Applications won't show in finder?

Hi,
I want to delete a couple of applications on my macbook pro. However, when I open a new finder window and go to 'applications' it's like the folder is empty?
When I try to access the applications through my touchpad-shortcut there's no problem. I can see all of them but I can't delete any of them from there.
Why won't they show in finder? I'm completely puzzled.
/S

So you create a new Finder window and click on the Applications folder in the Sidebar:
...you don't see ANY applications in that folder?
If you use Spotlight to search for a specific application, is the first hit the application? Can you follow the path to that folder?
Curious,
Clinton

  • Applications won't show in dock?

My applications won't show in dock when I'm using them, for example, I'm using imovie and vuze now and they will not appear in dock unlike in Lion. Is this something apple has introduced in mountain lion? They open when I select them from spotlight but they won't show up in dock.
Is there a fix for this?

I had a similar issue and I went to System Preferences > Dock, and I unchecked each check box that appears at the bottom. Then I restarted. Then I check the boxes that I had previously checked. This worked for me, I hope it will for you, too.

  • Photos won't show in Finder

I have a late 2013 13" MacBook Pro Retina using Yosemite.
In Finder, under pictures, my iPhoto library won't show pictures. It says there's 12GB of photos, but it won't show the photos. When I click on the iPhoto Library, it will open the iPhoto app and the photos will show, but again, it won't show pictures in Finder. I use to be able to see my photos in Finder.
It all started when I went to System Preferences and started clicking things under the Sharing tab.
After this, I noticed I wasn't able to see my photos in Finder. I followed another thread that said to: press control and click on iPhoto library, then click on Show Package Contents, then click on Original folder; however, when I did went through this process, I didn't have a folder that said Original, so I don't know what to do. Please Help me!!

What Finder window? Are these images in iPhoto?
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Audio CD's won't show in Finder, Disk Utility or iTunes

The last few months represent a downward spiral for importing music or audiobooks on CD. If I pop in a dad CD or DVD the Finder immediately shows it on the desktop. Same with movie DVD's and blank media. But put in an audio disk and its like Mac OS 10.5 doesn't know what to do. It mounts the disk, shows it in the finder and iTunes for a half second before it disappears. The disk is still in the drive but not showing anywhere so I open disk utility which takes several minutes to load, or if its already open, will give me the spinning beach ball for 3-5 minutes. Then it usually shows the CD is there but unmounted. I tell it to mount it. Sometimes it does but takes several more minutes to show in the Finder, other times is mounts and then unmounts again as fast as the first time. Sometimes the finder will freeze up for several minutes. Frustrating and confusing. The drive is good, was recently replaced and as you can see, it works fine with other media. I've played with system prefs regarding CD's & DVD's, as well as iTunes prefs when a disk is inserted. No change.
Any solutions or posts with similar issues?

Sorry for not getting back to you before.
Since it's only a problem in one account, there's a bad file in your account that is causing the problem. Most often these are bad preference files, which are found in your home/Library/Preferences folder.
But in your case I'm not sure which file it could be.
You can narrow it down by moving stuff out of there in blocks, and see if the problem is fixed. If not, move them back, move some other stuff out, and try it again. Repeat this until you find the bad file and trash it.

  • Applications won't show after hiding

I posted this problem with iCal several weeks ago, but got no reply. Since then, I've found that it also happens wirh System Preferences, Address Book and Dictionary. I haven't had a problem with Mail, Safari, or with any non-Apple applications.
    The problem:
--  I use the app, let's sy iCal, then press cmd-H to hide it when I'm done.
--  Time passes. I use 3-4 different applications.
--  I click on the app (iCal) in my dock ... and nothing happens.
--  I click again. Still nothing.
--  I go to Launchpad, and click on the app's icon. Nothing happens.
--  But ... if I click on the icon in the dock again, the app unhides, but it still doesn't come to the front. I have to hide the other apps to see it.
Here are some details in case that helps:
--  I sleep often, sometimes with a "sleep" command, but mostly just closing the cover.
--  I restart maybe once a week. No more.
--  I normally have Mail, iCal, Safari, System Preferences, Address Book, Word, Excel, PPT, Acrobat Reader, and Stickies open.
--  iPhoto, Skype, or FileMaker might also be open.
The problem is intermittent. Sometimes everything works fine. Sometimes it doesn't. I haven't detected any patterns.
I have Ad Blocker installed in Safari, but the problem pre-dated that.
I've got a MacBook Pro 13" running at 2.26 GHz and 4 GB memory. I'm running Lion 10.7.1. The problem also occured with 10.7.0.

