Hi steve fairbairn ,
I have followed the step as described however the "offset path" did not give me the required result. How much value should I put? Thanks in advance.

  • How do i add a gradient as the stroke to text instead of a solid color for PSE10

I have PSE10 and i got thsi urge to add a gradient as the stroke to a text, but don't know  how...
    help!!!!

Something like this might work for you:
    1. Ctrl or Cmd click on layer thumbnail in the layers panel with the text.
That makes a selection of the text
    2. Add a new blank layer below the text layer and go to Edit>Stroke (Outline) Selection and choose Center and the size.
    3. Select>Deselect
    4. Go to Layer>New Fill Layer>Gradient and check Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask
    5. In the Gradient Fill dialog you can experiment with different gradients and settings.

  • How do I change the Gradient in the Artwork and Effect Text tool

How do I change the colors used in the gradient under the Artwork and Effects Text Tool? It always comes green and blue and I dont know how to change it.

Gradient usually picks up the foreground & background colors from the chips in the tool bar, but that is for the default gradients. Sounds like you have one of the pre-set gradients selected in the drop down list in the gradient options bar. Select the gradient tool, then look in the options bar at the top of the screen. The second item from the left, if I remember correctly, is a drop down list of various gradient possibilities. Select the top left gradient sample for the foreground to background gradient.

  • How do you apply a gradient to a stroke?

Ive done this in Indesign forever but its not working the same way in Illustrator.  I have my gradient swatch created but when i click my stroke and give it the color gradient swatch, it always applies it to the fill.  What am I doing wrong?

    Kelly,
You should be able to do it in the following way:
    1) Create an Artbrush from a blend corresponding to a lengthways gradient (you may create a long horizontal rectangle and a short on on top of it at one end, give them the end colours, and Object>Blend>Make with options Smooth Color and  Align to Path);
    2) Create the path to follow, and copy it so you have two; hide the lower one (in the Layers palette/panel);
    3) Apply your logo brush to the path, Object>Expand Appearance, DirectSelect the spine of the path and delete it, so you have the logos alone, and with all of them still selected Object>Compound Path>Make;
    4) Show the lower copy of the path from 2) (in the Layers palette/panel) and apply the Artbrush from 1) to it; you may adjust the Stroke Weight so the lower path extends past the logos;
    5) Select both the path from 4) and the Compound of logos from 3) and Object>Clipping Mask>Make.

Indeed I believe it is possible.
...and if so, what would be the best way?
That's likely the subject of debate, depending on who you ask.
One way is to use an image that is configured with a gradient, then tile it. That's likely the way I'd approach it.
Another way is likely done using CSS to specify paramaters. Some of those here that are well versed in CSS, such as Willam, would be better equipped to answer that. Or you might use Google, I found the page below using Google.

  • How to solve illustrator cs6 save as cs5 problem about the stroke(when the stroke with clipping mask and color is gradient, save as cs5 will change to embed ).

how to solve illustrator cs6 save as cs5 problem about the stroke(when the stroke with clipping mask and color is gradient, save as cs5 will change to embed ).

Because it was not possible to apply a gradient to a stroke in CS5. When you open the file in CS5, it is reduced to something that can be rendered in CS5.

  • Gradient on a Stroke

    Hi All,
I'm a new user of After Effects... been doing bits and pieces with it for about a month. Currently i'm animating the construction of a logo using a shape layer and setting it with a stroke. To save on a long winded and potentially confusing explanation of what I have done currently here is a link to a reference that pretty much does the same as my animation currently - Dribbble - Chimera Logo Animation {gif} by Chimera Studio
I have the initial 'white' stroke and a second 'coloured' stoke on top, that appears to lead the animation... i'm trying to figure out if it's possible to apply a gradient to the leading colour so that its tail end is faded to the white? By doing so i want to see if it encourages the suggestion of motion.
If there is a means of doing this, I apologise that i'll likely need a dumbed down explanation or walk through, of how to do it... being such a beginner, some of the terminology with be lost on me.
    Thanks

There are gradient stroke options in Illustrator that are not available in After Effects.
This gives you something like this in After Effects and you can use Gradient Wipe to reveal the path.
You could then use the animation as a track matte for another layer. There are a host of possibilities. Here's a project file for you to look at. I hope it gives you some ideas.

  • Applying a solid fill after applying a gradient?

In CS5.5, I create a basic shape and apply a gradient from the Toolbox, I now want to fill the shape with a solid color from the foreground swatch, though it doesn't take the color. What do I need to do?
    Thanks.

Drag the foreground swatch {your cursor will change to a hand}, and drop the color on top of your gradient.
Also if you are in this situation, you can use the < keyboard shortcut, or click on the first of 3 swatches under the foreground/backgorund swatches.

  • Gradients not showing up in illustrator text

I've done this 100s of times all the sudden it doesn't work. I pick a gradient and try to set it to the text and the text turns to black any idea why this is happening? Gradients work fine with object but for some reasons text cannot be anything but a solid color. This is in CS4.
It might be worth noting that I can set a gradient for the stroke on text which in itself is odd as I haven't been able to do that in the past.

    Like this?
    or maybe this?
I'll try you idea too jacob cause like I said I've done this without problem 100s of times.

  • How do i apply one gradient across multiple live paint objects??

I need to apply a single gradient acros a number of live paint objects but am finding it annoyingly hard to find a way.  I know that normally, to apply a gradient across multiple objects, you would need to make them all into one compound path but does this apply to live paint groups in any way??  Can what i need to achieve actually be done??
    Thanks for any help given

    1. With the Live Paint selection tool, shift-select those shapes you want to unify with a gradient.
    2. Fill this (multi-shape) selection with your gradient. Now each shape is filled separately.
    3. With the gradient tool, drag across all of the selected shapes.
"Annoyingly hard." Is that different than "hard"?

  • Expanding the appearance of live transform breaks up fill and stroke

Okay, so I never ever use Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform, but with all the hubbub about the stroke scaling bugs in Illustrator CC 2014, I've been fiddling with it lately, and I'm confounded by something: once you perform a "live" transformation of an object, how do you expand the transformation so it's not live anymore, while retaining the integrity of your object? When I use Object > Expand Appearance, it breaks the fill and stroke of the object into two objects. Am I doing it wrong, or is this a bug?
This can't be the normal behavior, since it is impossible to expand the appearance of an ordinary stroked/filled object (the menu item is grayed out).

I can't accept that; the two issues remain:
    1) How do you expand/commit the transformation so it's not live anymore, while retaining the integrity of your object? If you can't, that's ridiculous.
    2) If this was the normal behavior, then you ought to be able to separate the fill from the stroke on a newly-created shape with Expand Appearance as well, but you can't because it's grayed out.
Furthermore, common sense dictates that the user would rarely—if ever—want their shapes to be exploded like that. Seems more like an egregious oversight than "normal" behavior.

  • When I an apply an effect in the Effects Gallery, the stroke is affected, unwantedly?

When I an apply an effect in the Effects Gallery, for example for a picture of a cloud, the stroke changes too. How do I prevent the stroke from changing? I have Cs3/Cs2. If it has anything to do w/ the Appearance panel, I don't see a fill or stroke attribute when I click the cloud. Only when I deselect it.

You must select the fill only in the Appearance panel. Silly, but that's the way it is.

  • Why does applying a gradient to text turn it black, but the text accepted the gradient fill?

This seems utterly illogical.  The text now has the gradient fill in its fill slot.  But it's black.
    Thoughts?
    Reasoning?

You cannot apply a gradient to individual characters, hence at the character level if you started with green type, applied a gradient, your type would turn black (no matter what the original color was) and would not show a gradient.
You would preferably delete that fill (to keep your postscript clean), and then click on "Type No Appearance" . Thsi taeks you to the object level of Type, and apply your gradient here.

  • Gradient across the width of a stroke

    Hi
I am trying to make a coastline on a map where the line on the one side is blue and then it fades to white across the width of the stroke.
Is there a way to do this. I don't want the gradient along the length of the line - which most tutorials seem to explain.
Thanks for any help. I am Illustrator CS.

Draw a long thin rectangle filled with a top-to-bottom gradient. Expand the gradient, then make a pattern brush. You might prefer to try an Outer Glow effect.

  • Photoshop CC Shape Layer Gradients Not the Same as CS6

I'm demo-ing Photoshop CC, and I came across an unexpected behavior when opening a CS6 PSD.
I have a shape layer that is composed of closed curves which use the path operation "Intersect Shape Areas." In CS6, I added a layer style with a tight gradient that is vertically positioned to show a certain part of the gradient, and the gradient seems to be confined to only the visible intersection of the paths.
In CC, however, the gradient seems to be applied to the entire region of the paths, and not just the intersection - as if there were no path operation performed. Here's an image to show what I mean:
The only way I could reproduce the desired effect in CC was to merge the shape components. But, I'd rather be able to keep the shapes editable at a boolean level.
Is there some setting that I'm missing?

I don't want to just start a new thread with the same topic so thought I would tag onto this one.
The behaviour described by K_SEREBY is something which I am also experiencing, and for me is a bit of a deal breaker. For files opened in CC which were created in an earlier version gradient fills/ styles on shape layers do not appear the same.
The only way to have them appear the same is to do as K_SEREBY says and "merge shape components", which is a completely destructive way of working.
It isn't something which is consistent either across Layer Styles, gradients behave as described, whereas inner glow, inner shadow and stroke for example all work as they did before, taking into account shape interaction.
Having said that using the stroke feature of vectors available on the top bar again works differently as shown in the below image. On the left the result of 3 interacting vector shapes with a vector stroke - no stroke visible. On the right the same shape with the same stroke effect but after merge shape components has been done - vector stroke visible.
It's all very confusing and not very pleasant to use, is there a work around? The video linked doesn't shed any light on the problem at hand, only highlighting something else which doesn't even show up for me when a shape is selected i.e. Live Vector Properties, but that is another story.
