Apply Permissions to Enclosed Items has hidden my files!!

I have been having issues sharing folders on my external hard drive, which is connected to my MacBook.  The folders have been added as shared through my system preferences menu, and the users and permissions don't seem to be a problem.  Alas, sharing these folders is still giving me trouble.
While trying to trouble-shoot this issue, I (apparently foolishly) right clicked on one of the folders (Movies) and selected 'Apply Permissions to Enclosed Items'.  Ever since doing this, all of the files within that folder are no longer viewable...every subfolder is now EMPTY.  I have confirmed that the files are still on the drive and haven't been deleted, but I can not access any of them from my MacBook which is a major problem.
How can I revert whatever settings/permissions I altered by clicking 'Apply Permissions to Enclosed Items'??
Details:
MacBook - OSX 10.7.2
SeaGate HDD formatted as NTFS, running on Mac via Paragon NTFS
Thanks so much for any help!!

Why has it done this
Becuase you changed all the permissions denying you the ability to delete the files.
and how do I stop it?
Boot into Recovery: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718
Go to the Utilities menu and select Terminal
At the prompt, type resetpassword and hit return.
When the password reset uitility loads,
Select your Hard Drive
Select the affected User
Click the Reset home folder permissions and ACLs button.
Quit the utility and restart normally from the main menu in Recovery.

  • Granting permissions to enclosed items

I am running 10.4.7. I have a shared folder set up into which documents are frequently placed that I want others to be able to edit. However, it seems that every time I add a new document, I have to repeat the dialogue extending read-write privileges to enclosed items. Is there a way to have everything in the folder automatically readable-writable when it is put there, without having to tell the folder it is okay every single time I add something new?

    1) Move the contents of your shared folder elsewhere
    2) Enable Access Control Lists (ACLs) on your boot volume by opening Terminal and entering:
    sudo fsaclctl -p / -e
    3) Copy and paste this into a TextEdit window, replace UserName with the short user name of one of the users to be given access, and "path/to/your/shared/folder" with the path of your shared folder:
sudo chmod +a "UserName allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,\
    addsubdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directoryinherit" \
    /path/to/your/shared/folder
Then paste the above into a terminal window.
    4) Repeat step 3, substituting another short user name
    5) command-drag the original contents of the shared folder back inside (command-dragging will copy them, simply moving them from another location won't cause the ACE to stick)
From this point forward, any files or folders that are created inside will be read+write to all the specified users. Note that moving a previously existing file into this folder from elsewhere on the same volume won't cause it to inherit the ACE setting; you must copy in previously existing files for it to work.

  • Apply to enclosed items Read & Write permissions on admin accnt not holding

    Hi,
I have been having nightmares with Mac Office saying database was not present and firefox giving me error 228.
After much to and froing i realised that my main admin user account had read and write permissions but they weren't applied to enclosed items (well not all of them). Once applied and without rebooting, everything worked fine again.
However, when rebooting same issues arose. When re applying permissions to enclosed items things work again just fine.
Any idea what is wrong? How can I make these permissions hold permanently or what sort of script or anything would make them not hold?

never use "apply to enclosed items" on ANY system created folders. that includes your home directory, your desktop folder, Applications folder etc. use it ONLY on folders you make yourself.
system created folders often have hidden ACLs and using "apply to enclosed items" will propagate those ACLs to everything inside, usually with highly unpleasant results. In particular, you home folder has hidden "everyone deny delete" ACLs. using "apply to enclosed items" on it will force you to authenticate any time you want to modify anything inside your home folder.
to fix permissions and acls on your home directory use this link
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1334?viewlocale=en_US
However, the ACL resetting utility mentioned in the link is buggy and changes the groups on anything it touches in your home directory to wheel (to which you don't even belong). therefore, after following the instructions in that link run the following terminal command (copy and paste please)
    chgrp -R `id -gn` ~

  • Permissions and "apply to enclosed items"

