APPLY IMAGE vs. BLENDING MODES.

Hey guys,
I am trying to understand the difference between apply image and blending modes as I realise my grasp of it is weak.
Why blending the duplicate of an image with the original, with a given blending mode, does not give the same result as, Applying the duplicate of an image to the original with the same given blending mode in Apply Image?
What I have done in Photoshop, to be clearer :
1. one image ("background image"), duplicated it ("copy1") and set the blending mode ot linear light (for example). I get the result 1.
2. I selected "background image" and applied it in linear light (for this example), with Apply Image, to the "copy1" image. Result is different.
Can you people tell me why? Where is my thought process faulty? thanks.

DUH moment for me today..
As Sudarshan requested, I was going to do the screen shots of my results, so I did it again and this time got the same result for both situation (apply image and blending the two layers with the same blending mode).
I don't know what the heck I did the first time round, but surely something wrong.. Sorry for the confusion guys.
To answer the questions though : Conroy, I had four layers (four copies of the same image) and grouped them in two different comps (one blend mode and other apply image) for comparison, switching from one to the other.
RKelly : it was an exact copy of the original, so twice the same picture.
As to not make this post a blank shot, I would like to get back to my original question. Blending an image to another with Apply Image OR blending two layers with the blending mode options in the layers palette are two similar processes, is that right?
And add a question, while I am here. Still with Apply Image, will adding an image (A) to another (B) (with Add blend mode) be accurately the same as substracting the invert of A from B (with the substract blend mode)?

  • Layered image with blending mode won't display properly in Indesign CS3

    Hello,
    I'm having trouble placing a layered psd and/or tiff with blending modes into my indesign cs3 document. Basically I have a flattened image with a shadow on a white background. I've had to doctor the image a bit in photoshop and I've used the multiply blending mode to remove the white background. (I'm trying to get around having to clip the image and having to recreate the shadow). Anyone know how I can drop my layered image into indesign and have it keep the blending modes I've applied in photoshop?
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    I'll try and do my best to describe what it is I'm doing.
    I've started out with a “flat” image of a product on a white background with a shadow on it. I need to make the background transparent and so that all I’m left with is the product with the shadow on a transparent background.I want to be able to place this image over another image in indesign and have the background remain transparent.
    On the first layer I have a clipped out version of the product with no background (All by itself with no background or shadow). On the second layer I have the original “flat” image with the shadow and white background. On this layer I’ve used the multiply blending mode to remove the white background.
    Now that I have the product on one layer by itself and the product and shadow on layer two with the multiply blending mode I have an image of the product with a shadow with no background. When I place this into indesign, my image shows up with the white background as if the multiply blending mode isn’t applied.
    I’ve tried this on other images. It doesn’t appear that it lets you bring an image over with that blending mode. It's like I'd have to bring over a clipped image and then place that on top of my original image with a blending mode placed on it "in" Indesign.
    Hope that make sense?

  • How to apply blending modes to a gif in CS6?

    Hello everyone! I am in need of a tutorial or at least a how-to-step-through on how to apply the different blending modes on a gif.
    For this specific situation, I have a gif with a black background and a white semi-glowing scope, but I just want the white glowing scope to show.
    I think that Lighten would be a good blending mode, but I just don't know how to produce the results I want.
    Could anyone give me a reference or a guide on how to do this?
    I'm not sure how to edit a gif either, being that there are so many tutorials saying this and that, leaving me confused in the end.
    If someone could break all this down for me in detail(as simple as possible) and what not, that'd be great!
    Until then, thank you!

    GIFs are in indexed color and don't support any blending modes nor layers. You need to do an Image --> Mode --> RGB and then a whole new world will open up...

  • Clip blend mode doesn't apply to transitions?

    I'm trying out the Final Cut X demo, wondering if I want to upgrade from Final Cut Pro 5, whch currently won't load on my computer anymore. Anyway, I've run into a problem that is really strange...if I want to fade in an overlay clip that has a different blend mode, like Color Burn, Linear Light, etc., the transition (I've tried Cross Dissolve and Circle) doesn't use the other blend mode. The transition will do "normal" blending only, and then the instant the transition is complete, the other blending mode kicks in. Then as soon as a transition begins at the end of the clip, the blend mode goes back to "Normal." I can't seem to find a way to apply the other blend mode to the transition. Adding effects and making other clip settings like cropping, etc. seem to work, but the transistion refuses to use my blending setting. Is there another trick I'm overlooking?
    Thanks!
    Shayne

    More than that the blend mode applied to the connected clip, which usually effects and intercats with the clip below, now doesn't blend with it at all.
    There is a weird workaround you can set up for this. Right-clcik and use open in timeline on the connected clip. Put the clip you want to blend with inside that clip's timeline. Stack them the way you want, and then step back into the project. the clip and the blended clip will be together and you can apply a transition at the beginning. This might work for what you want to do, but I can't be sure.

  • Screen blend mode as png

    Hi all,
    I am trying to achieve a certain effect with Maxwell Render and Photoshop. What I use from the Maxwell render mxi file are basically these layers:
    Background layer
    and on top of this the light layer:
    When I apply the Screen blend mode to the light layer this is the result:
    My issue is that the final program I need the files for cant do blend modes. I must keep the two files separate. I need the 'background layer' as a jpeg which is obviously no problem but the light layer as a png with alpha channel.
    How can I modify the light layer to basically remove all the black (as it does in 'Screen' blend mode). I need to save it as a png so when I overlay it on the background layer the effect is still the same.
    Thank you for your help!
    Julian

    Thanks for giving it a go [SW],
    Using two jpegs would be simple enough but there are usually multiple light layers where the light overlaps and I have to be able to call on any number of them at one time.
    Up till now I have been using one image with multiple lights over one without lights but I have to manually cut the light layer into pieces to get the transparency and be able to overlap them.
    Using 'select - color range' to select the red in the light layer, copy paste to new layer works quite well but it doesnt end up as clean as the screen layer blend.
    My thought was that if photoshop can tell the black to go transparent in screen blend it should be able to delete it as well.
    I have heard of a windows plugin called alphaworks which sounds promising but cant find anything for mac..
    Any further suggestions would be very much appreciated!

  • Aliased text on PDF export with blending modes

    So I've had this issue with a pdf, I tried to export it CMYK, RVB, interactive pdf, regular pdf, with tons of different other options, the text was still very aliased.
    I decided to take it back from scratch, openned a new document with the same size, and copied/pasted element after element from the old one to the new one, exporting as pdf between each copy/paste. The first exports went really well, the render was great… until I pasted a vector element that was applied with a blending mode (overlay).
    When I switched it to normal, the pdf export was smooth again. Tried every blending mode, everyone makes the text jaggy. Switch back, it's ok. So I'm 100% sure that this comes from blending modes, as opposed to what I could have read on other forums.
    This is a request, please, InDesign team, take care of this problem, this is quite annoying in many cases.
    Thank you for your attention!
    Twitted here as well : https://twitter.com/grinderlabs/status/448381486627311616

    To minmize the possibility of rasterizing or outlining text when transparency is flattened, keep the text above any transparent objects. Blending modes, along with most effects, use transparency.
    You can also minimize the risk by exporting the PDF with live transparency, which is supported in Acrobat 5 or higher compatibility.

  • AS3 Blending Modes

    Hi all, I'm trying to apply the Screen Blending Mode to a Movie Clip.  I know how to do this using the properties panel if the clip is on the stage, but I need to do this purely with Actionscript 3 and I'm having difficuly finding how to do this properly.
    I have another object which is a PNG file that I load into the swf behind object1.
    var object:object_mc = new object_mc();
    var imgLoader:Loader = new Loader();
    var url:URLRequest = new URLRequest("box.png");
    imgLoader.load(url);
    addChild(imgLoader);
    imgLoader.x = 0;
    imgLoader.y = 0;
    addChild(object);
    BlendMode.SCREEN; // This doesn't produce any errors, but doens't apply the effect.
    object.x = 6;
    object.y = 6;
    Any help is much appreciated,
    Thanks =)

    And you might still want to use:
    object.blendMode=BlendMode.SCREEN;
    Using the static class property helps in that the compiler can check. If you did something like:
    object.blendMode="Screen"
    It might or might not work, but the compiler couldn't tell you that it wasn't supposed to be capitalized.

  • Merging/Flattening Layers with different blending modes and maintaining the visual appearance

    Hello,
    I see there are many others that are having the same problem as me. And alas, it doesn't seem like the problem has been solved or very understood for that matter.
    I want to be able to take a document, that has multiple layers, inside of multiple groups with various layers having various blending modes applied to them and from within that document, select simply two of those layers, one with a Divide blending mode and the other layer Normal, merge those two layers, but have the visual appearance of the merged layer maintain the visual appearance of what the layers looked like before I merged them.
    Everytime I attempt this, Ps takes my Divide layer, reverts it back to Normal and then merges the layers, thus changing the appearance of what it was before the merge. This is not the desired result.
    I understand that when you flatten an entire series of layers, it applies all the blending modes and maintains the visual appearance. Is there a way to do this with just two layers instead of all the layers? If so, that would be great information. If not, why not?
    Thank you
    Jake

    Short answer:  No.
    A "layer" with a specific blending mode implies a sequence of math operations on a given pixel.  Think of the visible pixel R, G, and B values as the result of a potentially complex math formula that combines numbers from each layer in complex ways (those ways being defined by the blending mode you've chosen).  You can't always simplify particular factors of your choosing in a given math formula.
    The next step is to examine why you would want to do so.  Perhaps there's a more direct way to achieve your goal that would avert the need entirely.
    Another possibility, if the effect of several layers together is something you'd like to manipulate as a unit, is to Group the layers.

  • How to add keyframes on blending Mode (Normal, Soft Light etc)

    Hi All,
    How can I add keyframes on blending mode? I have a movie layer and need it to start from Soft Light with sooth transition to Normal or Hard Light in a few seconds.How can I do this?
    Thanks
    Andy

    Thank you. I have found another way here:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/9.0/WS3878526689cb91655866c1103906c6dea-7d0aa.htm l
    "You can’t directly animate blending modes by using keyframes. To change a blending mode at a certain time, split the layer at that time and apply the new blending mode to the part of the layer that continues. You can also use the Compound Arithmetic effect, the results of which are similar to the results of blending modes but can change over time."
    Have you tried that? which way is preferrable quality-wise?

  • How to Apply adjustment layers to multiple layers that have different blending modes ...

