Applying multiple transitions

Can someone tell me how to apply transitions to multiple slides in iMovie? I want my slide duration, the fade in, and the fade out all set for 2.5 seconds each. I keep getting error messages and I'm loosing my patience. Every time I try to change a time duration, then another time changes. If I do it all individually, I have 104 slides. Thats 104 slide durations, 104 fade ins, 104 fade outs. It could take hours. Please help.
Thank you.

Thank you, Lennart. You CAN "select all" for slide duration times, I've done that. Looks like I'll be doing 208 transition times manually. I'm using iLife '04 on OSX v.10.3.9. That's the most current program for that OS.
If you find out differently, I'd be happy to hear back.
Thanks again,
Randy

  • Applying a transition to multiple clips, titles, and stills

    Hello,
I'm banging my head against the wall trying to achieve something that seems like it should be fairly simple.
I'm producing guitar instruction videos that often use still images, five or more title clips (for text highlighting concepts presented in the video), and generator clips (used for masking).  All of this is layered over the primary shot of me talking to/playing for the camera.
I'm looking into using a simple transition like "Slide" between chapters/sections of the video to prevent jump cuts.  My goal is to include all clips in the transition: That is, if I only apply Slide to the two clips in the storyline, the other clips connected to the later clip in the storyline--titles, still images, etc.--remain stationary, which looks wierd.  I want the whole enchilada--everything visible, still images and titles included--to slide over in unison.  And I want to be able to do this 5-10 times over the course of a 5-minute video, and I'll be producing 20-50 videos.  So I need an efficient workflow.
A simple example would be the edit at 1:47 in this video I producted:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3Yvef14A00
I'd like to apply a slide transition so that not only the image of my holding my guitar, but also the title "Stage 2", slid over the preceding footage.
And more importantly, what if, in addition to the text "Stage 2," there was a still image and several other titles?  How would I get all of them to slide over together?
Storylines don't seem to be the answer--You'd have to create a different one for each additional clip, which seems cumbersome.  And compound clips and transitions don't seem to mix well--when I try to transition between compound clips I'm told there isn't enough extra media to create the transition.
    Thanks so much,
    Rob

Thank you Jakob, this will make things quicker once I know how to apply the transition.
But it doesn't answer my primary question: How to apply the transition.
Maybe some screenshots would illustrate the problem:
    Image 1
    www.heartwoodguitar.com/temp-imgs/1.png
Here the playhead is just before an edit point between two sections: The Guitar Strap section and the Capo section.  Right now, a single still image is visible (dude with a chain for a guitar strap).
    Image 2
    www.heartwoodguitar.com/temp-imgs/2.png
Here the playhead is at the edit point where I want to apply a Slide transition.  As you can see, in addition to the clip in the storyline (video of me holding my guitar), there are four title clips and two generator clips.  I'd like all seven of those clips to slide across the still image of the dude with the chain guitar strap.
    Does that make things clearer?

  • How do you apply a transition to multiple clips? NOT using default transition.

    Using CS6
I have videos on one track and titles on another track. I want to apply dissolve to black for the videos and gradient wipe to the titles.
Right now I have to assign dip as the default transition, select all the video, and apply default transition. Then find the gradient wipe, change *that* to the new default transition, select all the titles, and apply default transitions. Then I have to go back and reset my default transition to gradient wipe since that's my "main" default transition.
Uhhhh... why can't we just select a bunch of clips and drag ANY transition to the selection and have it apply just like regular effects? Why force us to do this complicated singular default transition dance?

What you need to do is to select the clips and enable trim (some red brackets will appear at the beginning or end of the clips).
I just marquee drag with the Roll tool to select the edit points.

  • Multiple Transitions 'End-at-Cut' shortcut?

I am trying to find a way to apply a cross dissolve that ends at the cut to multiple cuts.
i realize that this can be achieved by either placing it there in the first place, or dragging the transition after it has been placed. however, i have many transitions to place, and i am trying to find a time saver.
can this be achieved with a customized transition preset? can this placement be set as the default transition placement? can multiple transitions be moved at the same time?
    any thoughts?
    thanks.

    Thanks for the responses.
I have many cuts in my timelines, i usually select them all and apply the default transition.
i would then like to use the 'go to next clip' keyboard shortcut and doublecheck for any last minute color correction, but it lands me smack in the middle of the dissolve.
so i usually just manually click on the middle of each clip and thats a bit of a hassle. oh well.
    thanks though.

  • Multiple Transitions for One Selection?

This is the flip side to the threads on how to apply a transition to multiple edits simultaneously -- and a search of the manual, this forum, and some Googling has yet to find an answer.
I need to apply/combine two different video transitions to the same edit. Anyone know of a workflow and/or workaround that could achieve this?
Specifically, I want to create a transition which combines the Zoom transition from the 3D Simulation effects folder, with the Dither Dissolve from the Dissolve folder. The effect I want to achieve is to have the outgoing clip shrink away to reveal the incoming clip, and, at the same time (while that outgoing clip is shrinking away), to ALSO have it be dither dissolving into the new, incoming clip.
So far the closest I can get is to put the incoming clip on a separate, overlapping video track and apply the dither dissolve to its head, while immediately below it (on V1), I apply the Zoom to the tail of the outgoing shot. But this doesn't get the exact effect I want, since the dithering affects the full frame of the new incoming shot, whereas what I want is for the dither dissolve to only be happening within the ever-shrinking frame of the outgoing clip.
Does that make sense? And if it does, am I S.O.L. -- or just in for a whole lot more trouble than this effect is worth?

