....so hoping the responses aren't all just "you're screwed!".I installed snow leopard with the disc purchased from Apple. I will try downloading the 3.2.4 update. Thanks for the link. Here's a screenshot of the error message.

Some apps won't open after OS X Mavericks update
After the update to OS X Mavericks, some apps won't open on my macbook pro. That include things like preview, boot camp assistant, from what I've tried so far. When I click on those from applications menu or from the spotlight search, the icon appear on the dock very briefly(like 1 sec) and nothing happened after that. Based on the internet search, I tried the Disk permissions repair and didn't work. Any suggestions? Thanks
Hi aung.24,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. I would recommend trying the troubleshooting for "If the issue occurs in various applications, or in Mac OS X" from this article:

Itunes 9.1 won't open after 3/30/10 update
I let the software update prompt me to install the new version. It wouldn't open afterwards. I've gone through all of the troubleshooting articles and tips that I could execute and still none of them work. I've completely uninstalled all itunes, quicktime, and related components and then reinstalled. It still doesn't open. I'm a relatively happy (until now) itunes user, but I'm getting very frustrated and making contingency plans to recover my library and get it off of this laptop. Can anyone help me? Apple are you doing anything about this?
Hi People, thanks for your help. I had the same problem. After being prompted to update to iTunes Ver. 9.1 I went ahead and let it automatically update and install iTunes and Quicktime. After updating to Ver. 9.1, iTunes would not open or run on my Windows XP system. It would show up in "processes" as a running program but would not show up on my screen.
After reading your discussion about how Bonjour would interfere, I tried to uninstall it. It wouldn't uninstall because it is using one of the processes. I tried quite a few things including completely uninstalling all Apple programs and reinstalling iTunes. I manually uninstalled Bonjour. No luck!
Here's what you need to do. After reinstalling iTunes, Navigate to the Program Files\ Bonjour folder and rename this folder Bounjour.Old. Restart the computer. Bounjour service should not now show up as a service in Administrative Tools\Services. DELETE the Bonjour.old folder. THEN go to Control Panel - Remove Programs and REMOVE Bounjour. It will now uninstall sucessfully.
After doing this iTunes started right up, loaded all my old settings, and recognized my iPod just like normal. Hooray and good luck. -
Applications won't open after update to iTunes and QuickTime
I just allowed a software update for iTunes and QuickTime. After rebooting, I found that the Finder will not start, nor Mail nor most other applications. TextEdit will start, which gives me the Menu bar so I can switch users, but all users have the same problem.
I cannot see the hard drive icon without the Finder. If I hit the Finder button, it wiggles and then dies. Safari starts, but "quits unexpectedly" when I try to browse with it.
I bought the G5 with 10.2 installed, then upgraded to 10.3 I have the 10.3 upgrade disks, but don't know if I can use these to do an archive and re-install.
I can see the hard drive by doing an "open" from TextEdit, but of course I can't use that to open another application. I've booted of the 10.3 upgrade disk and used Disk Repair, but it found no problems. Lots of permissions problems, but I doubt that is causing the trouble.
I'm in a real fix here. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Ray
G5 Mac OS X (10.3.9) )
G5 Mac OS X (10.3.9)I'm having a similar problem only with disk utility after updating iTunes and Quicktime. I am unable to repair permissions, but otherwise the machine is working great as before. When I try to repair permissions using either Cocktail or Onyx it just keeps going, going, going and going but never finishes. It will run for several hours before I have to force quit the application. Repairing permissions has never taken more than 15 minutes prior to this update.
I decided to try using disk utility while booted to osx, I get a message that says communication between the disk managment tool and disk utility has been lost and operation cannot continue. The same error occurs when running disk utility off the startup cd. I restored using my backup then ran disk utility and all was okay using all of the methods mentioned above. I installed the updates again and the same problem occurs when trying to repair permissions.
Guess I will reload my backup and wait for a fix from apple unless someone chimes in with ideas on what could be wrong. Thank goodness for backups!!! This is the first software update that has given me any problems. Oh, one other thing. I installed the updates on my titanium powerbook running 10.3.9 and didn't have any problems. The setup on my tibook is essentially the same as my powermac G4. What gives? Anyone else having problems after installing the updates? -
Applications won't open after sleep
Hi everyone,
I am having trouble with my youngest son's MacBook Pro. After it has been sleeping for a while (doesn't happen when sleeping for only a few minutes) it will not open any applications at all. I get a window that says it can't open whichever specific application I am trying to open. I have to restart, after which everything returns to normal.
This mac has very little software on it, as it is primarily my young son's Minecraft machine, so I suspect something related to Minecraft, however I have my other son's machine (newer iMac) set up nearly identically, and it doesn't have this issue.
Any ideas out there?
Thanks a bunch in advance.

