Apply image to layers below target, or merge to new layer

I'd like an option to apply image from source: "layers below the target layer", instead of the current options of merged or choosing a layer.
or
possibly a more flexible and faster method may be to choose a selection of contiguous layers and add a "merge to new layer" menu choice. This would merge the selected layers and flatten to a new layer above the selected layers.
This would be convenient for interim builds of layers and retaining layered work.
......  yes there are many ways to do this currently, this is a feature request.

Hi Chris
Sorry for the delay a bunch of stuff landed on my desk.
>I don’t want to annoy you, but could you be more specific?
no worries, you're a very helpful person around here. There's nothing really specific, a fun new features areas should be exciting, and there's little benefit to anyone posting ( except for egos ) so I think I'll hang around the other areas that are focused on fixing problems.

  • How do i adjust layers below a Shadows/Highlights smart object layer

    Hi
In Photoshop CC I have created a number of layers for smart tonal adjustments.
I then created a Smart object Shadow/Highlight layer base upon a copy of all layers below.
However my layers below can no longer be altered as the Shadow/Highl;ight layer is a copy of them.
Is there away to allow me to stack the layers so that i can still make adjustments to my layers below after have created a Shadow/Highlight layer.
    Seems impossible.

You can stack SOs pretty much for ever.  Just right click the SO with the Shadow/Highlight adjustment, and turn it into a Smart Object.  Then you can add a layer mask to make parts of the underlying layers visible.  But you mainly need to manage your workflow to avoid this situation, or use the SO as a new Background Layer, and carry on working from there.   That is how I tend to work.
Incidentally, as you have CC, do consider using Camera RAW as a filter, on a SO layer, in preference to Shadow/Highlight.  S/H was always portrayed as Photoshop magic, but in actual fact it produces nasty artefacts and makes an image look unreal and plastic.  When the Camera RAW engine was updated with the Process Version 2012 (PV2012) with version 7.#, it took a big step forward, and allowed drastic use of the sliders without the nasty artefacts this would have cause with earlier versions.  AFAIK S/H was not updated, and IMO should have a little skull and crossbones next to it in the Image > Adjust menu.  Or better still, removed altogether.

  • Can you add layers below a Composite Layer?

Once you create a composite layer at the top of your layer stack w. Option-click on "Merge Visible" in the Layer Panel Menu, is that new layer the only layer that now shows (represents) the image? For instance, if another adjustment layer is added below it, and the Background layer is the only image layer, will the effect of that adjustment be visible? Or do I need to delete the composite layer and create a new one to include the new adjustment layer?
The reason I ask has to do with an illustration (below) I came across from one of Mark Johnson's old NAPP tutorials (Total Control Glowing Montage). In his tutorial "Layer 1" was created as a composite layer of the Background Layer and "Levels 1" which had a Smart Filter applied to it. Then the two "Levels 1" copy layers were added last to fine-tune the effect of the Levels 1 adjustment. Notice they are BELOW the composite layer. Does this work? Thanks.

    conroy2009 wrote:
Yes, very much so. Multiply is a darkening effect (unless working in 32-bit float mode with channel values greater than 1) except when multiplying with pure white.
I'm now unsure whether you do want to make the composite before adding two Levels adjustments on top of it, or whether you should be making the multiplying composite as the last stage. Can you post a link to the tutorial?
I no longer have access to the tutorial which I saw last year on the NAPP website. But here are the 5 steps mentioned:
    1. Starting w. a Background layer, create a Levels Adj. layer w. Screen blending mode to overexpose image, "Levels 1."
    2. Create a composite layer and apply a smart filter, Gausian Blur with a Multiply blend mode to darken, "Layer 1."
    3. Preserve highlights by painting on Levels 1 mask with various opacities of black brush.
    4. Open the shadows by duplicating Levels 1 layer, fill mask with black and paint shadow areas w. white brush, "Levels 1 copy."
    5. If shadows are still too dark, repeat previous step by creating an additional duplicate levels layer and painting in shadows again, "Levels 1 copy, copy."
The affect looks great and is why I would like to figure this out. Thanks.

