Applying results of healing brush to a new layer?

Is there a way to use the healing brush or spot healing brush by applying the changes you are making to a new blank layer instead of the original layer?
Thanks.

With the spot healing brush make sure you have sample all layers checked
before healing on blank layer.
With the healing brush make sure you select either Sample current and below
or Sample all layers before using the healing brush on a blank layer.
Also if you have any adjustment layers you can click on the button to the
right of the sampling options to ignore adjustment layers when healing.

  • PE9 trouble with clone/healing brush on a new install.

    Hi,
I have PE9 installed on my desktop and the program works perfectly and it also was fine on my previous laptop. Due to an accident I had to get a new laptop and that is where the issues have started.
The Clone and Healing Brush cannot be resized using the [ ] keys. I can work around using the size button on top of the image viewing area but it is much slower doing that.
Using the Quick Selection Tool I am not able to remove it when finished by pressing the Esc key. I have not found a work around for that. Ctrl-Z will eventually remove it but it also removes any changes made first!!
There could be other tools that have issues but I haven't found them to this point. Other tools are working normally. I was wondering if it was some sort of keyboard switch not working but I was unable to find anything in the laptop manual. All keys do work properly. It is a Dell Inspiron as was the previous unit.
I have unistalled the original install of PE9 and reinstalled it. Same problems. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Cyril

    Hi Barbara,
Thanks for taking the time to help me. I tried your suggestion but no luck. However I found something by "stumbling" around. I changed the keyboard setting to US from Canadian Multilingual Standard (which was the way it came to me) and that fixed the issue with the keyboard shortcut of brackets [ ]  to resize the: Healing Brush, the Clone Tool, the Dodge and Burn tools. They work fine as long as US is selected for the keyboard language.
As for the use if the Esc key, after working with Adobe we found that the Esc key on my BRAND NEW laptop was not working!! I guess that explains why the Esc key shortcut wouldn't work in PE9. Oh my, you gotta love our new technology!!!!!! That then led me to a couple of hours on the phone with Dell about replacing the system. The joy just continues to flow. :-))))))))))))
Anyway, Adobe had not heard of the "Canadian Multilingual.. keyboard selection" being a problem for PE9 and those keyboard shortcuts, so if anyone else has this issue, try that! It worked for me. I am definitely tired of the phone after today. Hoping for a smoother day tomorrow. All the best.

  • Clone or Healing Brush Tool Creates Ghost Layer or Image - Unusable

I am using the latest version of Photoshop CS5.5 on a fully updated MacBook Pro.
I am having issues with the following tools:
    Clone Stamp Tool,
    Healing Brush Tool,
    More details:
Essentially it "appears" that Photoshop is duplicating the layer and the layers appears to be dragged whenever the cursor is moved. I do not need to be holding down the mouse button for the layer to follow the cursor.
If I click outside of these tools then photoshop functions as normal, and this extra layer-effect disappears. Clicking back to those tools however causes it to reoccur.
From testing, when first selecting these tools (on program startup) nothing occurs. It's only when I select the target area (option+click) to use the tools does this problem begin.
I have checked, and no layer is duplicated. It is also a single image (so not a copy on top of the original).
I have been using Photoshop for a few years now and familiar with it's interface and functioning. Initially it was working fine on this laptop, however in the last few months this problem has begun and persisted. On other computers it is functioning fine. A complete uninstall and reinstall of Adobe on the laptop has made no change either.
Please can someone help? Thanks in advance for any assistance or guidance you can provide.

I am not saying that this will absolutely sort your problem but it is a good place to start.
Try resetting your Photoshop Preferences. Check out this post for instructions.

  • Spot healing brush preset

Hello. I have a couple of hot pixels on the sensor and removing them individually from each picture is time consuming. Is there a way to apply the spot healing brush on one picture where needed and copy the brush strokes onto the other pictures since the spots remain stuck in exactly the same places on all images?
In other words I'd like to batch-heal all images at once.
    Thank you,

So, first I have to make a selection/s and then Edit - Fill - ... ? If so, which tool would be best to make my tiny selections?
No, it doesn't have to be a smart object.
I'm kind of envisioning tying an action to a key that you can press when you're editing your document and want to make the change, but how you want to use it is entirely up to you.
Actions can seem a bit geeky, but once you get the hang of recording your steps as actions, and get used to the editor in the Actions panel, they can be quite useful for making repeatable functions that can be surprisingly complex.  To record an action, name it appropriately then just do the operations you want to repeat on a representative image, then stop the recording.  Brush strokes won't record, but most everything else will.
Since hot pixels affect probably 1 or maybe as many as 9 pixels, I'd suggest just using the rectangular marquee tool to make the very small selections (you can, of course, make more than one by holding down the shift key).  Note that this assumes you'll be using the same sized images each time, and as I mentioned the locations will be different for a portrait and a landscape image.
    Have fun with actions!