I had a similar issue and I went to System Preferences > Dock, and I unchecked each check box that appears at the bottom. Then I restarted. Then I check the boxes that I had previously checked. This worked for me, I hope it will for you, too.

  • Application hidden by Finder won't show itself again?

Short version of my problem: an application that was open and running, and was hidden by me via the Finder, now won't show again. It's icon in the dock still shows the little black triangle, so I'm assuming that it's still open and running, but is this true? And how can I get the application to show itself again?
Now for the details: the application in question is Bryce 6.0, a fairly new app but I've had no problems with it up to now. I've also been using Bryce since version 4, about 5 years, so am quite familiar with it. For those who don't know, it's a low-end 3D landscape program. It's one of those apps that automatically take over your full screen, so if you ever need to access the Finder for anything, you have to 'Hide Bryce' via the Finder menu. I've done this many times before with no problems.
I'm currently rendering a complicated 3D scene, and it's going to be a long render, lasting several days. This is for a commercial project I'm working on, for which I have a deadline. Time is tight, so I really need to know NOW how to fix this. I need to know if the application is still rendering, because if it's not, I need to restart the render. I'd rather not do this if I can help it, as it would mean I've just lost 2 days of rendering time.
I suspect that the rendering may just be so system intensive that it can't find the power to reveal itself, but I may be wrong, and I still need to see what's happening anyway.
No other application seems affected, other items in my dock open OK.
I've tried clicking on the icon in the dock, and when the little window pops up, clicking on 'Show': nothing happens. I've tried going to the Finder menu and clicking on 'Show All', and it doesn't show. I've no other apps open (except Safari right now, of course): I've tried closing everything else, but it hasn't helped.
If I restart, I lose the render I'm doing, which is a MAJOR setback. I won't be able to continue from where I left off, but will have to start again from the very beginning.
    Can anyone please help?
I'm using a PowerMac G4 Digital Audio 733MHz, with an extra 100GB hard drive, 1.25GB RAM, and an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB graphics card. OSX 10.4.7

Hi Michael, thanks for getting back to me, I appreciate it!
    Recent hangs = 0.
Hiding the Finder/hiding others doesn't reveal Bryce. I just see my desktop.
I can kind of understand how it might be using too much power to reveal itself, which seems to make a weird kind of sense. But on the other hand, it had no problem showing itself before I hid it. If I hadn't needed to do some searching in the Finder for some other files, I'd never have hidden it...

How do I add my new iPhone4s to iCloud's "Find my iPhone"? I followed the iCloud instructions and turned on Macbook Pros' system prefs to "find my mac", turned on iPhone4s's "location services" and set up iCloud, etc. In the "Find my iphone" tab of my new iCloud account (on my Macbook Pro) my iPhone4s still won't show—but my macbook does show. I had my iPhone4s set up at the phone store (2 days ago) and It receives gmail, my contacts and calender entries, the weather, etc. I installed the "Find iPhone" app from iTunes on the iPhone4s, synched to iTunes, even reset the phone, but the only device that gets located is my Macbook Pro. I can send a "sound" message to my Mac (and the Mac recieves it) but unable to see the iPhone4s from my Mac, let alone send any message. Any suggestions to get the iPhone4s device to appear in iCloud?
Thank you in advance for your help.

OK, I figured it out...I deleted the iCloud account off my iPhone (Settings, iCloud, Delete Account), and then added iCloud back in (Settings, iCloud, SignIn)....and then my email (iCloud) and "Find my phone" features worked! Nice!!!!

  • After migrating an account to my MacBook Air, it still has its old settings and won't let me find the Applications folder - how do I fix this?