  • Adjustment layers lose effect when merged

This is the look I am trying achieve while the Curves, Levels and the base image are in their own layers.
But when I merge the layers...this is what happens.
What's going on? What am I doing wrong?
I've tried accessing the adjustments in the "Image" tab...same results. I have tried merging a combination of two layers first, it becomes messed up. Is there a way for me to save these three layers together and have my desired results?
    Thanks so much.

I'm curious to hear what people say on this, as it's something I've observed plenty of times, but haven't spent enough time figuring it out to really say I fully understand it.  I usually encounter it when one of the layers has a blending mode applied and the others do not.  I wouldn't have thought that it would occur with just adjustment layers (do yours have a blending mode applied?).  I'm sure that I merge groups frequently with adjustment layers and it usually works.  But as I said, I don't fully understand it, I just know when it occurs to step back and use another method:
My workaround is that I do a stamp visible (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E) of the image I want instead of a merge.  It seems to work, hence I didn't dig anymore into exactly when and what makes this occur.  I'm sure someone has a better solution than mine...

  • Apply Image in LAB Question

I am presently taking the The LAB Frontier course by Dan Margulis at Kelby Training and I am having difficulty with the Apply Image command working the way Dan said it would. I am using CS3 on an PC.
Dan makes extensive use of this command in sharpening and other functions as follows:
    Be in LAB color mode.
Start with a Background layer and duplicate.
    Oversharpen Layer 1.
Have Layer 1 selected and go to Apply Image.
Apply the lower layer Lightness channel to the top layer reducing opacity to 50%.
CHANGE THE MODE TO DARKEN. This is my problem as Darken is not an available choice.
I have tried this on two different PCs with the same unfavorable result. Does anyone have an idea why Darken mode is not available to me?

This is interesting to me because I had never explored "Apply Image". Didn't even know it was there. But playing with it, I was able to invoke ALL of the blend modes in LAB, provided I used the Lightness channel exclusively.
Exclusively means that BOTH target and source are confined to the Lightness channel.
"Target" and "Source" are introduced for flexibility in the Apply Image command. They allow you to blend two layers not necessarily one on top of the other as in the usual blend operation. In Apply Image, the Source acts like the top layer, so it is the layer for which you designate the blend mode.
Here's what to do: Open two images. Put both in LAB mode. For whichever is the target, go to the channels palette and deactivate the a and b channels, leaving only the L channel active. Then invoke Image>Apply Image. In the dialog box that comes up, choose the other open image as the Source and, if it has layers, designate which one you want to use in the blend . Select the L channel. Now select a blend mode for this source. You will find, SURPRISE, that ALL blend modes are availble to you (no longer are some, like Darken or Lighten, grayed out).
Again, what is new to me is that Apply Image affords a convenient way to blend layers from disparate sources rather than being confined to having them in the same image AND one on top of the other. Works well in RGB also, and there you don't have to restrict the channel to access all blend modes. In LAB mode, restricting operations to the Lightness channel in order to access some of the blend modes requires a touchy procedure which, if not followed, leaves these modes still frustratingly grayed out.

  • Option missing to open images as layers in Photoshop.

The option to edit in Photoshop CS4 from Lightroom 4 and return is just fine. However, the option to Open images as layers in Photoshop is grayed out as well as the option to open as Smart Object or Merge.

These other options work differently than the simple "Edit in..".
The method that does work for you, with CS4, is using Photoshop as a standard external editor by means of a "dumb" interaction. LR does all the work of converting the image into a bitmp and then saving it as a TIFF or PSD. It knows just enough about the other program, to tell the operating system to start the program executable and to pass it the file that has already been created. Then it keeps an eye on the file, watching for modifications saved to it by the other application.
The only compatibility needed between the two programs is: that PS (or whatever) can understand a TIFF or a PSD made by LR; and in return, that PS (or whatever) can save a modified file which LR can display.
The extended options you mention, rely on LR getting PS to get ACR to do all the work of conversion, and then in due course, for PS to take care of file creation too, and furthermore, to tell LR which file has been created where. This is partly because several conversions are involved rather than one; conversions made directly into Photoshop's memory space but not yet onto disk; which is ACR territory.
In order for this more complex interaction to happen, LR needs to be talking to a fully-compatible PS and ACR partnership - which it knows will properly read all its adjustments, and include them in the bitmap information. At present, from LR4, that means either Photoshop CS6 with ACR 7.x - or else (as a special concession), Photoshop CS5 with ACR 6.7. Unless one of those two setups is detected, these forms of interaction are greyed out. Sorry

  • How to apply image texture to imported shape

This is regarding applying am image texture to an object.
I am able to apply an image texture to a Sphere.
    Sphere mySphere = new Sphere(1.0f, Sphere.GENERATE_NORMALS | Sphere.GENERATE_TEXTURE_COORDS, 10,appear);
    objRoot.addChild(mySphere);
But when i import a model from a file(.obj), and apply the texture to the imported objects,
the image is not displayed as texture but a color similar to the image is displayed.
How to apply image texture to imported objects?

Mylenium, thanks for your response but unfortunately I'm still missing something here. I have two problems:
    1. I don't understand how to size the logo to only cover a small portion of the golf ball. Because of the other problem I'll describe in 2) below, I simplified my test by trying this on a basic PS sphere. I loaded the logo image into the diffuse texture but it wraps the sphere. I tried editing the texture thinking I could fix it by using Transform scale, but that is greyed out. So, how do I cause the logo to apply to a small portion of the surface (as a traditional golf ball logo would appear)?
    2. Perhaps the bigger issue here is when I attempt to do this with the golf ball 3ds model instead of the PS sphere, the wrapped logo appears to be sitting somewhere between the outer surface of the ball and the inner core. In other words, the wrapped logo has a very sporadic appearance where it shows up in some dimples but not others. It isn't just applying to the surface of the ball. Thinking this might have been a problem with the .3ds model I acquired an .obj golf ball from a different source but it exhibited exactly the same problem.
I'm experienced with PS and 3D in a couple of other programs, but new to 3D in PS. I appreciate your help with this.

  • Photoshop CS4 Channel  Apply Image

Good evening, everybody. I am a beginner of Photoshop and I am really interested in Photoshop.
Here is a big challenge I have met in the "Image>Apply Image..."
As it's shown in the picture, I use the Channel Alpha1 to alter the RGB Compound Channel and the Blending mode is ADD. And I can understand the fundamental of the above operation. Then question occur:
I don't get a full understanding of the Chek Box "Mask..."  and I don't konw what it is used for. And what about some parameters "Image", "Channel", "Layser" about the "Mask..." Can you explain the secret of it to me? It will be much better if you could give me the fundamental or algorithm of it.
I will really appreciate your reply.

    Do you follow some course?
Because in practice this feature seems to hardly get used by most people.
The Apply Image feature is used in fashion portrait retouching when the frequency separation technique is employed. This technique separates texture and color into two layers, which are edited separately. There are several video tutorials showing how it is done, but none of them gets into the details of the Apply Image settings. They just show you what numbers to stick in a few of the boxes. I, too, would like to know more about what those settings do.
An example of one such tutorial is here: http://fstoppers.com/frequency-separation-with-fashion-photographer-retoucher-elena-jasic

  • Merging Layers... naming merged layer

    Computer Platform: Mac OS 10.5
    Photoshop/Lightroom version: Photoshop CS3
    Question:
When I merge several layers, is there a way to control the name it selects to call the new merged layer? For example I have a layer stack consisting from top to bottom: logo, retouching, outlined, shadows, white background. I want to merge the logo, retouching, and outlined layers and keep the shadows, white background layers separate. When I merge the logo, retouching, outlined; it calls the merged layer logo. I need it to be called "outlined" because that is what it is. (the outlined product with retouching, logos completed). So I have to rename the layer each time. As this is a very common task for me, I want to save the step of renaming the layer which would not have to do if it would keep the "outlined" layer name instead of the "logo" name.
It seems to always keep the top layer name when merging layers. It doesn't matter if I select the top layer first and add the others, or select the bottom (outlined) layer first and add the others above it.
    Thoughts?
    thanks...

