Applying Transitions

Hi,
Is there a way of applying the same transition between multiple clips at once rather than dragging them between each pair of clips one at a time?
Thanks
Jim

Right click on the transition you want as default and select "Set as default transition".
Then go to the Media Bin (in the Edit tab not the Organizer tab) and select (Crtl + click on each still/clip, or use Shift and select first and last) the stills/clips you want in your video. At the top of the Media Bin click on the "More" button and select Create Slideshow (or right click on the clips and select Create Slideshow). Set your options and the video will appear on the timeline with the default transition.

  • How to apply transitions between clips in the same track?

    Hey guys,
I'm in Uni on Final Cut Pro 5 and all the videos and discussions tell of how to apply transitions between clips in the same track.
I like to have my clips on different tracks so that I can overlap them at specific points but I don't know how to do this?
If I have track one. . .which ends. . .and have track 2 beginning below that (and have it overlapped for a few seconds) I don't know how to enable the transition at the point where track 2 begins.
    Can anyone help?

    Yep I understand that.
Let's say I overlap track 2 as I don't like the beginning of it. . .so I want the transition from the end of track one to track two to occur in the middle of track 2 - should I just trim the track to the point I want the transition to occur as opposed to have it overlapping?

  • How to apply transitions to objects Cp5?

    Hello all...
I would like to apply transition effects(fly, blinds, etc) to objects like rectangle, highlight box, text caption, etc.
Can anyone suggest me to add more animation effects(as much as possible in Cp) to give my project a good look as if it is created in Flash.
    Thanks,
    Kartik.

    Hello Kartik,
I suppose you already explored the Effects coming with Captivate 5? And that you already tried out combinations of those effects (that can be stored as new customized effects)? You can already have a lot of transitions created that way.
If you have Flash CS5 you can create other Classic tweens (not the Motion tweens), export them as XML (Commands menu) and import them as new customized effects in Captivate to have them available. Would that do?

PS: in another thread I just did see that you are considering upgrading to CP5, perhaps this (old) blog post could help you about customized effects:

  • Applying transitions in the timeline

Hi, I have recently created a dvd of videos and stills but when viewed on a tv the stills are pixelated. I originally created the sequences in premiere and rendered them out as mp4, to use in encore. However, when the the movie is played the still images look pixelated and in some it very noticeable.
So i thought i would just try and create the whole thing in encore, i'm not doing anything complicated just putting stills and videos together with music and with fade transistions between each clip.
Putting the assets together is no problem but i can't find away to apply transitions between clips in encore. I know you can in a slideshow, but a slideshow doe snot accept video files.
It seems really absurd to be that i can't create a still/video mix without one type being bad quality.
I am aware that this post could go in the premiere forum but hoped someone here might have an answer for me.
I am renerding out my sequences from premiere as mp4s h.264, as they produced a descent file size and didn't degrade in quality when compared to an avi or mov.
    Any ideas would be apprecitated
    Thanks,

I am using the cs4 suite.
I am not trying to create a bluray disc, i don't have a bluray writer or reader, i just got the best output and smallest size using h.264; instead of 800MB or sometimes over a GB for about 6mins of footage, i got it reduced to 200MB. I am a bit unsure of the best formats for this type of thing.
My output size is 720x480 as that is the size of the videos taken, they are in avchd format, and each picture is scaled down using PRs "scale to frame size" function, all of the pictures are good quality either from a DLSR or similar so the qulaity of the images before render is not the issue.
What is the best export format from PR for a mix of still images, audio and video? The images look good on my computer screen just not on the tv or when projected.
    Thanks for all your help

  • Can not apply transitions

This is my first try with FCP 7. And the first time I need transitions..
I have about 40 clips in the timeline, each 15-25 sec long. Whenever I want to apply transitions, I get the same message: "There was insufficient media at one or more edit points. Would you like to accept the others?"
Don't know the meaning of that!
My clips are long enough for a 1 sec transition.

Clip handles are editing 101. In order to create a transition between two clips, there needs to be enough EXTRA media aside from the length of the clips to cover the length of the transition.
In other words: If you have two 5 second clips in your sequence, and you want to do a 30 frame dissolve between those clips, you need 15 frames extra at the end the first clip and 15 frames extra at the beginning of the 2nd clip in order for the dissolve to work.
Try trimming the beginnings and ends of all the clips in your timeline, and then apply your transitions.

  • "apply transitions using" is missing in my preference dialog box!

Why do I not have the "apply transitions using" in my preference dialog box?

    Clodimedius wrote:
There is a way to avoid using the overlap mode, which is very simple.
Instead of using Command T to apply the default transition and shorten the video, drag the transition from the list of transition in the media browser effects library on the right.
This way, the default overlap mode is applied, instead of using the available media.
I am sorry, but this is just wrong. The default option is "using available media", as it should, no matter how you apply the transition. Like James said, you only get the "overlap" option if there is no available media to work with.
By the way, this has been this way for quite some time already (I think since 10.0.1, but I can't be sure).

