Applying Keywords To A Stack

I've only been using Aperture for a few hours now so apologies if this is a really stupid question but;
How can you apply a keyword(s) to a stack?
Whenever I do it, it only applies itself to the first photo in the stack and yes I have disabled the Toggle Primary option (keystroke S). The only way I've found of applying the same keyword to all the photos in a stack is by opening the stack, selecting all the photos in that stack and then dragging the keyword onto one of them.
Purely to save time I'd like not to have to open a stack but just to select in the Browser and then any keyword I drag onto the stack is applied to all the photos in that stack.

Personally, I always use the "batch change" menu option when I want to change or add metadata to a bunch of images.

  • Applying keywords to collapsed stacks has changed

Somewhere between LR 3.4 and LR 4.3, the behavior of applying a keyword to a collapsed stack changed.  It used to be that the keyword was applied only to the top photo; now it is applied to all the photos.
This behavior occurs only for adding keywords; if you delete keywords or change flag, label, date, caption, etc. it only applies to the top photo in the stack.
Did I miss a feature announcement in the release notes?

Interesting -- I searched the forums for various combinations of "stack top keyword tag drag" and saw dozens of messages about keywords only applying to the top of the stack, but didn't find any mentioning the inconsistent behavior of dragging.
I don't believe the inclusion of this specific behaviour was discussed in the public or pre release forums. I suspect very few users, including the majority of pre release testers, were aware of it. It's not documented anywhere that I know of, but I expect that will now change...

Any ideas about the inconsistency?  If by design, what's the rationale?
Since the behaviour was never discussed I can only guess as to why the ability to drag and drop keywords works as it does and applying the keywords via the panel doesn't. Anyway, I don't view it as an inconsistency, especially since dragging keywords from the keyword panel on to a thumbnail isn't the most obvious method to begin with. For the majority of users having the ability to auto select on expanding a stack (i.e. double click stack badge or shift+click the badge) then applying the keyword via the panel is a much safer approach.

  • Bridge CC crashes when I am applying keywords

    Hello everyone!
I'm using applied keywords in Bridge to standardize our metadata and it seems that at least once every hour or so I'll be in the middle of adding keywords and Bridge CC will "unexpectedly crash" so none of my changes get saved.
Has anyone else experienced this? I wondering if it's something I'm not doing correctly.
    Thank you so much!
    Emily

Photoshop & Bridge CC (downloaded last week)
That is not the same as having the latest versions, you also ned to check for updates to be sure using the latest versions
RAW files seem ok, the problem is happening with JPEG pics
Double check if you have read and write permissions for the files, folders and disks, but first check if you can add other metadata like keywords etc to the problem files. If not it seems definitively a read write permission issue.
And also check if you have used the correct file naming with no strange characters, only one dot at the end of the filename and the correct extension (preferable .jpg).

  • Applying keyword to multiple images

I'm going through many thousands of images applying keywords. The keywords are applied with Option 1, 2, etc.
I am finding that if I have more thn ne image selected, hitting option 1 applies the keyword to the first image only. Is this expected bahavior? Is there a way for me to apply the same keyword to many images in a selection all at once?

Make sure you don't have Primary Only set.

  • Automatically Apply Keywords when file is added to folder?

I am learning to love Bridge, but the more I learn, the more I see it's shortcomings. I love the idea of automation and I use it a lot but Bridge does seem to fall a little short in the area. I could not find a way to do this so I can only hope they will add features. I want to have Bridge automatically apply keywords to any file that exists, or is added to a folder. This would save a lot of time. It seems Bridge is perfectly suited to this kind of thing, so I really hope they add some automation features!

The meaning was: Lightroom is oversized (to only buy it) for adding keywords to files. Not everyone has bought Lightroom, not everyone uses CC.
sinrise: Please give an example where Bridge can automate something. I don't know of any. Everything you do is initiated by mouse clicks.

  • Applying Keywords in Aperture - why can't I do it?

I'm trying to apply keywords to images by dragging and dropping both from the keyword HUD and the keyword panel, but nothing is happening. Nothing appears either on the image or in metadata. Am I missing something really simple (happens a lot to us seniors), or is there another explanation? I would really appreciate some help on this as I've already spent a long time with Apple & Microsoft to no avail. I thought that upgrading from 3.0 to 3.1 might help, but no luck there either. I hope someone out there can help to stop me climbing the walls!!!

I'll try be of more help to you than Microsoft
Are you trying to apply keywords to multiple photos at once? If so it could be that you're in Primary Only mode and the keywords are only being applied to one picture at a time, giving you the impression they're not being applied at all (if you're not checking the selected pic). The control to toggle Primary on/off is the S key - which can easily be hit by mistake.
    If not, try the following:
    • Select a picture.
    • Go to the Metadata pane and from the popup menu select General. You should see a Keywords field.
    • Drag a keyword from the HUD. Has it been added?
    • If not, type a keyword in the Keywords field.
    • With the same picture selected go to Menubar>Metadata>Lift Metadata. When the Lift & Stamp HUD appears deselect everything except Keywords.
    • Select a few pictures and click Stamp Selected Images in the HUD. Have the keywords been added to the selected pics?
Let us know how this goes…

  • Aperture 3: How to apply keywords to multiple photos?

    Hi,
I'm trying to apply keywords to multiple photos at once but if I select several photos and add a keyword in the 'metadata' panel it just gets applied to one of the selected photos, not all of them. Is this a bug or am I just doing it wrong?
    Thanks,
    Sam

    I see,
But that requires that said keyword already exists which slows down the workflow when you're dealing with lots of new keywords, or even existing ones if you have lots and lots of keywords instead of just typing in a keyword (and it perhaps auto-completes). Also I'm somewhat of a keyboard-centric user
    Thanks for the suggestion,
    Sam

  • Aperture not applying keywords to all selected images

OK, so I've been categorizing for a couple of days now, and everything's going fine. I'm going through around 200gb of files, applying keywords to each one.
Today, I opened Aperture and tried to start where I left off. I selected a bunch of files and dragged a keyword from the Keyword HUD to the selection, just as I've been doing all along. For some reason, today Aperture only applies the keyword to the image I'm on when I release the mouse, not the others in the selection.
Any clue what's going on here?

Ignore this post--I went through the archives and found a reference to "Primary Only," which turned out to be my problem.

  • Applying keywords to subdirectories

I have a Videos folder with lots of subdirectories, each of which contain lots of video clips.
I've applied keywords to the bulk of the clips.
When I'm at the top directory, however, I can't filter based on the keywords.
Is there any way around this (other than dumping all of my large video files into the same directory)?
I'd like to keep my videos organized in folders, but I also want to be able to search the entire parent directory with bridge's keyword functionality.
    Thanks

    Hey Curt -
I'd stumbled on that (the Find command) in the past and subsequentyly forgotten about it - and that works just as you described, giving me the option of searching through my subfolders.  This leaves 2 questions, though.
    1) First, how do you force Bridge to go through and Index the contents of a folder?  (otherwise you have oiption to search non-indexed files along with warning that could take a long time)
    2) What I'd really like to be able to do is use the Filter Panel to select from the list of keywords.  This Filter Panel, however, only seems to make the Keywords found directly inside of its root level available - so if I have a Video folder holding 10 subfolders with different types of videos, all labeled with keywords, none of those words are listed when the Video folder is selected. Instead I have to go into each subdirectory individually and add my filters there.  That's really what I'm trying to work out.  Can you start in a parent directory and filter by keyword to pull up relevant videos from all of its subdirectories.
Thanks for whatever information you can provide.

  • Applying keywords to groups of images

I'm having difficulty applying Keywords to groups of images. When I select a group of images in the browser and drag a keyword from the HUD over them, the keyword is only applied to the image onto which it was directly dropped. I'm sure that in the past I've been able to apply a keword to any number of images at once using this technique. What's the obvious thing that I'm doing wrong here?
    Andy.

"That's probably because you have the toggle primary only selected. It's the rectangle box on the far right of the first set of controls on the bottom of the screen.

Or in case you have those controls hidden you can also press 'S'

  • "Error Applying Keyword Tag(s)" in PSE 12

When I drag an album name onto an image (or vice versa) in Organizer 12 to add the image to the album I get an error dialog with the message "Error Applying Keyword Tag(s)" and the image is not added to the album. How can I fix this? Thanks.

    HI,
I don't think the rename was necessary as I didn't do that - I think it was the creation of a new album that did the trick. It must be a sort of permissions problem.
Glad it is now working for you.
Your can have the beer for me, I'm in the UK and well into my retirement so I probably won't be over there in the near future.

  • Apply Keywords from the Mobile LR App?

Is it possible to apply keywords to synchronized photos using the mobile Lightroom app?… then obviously the idea is that those keywords will sync to the desktop.

Now that Ive actually downloaded it I can see you are able to set 1-4 Stars, which is at least slightly more descriptive then the flag. Hopefully they will add keyword capability. For me, I will still do my edits on my computer but it would be nice to get through all the sorting and labeling of photos using the iPad.

  • Problem applying keywords to a selection of images

I've tried applying keywords to multiple images as described in the aperture manual but it doesn't work for me. When I drag keywords from the keyword HUD to a selection of images only the first image will contain the keyword when I check it. I get the same result when typing in the keyword menu at the bottom right of the screen.
I don't want to use the batch change dialogue because this erases all other keyword content before applying the new keywords. This is really annoying, any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

No, I've just done the same thing a few times and took me a bit to figure out. Being able to toggle this on and off is helpful if say you're adding a bunch of keywords to a selected, and one or two need tags specific to them, then you toggle this on, drop the keywords they need, then toggle off and finish tagging them all with other keywords.

  • Can you apply keywords and metadata for only some subfolders at import?

I thought I should make a separate thread for my second LR file import question.
It seems that LR authors assumed that most users would download single events or projects but that isn't the case with me.  I'm just an amateur with a Canon 30D and a 4 gb CF card.  I can get hundreds of raw files on that card and many times I won't download the contents of the card to my computer until I have taken pictures at several different events.  So I may have a birthday and a campout and some landscapes in the download and the same keywords or metadata may not apply to all of them.  LR allows me to group these different events by date in different subfolders but it looks like the metadata/keywords that you can add at download apply not to individual subfolders but to the entire download, is that right?  If I've misunderstood or overlooked something how do you apply different keywords or metadata to different subfolders at download?

As you have discovered, Lightroom applies the same keywords, metadata and any develop settings to every photo during import. The workaround to break the import down into individual events by only selecting one shoot at a time in Import dialog thumbnail window. Deselect ALL of the thumbnails then use the keyboard modifiers such as Opton/Alt, Cmd/Ctrl or Shift to select the particular shoot that you want to import.