I definitely don't follow you -- the layer of the outlined product and the composite with the logo are the same name?
    - You could create an action that did it for you (merge selected layers and rename the resulting layer).
    - You could create a blank layer called outline at the top of your master doc, or in the file prep action and select that layer along with the others below it.
    - If you're creating these files yourself and naming them, you might try an action that selects that appropriate layers, merges them, and gives them the same name. That would really save you some time.
    - Command-option-e will merge the selected layers to a new layer.

  • APPLY IMAGE vs. BLENDING MODES.

    Hey guys,
I am trying to understand the difference between apply image and blending modes as I realise my grasp of it is weak.
Why blending the duplicate of an image with the original, with a given blending mode, does not give the same result as, Applying the duplicate of an image to the original with the same given blending mode in Apply Image?
What I have done in Photoshop, to be clearer :
    1. one image ("background image"), duplicated it ("copy1") and set the blending mode ot linear light (for example). I get the result 1.
    2. I selected "background image" and applied it in linear light (for this example), with Apply Image, to the "copy1" image. Result is different.
Can you people tell me why? Where is my thought process faulty? thanks.

    DUH moment for me today..
As Sudarshan requested, I was going to do the screen shots of my results, so I did it again and this time got the same result for both situation (apply image and blending the two layers with the same blending mode).
I don't know what the heck I did the first time round, but surely something wrong.. Sorry for the confusion guys.
To answer the questions though : Conroy, I had four layers (four copies of the same image) and grouped them in two different comps (one blend mode and other apply image) for comparison, switching from one to the other.
RKelly : it was an exact copy of the original, so twice the same picture.
As to not make this post a blank shot, I would like to get back to my original question. Blending an image to another with Apply Image OR blending two layers with the blending mode options in the layers palette are two similar processes, is that right?
And add a question, while I am here. Still with Apply Image, will adding an image (A) to another (B) (with Add blend mode) be accurately the same as substracting the invert of A from B (with the substract blend mode)?

  • Load/import images into layers to create animated gif in PE4

I'm trying to make an animated gif using Photoshop Elements 4.0.
I have numerous images (photos) that I need to insert into separate frames of one image.
(photo1, photo2 ..... photo10 - all combined in layers to create the frames of the animated gif)
I can open each photo separately, copy it, go the the animated gif image, create a new layer, and paste the image into the layer to create a frame in the animated gif.  This is very time consuming.
Does Elements 4.0 allow for just opening/importing the separate images (photos) into the layers (frames) of the gif direclty?  I remember having software that came with Macromedia Dreamweaver 4.0 in 2000 that made this simple and straight forward.

  • Applying images as skins in chat applet

    Hi,
I have developed chat applet. I have implemented skins in that applet. But as colors. So how to apply images as diff skins.
    It is urgent.
    Please be polite and answer

Good evening, sir, or madam, as the case may be,
To correctly implement this, you must first learn how to load image files into an applet. Might I be so bold as to recommend that one look at the javax.swing.ImageIcon class, as it is endowed with constructors which facilitate the loading of images via a URL.
Following that, I would then encourage you to learn how to take said loaded image and draw it on component. For this, I would recommend subclassing some component (JPanel, or some other suitable component), and override the paintComponent() method. The java.awt.Graphics class is supremely suited to perform drawing operations of this sort, as well as many others.
Once you have successfully completed these tasks, then you will find that you have an applet which one can decorated with wonderful imagery from all corners of the world.
    Yours most sincerely,

  • Layer Style/Blending options applying to all layers ie.. drop shadow angles

I am having a problem in CS6 Photoshop where I never experienced this in CS3-5.
I am designing a website and when I apply a drop shadow or inner shadow to a layer through layer style/blending options in the layers tab. It applys the same angle etc.. to all the other layers I have done styles too...
I will have 5 + layers done with styles and I will make a new layer and give it a shape, open up blending options and when I do a drop shadow and change the angle I literally can see everything on my layout change angles also when I move it around for just ONE layers style... What on earth is going on? This makes it impossible to make unique designs unless I keep flattening my PSD and transfering stuff over which destroys workflow.

Thank you for the reply's. I actually was able to figure it out shortly after making this thread.
@Noel Carboni: I needed to change the direction of the light for an inner shadow on a set of arrows for a slider. If they were the same angle it would look horrific.