  • Healing brush opacity?

In PS CS4, how do I get the color to transfer to new location so that underlying color does not show through? I see no setting for opacity for this brush.
    I'm new, thanks.

Hmm, It seems to be working differently for me now. Probably me being tired . I guess I'm just learning how it works. Here are some tests I just did. The top left is a cloned section using the Healing Brush with the "Current Layer" setting - looks identical to the original (even when not sitting on top of the original bg layer), and also looks just like the Clone Stamp (using either setting). The  bottom left is a cloned section using the Healing Brush with the "All Layers" setting – NOTICE THE BLENDED OPACITY (as one would expect it to work).
I guess this is the normal difference of the two different Healing Brush settings...?
I'm working in both CS5.1 and  CC (trial version). Thanks.

  • Spot Healing Brush strangely acting as a cloning tool

I removed the text within the speech bubble below, then I applied the Spot Healing Brush to remove the character outlines left over.  The speech bubble has gradient pink background color, and that's what I was expecting to see after my spot healing brush application, not weird images coming from the lady's body.

    >What are your settings in the Options bar?  I have a feeling you might have 'Proximity match' selected.<
    No, I'm on "content-aware".
    >Does this happen with all images, or just the one you have shown?<
    Just on this one.
    >How many layers does this image have, and what is on the underlying layers?<
    two layers.  White background.

  • Healing Brush on Blank Layer CS3 vs. CS5

I just recently upgraded from CS3 to CS5.  I have a lot to catch up on since it's been a few years since I was heavy into the photography.  One thing I noticed was that PS wouldn't let me use the Healing Brush on a blank layer.  My old method on CS3 was to open a file, create a new layer, leave it blank, select that layer, and sample/heal all within that layer.  I tried to do this on CS5 and it's not happnening.
Is it still possible to work the way I did in the past or is there a new method of using the Healing brush on a blank layer?   I don't like working directly on the background image.

Awesome, that's the solution.  Been a while since I was in action...this was one of those "Duh?!" moments, thanks!

  • Healing Brush = Clone Stamp when used on separate layer?

I can't find corroboration on the web so I want to konw if anyone here has seen this - when using the Healing Brush tool in Normal mode, the opacity of the cloned pixels when painted onto the same layer as the source pixels will usually be decreased to blend better, BUT if the cloned pixels are painted onto a separate layer (to work non-destructively) the tool will NOT decrease opacity and the Healing Brush will work more like (if not exactly like) the Clone Stamp - true??

Hmm, It seems to be working differently for me now. Probably me being tired . I guess I'm just learning how it works. Here are some tests I just did. The top left is a cloned section using the Healing Brush with the "Current Layer" setting - looks identical to the original (even when not sitting on top of the original bg layer), and also looks just like the Clone Stamp (using either setting). • Healing Brush's sampler remains active, wreaking havoc

I am a first-time user of Photoshop Elements (8, just arrived today), but I think I've discovered a bug:
When I try to use the Healing Brush, I Alt+Click on an area I want to copy, and then begin painting over the blemishes. However, the pixels replacing the blemishes are NOT what I clicked on, but are constantly changing, and I see a second cursor over to the right that is sampling pixels as I paint/heal. If the second cursor (which moves in lockstop with my mouse movements and the cursor I'm controlling, but off to the side) moves over a black spot, my brush paints black; if it moves over a thick line, a thick line is painted in the area where I want to "heal."
Is this an undocumented feature, a new bug in APE8, or what?
IOW, rather than continually applying the same thing (what I Alt+Clicked on), the Healing Brush is mirroring whatever the "ghost" cursor is over.

You have the overlay option turned on. When you drag rather than click, the healing brush and the clone stamp will automatically sample in a pattern following the movement of the brush, beginning where you alt clicked. You can turn the overlay off in the options bar, but you can't keep these tools from going into aligned mode when you drag. (The overlay is new; the aligned-when-dragging behavior isn't.)
The dark area under the cursor is to show you your stroke more carefully. It has no effect on the final result any more than the marching ants type outline in previous versions. It's just a visibility aid.

  • Pen tool/path and content aware spot healing brush to remove cables (CS5)

Tried to remove some cables from an image using Russel Brown's video making use of the pen tool/path and the spot healing brush with content aware.  I'm pretty sure I followed his tutorial exactly but it did not work satisfactorily.  Are there any other tweaks I should be using to remove these cables and replace them with the background details?

    Yes to all.
Silkrooster  - Looks great!  However, I believe spot healing brush was the first I tried and got smudgy results, especially in area of the locks where there is a lot of detail behind the cables.  Found the patch tool works best, but not where there is a lot of detail behind the cables.
Fosse - Well, the bow of the ship going through the Panama Canal at 6 AM in the morning is a popular place, very crowded, and not one of them a photographer.  I was lucky enough to get the last spot which was dead center, but in front of the cables.  I tried to prevail on some people next to me to trade spots, but none were willing ($##$!!!&& b---ds) and they didn't even have cameras.  However, will keep your suggestion in mind about taking two shots for the next time...and will have to get up earlier.
I think if I want to really make this work, I will have to do a lot of work, probably using a combination of all these methods.
    Thanks to you all.
By the way, Re my question on screens without a reply button...when I click on a response, it appears without any reply button.  How do I get a screen showing the reply button without entering a new question, cancelling out of it, and then clicking on a response, which is the only way I found to get a screen showing the reply button.

  • Spot healing brush alignment problem

Using Photoshop CS4 (11.0) on a Mac with 10.5.6. Sometimes the spot healing brush works as expected. However, after working for a while, the alignment seems to be off--I hover the cursor over the spot I want to retouch, but when I click the mouse the area retouched is a bit (1/4" or so) below the spot healing brush cursor. If I quite and restart Pshop the problem goes away. This is with the spot healing brush--not the one where you need to select where to clone from. Is something wrong, or is there a new feature I don't know about that's causing this? I've used the spot healing brush quite a bit with CS3.
If anyone has any thoughts, I'd appreciate hearing them. This is getting frustrating.

I think you are talking about a different issue here. This problem is not specific to the spot healing brush.
@ OP: The brush alignment problem is very real and I have it frequently when working with larger files (approximately >500MB in memory). I have two macs, a macbook (GMA X3100) and a mac pro (ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT). So two completely different hardware arrangements that have the exact same problem. This is clearly not a problem with graphics cards.
Drawing with any tool like: brush (any brush - dodge/burn, blur, eraser etc.), lasso (any lasso), line, crop tool etc. will result in a misalignment of about 0,5 cm directly downward. However, clicking on menus and dialogue boxes works as expected. Switching off OpenGL features in PS WILL NOT PREVENT THE PROBLEM (if I shout, maybe Adobe will hear...). The same problem appears whether I'm using a Wacom tablet or a mouse. It even appears when the Wacom driver is uninstalled.
So, if Adobe is not acknowledging the problem it's safe to assume it will be featured in CS5 as well.
@ Jim: Sorry, I would have posted in the other thread but your link does not work anymore.

  • Photoshop CC and 2014 spot healing brush tool causing blue screen on windows 8.1

    Hi,
The problem is when I'm using spot healing brush tool soon as apply it it causing fatal error on my windows. I have all suite up to date.
    please advice.

First thing to do is check you have all the latest device drivers for all your devices and all windows 8 updates. Printer drivers, Display Drivers, Network drivers etc.   It is not possible for an Application program like Photoshop.exe to cause a Blue Screen. However Applications use devices and device drivers are able to do things application programs can not do.

  • Problem with Healing Brush Align Function

I am running Photoshop CS5 on a Mac and I am having some trouble with the healing brush tool.
The behaviour seems to be the same whether I have 'Align' ticked or not.
I first select the area I want to sample from using alt-click. I then use the healing brush to paint over the area I want to repair. The cross-hair showing where the pixels are being sampled from moves as I move the brush around. I assumed this would only happen when 'aligned' is ticked but it happens all the time, meaning it paints unwanted pixels.
What I want to do is keep sampling from the orginal point, not for it to move as I move the brush.
Is this expected behaviour or am i doing something wrong?
    Many Thanks

It really would be good to be able to see a sample of what you're getting to make sure we're on the same page.  Do you have another browser you could use?
How hard is the brush you're using to paint with the Healing Brush?  I find that a hard edged brush often works best.
The Healing Brush tool derives the color it uses for mixing from its surroundings, and it can often look further than just the adjoining pixels.  If you use it very close to a place where the color changes a lot you'll see something like what you're describing.  I just avoid using it near contrasty places and if I see this I just use other means - e.g., the clone tool.
Note the difference in results below, when the Healing Brush tool is used on these two spots with the same brush:
