Apply an effect to all video layers below it?

Hey, all.
Before I ask, let me say that I'm a professional Avid editor cutting on Premiere Pro CS3.
The effect I'm trying to create is a distortion. Basically, I want to make it seem like I'm punching through from the back of the video. But the video in question is made up of four smaller clips lined up like a grid.
So far, I've put transparent video across the top (I will provide a link to a pic of a screen capture), and tried to apply a sphere distortion (just to check it out)....nothing happens. Anything I put on the transparent video (which in my mind should act like filler in the Avid), doesn't affect anything below it.
Soooo...what the point of the transparent video? And any ideas on how to make my punch? Thanks!

Get outtta town! I did not know that.

  • How to apply a fade to all video, not just one element.

Hi. Ignorant here. New to FCP X and pretty new to video editing.  I'm doing green screen stuff and I want to fade everything up from black. Trying to match the speed of the transitions is tough.  I'm assuming there's a function to control the whole video component, not just per element...'Little help?
    Thanks.

Thanks Tom.  Yep, that works.  That was my next go-to but I'm reticent to create compound clips as I'd imagine there's a lack of individual control at that point.  Perhaps that just makes one plan one's workflow. I was hoping there was another way but hey, compound clips are easy to work with and can always be separated when you need to manipulate them individually.  Thanks much.

  • How do I apply Smart Filters to video layers?

Hello! This is my first time making an animated GIF in Photoshop, so I'm a little frustrated. I've looked all over the web and on the Adobe site on how to apply filters throughout all video layers. All resources tell me to "convert the video layer into a Smart Object and apply filters, which will carry throughout the other layers." I open up my GIF file and convert my very first layer/frame into a Smart Object and apply my Reduce Noise filter; when I do this, the filter only applies to the first layer/frame and not for the other 187 layers/frames. Can anyone explain what I'm doing wrong?

put levels on which you want to apply the filter, you will see them in the time line as a group ten apply filter, you can also adgust them all in time line...

  • How do I apply the blur filter to all my layers at the same time?

Hi I'm working on a background for a web page and I want to try how different filters are going to affect all the layers. Is it possible to apply a filter to all the layers without flattening the file first? Thanks very much,

    Hello!
There is no need to flatten the file, but you can create a layer that merges all the content of the image, and apply the filter on that layer.
Target the topmost layer, by holding the Option and . (period) keys, then create a merged copy by holding down Command Shift Option E.

Adjustment Layer staying white and won't apply its effects to layering video?
I was using adjustment layers for color correcting and now my adjustment layer is just staying white and I've looked at so many forums and i can't find what I'm doing wrong...
I reset my preferences, I made a new project I'm clueless.

That is After Effects but ..try openig the composition window (TAB)
You are looking at the AL in Footage Window.

  • Appling effect to all layers

Not sure how to go about this.. In Photoshop I would merge all layers but I still want to edit some. At the end of my clip I'd like to add the Radial Fast Blur as a transition. The problem is that I have a lot of layers and the effect applies to just one. Besides saving the composition as a movie clip and applying it to that, is there another way to do this?

I think that an adjustment layer will do what you're after.
You also might consider precomposing the layers and applying the effect to the precomposition layer.
BTW, if you're new to After Effects, I recommend starting here.

  • Apply adjustment to affect all layers when xport layers to files

    Hi.
Have a set of sequence images opened with Bridge and placed in photoshop as individual layers. I´ve croped the image and
applyed som adjusments eg. curves etc. Now i want to save the layers as files from the file-scripts having the layer adjustments affecting

Well, you don’t need it anymore, but I still gave a Script that saves the pixel-layers as separate files with the Adjustment Layers flattened in a try; only for psd, though, so no format-selection.
If you want to give it a try …
    // create psd-copies of  all pixel-layers with adjustment layers applied to them;
    // thanks to xbytor for the regexp;

Imovie is limited to its import formats and does not allow for storing video in any rawformat.  Which means all videos will contain lossy compression applied to the video….with no way to edit full format video.  Is this statement true? Does iMovie support HD 1080p @ 60 fps?

    Iggy826 wrote:

    yes and no!
using the intended Import from Camera routines, iM converts automatically in its very own AppleIntermediateCodec. so, answer is yes.
    but …
    a) Apple claims , aic is non-lossy intermediate codec. working with proRes in FCPX taught me, there are even less non-lossy-ness codecs
    b) iM offers an Archive feature, which is basically a simple Finder/copy operation which 'clones' your SDcards content into some folder on your harddrive; e.g. you can later use these untouched  'raws' in another editor such as FCPX. so, answer is no.
    c) when you 'override' the import routines by manually re-wrapping mts into a mov container, iM handles the 'native' h264s ... so, answer is no.
    d) adding any effect, transition etc. reduces any interlaced source to 540p. (if you're working with 720p source, res is kept) … so, answer is yes. or, in 720p case, no.
    < Johnny Depp's voice >… savvy?
Does iMovie support HD 1080p @ 60 fps?
    via Import from Camera? No.
via re-wrapped mts>>mov? I was told yes, some say no.
one thing to be kept in mind when talking about these 'issues':
iM, this 12€, is meant as a CONSUMER toy tool.
    it supports AVCHD vers1 (=no 1080/60p, no >24Mbps, no 3D).
fingers crossed, we'll see soon some iM/QT/FCPX update for support of AVCHD v2 ........
the main consumer devices are within the specs, iM supports.
using professional equipments makes usage of professional software (FCPX, AP) optional.
    sorry for lengthy answer.