  • Unable to apply transitions in the timeline

Have copied 4 video clips into the timeline and am unable to create any video transitions between them. I have tried to selecting the area between the two. I am able to this, but when I try to use the Effects/video transitions/cross dissolve I get the message:
"There was insufficient media for the requested transition at one or more edit points. Would you like to accept the others?"
Video transitions worked without a hitch in my earlier versions of FCP?

I'm not having the same problem, but it's definitely not a handle/media problem.  I can't even apply transitions to text clips... *or to a Through Edit* where I know there's continuous media.  I've tried Command-T, dragging the transition icon from the Browser, copying and pasting, and right-clicking on the edit point and selecting "Add Transition... ".
I've also tried repairing permissions, trashing my preferences, starting a new project and moving all of the elements into the new project, and starting a new Sequence.  NOTHING WORKS.
    Please advise, thanks.

  • Thin black line appears when applying transition to material

Im editing in PremProCC and have a problem with the video transitions especially the wipe effect. When I apply the wipe to a cropped jpg and play it back a thin black line seems to appear around the edges of the jpg. I thought it might have something to do with rendering but the render bar reminds yellow when I apply the effect. It also in the exported version too. Any help I've never seen this before?

Hope you can see the thin black line  its more noticeable when it's playing back. Its just after the Bes/sy letters on the left had screen.

  • Applying transitions to multiple slides

How do I set a transition to apply it to a number of slides without doing them one by one?
I've tried selecting one then scrolling down, holding down the shift key and selecting another - which highlights all the slides between. However, when I click on the 1st slide to select it, it undoes my group selection.
I've tried holding the cmd key down and selecting. This keeps the group selection but has no effect on the transition which only works on the first slide I select.

before selecting slides, make sure the Inspector Window with Transitions Pane is open and ready for you to select the transition you want for all slides. Highlight all the slides you want to have the same transition. Select the transition you want for all slides. This will apply it to all slides selected/highlighted.
    good luck.

  • Applying Transitions to multiple clips

I would love to apply a dissolve to many clips at once... can i? how?
also, i want to save the DIP TO COLOR DISSOLVE to WHITE but it's not saving it. it's always Black and then i have to adjust it manually.
is it possible to save the transition to white?
    thanks!!!

An alternative is to create a second Dip to color dissolve transition that always shows up with white as default colour, even if you lose your favourite folder content (i.e. trashing preferences).
I changed for you the default color to white in the " Dip to color (White) " plugin downloadable below:
After downloading it drag it to Macintosh HD / Library / Application Support /Final Cut Pro System Support / Plugins folder.
Restart FCP and you'll have it showing up in FCP dissolve transition folder with the name extention (White).

  • Apply Transition problem / pg. 138 FCE 4 Editing Workshop book

I have opened lesson 8 and followed well up through having two sub clips and applied -15 to the first and 15 frames to the second at the join point using the ripple tool. Step 6 on pg. 138 says in conclusion 'apply the transition.' I then drag the transition 'Cross Dissolve' from the Dissolve bin to the edit point between the two clips I have rippled. This is where it falls apart, or nothing happens but a clip of a lady squealing while serving food fades in and cuts abruptly off at the beginning of the second sub-clip. This lady seems out of context with the two scenery shots and worse yet, the timeline does not show the two halves of a pyramid leading into and out of the transition, only a clip of this lady shows up similar to a 'shuffle edit' but with a fade in transition from the end of the first sub-clip and an abrupt end where the second sub-clip starts.
I am thrown for a loop and don't know where to go from here.
Does anyone have a successful application of this transition from the book and DVD that could tell me where I may have gone wrong?
    TIA,
    Ken

    Tom Wolsky wrote:
The transitions should be applied from the Effects tab next to the Project tab, or from the Effects menu. It sounds as if you're dragged one of the transition samples that I provided on the DVD into the timeline.
I'll try it again, and yes, even though now, with a few trials going back through the process I was able to get the visible pyramid on the timeline and the two sub-clips now visually transition with dissolve from one to the other, there is still the audio 'woo hoo' sound of the lady serving food from what appears to be another unrelated clip. This must be from the transition sample I thought was the cross dissolve effect as it is labeled 'cross dissolve' and is in the effects tab from the Transitions folder I imported for chapter 8. Thank you Tom, I'll bet this works on the next try - I'll use the Effects menu this time.

  • I cannot apply transitions, I keep getting this:An Unknown Error Occurred

When I try to apply a transition, I get this message: +"An Unknown Error Occurred+
+You may be able to continue without any problems. You may also wish to save, quit, and re-launch iMovie HD."+ I did so. Several times. I even saved as a new project. I even shut down and booted from my install disk and ran Disk Utility, repaired permissions and repaired disk. No problems.
When I try to apply a Video FX, like Fast/Slow/Reverse, the clip shows the usual red line underneath but it never completes. It stays red.
Here's my best guess: The common denominator here is a video clip I imported...not from my camera. It was widescreen, or 16:9, or to be specific, 640x272. I wanted it to match the rest of my movie so I used QT Pro to change it to 640x480. Then I used someone's suggestion to drag that into the iMovie's Package Contents Media folder. It worked. That is, when I reopened my iMovie project, that clip played at 4:3 ratio. Beautiful. And that's the only thing I can think of that could be causing this problem.
Any help, please. I am wasting so much time fooling with this.

