Applying multiple layers in an action

I've created a Contact Sheet and unticked flatten layers. So have 8 image layers(as there's 8 photos) and 8 text layers.
I want to create a levels adjustment layer attached to each one of the photo/image layers.
Can I create an Action to apply a clipping levels layer to each image layer and if so how do I do it?
Thanks.

Here's how...
Once Contact Sheet is finished be sure any layer EXCEPT for the Background is highlighted.
Record action
* Click on Background to select/highlight this layer
* While holding down "Alt" key, press ] key (right bracket) to move up one layer in Layers Pallete
* Add clipping Levels adjustment layer
then for the next layer...
* Alt + ]
* Alt + ] (again)
* Add clipping Levels adjustment layer
Repeat three prevous steps 6 more times for rest of layers.
Stop recording.
Does this help?

How to Apply adjustment layers to multiple layers that have different blending modes  and keep the colours the same as the adjusment done?
I work in Animation painting Backgrounds.  My files are sometimes upwards to 200+ layers.
I will use adjustment layers to quickly balance colours and constrast on top of those many many layers.
The only way that I know of how to apply adjustment layers it to every single layer  ( by applying I mean I need to get rid of the adjustment layers because we cant use them in production but i need the new colours be applied to all layers underneath ) in a psd is to manually do it By duplicating the adjusment layer 200+ times and  then merging each layer to one of those adjustment layers so that that layer can take the adjustment layers effect permanently.
The issue is that Within Those 200 layers I have some layers set to Multiply or OVERLAY.    IT obviously wont apply the adjustment layer properly to those layers because those layer blend mode affect the layers under them. The colour wont be the same anymore in the spots that had the multiply blended mode.
HEres an example of a simple File.  to show what i mean.

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3408266/ball.psd
I have 2 adjustment layers up top.  I need to get rid of them by applying them to each layer! I cannot merge any of the layers. We need all those layers for production.
I can apply the adjustment layers manually and this works GREAT for all Layers set to normal.  THey take on the colour change just FINE.
However, The issue is that layer 6 and layer 4 are both set to mutiply and this screws up the colour once i apply the adjustment layers to each layer manually...
How can i apply my adjustment layers to a file like this with some layers being set to multiply while keeping the layers exactly the same configuration  and The new colour taking efffect exactly how i looks before i apply the adjustment layers?
Now the simple solution is to merge the multiply layers to the layer that it affects HOWEVER I NEED those multiply layers to be seperate!
I'm assuming what I want to do is impossible? Hope this isnt confusing.  As far as i know its impossible to do what I want it to do.  but just wanted to ask and see.
I would REALLY REALLY love to talk to a adobe programmer/ technician/pro working at adobe about this.  Theres just no way to get in touch with anyone... =(
    any thoughts ?

Sure... if you want to put it that way. Either way its not the desirable outcome.
its just frustrating that theres no way to apply adjustment layers to hundreds of layers while keeping them in the same configuration ( blendmodes,  layer order ,  without merging)  while keeping the same end result.
works great if all your layers are set to normal though..    But I really need to keep shadow layers seperately and be able to adjust on the fly aswell as apply those adjusment to all my layers.
I suppose that just isnt possible.   I understand the math required for this would be tremendous/ complicated if something like this would ever be implemented.  Would be nice if adobe could come up with some solution to this.  Its really a huge issue in my work flow and theres no alternatives.    How else can I adjust colours to 100+ layers  with a few clicks that lets me play around the the adjustment until im happy with the outcome.    Really wish i could adjust and the quickly apply that adjustment to all my layers regardless of blend mode.   LIke If the Layers with blendmode could somehow take the properties of the adjustment layer and keep adjusting those layers undereathe on top of that blended mode that its doing...

  • Creating an Action to turn off multiple layers

I am using CS4 and I was wondering if it's possible to create an action to turn off multiple layers. We have to save a version of our files with only one layer showing, and to manually turn of the unwanted layers is getting to be a pain. Thanks for the help!