(I'm not at my FCP machine at the moment, can't test it.) Because these are transitions, you may not be able to apply them like you can filters; they must be applied between two overlapping clips. That could make this a bit difficult.
I suggest you copy and place the outgoing and incoming shots in separate sequences because you're going to render them and export them separately as movies.
Apply the zoom to the outgoing shot. Render and export. Find the clip and import it. REplace it in the original sequence and now apply your dither transition between the zoom movie and the incoming clip.
The reason you want both clips in separate sequences is so you can play around with other effects. You could nest these, too. But rendering them will lock the media. Just be sure to export a self-contained movie and do not attempt to import the render file.
Does that make sense? And if it does, am I S.O.L. -- or just in for a whole lot more trouble than this effect is worth? < </div>
It's really hard to try to describe these things in these little posties. I have no confidence that I understand exactly what you're hoping to do and none that I've offered a possible solution. But please let us know how you make out.

  • Multiple transitions in one slide show

When using iDVD is there a way to apply transitions onto specific slides in a slideshow so that one slide show can have multiple transitions throughout? also is there a way to control the time of each specific time - ex one should be for 5 secs and the next for 3 secs?

You may want to consider an alternate app that specializes in slideshows.

  • Wanting to use multiple transitions on 1 slideshow?

I want to make a slideshow for graduation party. This will be played continuously. I want to incorporate different transitions on one. I've read that you can to do it if you use slideshow from iphoto. I can not seem to get past the files when I click on media, photo. Slideshows don't show up. This is my first attempt with wanting to use multiple transitions. I've made DVD's with chapters. Plus, I never have used it as continues play. Any help and ideas would be a welcome.
    Thank you,
    Lisa

In iPhoto, put your photos into an album. Then, open your album to display the photos that you put in it. Select all the photos. At the bottom of the album display window, there will be an icon called Slideshow. Click on it, and the photos that you selected will be placed into a slide show with a separate icon in the display panel. In the slideshow transition settings, select Random. That will play the available transitions at random.
If you want more flexibility than iPhoto's "Random" setting will give you, you will need to create your slide show in iMovie where you can manually insert any of iMovie's transitions. Then drag your iMovie project icon (the one with the star on it) into the window of your iDVD project.

  • How do I apply a transition to a group of clips?

    Hi,
I want to apply a transition to a group of clips. I know how to select a group of clips, but I have not found how to apply the same transition on all of them. Can this be done in FCE?

let:s say I want to apply the default transition to the group, how do I do it?
Place the playhead at the start point in the Timeline.
Select a group of clips that are contiguous.
Drag them to the Canvas Overlay, Overwrite with Transition.
Note: Media Handles must be available or you will get a warning message.
And do I understand wright that I could also do it with a unique transition that I would place it in my >Favorites Bin? How would I do that?
A Favorite works differently. There's no way to alter the Default transition in FCE. The Default is always a one second dissolve.
To make a Favorite you can open an existing transition in the Timeline by double clicking it or just open a transition into the Viewer directly from the Browser. Existing is best as you can setup to see any changes in the Canvas.
It opens in the Viewer with the controls showing.
Placing the Playhead over the transition in the Timeline will give you immediate feedback of the changes in the Canvas.
Make any adjustments like timing, angle, color etc.
Look for a small hand icon at the top right of the Viewer.
Click and drag this to the Favorites Bin.
You will now see the new transition available for use with any new values.
This Favorite can now be used as a transition in the usual way.
There is no way to add the Favorite to more than one clip at a time.

  • Multiple still images imported (how to change timing AND do multiple transitions)

I imported into the project resources many still photos.  The defaut time for each seems to be 5.1 second.  If I drag them into the timeline, select them all and change the duration there are time gaps between images...how can I scrunch them together easily OR how can I change the default time duration before I drag them to the timeline?
Second...if I have all my photos on a timeline can I set the transition effect on more than two at a time?  Can I set the transition for all of them at once (a different query)
    Thanks,  -bill

When you've selected your still and used the Speed/Duration command, be sure to tick the "Ripple Edit, Shifting Trailing Clips" option in the panel. That will remove any empty space between clips that would otherwise be generated when decreasing the duration of your clips.
Second...if I have all my photos on a timeline can I set the transition effect on more than two at a time?  Can I set the transition for all of them at once (a different query)
Yes, though there are two preliminary steps. First, in the Effects panel click the flyout button (that stack of pancakes with the little downward facing arrow) or go to Edit > Preferences > General and select the Default Transition Duration option and change it to your desired setting. Second, in the Effects panel, select the transition you want and right-click it and select "Set Selected as Default Transition".
Now, select your clips/stills in the timeline and go to Sequence > Apply Default Transitions to Selection; the transition you just set up will be applied to all of your clips. Note that, by default, this will add audio transitions as well, if you're using combined video/audio clips (probably not a worry in your case as you're using stills), but you can hold down the Alt key to select just the video or just the audio portions of your clips, if you only want one transition type or the other. You can also temporarily lock any tracks where you don't want transitions before you use the command.
Also, since you're working with stills, you don't have to worry about handles; if you import a still into Premiere, even if its duration is only a single frame, you have an indefinite/infinite amount of frames to use for editing and transition purposes. Video/audio clips are a different story, of course...