In addition to the above maintenance, you should also delete preferences by closing down iMovie and trashing the file named com.apple.iMovie.plist located in User (the house icon)/Library/Preferences. On relaunch, iMovie will creat a new .plist file to replace the one that you deleted. Often that simple procedure will solve problems like yours.
Additionally, check to make sure that you have sufficient disk space on your start up disk for iMovie to function efficiently. 20GB to 25GB is frequently recommended by users of this forum.
Make sure that your iLife programs are all up to date, particularly Quicktime.
Sometimes 3rd party or Quicktime plugins can conflict with iMovie and cause problems. If you have such plug-ins, temporarily disable them by moving them to a different folder.
You also could try opening your project in a different user and see if perhaps the conflict is specific to your user ID.

  • Can't apply transitions to After Effects comps in Premiere Pro

Hi people, newbie Premiere user here (my boss is trying to convert me from FCS) :-)  I downloaded the trial version of CS5 and want to learn as much as I can before my initial 30 days is up.  My initial experience has been pleasant, but I've come up against an obsticle I could sure use some help with.
    1)     Creating my timeline with serveral clips
    2)     Exporting certain clips to After Effects; 'Replace with After Effects composition'
    3)     Adding my effects
    4)     Back in Premiere Pro my clip is replaced by the comp.
    5)     Try to apply a simple cross-dissolve across 'Comp 01/Comp 02'
    PROBLEM!
Seems the transition will only snap to the start of the second comp.  With clips I can drag & drop the effect to span the clips and get perfect results, but not on an After Effects comp.
    6)     In Premiere Pro 'Effect controls' change parameter so that the transition centre is at 'cut'
The result indeed spans the clips, but the effect quality is terrible - decent fade from comp 01 to a sudden dip to black before fade-up on comp 02.
Yes, I understand the 'Layers' concept, but I'm not asking the software to do anything nonsensical, just a simple cross-fade across 2 comps.
I really would appreciate any advice anyone can offer, I'd really like to be converted (mainly because if I AM my boss has promised to buy me a licence when my 30 days are up!) :-)
    All the best
    Steve

To expand a bit on Colin's comments, back in the film days, the concept of Handles was easy to grasp, as the pieces of film were on an A and a B Roll, and the editor had to physically overlap them by the desired amount, so that the lab could print with a Dissolve. The same held for the days of A-B Roll digital editing, where the Clips were again physically overlapped on separate Tracks. Then, digital editors were developed that allowed one to edit with the Clips on a single Track, and where Transitions were applied between them. The Handles were necessary still, but were no longer visually obvious.
These images will tell you a bit more about the concept:
    Hope that this helps,

  • Can't apply transitions

I haven't used iMovie for a long time, and I don't think I've ever used version 6 (HD).
When I try to add a transition between two clips (each clip about 5 minutes in length) I get an error message saying that the clips are too short for a transition to be added, and that they must be at least 25 minutes long!
The same applies if I try to add a title by the way.
    Can anyone help?

    Hi
    Just thinking out.
You know that the clips are 5 minutes. Not represented as 0:00:05:00 = 5 sec
If they are 0:05:00:00 and the transition asks for 25 minutes then I would
first suspect iMovie pref file Error. And I would delete this so that iMovie
    makes a fresh new one.
My list of what to do when iMovie appears strangely:
    Many possible origins. Most common:
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
iMovie pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named: com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.

  • Pixelization on graphics when applying transitions!

I am working on a project for a client that is similar in appearance to a Power Point presentation, but hopefully with more bells and whistles.
They have given me images at 72 dpi with a white background. They want the white background throughout... When i apply a transition, such as cross zoom or push wipe, i notice a flickering pixelization around the edges of the image as it passes on or off the screen - kind of looks like the color is pixeled just at the edges and bleeding onto the white background with the movement. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and if there is a solution? Is it the dpi or is it the background?
    Thanks very much!
    Karen

Al - Glad i didn't hold my breath. These are definitely images they took with a camera, so I'm not sure what this could be!
Tom - Yes, i am rendering it first. Do I do the vertical motion blur within the transition settings or the clip settings? Also, i am not great with photoshop and am not sure what the white point is. How do I check? Also, why do you think it is also happening with text? Thank you very much for your help,
    Karen
Pure white exceeds spec for television display. It sounds like you're seeing bleeding that's leading to edge tearing in heavily compressed media. Try fixing in the images in Photoshop so the white point does not exceed 235. Also apply a one pixel vertical motion blur to the images.
