Apply adjustments for highlights/midtones/shadows to the entire photo?

Hi,
I'm wondering whether it is possible to apply adjustments like sharpening, contrast etc. only for highlights (or midtones or shadows) to the entire photo. Applying it with a brush is no problem, but the brush size is limited for that and it's really cumbersome to brush it onto the entire photo.
I thouhgt it might work to apply the adjustment to a small part of the photo and then invert it, but then it applies it to all shadows, midtones and highlights again.
Does anyone know an easier way to do that?

I do not. Luminance range auto-masking is available only to brushes.
I had assumed this limitation was put in place because the performance when applying adjustments to all the pixels that are in a particular luminance range was too slow, but then I realized that Curves and Levels do exactly that. Perhaps it is because they are limited to the luminance channel.
You options are few, but not halting. You can create a brush mask that covers the entire Image. This is slow and frustrating (computers are un-sweating slaves; you should be able to order "Do this until it's done", where the decision whether or not to proceed is yours, not the application's). Or you can use an external graphics program such as Photoshop that allows you to create an image mask based on luminance and apply a modification to the pixels that come through the mask.
Note that for modifications that are based on groups of pixels (such as sharpening), you will have (in theory if not in practice) unintended effects at the edges of the mask.

OK I know Lightroom 3 is currently available as a Beta version and is not complete and there may be more features to come.
But
Wouldn't it be nice in the develop module to set the point at which you get clipping warnings for highlight and shadow.
I ask this as a lot of my work goes straight out for repro, and it would be usefull to be able to set the highlight to say 90-95% and the shadow to about 15-20%.
OK I know I can run a tool over the image and see what the percentage is, but it would be a lot esier if I could set my own limits and just watch for the red and blue "blobs"

I too find the FTP server implementation to be sorely lacking in OS X Server. There is no option to share out only the designated FTP root folder without showing the other share points. It seems impossible to lock down subdirectories to specific users with letting them see the contents of the root directory. Maddening!
I'm looking at other FTP server options. Rumpus comes highly recommended, but I also just found CrushFTP which also looks intriguing, especially its option to integrate with LDAP - something that Rumpus does not do. CrushFTP is also significantly less expensive.

Image correction question about Highlights/Midtones/Shadows

I'd like to be able to adjust the Highlights/Midtones/Shadows. Is there an effect that is built into FCP that will give me this kind of control. I looked at the 3-way color corrector but it seemed to adjust color shift.

Color is not all that difficult and the possibilities are HUGE !!! May take a few attempts to get there, but you'll be amazed.
Select a clip in your timeline.
Go to File and select send to Color
Color will open
Choose where you want to store your project and name it.
Now, your selected clip should be displayed at the top left of your screen
Start playing with the first room and it's curves and wheels and feel the experience
Click on room 2 and here is where you can start creating BIG time GRADING

Usually Acrobat has linked to PhotoShop to do the photo editing. You might check the updates for Acrobat and PhotoShop.

With iMessage, it is meant to show up on all your iOS devices and Mac. If you do not want them to go across all your devices, then you will need to turn off iMessage on your iPad and Mac Pro.

IPhoto downloads the entire Photo Stream every time it starts. How can I stop this? Can iPhoto only download the photos on Photo Stream that are new only?

iPhoto downloads the Photo Stream. No problem.
I quit the program, turn the computer off.
Next day, I turn the computer on and start iPhoto, and it downloads the entire Photo Stream library again. It just takes time for iPhoto to download the entire library every day. Can't it just remember the pictures it downloaded and just download the new ones?

Both my computers do this. I tried to rebuild my library and even re-installed iphoto, but neither fixes the problem. Very frustrating.

I'd try resetting the pse 12 preferences by going to Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor (Edit)>Preferences>General
and click on Reset Preferences on next launch, then restart pse 12.

Yes, that's the way it works. The target tool is simply a way to pick a colour to modify, but all colours like that one, no matter where they are in the image, will be modified.

Was that i needed a refresh of the photos app i have had every iphone since the beggining and it bored me so when i saw iphotoit seemed that way like a newer way of seeing your photos while having awesome editing tools. The tools are really cool but was hoping it to be less lagy and to actuatlly replace the photos app At least that is how i saw it

Migration Assistant will keep your iPhoto library organized exactly as it is - all it is doing is moving your iPhoto Library package file from one Mac to the other. Where did you read otherwise?

My Elements 9 cropping tool just stopped working...crops the entire photo.

My Elements 9 cropping tool just started cropping the entire image away today. Just got an Adobe air update last night. This is nothing I have done. All that's left after using my crop tool is a .jpg symbol. Please help.

First try resetting the tool. If that doesn't work delete the settings file by holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift as you start PSE and answering the prompt to delete.

Adobe Acrobat. Change "Copy selected text into Highlight, Cross-Out, ..." also for highlights made before changing the setting

I am looking for a solution to apply the "Copy selected text into Highlight, Cross-Out, and Underline comment pop-ups" setting to highlights that I made before I changed this setting.
Someone wrote a batch for this which costs 60 dollar and this seems to do what I am looking for: Custom-made Adobe Scripts: Acrobat -- Retroactively Copy Highlighted Text into Comments
Where can I find Adobe's solution for this problem? I do not want to buy external batches for a professional software suit.
I expect that this is a common problem for people who start to organize a large literature base with many pdfs and must keep track of highlighted text. I was not previously aware of the "Copy selected..."setting, but I need to change it now for all my pdf files to make them compatible with a reference manager that I want to use. New comments are now compatible, but the hundreds(!) of pdfs that I worked through before are not, so copy pasting the highlighted text into comments is not an option.

Just submitted a podcast to i-tunes, when users are dowloaded it, images are only appering for a few seconds not the entire length of the relvant chapter.

Built in garage band with artwork and chapters - saved as an podcast and set live to i-tunes (and checked in quicktime) but once downloaded images only appear for a few seconds.

I subscribed to your podcast and downloaded episode 20 (in iTunes): it plays perfectly normally and the images appear as you would expect. I also dragged it out to the Desktop and opened it in the Quicktime Player and again everything was normal.
The problem you do have is that you have not entered a duration for this and a few other episodes, so that the default 1 second is there. As a result when you play the episode in the Store page (as opposed to subscribing) it only plays the first second.
As to the problem you describe, I can't explain it - there's nothing wrong with the file, so it must be a local issue with your iTunes.