OS 10.10.1Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Applications won't open after switching from Mavericks to Lion!
I just restored my harddrive after trying to go back to Lion from Mavericks. After doing so, I tried opening up pages but the message "You have Mac OS X 10.7.5. The application requires Mac OS X 10.9 or later" keeps popping up. iPhoto, iBooks, and desktop/screensaver also wont open! help!!!!!!!!! ( I use a Macbook Air)
It sounds as if after you installed Mavericks your computer made a new backup so your most recent backup includes the Mavericks applications. When you reverted to Lion I'm assuming you used TimeMachine to restore your applications and data. Doing so resulted in the Mavericks version of Mail, etc getting installed. They won't work with Lion.
Sberman's idea may work. Open TimeMachine and 'go back in time' to when you still had Lion installed on the computer. Then restore the built in applications. That would involve all the built in Apple programs only. It may work. I've never tried it. -

CreativeCloud application won't open after migrating to new Mac (also running Mavericks)
I had CreativeCloud installed and working on my Mac running OS X Mavericks. Then I migrated to a new Mac, also running OS X Mavericks. My CreativeCloud 2014 applications all work properly. My problem is with the CreativeCloud application itself -- the little cloud icon that appear in my Mac's menu bar. When I double click the CreativeCloud application icon on my Dock, I see the Cloud icon briefly appear in the menu bar and then it disappears after a second or two. I went to the Utilities folder and I used the uninstaller to remove the CreativeCloud application from my Mac. I then downloaded the application installer and reinstalled it on my Mac. The exact same problem persists. This problem occurs in two different OS X user accounts on my Mac. How can I fix this problem?
Thannon88 please try utilizing the steps listed in Error "Failed to Install" Creative Cloud Desktop application - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/failed-install-creative-cloud-desktop.html to reinstall the Creative Cloud Desktop application.
If you continue to face difficulties then I would recommend starting the migration process over again. This time please only transfer your documents and settings. This will allow you a clean system to reinstall your applications. -
Applications won't open after upgrade to mavericks
I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks. That went OK. But afterwards some aplications and drivers don't work. For example, when I try to open the driver for my HP flatbed scanner 7400c, it says "you can't open because it may be damaged or incomplete". When I try to open Adobe Acrobat Pro, it says "it can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer(!)", if I try to open Adobe Photoshop CS2, it says "you can't open because Power PC appications are not supported". All these items worked just fine with Snow Leopard. Can anyone advise why this is happening and if there is anything I can do to regain access to these applications. I don't want to upgrade the Adobe apps, because I don't use them enough to justify the cost, and there are no new drivers for the HP scanner... it's old enough that HP has discontinued maintenance on it.
Or, in addition to Eric's knowledgeable information: partition your hard drive (or add an external drive) and install Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta checked; and, IMHO, Quicktime 7, too) into it and use the "dual-boot" system to switch between Snow Leopard and Mavericks as needed.
Here is a recent post I assembled that describes your situation in more detail:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta. Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion). While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
Workarounds:
1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
2. If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
3. Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions if they are available, or find alternative software that will open your data files, modify them and save them;
4. Install Snow Leopard Server (with Rosetta) into Parallels or VMWare Fusion. Apple is now selling Snow Leopard Server for only $19.99 + sales tax & shipping; call 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753). This solution will give you concurrent use of your PowerPC applications and access to Lion or Mt. Lion.

Your HP driver issue may be a bit more complex. Try Apple's free Image Capture application. Also, research HP support forum. Quite honestly, when my HP scanner/printer died and HP told me "tough luck; we'll give you a discount on a new one," I purchased an Epson all-in-one instead!
