Apply transparent fade to photo edges

I have found that I can apply a fade to transparent using the Gradient tool, and dragging it in to the picture. Works great, but I can only apply fade to one side of the photo. If I try to do the other side of the photo, the previous fade is undone. I have to save the changed photo and redo the Gradient tool to another side of the pic, and so on. Goal is to apply an uneven fade to transparency around the edges of a picture. I have also tried the Background Eraser, results have not been great - seems to leave a lot of pixels behind. Is there a way to do this - without repeatedly fading one side, saving, fading a side, saving, etc....?

An even easier method (CS5):
Make your selection of what you wish to keep via the Marquee tool or thru a series of Select menu options (All - Modify border (lg) - Modify Feather (sm)- Inverse).
Choose Select - Refine Edges...
Before clicking OK:
1) Adjust the Feather slider (large)
2) Adjust the Edge (left)
3) Choose Output to: as Layer Mask
4) re-adjust as necessary
Click OK and there you go. Ready to Place it into another photo or onto a background where it can be Free Transformed to meet your needs.
If you also choose Remember Settings before you click OK after you have figured out what you like then it will be even easier yet the next time you need to do this.

How do I apply a fade to the end of an audio track?

I'm using Captivate 7, and have added one of the Gallery sounds to a slide in my software simulation. I want the track to fade at the end of slide, so I guess I need to apply an effect. All the help refers to "clicking the triangle next to the audio track name" to expand the track for editing, then goes on to talk about keyframes. I don't see a triangle next to the track name, or next to anything related to the track. I am in the Effects workspace. Also, on the EFFECTS tab, all the selections are grayed out.
I also tried adding a fade by using the settings on the PROPERTIES tab, but it doesn't affect the playback.

Effects have no relation whatsoever with audio clips, I don't understand why you were looking there.
You can edit audio, and to get into the editor there are several ways. If this is slide audio, the clip is visible on the timeline and right-click menu has an option Edit. Another way is to find the clip in the Library, and the right-click menu on its name has more options, not only Edit in Captivate, but you can also use another application which I would recommend. The audio editor in Captivate is pretty limited, I'm using Audition, but Audacity is free to use.
For an easy way to have a fade out (you can time it, not the way of fading like in a real audio editor), you don't even need the audio editor in Captivate. Look in the Properties panel, part Audio and you'll have Fade in and Fade out.

Applying audio fades across multiple tracks for surround

Hi,
I am working on a concert recorded in surround, and have been given the mixes as 5 separate audio tracks. I have to fade in and out at the end of each song as there is a commentary in between the songs. But I have to apply the same fade to each track (i.e. left, right, centre) which is quite time consuming, especially when I need to change the fade length by a few frames so they fade out equally.
Is there a way to link the fades (I've linked the audio tracks - but it doesn't seem to effect fades)

You could also Map the individual Audio Tracks to a Submix Track and then apply the Fade to that. It can be easily done in Audio Mixer with Track Keyframes on the fixed Effect>Volume. You can also use Audio Mixer to "route" or Map your individual Tracks to that Submix Track.

Note: Audio Mixer will apply TRACK Keyframes, so they stay exactly where placed on that Track, regardless of what one might later do with Clips.

The adjustment brush cannot be added to a develop preset.
If you can replace the adjustment brush with a gradient filter or radial filter, you can add those to a dev preset.
If a gradient filter or radial filter is not an option for you, you can at least create an adjustment preset to remember your brush settings.

Aperture 3: How to apply keywords to multiple photos?

Hi,
I'm trying to apply keywords to multiple photos at once but if I select several photos and add a keyword in the 'metadata' panel it just gets applied to one of the selected photos, not all of them. Is this a bug or am I just doing it wrong?

But that requires that said keyword already exists which slows down the workflow when you're dealing with lots of new keywords, or even existing ones if you have lots and lots of keywords instead of just typing in a keyword (and it perhaps auto-completes). Also I'm somewhat of a keyboard-centric user

Apply transparency to letters in Illustrator

I'm trying to apply transparency to items on a logo I created. Right now, I've got lettering on a layer above an opaque circle. I'd like the lettering to show through to a transparent background rather than display as a separate color. It might help to think of the logo as an adhesive logo to be attached to a storefront window. Anything in white on the logo should be cut out and show through to the transparent glass behind it.
I tried using a clipping mask, but the circle disappears and its color is applied to the lettering.

There may be some corruption or something. You may try the list (you may skip 5) in this connexion, I believe).
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible), for CS3 - CC you may find the folder here:

5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);

6) Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

CS5 JS-Apply Transparency Question

Hello,
I am having trouble applying transparency to some ovals I'm creating with a script. I've used script in the past to apply drop shadows but this seems a little different. I'm trying to apply Feathering and Glows and I just can't seem to figure this out. The current script I am running does some basic document preperation and the ovals are going to be used by the person who builds the page. If you could help me apply the inner glow, hopefully I will be able to figure out the feathering. Thanks for any help in advance.

FCE 3.5: "fades" on photos "jerk" sometimes

When I do fades on photos (usually with a 2 sec. overlap, but it occurs with other settings too), I find some photos "jerk" into place. I'm dealing with DSLR photos at high quality. Any ideas of why I can't get smooth transitions?

Apply transparency to color in "recolor artwork" tool box

Is there any way to apply transparency to a color when using the recolor artwork box?
I am dealing with a lot of puppet warp and gradients so it would be nice if I could use the recolor artwork box,
instead of looking for all the colors manually.

No. There's no option to alter transparency in Recolor Artwork.

How do I fade photo edges to black?

I am trying to figure out how to take a photo and fade the edges of the photo to blend in with a solid black background. Does anyone know how this is done?

Welcome to the forum.
As mentioned, several ways to do this.
I like a bit of this, and a bit of that, and ending up using a Layer Mask, with the Vignetting in it.
If your initial Image has your subject on the Background Layer, Dbl-click that, to convert it to a regular Layer, and either accept the default Layer Name, or choose something like "Image Layer." Add either a Color Layer (black) below that, or a New Layer, and Fill with black, then just create your Layer Mask, based closely on CurtY's instructions above. One can add a bunch of Filters to that Layer Mask, for different "looks."
The Layer Mask, when you Save as an Unflattened PSD, can be edited and re-edited forever.
Yes, several ways to do it.

Photo editor: fade a photo and draw on top of it?

I want to "fade" JPG pictures of people and then draw on top of them with a brush tool to emphasize posture (for instructional purposes) and save as a JPG. By "fade" I mean lighten the pic so that my drawn lines will stand out.
It appears that GIMP will do this. Can you also do that with SeaShore? In their documentation it is not clear to me; I get bogged down with tech lingo about layers and transparent colors and so on. My goal is to find a tool to do the above without getting something way more sophisticated than I need. Thanks for any help.

I'm not familar with GIMP, but I can shed some light onto the layers and transparency you would need to use.
Layers are quite simple. They are like a stack of papers, you can see the page on top, and the page below if it sticks out beyond the edges of the top sheet. The same is true in photo programs. You will see the top layer, and things behind it will be obscured by the objects or images on the top layer.
Transparency is the "fade" you are looking for. Note that Opacity is the opposite of transparency (as in 100% opaque is 0% transparent). My reducing transparency on a layer, you allow the layers behind it to become partially visible, IE you allow them to sneak through.
To accomplish your goal, should should take the images, and fade them by reducing their opacity. I would start with reducing it to 70%, but you'll have to play with it to get things just right.
After doing this, create a new layer, and be sure the new layer is on top off the image layer. In this new layer, take a brush tool and draw whatever you like. You should see you drawing ontop of the photo. If not, I suspect you have actually placed your line layer behind your photo layer, and you should simply trade their locations.

Photo edges and blurring background

Hi, I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 3 that came with a scanner I purchased. To date I have not used the software and the main reason I wanted to learn how to use it was because I make hand made cards, and I take a photo of each card and place it on my blog. I would like to know how to soften the edges of the card and make the background blurry so you only see the card and not the other things in the background. Where I live we don't have a bookstore, so I have been searching online (in Australia) for text and came across one called Adobe Photoshop Elements 3 in a Snap by Jennifer Fulton. This text seems straight to the point type of text. I wondered if anyone had any reviews on this text or if there is any that people could recommend. I am not into jargon based text, but something simply written with pictures. I have previously used visual text which I found to be also very good.

To blur the background:
Select the card using the various selection tools, invert the selection, and apply a Gaussian blur as in this example from your blog:
Since the card has straight sides I used the Polygonal Lasso to make the selection.
To soften the edges of selection, feather the selection 1 or 2 pixels. You can enter the feather value either in the Feather box on the tools options bar before making the selection, or via Select > Feather after making the selection (I prefer the latter).
If you want a solid background instead of a blur, there are severals ways to do this. Perhaps the most versatile is with a Solid Color fill layer. After you have made the inverted selection, click the "Create new fill or adjustment layer" icon in the Layers Palette, and choose Solid Color. This brings up the Color Picker where you click on the color you want. You can also create the fill layer via Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color. The advantage of the fill layer is that you can easily change the color later: double-click the Layer thumbnail in the Layers Palette to bring up the Color Picker again and click your new color.

Multiple Transparent Gradients to photo

I so hope someone an respond on line right now. I have searched to find how to apply a second or third transparent gradient to a photo to blend it with another photo. I thought I remembered how to do it in CS 3. I am on Windows CS5 Photoshop and have applied one gradient. I thought you somehow commit that layer mask in then add a new one so you can continue blending the photo. However cannot find a command that works under the file at tp that reads layers and cannot therefore continue to create transparent blending. Please tell me what I am missing. This is a key tool to feeling comfortable to buying CS 5. I will await to see who responds if I can. Thanks in advance. Anita

Mylenium, it is a placed photo as a layer. Once I use the tool in one area on the mask, I cannot go elsewhere on the photo to create additional gradients to the photo without undoing. I was using the Black/white. While this may be part of the issue, in CS3 it seems you had to commit the first gradient task before moving to additional gradients to the photo elsewhere on it. I take you are saying I can make multiple gradients as long as it is not fixed. So pperhaps I need to know what you mean by fixed. I hope I make since. See below another persons response. Right now I get stuck one gradient undoing another. I will return. ::)

Can you apply edits from one photo to another

I frequently take a series of images of the same subject (usually a bird). What I often need to do is apply essentially the same edits to all of the images (I say "essentially" because I'll probably need to adjust the position of the crop and the description will also need tweaking). Is there a way of doing this directly in the iPhoto interface (if so, I can't find it)? Or indirectly by duplicating the xmp file of the first image and (by renaming and relocating) apply it to a second and other images? Because I'm working with Camera Raw images, this latter approach is easy with Adobe's Bridge but iPhoto seems to use a hashing mechanism to name the support files making it difficult to work out which file needs duplicating and where to put and what to call the duplicate.
Has anyone faced and licked this issue?

In iPhoto's Edit menu there is Copy adjustments and Paste adjustments.
This will duplicate basic edits (like enhance or adjust) but I don't think it will crop & fill in descriptions etc.
There is also the Photo's menu > Batch change that can handle Title, date & description fields en-masse. Just select the desired photos to make the menus active.

Photos app no longer displays transparent areas of photo properly. How to fix?

Hi whenever I download images to my ipad with transparent backgrounds (for use with Photoshop for example), the ipad used to display the transparent area properly as white. Then when you tapped, it would display them as black. For some reason, it now just defaults to displaying them as black. Which is fine if you have something white in color, but anything black disappears and there is no way to view it. Is this a bug? Any way I can fix this?

Let's assume you are in your camera roll. Now do the following:
1. Click on the home button once to get out of the camera roll
2. Double click on the home button. (Now you should see a number of icons on the bottom of the screen. These are the applications that are currently open).
3. Scroll sideways until you see the "Photo" app.
4. Tap and hold the Photo icon until it jiggles and there is a red "close" button on it.
5. Tap that red button and you'll see the icon disappear.
6. Click the home button once to get back to your desktop.
Now you have successfully closed the app and opening it anew will get rid of your problem.