    Mac Pro 3.1
    HD1: Systemdisk, OSX 10.7.5
    HD2: Projectdisk
    HD3: Studiodisk, OSX 10.6.8
    Partition: Timemachinedisk
    Partition: Backupdisk
    HD4: Protoolsdisk, OSX 10.5.7
    Partition: Lunadisk
I use Studiodisk and Protoolsdisk exclusively for audio work and they are set up just for that. I have disk images of them so I can quickly restore them if something should go wrong. I use Systemdisk for everything else. Keeping those two things separate is good for my workflow and reliability.
I had booted from Studiodisk. I wanted to give myself permission to write to that disk when booted from systemdisk. I don't remember exactly, but: I opened the "get info" on the studiodisk, changed the one that said "read only" to "read and write" and selected "apply to enclosed items". Entered my password and hit enter.
I know. This is probably THE most stupid thing you can do on a mac. And I immediately started to feel the consequences. (But at the time I thought: I'm planning to restore this disk from a disk image soon anyway so I'll just try it.)
The mac worked on the permissions for a couple of minutes. I let it finish, then I started to get error messages about system and library files that no longer could be used, and icons on the desktop started to disappear. After hitting enter on 15 to 20 of these error messages I forced a restart with the power button, held down the option key, and selected to boot from Systemdisk (Lion).
The apple and spinning wheel showed up, everything looked good until the point where the desktop would have been displayed. Instead I had only a grey screen and a (working) pointer.
Booting from Protoolsdisk (Leopard), same thing, only blue screen.
Booting from Studiodisk (SL), just apple logo and spinning wheel.
Booting from OSX install disk 10.5.4, everything works as expected, and I use Disk Utilities to restore Studiodisk from image on Lunadisk, and Protoolsdisk from image on Backupdisk. I restore Systemdisk from Time Machine backup on Timemachinedisk.
Now, when booting from Studiodisk or Protoolsdisk everything works as expected except: I cannot access any of the four disks without any OS installed. I never seen this before. The error message when I click on a disk in the finder side panel: (Translated from norwegian)  The folder can't be opened because you don't have the permission to show the content.
And, if I try to boot from Systemdisk I get a kernel panic right away. I tried to restore several times. Repaired permissions. Even repaired permissions before booting after restoring.
So, Studiodisk and Protoolsdisk working, probably because the data inside the disk images was untouched, Systemdisk not working because Timemachine files was altered in the permissions change. "Enclosed items", could they perhaps include aliases of the other disks and that's why all the disks were affected?
    So my two questions:
    1. How can I get access to the four non-OS disks again?
    and
    2. Is there any way of repairing the ownership and permissions on the Timemachine backup before I restore the data.
My Terminal experience is limited to copy/paste basically…
I guess I see myself booting from the OSX install disk, typing commands in Terminal that sets exact ownership and permissions to all files on a disk giving me access to them, then in Disk Utilities Repairing permissions to give the system files back their right permissions.
    Any help…
    Thank you.
    Ben.

    I solved my issues.
I'm sorry I can't tell you exactly what solved the thing with the non-OS disks, because I lost the link, but it was two simple sudo commands in Terminal. Something with tilde-R
The kernel panic on the restored lion disk was due to me booting from a leopard install disk when restoring. Using a Lion disk worked.

  • Why Does Apple Tempt Us With "Apply to Enclosed Items?"

Unfortunately—like too many others—I find myself in a grand mess because I innocently selected "Apply to Enclosing Folders" while on the system hard drive.
I had been trying to resolve an issue where I was unable to write files to the drive. I selected the icon of the hard drive, went into Permissions and there it was—the solution (or so I thought) hanging there like a ripe peach on a tree within easy reach. I made sure my name and "Read & Write" was selected then checked the "Apply to Enclosed Items."
This has resulted in DISASTER and I have spent the past 24 hours trying (no success so far!!) to fix the mess.
Judging from the number of entries I've seen in this forum as I try to find a solution to my problem, I am shocked that Apple would provide this option in the Permissions area WITHOUT A WARNING of how seemingly innocent act may instead have unexpected, time-consuming and COSTLY results!!!
    What is UP with that???

  • Why is "Apply to enclosed items" grayed out?

There is an archived thread on this issue but with no resolution. When I want to change permissions on the contents of a folder, very often the "Apply to enclosed items" button (in the Get Info Permissions panel) is grayed out.
Why? What's the fix? Is this a bug?
    QuickSilver dual-800 G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   X Server

You'll only be able to apply permissions to children folders using the Finder's interface (via the Get Info or Inspector window) if you're the file's POSIX owner or if otherwise your Effective Permissions return this control (e.g. the ability to perform writesecurity and chown via an applicable ACL entry).
But, generally speaking, the POSIX owner is delegated as the user who can change permissions for a filesystem object. Any administrator who is authorized root privileges (can "su to root") can change permissions for any filesystem object. Workgroup Manager provides a simple interface for doing this, but you may want to familiarize yourself with the chmod and chown commands for greater flexibility.