  • When applying a transition between particular clips it only applies to the end of the previous clip and will neither 'Center on Edit' nor 'Start on Edit'. I'm kind new to FCE 4 so please excuse my inexperience.

This indicates that you only have handles available on one side of the edit point. If the transition ends on the edit, that means that the next shop begins on the first frame of the media file and there is no room for it to extend and create the necessary overlap.

  • Trimming multiple transitions simultaneously.

Didn't we use to be able to trim multiple transitions simultaneously? For instance, having a cross dissolve on a clip on video track 1 as well as on audio track 1. Selecting both clips and dragging to trim the transition which adjusts both video and audio together. Also if there was video on tracks 1-3 and you wanted to trim all the transitions the same.
Now it seems that you have to click and drag each individually. I always hated that final cut operated like that and now premiere?

Logical would be if more than one item is selected then the all are manipulated. Also efficient.
A video dissolve doesn't infer an audio cross mix. It's very common at the end of a segment to fade to black. Fading the audio at this time is also a good choice. If you added a default 1 second dissolve to the video and also to the linked audio and then decided to increase the transition duration of both at the same time you can't. Move one then the other. Inefficient.
Perhaps a better example would be when you have two mono channels linked and add a cross fade transition to both. You're likely want to adjust them the same. Moving one the. Having to move the another to match is very wrong.
I've never noticed it being an issue before which is why I believe there has been a change. I'm hoping someone will have a solution.

  • Help, how to apply multiple style to a component

In HTML we can write class="styleA styleB" to apply multiple
style, but it's not allowed in flex3.
So is there a way to walk around? like
    .styleB{
    //include styleA
    }

You have to combine all songs into one file by using software, for example Audacity.
PS: I owe this knowledge to a post by Victoria Bampton.

  • Can't apply audio transitions over some sequence joins

I have a rough cut sequence I'm putting together and am trying to apply a cross fade over 2 sequences. For some reason I can't apply the transition over the splice area...it will go to one seq or the other (icon is |= ) other parts work fine (icon is =|= )
    There are 6 seq's in this cut 4 transitions work as I expect...2 don't
any ideas what I'm doing wrong???

For every clip you put on the timeline there is a clip in and clip out.  The clip also has two physical ends of the media file.
If the clip out of the outgoing clip is the same as the end of the media file, OR, the clip in of the incoming clip is the same as the start of the media file, you cannot place a transition--there must be overlap for most transitions.
Go to the junction between the two clips you are trying to place a transition:
Using the trim tool, drag the clip out of the outgoing clip back an amount equal to 50% of the transition duration
Using the trim tool, drag the clip in of the incoming clip forward an amount equal to 50% of the transition duration
If this created a gap between the two clips, do a ripple delete of the gap.
By dragging the clip in and clip out with the trim tool, you moved them away from the physical ends of the media file  you now have what Harm refers to a handles.  You can now place your transition.
As Harm said: "Read the manual," and everything will be made known to you.

  • Trimming a clip after I apply a transition

I tried a search on this one, but no luck..
So I've got a clip in the the timeline, and added a cross dissolve to the end of it for a fade out. Is there a way to trim the clip without deleting the transition off the end of it first?
    Thanks!

If you're familiar with trimming using the keyboard, do the same thing you would if you didn't apply a transition. That is, (carefully) select the edit point (and not the transition) and use the [ and ] keys (with the Shift key, if you're looking to work several frames at a time) to trim.
Or is that not working for you?

  • Question about multiple transitions in imovie6

Hi all.......I am in the process of converting old mini DV tapes to DVD. What I would like to do is to put a transition between each clip. This is no problem to do manually of course, you just drag the particular transition between 2 clips.
But this becomes cumbersome with a video that will have 30-40 clips. I have been looking for an option to allow the program to just place multiple transitions automatically, where the programs not only places the transitions but also varies them also. I can't find this option within I movie.
I have used this opition in Roxio products.
Do I have any options for what I am referring to? A I missing something?

Sorry but there is no such option in iMovie nor iDVD6. Needs to be done manually as you stated above.
You may also want to send apple some feedback (see iMovie Feedback) on this transition request where the application not only places the transitions but also varies them for all imported clips directly to the timeline. It just might be something apple can do for future versions via a dialog box check mark under preferences for iMovie. Good luck and great idea by the way!