Ok, here goes. An example would be a template for a spatula that’s available in 5 different colors. Each color has a different layer (named for its respective color). Then there may be a flashlight that only has 2 layers (for its respective colors). Each product would then have a “foreground” layer & an “imprint” layer. These layers have the same names on every product. I need to keep the imprint layer turned on, but turn off every other layer.
Sorry if I’ve completely confused you! J

  • 3D: Deleting a mesh, applying multiple materials, "New volume from Layers"

I am learning the 3D capabilities of Photoshop CS5 Extended and have some questions that do not appear to be covered in the help reference material:
    Can I remove a mesh from a 3D Layer / scene?
For instance, after having merged two 3D layers together.
Can I apply multiple materials to a single mesh?
I can see that more complex meshes have multiple materials applied to them. Does Photoshop have the capability to add/remove more than one materials to meshes?
What is "New volume from Layer" intended to do?
I couldn't find this specific menu item in the help reference material anywhere.
    Thanks,
    B.
PS: I sat waiting on hold for Adobe tech support for 2 hours and 17 minutes with no signs of life before giving up. When I explored callback options online, the website said that no options are available for Photoshop. This level/absence of support is mind-bogglingly awful for an enterprise like Adobe. I know me grousing about it here won't change anything, but I need to get my frustration out of my system and writing it down helps.

    Hi B.,
    Can I remove a mesh from a 3D Layer / scene?
For instance, after having merged two 3D layers together.
You can only hide meshes in the scene, not remove or delete them. You have to delete the whole 3D layer to remove meshes from a document.
Can I apply multiple materials to a single mesh?
I can see that more complex meshes have multiple materials applied to them. Does Photoshop have the capability to add/remove more than one materials to meshes.
With Photoshop you can't replace an existing single material with multiple materials. There's very limited ability to edit UV mapping and you'll want to do that in a full 3D modeling application. Repoussé meshes are created with 5 materials to a single mesh object so technically, yes to your question; But that's not really what I think you're asking.
What is "New volume from Layer" intended to do?
I couldn't find this specific menu item in the help reference material anywhere.
This has applications in scientific and medical imaging, but doesn't need to only be used there. An example would be to use a DICOM format, multi-sliced imaging scan and have the layers of the scan modeled into a volume. It is really just taking successive layers and placing them at equal distance in space. The Render Settings dialog offers a few options to vary the displayed volume after it's generated.
I'll see if I can get that model tomorrow and try to find out why the menu items are not working. You're talking about the group of 4 that includes 'Hide Nearest Surface', right?

  • Using layers within an action

I am new to Photoshop and I am using CS. I am trying to resize about 2500 images that are in a single folder. They vary from JPEG, to TIFF, to EPS files. I need to do multiple steps in an "action" and also need to save as to another folder. I need to know if it is possible to do what I am wanting to do all in an action and then run a batch. I need to: resize the image, add a transparent logo (a different picture layered on), then I need to save for web. Can this be done in an action, and then in a batch on all at once? Help!

What about using snapshots, and copy/paste, instead of the history brush?
Or, you could use a path that crosses the canvas and stroke it with a very large history brush. To apply a path to an action use the action flyout menu "insert path".
I'd probably just copy/paste and arrange layers, avoiding the history panel altogether.

  • How to change blending mode on multiple layers at the same time

I'm using CS5. I have a document with about 70 layers. I would like to change the blending mode to "lighten" for each layer. Is there an easy way to do this?

Photoshop doesn't allow multiple layer editing. That's why the styles are grayed out. Only 1 layer at a time.
What version are you talking about?
CS5 definitely let’s one apply a Style to multiple Layers.
rfcommagere, I don’t know how to make it much clearer:
    • set the Blending Mode on one Layer
    • with that Layer selected create a Style with »Include Layer Blending Options« checked
    • select all other Layers that should have that Blending Mode
    • click the Style in the Styles Panel

  • How to share the same mask across multiple layers?

Say one needs multiple layers, one above another, to share the same layer mask. Is there any smart way to tell all those layers they have to use the same mask? As opposed to copying the same mask into all layers. The latter approach has the disadvantage that, when you need to change the mask, you need to copy it again into all layers that must share it.
    Thank you.

Put the Layers in a Set and apply the mask to that.

  • Custom keyboard shortcuts and editing multiple layers in Flash CS4

    Hi, all -
CS3 -> CS4 transition newb here who's getting increasingly frustrated with the new motion tweens; however, for this project, I'm working in a 3D space and require using them, so I'm dealing with this bit by painful bit. I found the tip about Split Motion, but first question: how do you apply Split Motion across several layers at the same time? I have six different tweens, and in CS3, I used to be able to shift-click or click-drag across frames and apply a command to all of them (for example, hit F5 to add frames), but Split Motion is requiring me to right-click on each and every layer. This is really laborious, and I worry about future animations that might be more complex.
Similarly, I tend to add custom keyboard shortcuts to each of my Flash versions for commands I use frequently and don't want to right-click a menu for (such as "add motion tween") - however, I can't seem to find where to create a custom shortcut for either that, or Split Motion.
Any and all help would be appreciated as I muddle through this. Honestly, guys, I WANT to like the new version and there's so many added features, but it's hampering my workflow so bad I want to pummel it with sticks.

    Hey there,
I definitely hear you about Split Motion. There is an enhancement request for supporting multiple layers, and adding it as a keyboard shortcut. The first one is tricky, but the second one is not. I think there was hope that splitting motions wouldn't be necessary much (especially since you have to be careful when doing so when eases are involved), which is why the eventual need for more functionality related to split motion was realized a bit late in the schedule.
Now regarding other operations, such as you mentioned F5 to insert frames - that and other operations (inserting certain types of property keyframes, F6, and so on) work just fine.
You can apply a shortcut to Create Motion Tween in the custom keyboard shortcut dialog.  Not all operations in the program are available though (most context menu items aren't), which is why unfortunately why we don't see Split Motion yet.
It might be possible to avoid Split Motion though with another workflow. What are you using the feature for?  Just curious in case I can help.
    Jen.

  • How do you copy a selected area of multiple layers?

I'm trying to create an animated gif using PS and I can't find out how to copy multiple layers. Right now I have 110 different layers and I want to select the same portion of every layer and copy it into a new file without flattening the image. So I want to be able to start, and end with, 110 layers. The 110 different layers are all separate pictures of my desktop and I want to crop out most of the desktop to focus on one area in particular. Is there anyway to do this?

One could delete, select next layer, delete, select next layer … which should be Action-able.
Or duplicate the image and crop it to the intended size.
Or why not simply put the Layers into a Group and add a Layer Mask to that?

  • Photoshop Mask Layer, see through multiple layers.

    Dear All -
I am a new learner to Photoshop and working on Layers and Layer Mask to obtain see through multiple Layers effect.
Below is the description of my problem that I am looking forward towards resolution in this forum. I will be glad if some expert can guide me on this.
I have three layers of different colors as below.
Layer 1topmost layer) with Red color filled rectangle.
Layer 2(below Layer 1) with Green color filled rectangle.
Layer 3(bottom most layer, below Layer 2) with Blue color filled rectangle.
When I erase something with brush on Layer 1 using masking Layer 1, it hollows the erased part and start showing the Green color of Layer 2 in hollow section of Layer 1.
What I want to achieve is that, when I erase Layer 1 using layer mask, then it should hollow Layer 1 as well as Layer 2 and should show Blue color in the hollow section of Layer 1.
i.e: Hollow section made on Layer 1(using Layer Mask on Layer 1) should also be applied on Layer 2 so that Layer 1 and Layer 2 becomes hollow using eraser and I should see through Layer 1 and Layer 2 and Blue color of Layer 3 should be visible from the hollow section.
Though I can do this by Flattening Layer 1 and Layer 2 together so that it forms one single Image, and then when I hollow this Flattened image using Layer Mask, then it will show me Blue color. But I do not want to do this, as I would lose the flexibility to unhollow/recover the hollow region on both Layer 1 and Layer 2 independently in the future.
    Thank You,
    Saurabh Khanna.

Here's a sample of copying the layer mask onto layer 2 using a hard cutout.
Here's the same thing using a soft feather cutout.

  • Dragging To Select Multiple Layers In Document Window?

I've looked this up but can't seem to make it work.  I want to select the 6 or 7 layers that make up a picture in my file.  I'm working with a file someone else created so there are dozens of layers, which makes it hard to select just a few from the Layers Pallete.
Is there an easy way to select all the constituent layers of a particular item on the document window?  I've tried ho0lding Shift down while trying to select all the layers, but that isn't effective because the layers are on top of eachother.  Is there no way I can drag my mouse and have Photoshop select every layer that is complete inside the dragged area?
    Thanks.
    Ken

Ken, Marek's response is correct with regard to selecting, (read: targeting), layers in the Layers Panel. This is good if you need to apply a transformation to the contents of multiple layers simultaneously, use alignment/distribution features on those layers, or merge them.
Your description of what you're attempting, however, suggests you want to select the pixels residing on particular layers. The way you're doing it isn't the way it works. What you want can be done, but not in the image window. In the Layers Panel, Ctrl+Click on the layer thumbnail of the first layer you want selected, (you should see the actuated selection in the form of 'marching ants' surrounding the layer's non-transparent pixels...in the image), then add the Shift key and Shift+Ctrl+Click on the layer thumbnail of each of the additional layers to subsequently add their non-transparent pixels to the selection.
Note that all you're doing here is making a selection, as opposed to selecting the contents of multiple layers. Such a selection can only target a single layer, and any pixel-altering operation you apply with this selection active will only affect one layer...not all those that may have contributed to the additive selection-building process described.

  • Multiple layers movie

At our company we have a project in which we use multiple layers (z-index) for a website.
    A background layer
    A layer with a movie-frame
    A layer with a presenter
A layer with buttons and actions
Now is my question how to resolve this best in Flex.  We were able to do it in PHP and Flash, but the result (quality) isn't optimal.
The layer with the presenter is a filmed presenter in front of a greenscreen (and then a cut-out), but this result isn't sharp enough.
Does anyone know how we can build this in Flex, with a minimal loss of quality?

  • Applying multiple blending options to same layer?

How could I apply multiple layer blending options to a single layer? Currently, when I select a blending option and switch to another, it removes the previous blending option
    Thanks.

You can duplicate the layer and set the top layer to the second blend mode. Or you can create an adjustment layer, and set its blending mode to the preferred second mode (this will blend a merged visible copy of the layers below back into the visible stack). It depends on what you're trying to do. In general though, blending modes are a blend of one layer's pixels into a merged visible copy of those below, so adding two modes to a layer seems to me impossible.

  • How to select and move objects on multiple layers

Coming from Photoshop...  how do I move the contents of multiple layers across the page at one time?
In photoshop, i would click on one or more layesr in the Layers panel, and then use the move tool to move them all on the page. How do I do that in Fireworks? It seems to be too basic to be documented anywhere I have seen but the interaction is very different. I tried  ctrl-clicking on multiple layers and sometimes is seems to work. the objects are selected and I can move them. Other times, it just refused to select anything or it only select the object within one of the selected layers.
It sort of looks like selecting a layer selects objects in that layer unless the layer has a child layer. Is that true? Seems a strange limitation if it is.
I saw a comment somewhere that suggrested grouping and ungrouping which seems a little complicated for a basic editing action. Also, if it won't select the objects on all of the selected layers.
I'm guessing that I'm missing a basic concept in Fireworks here.

I found that It worked if I selected a layer, if there is a child layer
then shift>select and ctr+click other layers or objects. You could also
lock layers/objects you don't want to move and use Select>Select All, if
    you are moving most items.

  • Scaling Effects on Multiple Layers

Is it possible to scale the effects I have applied (namely, stroke) on multiple layers at the same time?
I currently have 20 layers with the stroke applied, and it's a tedious and time consuming task scaling them individually after I've scaled the image/design (using Layer -> Layer Styles -> Scale Effects).

I currently have 20 layers with the stroke applied,
Given that you say you have 20 layers with the same stroke effect, why don't you just scale your stroke effect on one layer (as you already did) and then right-click on layer >> copy layer style after which you select the remaining 19 layers (click first, shift-click on last) and right-click >> paste layer style ?
