Applying CT template to uploaded documents

I have a document library with multiple content types.
Each CT has a custom document template with logos, doc properties, text, etc.
If I create a New Document from the Ribbon, the document gets the CT metadata
AND the document template.
If I upload a document to the library, I can assign a CT to the document so as to get the metadata, but no document template is set. It remains the default blank word doc - no logo, etc.
Can uploaded documents not have the document template assigned that is with the Content Type?

Hi,
By design, template will work only when you create new document, it won't be applied to existing document.
You could copy and paste existing content to New Document template.
You may also ask the question in Office forum and check if there is any way to apply template on existing template. Here is a similar thread for your reference:

  • How to apply a template to a page uploaded using sftp?

    I would like to upload the .html document with the appropriate template using sftp instead of applying the template using BC's back end.

    Hi,
    You cannot apply/assign a template to a page via sftp.  You'll need to action this via back-end or using DW.  Since you prefer not doing this in the back-end DW extension would be the alternative.

  • How do you make a customized template?? When I customize an original template it does not apply it to the whole document! How do you apply style changes permanently to your document???

    When one customize text styles or spacing between paragraphs. How do you apply settings permanently to a document???
    Should you create a new template???

    Happily, when you edit a document created by a given template, the changes aren't stored in the template.
    If you want to get a template embedding your changes, you need to use :
    File > Save as Template
    then use the newly created custom template as starting point.

  • Dreamweaver cannot find, and thus apply, templates after uploading the website to server

    Hi,
    I am using Dreamweaver 8, and my problem is like this:
    When the site was first built using Dreamweaver, I created a template, after which I was able to apply it to other existing/new pages by [Modify/Templates/Applying Templates to Page].
    However, after uploading all te files to the server, and then downloading them back to my computer, when I tried to apply a template to an existing/new page by [Modify/Templates/Applying templates to Page], Dreamweaver showed that there is "no template" in the entire site - despite the fact that the folder containing the .dwt file was successfully downloaded from the server.
    Also worth mentioning is that, for the pages that are already attached to the template before I sent the files to the server, they are working just fine even after I have uploaded them.
    I saved the files in the following manner:
    >ROOT FOLDER
    >>>TEMPLATE FOLDER
    >>>>>>template.dwt
    >>>indext.html
    >>>OTHER PAGES FOLDER
    >>>>>>page1.html
    >>>>>>page2.html
    I also tried to save the template.dwt directly under "ROOT FOLDER", but that didn't work neither.
    Is somebody else facing the same problem? Or does anyone know how to solve this issue? It would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Your Files panel (F8) should look like this:
    site - YourSiteName (C:\YourSiteName)
         index.html
         -OtherPages
              page1.html
              page2.html
         -Templates
              template.dwt
    If your .dwt file is located in any location other than the Templates folder, it won't work.
    Templates are not a server-side technology.  Templates only work on local files in Dreamweaver.
    I suggest you open your template and examine the code to ensure it is valid and that the Editable Regions are properly defined.
    http://validator.w3.org/
    Then open a child page made from that template to ensure it is pointing to the correct Template.dwt file in your Templates folder.

  • Applying Changes To A Template To All Documents

    hi, i was wondering if there is a quick way to apply changes that are made on a template to documents made using that template?
    basicaly i have over 200 html pages on my website, and i have made a few small, but important changes to the coding, and i was wanting to apply that to all the documents rather than manually do it.
    EDIT: by the way im using Dreamweaver CS4
    thanks in advance.

    I have never done this, and I think my question is why did not the child pages update on save of the template.
    But if you go to Modify | Templates | Update Pages, that might accomplish what you are looking for.

  • Creating a new "Link to a Document" opens Word document or upload document dialog - plus more!

    The Link to Document content type seems to be corrupted at root. When I attempt to create a new Link, either Word opens with a blank document or the "Upload" document dialog opens. It's been changing as I investigate.
    One things I've noticed is that the "Link to a Document" Content Type on the parent site collection now shows it's parent as Document. this explains why the Word document opens, but not why the Upload dialog does.
    While writing this question, I decided to check further and it seems that the other document types, Audio, Video etc.  all now have Document as the parent and are opening a blank Word document.
    Has anyone seen this behavior? How do I fix this?
    This is on SharePoint 2010.
    Thanks in advance.

    Barry Cohen

    Well, I spoke too soon. The process worked for all the custom content types, but the default Document type was still messed up. I probably should have fixed that one first, but...
    Anyhow, the Document type had no template going to the Upload File dialog rather than the blank Word document it's supposed to go to. I followed the same procedure I'd followed for the other content types, checking what worked on another site and using that
    template which in this case was a blank field:
    So, I went opened Document, Document Content Type and went to advanced settings. The template field was empty, which matched the working site, so thinking that if I saved, it would match up with the working site. I saved the Document content type and when
    after several minutes the save failed with an incredibly long list of locations where that were being perceived as "read only" plus several hidden content types that were listed as sealed. This snapshot shows a few of they many pages of content types. (I poorly
    struck through confidential info):
    Besides this gigantic error, which would require going to hundreds of locations on the site to change read access settings, which are, as far as I can tell actually not "read only" or are inaccessible, such as the hidden "System Page Layout' and so forth
    which shouldn't be based upon the default document type anyway and therefor not fixable, I need to understand why this is happening and what to do about it. I don't want to spend the next two days going over all of these libaries and content types and ending
    up back where I started with all the content types still screwed up. Afterall, I've spent about a day creating all these custom Content Types only to have the default Document content type loose its settings and corrupting everything and another day fixing
    it and having it happen again.
    This is a highly unacceptable behavior on the part of SharePoint and I would really like to fix this.
    Help is sorely needed.
    Thanks in advance

  • Error - "Exception during parsing of upload document"

    Hi,
    I am getting following error when trying to upload data with my custom integrator:
    "The upload process has completed with errors. Press Close to return to the document and fix the errors.
    Upload processing did not complete
    Exception during parsing of upload document"
    My custom integrator was created for UPDATE mode with view AP_HOLDS_V and Release_Holds API. I also added Standalone Query (to limit downloaded data to not released holds and user releaseable). Layout contains only API parameters fields (however I had some context fields, but error message was the same then).
    I am quite new to Web ADI and I still don't have full understanding, maybe someone can also answer following questions:
    - what is mapping needed for? is this to map view/table fields with the layout field?
    - how does integrator know which layout field should be mapped with parameters of API?
    - is there no web adi template to modify columns assigned to interface? is this only possible with UPDATE commands?
    - where is bne log file stored?
    I would appreciate if someone can help. I was even debugging VBA macro to see if that error is on client or server side, but it looks like it is on the server side.
    Regards

  • I applied a template to a page with SWFs and now that page does not play the SWFs. Why?

    I applied a template to a page with SWFs and now that page does not play the SWFs (just a blank area where the SWF should be). When I detach the template it will play the flash file. This site will eventually be updated via Adobe Contribute. And I just discovered that when applying a template to a page that uses HTML datasets (Master/Detail),it no longer reads the Master/detail regions and displays a blank. Any thoughts?
    [Moved to Dreamweaver forum by moderator]

    Firstly, you shouldn't really 'apply' a template to a page, you should create a child page by going to FILE>NEW>Page from Template.  Too many things can happen when applying a template the way you are doing it. eg:; editable and non-editable regions not matching up and being asked where to place these regions and in all likelihood, you end up with 2 or more of the same region.
    When a swf file is inserted into a page, a corresponding Scripts folder is written automatically is stored in the root of the site - it is also linked to in the head of the document. What I believe is happening is that when you apply a template to the page, the Template has no idea that there is a swf file on the page and is not aware of the correct link to the Scripts folder.  If you do a test and add the swf file to the template page itself, I bet that the links to the swf and the scripts folder are correct - because DW knows the correct path to the script file.   Hence the reason the page probably works when you detach it from a template.

  • Hide Upload Document item in Ribbon

    I created a document library set to use a "Document Set" content type.  I am hiding the "Document" content type, so that when a user clicks "New Document", in the Ribbon, they are only able to create a Document Set.  Is there a way to hide "Upload
    Document" item in them Ribbon at this level?  Meaning, once the Document Set is created the user should be allowed to "upload" documents into the Document Set?  I want to prevent them from uploading documents at the document set creation level.

    Hi,
    You can create a sandbox solution with the following feature\elements.xml to remove Upload document in the Ribbon. If you need this active for only one library you can either create a new Content type from document and then specify the Id in RegistrationId
    or you will have to create a new list template for you document library and specify the id of list template in RegistrationId.
    <CustomAction
        Id="RemoveExplorerButton"
        Location="CommandUI.Ribbon"
        RegistrationType="List"
        RegistrationId="{contentTypeId}">
        <CommandUIExtension>
          <CommandUIDefinitions>
            <CommandUIDefinition
              Location="Ribbon.Library.Documents.upload" />  -> verify this
          </CommandUIDefinitions>
        </CommandUIExtension>
      </CustomAction>

  • After applying a template to a page design view is blank - I can only edit in code view.

    When I apply a template to a page everything is fine. I can see the page elements in design view and code view. I can edit the page and upload it and all is fine. However, when I save the page with a new name or close the page and then reopen the design view is empty, the code view is normal. I would like to be able to see the page in the design view and cannot. I don't know what to do. I hope someone has an idea for me. Thank you.
    I am using DW CS5 and pages are ASP.

    When you say "template" are you talking about the .dwt Template file from DW?
    If so, you may be using it incorrectly. Once you create the .dwt, all of your new pages need to be created via File > New > Create Page From Template and then saved to your site. If you are using the .dwt file and doing "Save As" to create more pages, you're going to run into all sorts of problems.
    Do you have a link we could look at?

  • Applying a border to a document

    I am a very new Apple user. I have the Pages version just before the more recent Pages '08. How do I apply a border to a document?

    The Mrs.,
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
    There's no simple border command, so it's going to take a few steps. You could do it this way:
    Add a rectangular object to the page; make sure you turn off wrap (Wrap inspector > uncheck Object Causes Wrap. Stretch the object to fill the page.
    Click on the Graphics inspector; select the kind of border you want -- either a line or picture frame. From the Fill menu, select Color Fill. Click on the color swatch. Select the little box of crayons on the top right. Then click on a white crayon. You should now be seeing just your border.
    With your border still selected, click on Format > Advanced > Send Object to Section Master to make your border repeat on every page. If you don't want it to repeat, skip this step.
    You might want to save your document as a template, so you don't have to go through this every time.

  • Word cannot open file when uploaded document to document library progrmmatically.

    I have created one button in which I am uploading a new document to document library through my code. The document library contains document template.
    My code is as below:
    private SPListItem CreateDocument(SPList Docs, string title)
    SPListItem newItem = null;
    try
    SPFolder cmsDocsFolder = Docs.RootFolder;
    SPFileCollection fileCollection = cmsDocsFolder.Files;
    if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(Docs.ContentTypes[0].DocumentTemplateUrl))
    string docTemplateUrl = Docs.ContentTypes[0].DocumentTemplateUrl;
    SPFile docTemplateFile = Docs.ParentWeb.GetFile(docTemplateUrl);
    byte[] binaryFile = docTemplateFile.OpenBinary();
    string newFileUrl = cmsDocsFolder.Url + "/" + RemoveSpecialCharacters(title).Trim() + _docxExt;
    if (!Docs.ParentWeb.GetFile(newFileUrl).Exists)
    SPContentType contentType= Docs.ContentTypes.Cast<SPContentType>().FirstOrDefault(c => c.Id.IsChildOf(ContentTypeIDs.CMSDocument));
    if (contentType != null)
    SPFile addedFile = fileCollection.Add(newFileUrl, binaryFile, false);
    newItem = addedFile.Item;
    newItem[FieldNames.ContentTypeId] = ContentTypeIDs.CMSDocument;
    newItem[FieldNames.ContentType] = contentType.Name;
    catch (Exception ex)
    return newItem;
    My code does not throw any error but when I go to document library and click on uploaded document the file tries to open in word application but I am getting an error:
    "Word cannot open the file because the file format does not match the file extension. (url)"
    The browser I am using is FF.
    What am I missing? Please help.

    Hi,
    Please try to upload your document using SharePoint UI.
    If the issue still exists in Firefox, I suggest you check your Firefox settings.
    If not, please debug your code and watch the value or here is a blog for your reference:

  • Issue with Apply A Template

    Hi -
    I have a template called index.dwt created for my site, below is the top code from the template.  I've created a new file called index.html and tried to apply index.dwt but somehow it's applying old code not in the template anymore.  I've removed any file that have that old code listed below, so I have no idea how the template is applying the old code that from what I can tell doesn't exist in a file anymore anywhere in site.  It almost seems like it's cached because I did a preview of the site in chrome but I've restarted my desktop and it still populates the old code.
    Template code:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML>
    <html>

  • Applying ACL (setAcl) to Versioned Document in java - Exception thrown

    Hello.,
    I am creating a new versioned document object and trying to apply an acl using doc.setAcl();
    However I receive an exception on the step where I am trying to set the ACL (below are the exceptions with IfsException.setVerboseMessage(true) )
    oracle.ifs.common.IfsException: IFS-30043: Insufficient access to change PublicObjects Owner
    oracle.ifs.common.IfsException: IFS-10204: Cannot update security settings for a PublicObject that has a SecuringPublicObject reference
    Exact same code works when it is not a versioned document.
    What do I need to do extra, to take care of versioned documents.
    Thanks,