  • I'm having a problem in FCP7 with all video transitions. Every transition has a rolling flicker throughout the effect. What is causing this?

I recently upgraded to FCP7 from FCP6. I am now having an issue in playback with all video transitions. When I add a transition to my video it does not consistently play smoothly. I now appears to have an old "film" like flicker rolling through the effect. Our video was shot on a dslr and brought into FCP with compressor as a prores 422 file. We use magic bullet for our coloring effects which are in place on this video. When I was working on the project in FCP6 I did not have this problem. When the project was complete we upgraded to FCP7. The client has now come back to us wanting additional footage. So I opened the old project up into FCP7 and checked yes to all format updates to meet with FCP7 guidelines. So far this is the only problem I've encountered. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello!
For me it looks like conflict with field order (upper, lower - interlaced).
Please, check Your sequence settings, maybe it should be set to "field order NONE" if Your source is progressive.
    Next thing You could check:
in Your timeline with bad transitions look into "Effecs tab" - maybe FCP 7 added "shift field filter +/-1" after opening FCP 6 project.
In general - try to keep sequence settings same as source settings.

  • CS4 - Unwanted ghosting effect showing up in all videos - Similiar to an onion skin

I'm having some sort of weird ghosting effect on all my videos in Premiere Pro CS4. It's similiar to an onion skin that shows the previous frame. It shows in the timeline preview and when I render out the video. I've never had this problem before until just a few days ago. It even shows up in old premiere files that I made weeks ago that didn't have this problem at the time. I've even tried working on a different computer using a different Premier CS4 and had the same problem.
Is anyone else experiencing this or have I gone crazy?

The videos are 30fps and so is the project.
Are you sure of that? That's definitely frame blending, which occurs in two instances: when a clip has been explicitly time-altered (e.g. from 100% to 33.33%), or when a clip's frame rate does not match your sequence frame rate. For instance, your clips might actually be 30fps, but your sequence is probably 29.97fps--a minor difference, but enough to cause the problem you're seeing.
Confirm the true frame rate of each of these, and if they're different, you can put the clips in the correct sequence, or you can interpret your clips to match the sequence--a change of 30 to 29.97fps is not going to cause any weird slow downs.

Irregardless of the Premiere Elements version...
I do not believe you are doing anything wrong. I have not found it possible to copy a Timeline clip to which Time Remapping has been applied and use Paste Effects and Adjustments to other selected clips on the Timeline to achieve the same fast or slow motion for more than one clip at a time. For one thing the duration of the Time Remapped clip is different than those that have not gone through Time Remapping.
And, you cannot select more than 1 clip at a time to be taken into the Time Remapping workspace.
Also, special considerations need to exist for Pan and Zoom Tool for its pan and zoom effect applied to more than one photo at a time.

I will think about this some more. But, at this moment, it appear to be it is what it is.

  • Importing .AI file (multiple artboards) into After Effects imports all layers?

Okay, so I've been trying to figure out this issue that I am having but the problem is a bit wordy to explain.
What I want to do: Import an Illustrator file, that is a single artboard from a multiple artboard file into After Effects and ONLY import the layers from that artboard.
What is happening: Artboard 1 with shape 1, artboard 2 with shape 2, and artboard 3 with shape 3. When I export them (Save as --> .ai --> Save each artboard as a separate file), in .ai the layers are correct (ie only shape 1 on artboard 1), but when I import the .ai into AE, artboard 1 has shape 1, shape 2 and shape 3 (they are all separate layers).
How does Illustrator determine what is or isn't in an artboard? I am seeing the other layers but they are only 1x1 in AE.
I am using Illustrator CS6 and AE CS6 and I've tried it both on Mac and PC, and haven't gotten it to work. The weird thing is that it WAS working correctly before.

I have (hypothetically), a three layer file each with a rectangle. Each rectangle is on a separate artboard. When I save each artboard as a separate .ai file (ie "Save as --> save each artboard as separate file"), in each .ai file, only the layers in each artboard are in the separate ai files:
artboard_01.ai only has layer with rect 1,
artboard_02.ai only has layer with rect 2,
artboard_03.ai only has layer with rect 3,
This is good, BUT when I import into After Effects, all three layers appear in each comp generated from the imported .ai files
comp of artboard_01.ai has layer with rect 1, layer for rect 2 (no content), and layer for rect 3 (no content).
comp of artboard_02.ai has layer with rect 1(no content), layer for rect 2, and layer for rect 3 (no content).
comp of artboard_03.ai has layer with rect 1(no content), layer for rect 2 (no content), and layer for rect 3.

After applying update my apple tv2 will randomly go to a black screen that lasts for a few seconds. When it gets back to normal after a few seconds it acts like the video never stopped since its farther along in the timeline. This happens with all video content wether its from Netflix or streaming from my iTunes library

You might try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for a 30 seconds. If that doesn't help try using another HDMI cable.

  • Apply image to layers below target, or merge to new layer

I'd like an option to apply image from source: "layers below the target layer", instead of the current options of merged or choosing a layer.
    or
possibly a more flexible and faster method may be to choose a selection of contiguous layers and add a "merge to new layer" menu choice. This would merge the selected layers and flatten to a new layer above the selected layers.
This would be convenient for interim builds of layers and retaining layered work.
......  yes there are many ways to do this currently, this is a feature request.

    Hi Chris
Sorry for the delay a bunch of stuff landed on my desk.

no worries, you're a very helpful person around here. There's nothing really specific, a fun new features areas should be exciting, and there's little benefit to anyone posting ( except for egos ) so I think I'll hang around the other areas that are focused on fixing problems.