So I just migrated (using the Assistant) my Admin account from my old Powerbook G4 to my MacBook Air (used) , but now it's disregarding its new Trackpad settings (such as scrolling and double finger tapping, etc.) It also won't let me find my Applications folder (I used Finder), whereas the Admin account can, but see back on my old laptop I this account was an Admin. I feel like there's something written that's telling it to behave like it did on the Powerbook. I don't know - me no professional, yo, that's why I'm here. NOTE: Before I migrated, I'd started using the Admin account on here; for example, I signed in with my appleid since I figured the accounts could be merged - guess not. A family member's been helping me, but I wanted feedback from the forum.
    Thanks, guys!

What exactly is the error you get?
How are you attempting this copy?
There's almost certainly a way to accomplish what you want to do (probably best from the terminal possibly copying the entire user dir and fixing up permissions, etc.) but I'm not sure you will end up with the results you want.  There are plists in the preferences dir that you probably don't want to copy over (e.g., many of the com.apple.* prefererences).  And many apps also create more than just plists.  There may be stuff in Application Support, LaunchAgents, Internet Plug-Ins, etc.).  And this would be stuff you do want to copy.  Bottom line is it is not a trivial exercise which is probably why the system is slapping your hands for even attempting it

  • HELP! External hard drive won't show up in finder!

Last night, I was updating my macbook (from August 2008, still runs on leopard) and it needed to restart. I forgot to eject my LaCie Porsche 1tb external hard drive first and, when it rebooted, I got the error of death (aka "disk was not ejected..."). When connected to the USB port, the drive lights up, I can hear it spinning, but it won't show up in finder and I can't see it in Disk Utility to repair it (after the first error of death, the computer wouldn't even acknowledge that I had the drive plugged in). I've tried plugging it into the different USB ports and even on a different macbook, but no luck in getting the computer to recognize it long enough to use Disk Utility or DiskWarrior. Any tips on how I can get my macbook to read the drive again?

If the external hard drive is not showing up in Disk Utility when connected to two or more different computers, then the problem is with the hard drive, it is broken. Get a new one.

Need help to find location of iPad using find my iPad app.. Sound was activated this morning but it won't give me the location.. How can I find it??

    Hello there Kylie,
It sounds like your iPad is not showing in Find my iPad when you check it. Take a look at this info from the following article named:
iCloud: Troubleshooting Find My iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4006
Device does not appear in Find My iPhone
    This can occur if:
The date on your device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch) is incorrect. Choose Settings > General > Date & Time to check and set the date.
Your device is not up-to-date. It needs to be running iOS 5 or later.
Your iCloud account is not configured on your device. Choose Settings > iCloud and enter your iCloud account information.
You have multiple iCloud accounts entered on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Only one account can have Find My iPhone turned on at a given time. Log in to Find My iPhone with your other iCloud accounts until your device is listed.
There's a scheduled maintenance or another issue affecting Find My iPhone. Check the System Status site to see if this is the case.
Your device has lost network connectivity. If you have access to your device, and it appears to have an active Internet connection, enable and then disable Airplane mode. If you continue to have issues, turn the device off and back on.
Find My Mac can only locate your Mac if it is connected to the Internet via a known Wi-Fi network. If your Mac is connected to the Internet only by an Ethernet cable, Find My Mac will not be able to locate your Mac.
Device appears in Find My iPhone, but is offlineThis can occur if:
Your device is powered off, such as when the battery has run out. Note that the remaining battery for the device, if it's connected to the Internet, displays in the upper-right corner of the information pane of the selected device. You can still play a sound on, send a message to, issue a lock request, or initiate an erase of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The command will be received after the device is turned on and regains its Internet connection.
Your iPhone’s cellular service has been terminated by your wireless service provider. If you contacted your service provider to report your device lost or stolen before locating your phone, and they deactivated your SIM card or account, this would be expected. If this is the case, you may no longer be able to locate, display a message on, or erase your iPhone. For more information, read about what to do if your device is lost or stolen.
Your iPad, iPod Touch, or Mac is asleep and not connected to a known Wi-Fi network. You will still be able to request an erase, send a message to display and lock your device, or request that a sound be played. The command will be processed when your device is awakened and connected to the Internet.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling
