Applications won't open after switching from Mavericks to Lion!

I just restored my harddrive after trying to go back to Lion from Mavericks. After doing so, I tried opening up pages but the message "You have Mac OS X 10.7.5. The application requires Mac OS X 10.9 or later" keeps popping up. iPhoto, iBooks, and desktop/screensaver also wont open! help!!!!!!!!! ( I use a Macbook Air)

It sounds as if after you installed Mavericks your computer made a new backup so your most recent backup includes the Mavericks applications. When you reverted to Lion I'm assuming you used TimeMachine to restore your applications and data. Doing so resulted in the Mavericks version of Mail, etc getting installed. They won't work with Lion.
Sberman's idea may work. Open TimeMachine and 'go back in time' to when you still had Lion installed on the computer. Then restore the built in applications. That would involve all the built in Apple programs only. It may work. I've never tried it.

  • Applications won't open after upgrade to mavericks

I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks. That went OK. But afterwards some aplications and drivers don't work. For example, when I try to open the driver for my HP flatbed scanner 7400c, it says "you can't open because it may be damaged or incomplete". When I try to open Adobe Acrobat Pro, it says "it can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer(!)", if I try to open Adobe Photoshop CS2, it says "you can't open because Power PC appications are not supported". All these items worked just fine with Snow Leopard. Can anyone advise why this is happening and if there is anything I can do to regain access to these applications. I don't want to upgrade the Adobe apps, because I don't use them enough to justify the cost, and there are no new drivers for the HP scanner... it's old enough that HP has discontinued maintenance on it.

Or, in addition to Eric's knowledgeable information: partition your hard drive (or add an external drive) and install Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta checked; and, IMHO, Quicktime 7, too) into it and use the "dual-boot" system to switch between Snow Leopard and Mavericks as needed.
Here is a recent post I assembled that describes your situation in more detail:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions if they are available, or find alternative software that will open your data files, modify them and save them;
    4.  Install Snow Leopard Server (with Rosetta) into Parallels or VMWare Fusion.  Apple is now selling Snow Leopard Server for only $19.99 + sales tax & shipping; call 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753).    This solution will give you concurrent use of your PowerPC applications and access to Lion or Mt. Lion.

Your HP driver issue may be a bit more complex.  Try Apple's free Image Capture application.  Also, research HP support forum.  Quite honestly, when my HP scanner/printer died and HP told me "tough luck; we'll give you a discount on a new one," I purchased an Epson all-in-one instead!

  • My iPhoto won't open after reverting from mavericks to mountain lion! HELP!!

I recently upgraded to mavericks & quickly discovered that protools was not compatible with the new OS.. so i called apple & they suggested i back up my files & completely restore my computer so I could return to mountain lion..afterward i realized my ilife was no longer in my applications & had use the applications cd that came with my computer to upload ilife. now when i go to use iphoto it says " You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto." & forces me to quit. I dont see any ipdates for iphoto & at this point dont know what to do!! please help!

Older version of iPhoto cannot open libraries that have been created or opened with later versions.
You can downgrade the library to 9.4.3 by following this iPLM tutorial: Fat Cat Software - iPhoto Library Manager Help - Downgrading a library to an earlier version of iPhoto

However, as you have been told, normally Windows executable files cannot be opened or used on Macs.

  • Applications won't open after software update

after i installed an automatic software update on my iBook G4, and did the restart, several applications won't open such as Safari, iTunes, iChat. I tried to reinstall the software update, but that won't open either. it just jumps up and down like normal, and then won't open. after i try again, it jumps only once. what the heck is happening??? and i'm not very computer smart so dumb it up for me

Hello, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.

  • Applications won't open after Quicktime Update...and fix won't work!

    Hello,
I'm having the same problem as many others: after the recent Quicktime update most of my applications won't open.
I've followed the instructions from Apple at
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306043
However, when I do the "sudo" prebinding thing, I get this:
update_prebinding: error: dependent dylib is not prebound
    update_prebinding: error 256 running updateprebindingcore
    Any ideas?! Thanks!

  • Some applications won't open after updating to OS 10.8.5

I am running the Mountain Lion on a 2009 Macbook Air. I just did an update to 10.8.5 and now some of my applications won't open. A few of the appications that no longer run are Chrome, iPhoto and all Microsoft applications.
I tried uninstalling an reinstalling the apps but that did nothing, I also tried creating a new user account to see if the problem persisted in there and it did. I then tried removing my caches folder from Library which also fixed nothing. I then tried booting it in safe mode and the applications successfully opened in there.
I obviously can't just boot my Macbook up in safe mode whenever I need to use it so if anyone knows how this problem could be solved? They were all functioning normally before I did the most recent update of OS.
I have tried repairing the disk permissions but that resulted in no change also. I do not have the start up disk for Mountain Lion so reinstalling the OS is not possible, nor is booting from disk.
I'm in my final year of college, in the middle of my final year project I REALLY need this fixed.

When I try to open iPhoto, Unity, Chrome or a few others it gives me the same error each time. "iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X"
But that doesn't make sense because I just updated the OS and all my applications are up to date also. I've tried reinstalling, no joy though.

  • Applications Won't Open After Charging/Updating iPod

I downloaded several applications to my iPod Touch from the App store on my iPod. Then, I charged my iPod on my computer, downloaded the latest iPod update, and now the applications won't open on my iPod. When I press the application button, it goes to that app's opening screen and then goes right back to my iPod's main screen. What's the deal? Thanks!

This problem just appeared on my son's iPod Touch. I reset the iPod to it's factory settings. I did NOT restore back to my saved settings. When it was restored, I installed each downloaded application one at a time until I discovered which one was corrupting the operating system.

  • Some apps won't open after OS X Mavericks update

After the update to OS X Mavericks, some apps won't open on my macbook pro.  That include things like preview, boot camp assistant, from what I've tried so far. When I click on those from applications menu or from the spotlight search, the icon appear on the dock very briefly(like 1 sec) and nothing happened after that. Based on the internet search, I tried the Disk permissions repair and didn't work. Any suggestions? Thanks

  • Applications won't open after error in a update using a Apple G4

Apple G4 wont open applications, it says application switcher error or error type 3, everthing used to work until when updating the mac a error accured it restarted, now it won't open an application without saying error type 3, or when it boots a bomb sign with the following message saying application switcher error please restart. does anyone know what i can do or whats happened? i have a boot disk which isn't the offical apple cd as i cannot find it or find a place where i could get one from if anyone knows where i could get one from that would be most helpful!!
    Thanks.

    haydn,
It sounds like you are talking about Application Switcher from system 6, twenty five years ago.  If you are using system 9 and you happened to have other systems on your hard drive, the computer could get confused with what to do becausse it sees older software that the processor can not handle.
I looked at a map of England and did not recognize any cities that would have a Mac user group.  If you google and find a user group near you, the best thing to do would be to find a Boot CD, put it in, restart while holding down the C key and see if you can clean up your drive.
Otherwise, ebay has boot CDs listed from time to time.  This may look tempting:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/iBook-G3-Install-cds-x7-10-2-Jaguar-OS-9-2-2-OS-8-/2207859 53727?pt=UK_Computing_Apple_Mac_Accessories&hash=item3367de4bbf
But, here is the catch.  The disks look like they are grey and not the universal install CDs.  If one of the CDs is not for your exact model of computer, be sure and look for a CD that is white with an orange 9 on it.

  • Iphoto won't open after changing from os10.5 to os10.4

    hello there
last night i reinstalled os10.4. i have been running leopard, but a program that i want to use is not yet compatible with it.
after installing it, it put all of my documents/files in a folder called 'previous system' on my hard drive. i then moved all the files back to their 'proper' folders (i.e. itunes, documents etc)
i moved the iphoto library and put it in my 'pictures' folder, but for some reason now iphoto won't open..it just bounces once in the dock and then nothing happens....
can anyone help? i've got some really precious photos in my library, and i'd be really gutted if i have lost them...

  • Iphoto won't open after upgrade to Mavericks

After upgrading to Mavericks a few wks ago I am having an issue with iphoto.  It did an auto update after upgrading to Mavericks, but now it has a circle with a line through it (blocked).  The pop up window says cannot open iphoto because it may be damaged or incomplete.

Delete it and download from the App Store.

  • Image won't open after copy from lr 3 to ps3

    hello,
ps cs3  won't open an image after i select copy or use original from LR 3 3.5 /camera raw 6.5.
if i select open with LR adjustments (first choice at top) image will open.
i'm guessing this has something to do with the version of camera raw??
    thanks, Owen

Ok, i did some testing and here's what i came up with. I use both the d200 and d700.
all files are .nef's. the files of the d700 open in all 3 options from LR3.
there are some photos from d200 that open with all 3 options as well, however i found that in another series of photos with the d200 when i open the nef, do changes, and hit save, it doesn't reimport, it puts it in the folder as .tiff but doens't bring it back into LR
i can import the .tiff  back into LR3 but once it's imported my only option is to open with LR changes.
This is a bit strange?? two different shooting sessions, all in .nef one opens and reimports as .tif and the others don't.

  • PDF files won't open after upgrade from 9 to 10 or 11

After upgrading from Reader 9 to Reader 10, I lost the ability to open PDF files on my Win 7 laptop.  Even the icons became blank white blocks. I reinstalled Reader 9 and it all worked as usual. In trying Reader 11, it happened again.  Any thoughts?

Thank you for your reply. Allow me to clarify.
After installing Reader 10 or 11, the icons for PDFs on my desktop changed from the typical PDF icon to a blank white icon like when the extension of a file has been changed or omitted. Double clicking the icon no longer opens the PDF file. Yes, Reader opens but I no longer was able to open any preexisting PDF files using the new version of Reader. I did try changing away from protected mode to no avail.
I do not have a screen shot as I have downgraded to Reader 9. I have scanned thoroughly for malware and viruses and none have been found.
Thank you again. I look forward to your further comments.