    How to Apply adjustment layers to multiple layers that have different blending modes  and keep the colours the same as the adjusment done?
    I work in Animation painting Backgrounds.  My files are sometimes upwards to 200+ layers.
    I will use adjustment layers to quickly balance colours and constrast on top of those many many layers.
    The only way that I know of how to apply adjustment layers it to every single layer  ( by applying I mean I need to get rid of the adjustment layers because we cant use them in production but i need the new colours be applied to all layers underneath ) in a psd is to manually do it By duplicating the adjusment layer 200+ times and  then merging each layer to one of those adjustment layers so that that layer can take the adjustment layers effect permanently.
    The issue is that Within Those 200 layers I have some layers set to Multiply or OVERLAY.    IT obviously wont apply the adjustment layer properly to those layers because those layer blend mode affect the layers under them. The colour wont be the same anymore in the spots that had the multiply blended mode.
    HEres an example of a simple File.  to show what i mean.
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3408266/ball%20layers.jpg
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3408266/ball.psd
    I have 2 adjustment layers up top.  I need to get rid of them by applying them to each layer! I cannot merge any of the layers. We need all those layers for production.
    I can apply the adjustment layers manually and this works GREAT for all Layers set to normal.  THey take on the colour change just FINE.
    However, The issue is that layer 6 and layer 4 are both set to mutiply and this screws up the colour once i apply the adjustment layers to each layer manually...
    How can i apply my adjustment layers to a file like this with some layers being set to multiply while keeping the layers exactly the same configuration  and The new colour taking efffect exactly how i looks before i apply the adjustment layers?
    Now the simple solution is to merge the multiply layers to the layer that it affects HOWEVER I NEED those multiply layers to be seperate!
    I'm assuming what I want to do is impossible? Hope this isnt confusing.  As far as i know its impossible to do what I want it to do.  but just wanted to ask and see.
    I would REALLY REALLY love to talk to a adobe programmer/ technician/pro working at adobe about this.  Theres just no way to get in touch with anyone... =(
    any thoughts ?

    Sure... if you want to put it that way. Either way its not the desirable outcome.
    its just frustrating that theres no way to apply adjustment layers to hundreds of layers while keeping them in the same configuration ( blendmodes,  layer order ,  without merging)  while keeping the same end result.
    works great if all your layers are set to normal though..    But I really need to keep shadow layers seperately and be able to adjust on the fly aswell as apply those adjusment to all my layers.
    I suppose that just isnt possible.   I understand the math required for this would be tremendous/ complicated if something like this would ever be implemented.  Would be nice if adobe could come up with some solution to this.  Its really a huge issue in my work flow and theres no alternatives.    How else can I adjust colours to 100+ layers  with a few clicks that lets me play around the the adjustment until im happy with the outcome.    Really wish i could adjust and the quickly apply that adjustment to all my layers regardless of blend mode.   LIke If the Layers with blendmode could somehow take the properties of the adjustment layer and keep adjusting those layers undereathe on top of that blended mode that its doing...

  • "applying" a blend mode

    Hi.
    I was curious what rules PS follows exactly when it comes to merging of layers with blend modes other than "normal".
    Can anybody direct me somewhere, where I can find information about that? I searched the web extensively, but couldn't find anything. Adobe Livedocs is mute about that, too.
    For example:
    - blend layer 2 (hard ligth)
    - blend layer 1 (vivid light)
    - Background layer (normal)
    --> now if you blend layer1+2, you alter the visible (flattened) on-screen-image.
    Another example:
    I had a layer with a landscape + a medium-blue sky without stars. On another layer I had white stars on a (nearly) black backdrop. So I used the "lighten" mode to fill the medium-blue sky with stars.
    Later on, I did some trick to remove the black backdrop and only have the pixels of the white stars on my layer. (And NO, I didn't do any "blend if" or "color range" or something therelike, I only used the blending modes!). Unfortunately I can't remember how I did it exactly, but I think I merged the layer with another empty layer (I know it sounds weird), possibly putting both layers into a group first and merging the group.
    Fact is, that after the merging (of my stars layer and "???"), I got a layer with mode "normal" and pixels that had RGB and transparency values in such a way that they produced the same final (blended) picture as - beforehand - the pixels of the white-stars-on-black-backdrop did in "lighten mode". So if I went back and forth in the history (before and after merging), there was no visible difference in the flat-on-screen-image.
    I would be so thankful, if anybody - by chance - knows what I had been doing :)
    (I tried merging the layer with, respectively, an empty, a black-filled, a white-filled and a 50%grey-filled layer, but I couldn't reproduce it).

    Thanks for helping. I'm sorry to repeat myself, but there are obviously other ways to achieve this, that's not my problem. The stars, etc... this was just an example.
    "Blending a layer with an underlying transparency ..."-> First of all, I said "merging", and then "...does nothing" is not true. Try this for example: open the blending options of the "stars-layer" (or any layer for that matter), choose "blend if">"this layer" and drag the slider until a visible part of the image has disappeared, but a part is still there. Then create a new empty, transparent, layer and merge these two layers. Voilà.
    Now, that's *not* the way I proceeded in my original example. Just to demonstrate that merging with an empty layer can be a workaround.
    In the example here, you can see that a new layer has been created containing pixels with RGB and transparency values that produce exactly the same flattened-on-screen-image as before. You can go back and forth in the history and don't see any changes on-screen.
    In my original example, I used another blending technique (not "blend if" but "lighten"). But
    after merging, I also had a new layer containing pixels in "normal mode" that reproduced exactly the same on-screen picture as did previously the pixels in "lighten mode" in such a fashion, that - again - you would see no difference on-screen when going back and forth in history.

  • Changing blend mode while PS is applying a filter makes layer "invisible".

    Came across this by chance.
    I applied a D&S filter and, while PS was busy "calculating", I hit Shift-Opt-K, to set blend mode "darken".
    That did set the blens mode, but also somehow made the layer have no effect. Going back in history to before the "Change blend mode" and re-doing it worked.
    Screenshots:
    Layer has no effect:
    Stepping back, still nothing:
    On step further back in history; works as expected.
    Apply blend mode "Darken" again. Now it works:

    I was able to reproduce this in CS6 and CS5.
    Thanks for the report!

  • Why isn't it letting me apply blending modes to 3D objects?

         Hello, I have had a problem with After Effects, it is not letting me use blending modes on 3D layers? Any Help? Here is the video I am following After Effects Tutorial - Create 3D Text onto live action Footage HD - YouTube

    Blending modes are not one of the features that you can use with the ray-traced 3D renderer.

  • No luck with applying Image Mask!

    Im trying to add an Image Mask to a video clip in Motion.
    I added the Image Mask to the clip per the instructions then added one of the Brushstroke movies from the Content folder in the Library.
    The dashboard shows me that the movie is in the well.
    But Im seeing no masking going on.
    No matter what blend or source setting I choose, I see no masking.
    What am I doing wrong?

    I happened to be mucking about with the brushstroke clip the other day. If you're looking to have the image appear as the brush drags across, you can simply drop the clip on top of the image layer and set the blend mode to silouhette luma. Ya get something like this:
    http://homepage.mac.com/longstrider/iMovieTheater12.html
    I tried to apply it as a mask also, but because the pbrush is positioned at the bottom of the frame, it didn't do the trick for me.
    Hope this is helpful

  • How to apply image or footage to shape?

    How do I apply an image or footage to a shape layer. Also, is possible to apply a different image to the front and back of the shape? I am using AE CS4.

    How do I apply an image or footage to a shape layer.
    Teetime: By their very definition, shape layers are vector-based. They can't contain bitmap images like photos or video.
    If I understand correctly what you want to do, you can use the content of a shape layer as a track matte for any footage item. In that case, the shape layer would act as a mask for the footage.
    To do this, place the footage/photo/graphic directly below the shape layer in the timeline, and then press the Switches/Modes button at the bottom of the timeline panel. In the TrkMat menu for this item (right next to the blend modes), choose "Alpha" so that the footage is masked by the opacity values of the shape layer directly above.
    If this is not what you wanted to do, then let me know.
    For more information on masking layers with the contens from other layers, see Tracking mattes and traveling mattes in After Effects Help.
    Also, is possible to apply a different image to the front and back of the shape?
    I assume you mean a back side in 3D space, that shows when you rotate the layer or move a camera in the 3D scene?
    To do this, create a second layer to use as back side, nudge it back in 3D space a tiny bit so that it's behind the other layer (0.1 pixel will do!) and then set the first layer as a parent for the back side, so that any transformations you perform on the front side layer are automatically applied to the back side layer.
