"Applying" a mask?

How does one perform in Fireworks the Photoshop equivalent of "applying" a mask? That is the layer mask is actually merged with the pixel data and then the mask element is discarded.
Please advise.

Never mind. I figured it out. You simply proceed to "delete" the mask and then you are given the option to apply the mask at that point.
Thanks for all your suggestions everyone, I love you man!

  • Cannot Apply Layer Mask in Photoshop CS6

    First off, let me state that I am a *total* Ps newbie…My question regards the following: In Ps CS6, I cropped an area using the Marquee Tool. Then, I Added [a] Layer Mask from the Layers Panel. Next, I turned off the Indicates layer mask is linked to layer BUTTON, clicked the Smart Object Thumbnail, and moved the image using the Move Tool. Now, I right-clicked on the Layer Mask Thumbnail in order to Apply Layer Mask but it is de-highlighted. This is my problem. I cannot figure out how to Apply [the] Layer Mask. (I hope this all made sense.) Can someone please tell me how to do this in CS6? TY.

    Thank you for the quick reply. I started the whole process over again and went through the same steps; and, I don't know if it shows up in the screen capture, but there is, indeed, a frame around the Layer Mask Icon when I right-click on it. The above pull-down menu is what I get when I right-click on it. (BTW, this is for a CS5 online course I'm taking, and this particular Lesson is called "Generating a Non-Destructive Crop." I'm having to figure some stuff out, since I have CS6...) I hope all that info helps.

  • Why is Apply Layer Mask greyed out?

    Hi,
    Once in a while 'Apply Layer Mask' is not available.
    What I checked myself:
    -Photoshop is not in Mask mode (shotcut Q).
    -I reset all Warning Dialogs (since this is a way to get a Mask applied by dragging it to the trash).
    Can not get it to work!
    Any other solutions? Thanks!

    I found out myself - the layer was a Smart Object. Maybe I should suggest Adobe to let Photoshop ask for rasterization when Applying, in stead of just greyin' out.

  • Applying a mask and cropping so exports in Flash

    I created a Photoshop CS4 file with about 10 layers which I placed in a group.  I've applied a vector mask to the whole group so all of the pictures are masked in an identical manner.  I also cropped the group to the same size.
    When I import this file into Flash CS4, all of the layers are showing up at their original sizes (instead of the size I cropped the group to), and the mask isn't being applied.
    Can someone explain the proper way to get this layered file into Flash CS4 with the cropped size and mask intact?
    Thanks for the help.

    I'm not an expert in photoshop, but I've tried everything I know to apply the mask to multiple layers and was not able to do so, and still maintain separate layers. I selected all the layers first and tried to apply a mask, and that didn't work. Then I grouped all the layers and was still unable to apply a single mask to all layers. The only way I was able to apply a mask to all layers was to flatten the image. Given that you're importing it into flash, I'm assuming that you're animating the various layers to acheive a certain effect. If that's the case, then flattening the image to apply the mask to the entire document at once doesn't make sense. If you're using the entire image without the need for layers, then of course you can flatten the image and then use the mask to make a selection and clear the unwanted parts of the image.
    I have to imagine that there's a way to do what you're asking, but with my level of experience, I'm unable to find a way to make it happen. There may be a way to export the file to flash with the layer mask intact, or perhaps there's a way to apply the mask to all layers at once, but I'm unable to find it. I would apply it to each layer individually which may take a few more minutes, as it's the only way I can find.
    The only other option I can think of, is to place the entire psd file in a flash document directly. CS5 allows this in After Effects and Premiere Pro, which may keep the mask intact. I don't know enough about Flash to know if that's possible as well, but it's worth a shot.
    As a final suggestion, maybe you can do all of your annimation and effects in After Effects, then just save it as a Flash file. I've done this before and it's allowed me to create rather robust annimations and effects without having to learn the more complicated aspects of creating a flash document from scratch.
    Hopefully one of the CS5 gurus will see this and point the way to a quicker solution, but this is all I know to do at the moment.
    Best of luck with your project.
    P.S. To answer the last part of your question, yes, I can only imagine that as a workaround, you can make a selection from the mask and clear the unwanted sections of each layer, and then bring it into Flash.

  • Restore "apply layer mask" OPTION?

    There's a new feature where you can opt to drag a layer mask to the trash and NOT be prompted to "apply layer mask?".  This also has the "do not show again" option -which I clicked by accident. So the default is now to apply layer mask when I drag a layer mask to the trash. I can't think of any way to restore the more traditional function, without restoring all other prefs.
    So what I would like is a way to restore the more classic default where dragging a layer mask to trash give me the OPTION to apply or discard.
    Please excuse this seemingly insgnificant request, but this is a very common function that I would like to restore.
    Thanks!

    See if clicking Reset All Warning Dialogs at the bottom of Photoshop>Preferences>General resolves the issue.

  • Easiest way to apply a mask

    Hi guys.
    I think this is the oldest question in the world for photoshop but I learned a way to apply a mask to a layer but it doesn't seem a very good way.
    If I bring a 3D render and a mask over into photoshop, what would be the easiest way to apply this mask?
    Thanks.

    Make background into editable transparency layer (option double click it)

    When you say to load alpha1 channel, do you mean to load the file as alpha1? How do you go about doing that?
    And do you click the layer mask icon in the channels panel or the layers panel?
    I know how to do this in PP, naturally, but not in PS. Translating into PS, I would find the command in something like Select >> Load >> Load From Disk...
    Is there anything like that in PS?

  • Applying a mask via Transparency Panel

    I want to mask a bunch of lines to a rectangle.
    - I select the entire group of lines and choose and object > group
    - I drag the group over the rectangle
    - I double click in the open area next to the thumbnail for it in the Transparency panel to apply a mask
    Nothing seems to happen. How am I doing this wrong?

    Place the rectangle above your artwork. Select the artwork and the rectangle. Choose Make Opacity Mask from the Transparency panel Menu.
    It sounds like you want a clipping mask though...... Place the rectangle above your artwork. Select the artwork and the rectangle, choose Object > Clipping Mask > Make

  • Is there a way to sharpen or apply unsharp mask to the entire image?

    I know there is a sharpening brush under the affects brushes, but is there a way to apply a sharpening or unsharp mask filter to an entire image or layer? This would be very helpful.

    Thanks so much. Sorry I missed that first time around.

  • No luck with applying Image Mask!

    Im trying to add an Image Mask to a video clip in Motion.
    I added the Image Mask to the clip per the instructions then added one of the Brushstroke movies from the Content folder in the Library.
    The dashboard shows me that the movie is in the well.
    But Im seeing no masking going on.
    No matter what blend or source setting I choose, I see no masking.
    What am I doing wrong?

    I happened to be mucking about with the brushstroke clip the other day. If you're looking to have the image appear as the brush drags across, you can simply drop the clip on top of the image layer and set the blend mode to silouhette luma. Ya get something like this:
    http://homepage.mac.com/longstrider/iMovieTheater12.html
    I tried to apply it as a mask also, but because the pbrush is positioned at the bottom of the frame, it didn't do the trick for me.
    Hope this is helpful

  • How to undo permanent applying clipping mask,

    Hello,
    I hope somebody can help me.
    I'm having some trouble with the adjustment layers.
    I've made a selection that I want to brighten a bit, and then I make a selection in the wanted area, and choose "curves" in the adjustmenlayers to brighten the selected area.
    Then I also want to remove a little red, from only that selected area, and then i choose "colorbalance" and I "alt-click" between to two layers to adjust only the wanted area and not the whole picture, and it shows by a little "broken arrow" that it uses the previous layer to create the clipping mask.
    And that just works so great!
    But not any more!
    Because now it suddently applies this clippingmask permannetly - without me "alt-clicking". So, now when i choose "curves" the little broken arrow is there! And that annoys me big time, because I can't figure out how to make it stop. I know that I can "right-click" and click "release clippingmask" but my point is, I don't wanna do that, I want to make it stop doing that, unless I tell it to, by "alt-clicking" betwwen the layers.
    I've browes severeal forums, and the only thing I can find is how to make the clippingmask, not how to undo it (Undo it permanently, that is...)
    It must me some kind of settings... But I can't figure it out. Can somebode please help me?
    Thank you
    /Hanne

    So create a Reveal All-Layer Mask

    var idNw = charIDToTypeID( "Nw  " );
    var idChnl = charIDToTypeID( "Chnl" );

    executeAction( idMk, desc166, DialogModes.ALL );
    and use the method fillPath.
    Edit: Or rather the other way round, a Hide All-Layer Mask:
    var idMk = charIDToTypeID( "Mk  " );
    var desc167 = new ActionDescriptor();
    var idNw = charIDToTypeID( "Nw  " );
    var idChnl = charIDToTypeID( "Chnl" );

    var ref98 = new ActionReference();
    var idChnl = charIDToTypeID( "Chnl" );
    var idChnl = charIDToTypeID( "Chnl" );
    var idMsk = charIDToTypeID( "Msk " );
    ref98.putEnumerated( idChnl, idChnl, idMsk );
    desc167.putReference( idAt, ref98 );
    var idUsng = charIDToTypeID( "Usng" );
    var idUsrM = charIDToTypeID( "UsrM" );
    var idHdAl = charIDToTypeID( "HdAl" );
    desc167.putEnumerated( idUsng, idUsrM, idHdAl );
    executeAction( idMk, desc167, DialogModes.ALL );

  • Applying a mask to a custom IconItemrenderer icon

    Hi,
    I've made a subclass of IconItemRenderer in order to change the label and icon positions. I've done it without problems but i want to apply a png mask to the icon. I´m doing it with this code:
    override protected function commitProperties():void
                                  super.commitProperties();
                                  [Embed(source="assets/circulo_personas160.png")]
                                  var imagenMascara:Class;
                                  var imgObj:Bitmap= new imagenMascara() as Bitmap;
      imgObj.bitmapData = imgObj.bitmapData.clone();
    iconDisplay.mask = imgObj as DisplayObject;
    and also I tried this:
    override protected function commitProperties():void
                                  super.commitProperties();
      var square:Sprite = new Sprite();
                                  square.graphics.beginFill(0xFF0000);
                                  square.graphics.drawRect(0, 0, 40, 40);
                                  addChild(square);
                                  iconDisplay.mask = square;
    The app always shows the image I'm assining to the mask propierty instead of the image assigned to the iconField with the mask applied. If I remove this code I can see the iconField Image. It means that all the rest runs fine.
    Wich could be the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    Its so stupid that im gonna have to create three different masks in the same size and position...
    o well...
    Thanks mate..