  • File Sharing/Applying Permissions/Both Macs CRASHED!!!

    Someone Please Help!!!
I'm a 14+ year Microsoft IT Professional. 6 months ago I traded my HP Notebook for a brand new MacBook (White) and for Christmas, traded my HP Entertainment notebook and accessories towards the purchase of a brand new 21.5" iMac! Very happy with decision until about an hour ago.
Today, I purchased a USB 1TB external drive. It's connected to the iMac and was attempting to setup sharing for it. This was so I could finally setup Time Machine and create a backup of my MacBook which included my entire iTunes and iPhoto Library as well as my family website (not yet published).
I had both machines connected to my wireless network and they were talking to each other fine. I was logged on to my wife's account on the iMac (setup as an administrator) and setting up sharing from there. My MacBook was not able to see the External Drive for some reason...which I saw did not have the user permissions setup properly. I added myself to the list, changed the permissions to read/write, then right-clicked to accept permissions. It ran for about 15 seconds then was done.
On the MacBook, I did the same as my wifes account was not set to see the shared resources on the MacBook. However, when I right-clicked to apply permissions, I began to get errors writing the permissions. Was advised of the errors and only able to click OK. I did this for about 25 permissions...then the machine froze. I did a hard reboot and now my MacBook sits at the grey apple startup screen with the gear turning and won't startup. I attempted to log into SafeMode by holding shift until I saw the progress bar under the gear at startup...but after about halfway through, the progress bar disappeared and left with only the apple and gear turning.
On the iMac, my wife's account would not allow me to open Safari or any other programs (the dock icons just bounced and bounced...no options to force quit). I was able to click the Apple logo and restart. Upon restart, I logged back into Wife's account and her desktop was back to default, the external drive did not show as connected on the desktop (but was available in the finder) and her documents and downloads folder icons in the Dock had grey question marks and were not accessible. Nor can I access them in finder. She had just finished updating her iCal earlier today and when we tried to access iCal, it could not find the file for her calendars.
The only positive at this point is that my account is fine. I didnt do anything while on my account and it appears to be working fine.
Being a new Mac user, I have been following the online tutorials and support discussions for anything I havent done before. However, now I have a dead MacBook (with all of my families photos and iTunes music unaccessible) and my wife's documents and information is unaccessible.
Please someone help me to get things back to normal!! All I wanted to do was to backup both machines now that I had the means to and setting that up caused what appears to be an epic crash:(

right-clicked to accept permissions? what do you mean by that? you don't have to right-click on anything when you are changing permissions on something. did you perhaps use "apply to enclosed items" to propagate permissions to everything inside? please clarify.

same question. changing permissions is instantaneous unless you use "apply to enclosed items".
On the MacBook, I did the same as my wifes account was not set to see the shared resources on the MacBook. However, when I right-clicked to apply permissions,
same question as before. what did you right-clicked on and what did you apply permissions to?
I began to get errors writing the permissions.

  • Apologies, this item has been interrupted due to an error...

Hi there. Recently i have changed motherboards/processors in my desktop PC (but kept the same hard drive). Since then, when i go to view Sky Go on my desktop, i get the following error message: “Apologies, this item has been interrupted due to an error. Please click play to resume watching. [t:6013 / c:4110 ].” I have worked through the steps on the support page and none of these have remedied the problem. I decided to leave it to the new month as I thought maybe it a was a maximum device limit issue, but I have removed what was my old PC and have tried to view a channel on this device, yet the same error message occurred. I have cleared all browser cookies, have reinstalled Silverlight and have set permissions for chrome or adblocker, not to block SkyGo. I have also tried viewing on Internet Explorer and Firefox and have the same issue.  Can anyone else lend any ideas on how to sort this?  Thanks

Login to Sky Go and click 'Watch live TV' from the home page. It will attempt to show Sky News and fail with the error [t6013-c1501].
    2. Right click on the error and you should see the Menu option 'Silverlight'. Select this and a dialog should appear. Click the 'Application Storage' tab and delete any entry that relates to sky go. Click OK to close the dialog.
    3. Close the browser (if you don't the next bit will fail as it will be using the file you need to rename).
    4. Open explorer and navigate to the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\PlayReady
Note: This folder might be hidden on your PC, if so in explorer select Organize->Folder and Search Options->View->Show hidden files and folders and click OK.
    5. Rename the file mspr.hds to mspr.hds.OLD
Note: Don't rename/delete the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\PlayReady or you will get the error [t6000-c1501]. The folder must exist in order for the new file to be created by Silverlight.
    6. Log back into Sky Go and click 'Watch live TV', this time you should see a message saying something like downloading security components.

  • Apply permissions on the site mailbox app

    Hi All,
Would like to know how can i apply special permissions on site mailbox? assume that i have a special group called L1,
which has the contribute permissions at the sub site level. [ also  i have subsite1 members, subsite1 owners].
so can i  apply permissions[say contribute permissions on site mailbox] on this site mailbox on this group L1.
IF L2 is the other group, then L2 is having a "View Only" permissions and L3 is other group,Read permissions.
so in this way, i wanna achieve multiple groups can have a different permissions on this site mailbox.
I checked this link Site Mailbox Permissions . but didn't get this specific info. in the site.
    can anyone pls  confirm this:
    is this possible?
    any help is appreciated

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to assign permission for site mailbox.
Per my knowledge, we could not assign permission for the site mailbox app.
When the site mailbox has been created successfully, the permission will be automatically assigned.
The users in the default owners group or the default members group for the site (anyone with Contribute permissions) can use the site mailbox from SharePoint.
We could not assign permission, such as view only, read permission for the app.

    Hi jonathanm91,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know it can be frustrating when you cannot download previously purchased content. I would suggest making sure you are using the same Apple ID that was used to originally purchase the content. If you are using the same account and still cannot download the previously purchased content, it may be necessary to contact iTunes Store support.
    Download past purchases

You may find the answer to your question below:
If your download was interrupted, learn how to resume the download.
See what to do if you have trouble using an app.
Make sure your computer is authorized using the Apple ID that you used for the original purchase.
Make sure your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, Mac, or PC is associated with your Apple ID.
Make sure you’re in a country where iTunes in the Cloud is available.
If you’re having trouble downloading an item, make sure you can download the item again from iTunes in the Cloud. You may want to sync the content to another device instead.
If you can't find the item that you purchased in the iTunes Store, report a problem with the item. You can report a problem with a purchase made within the last 90 days.
If you have a problem with an older purchase, contact iTunes Store support.
After you download your purchases, back up your iTunes library. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they've been refunded or aren't on the iTunes Store.

  • 'You do not have permissions for this item' - MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

    Dear members,
I am trying to access a Material Spec but I am persistently presented with the following message: "'You do not have permissions for this item'".
Funnily, I was previously able to access the specifications but now I am presented with this.
I have the same issue with LIO Profiles.
Does anybody have a known solution for this?
    Kind regards,

This usually occurs when you do not have Read permission according to the workflow status of the specification. Different permissions can be set up for different statuses in WFA (WorkFlow) Administration.
Also, if you are using the Business Units as Security feature (rather than just BU visibility), you could get this message. In this case, you should not be able to see this spec in a search result though, so if you can see it in the material spec search page results, it isn't a BU issue, it is a workflow read permission issue.
There is one additional possibility, which is if your team has implemented the SpecVetoHandler extensibility point, which allows for added custom read permission checks. This is a technical extensibility point configured in the CustomPluginExtensions.xml config.
But most likely, it is a workflow permissions issue. You'll have to ask your workflow adminitrator user(s).

    Ron

  • Error Message "This Item has not been purchased"

I just bought a brand new computer with Windows 7 and I just downloaded Itunes.  I couldn't remember my itunes password so I changed my password.  After changing my password, I changed my Email address since I was using an old one I don't have access to anymore.  After doing that I started trying to get my old purchases put on my new computer and maybe 40 songs downloaded before I got an error saying "This item has not been purchased with your Apple ID".  These songs are listed in my purchased list, I bought them on my old computer and Itunes isn't letting me download nearly 300 songs that I paid for.
