Apps are really slow to open on bound machines

Hi Guys,
i have a problem that's quite a head-scratcher. I'm assisting a departmental tech at the school I work for with a funny OD problem. There are three problems, and I am not sure if they are related:
1) Initially the problem was that new users that were created were unable to log in, yet users that were already in OD were able to log in fine. We found a workaround by switching the affected accounts' password types from OD to crypt, then back from crypt to OD.
2) Users can not access file shares in AFP if the auth type is set to kerberos, yet standard works fine. I tried rebuilding the kerberos DB, but the issue still persists.
3) Now the problem is that any machines that were bound to OD take a really long time logging in and opening apps. the login window will hang at the first letter of input before continuing with the rest after 30 seconds or so. After the user logs in, apps take 20 bounces or so before they open (e.g. System Prefs or Safari). the accounts are portable homes. the apps are local to the machine.
All the machines are 2008 imacs running 10.5.7 and the server is 10.5.7 on a Xserve Xeon.
Does anyone know where I can get started to resolve these issues? Thanks!

How many users do you have populated in OD?

  • Apps are really slow opening on my brand new iMac any ideas ?

Apps are really slow on my new iMac just got it out of the box and set it up and it seems to take an age to open them compared to my iPad, which is 1st generation. Any ideas ?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you also have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • CS4 apps are VERY slow to open Windows file browser with File Open or File Save As commands

We are running CS4 on Windows 7 with all available updates installed.   Photoshop and the other CS4 applications are VERY slow to open a Windows file browsing window to select files when File Open or File Save As menu options are run -- it can take as long as a minute or two for the window to open.  Once the window opens and a file is selected, then opening or saving the file is very quick.  The location of the default directory, whether it is on a local drive or a network drive, makes no difference.  Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

The link that I posted earlier is off.  Read this one
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2501584.  I discovered in my network that the MS Office File Validation Patch made excel crawl when opening over the network though nothing else changed. At the time I was opening Excel on Office 2003.
You can manually turn this off by editing the registry and tunring it off.  Going forward I skipped the patch to keep my sanity.  Not sure if this is the same as your issue, but the support article will go into detail how to either have Fix it
clear the issue or change the proper registry keys.
    Hope this helps

I hate how apple leaves iPod touch 4g and iPhone 4 in the dark and basically force us to upgrade to newer devices. Apple could of done better with the update and needs to resolve these issues.

    Try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

Having issues with my MacBook. Even when the internet is disconnected, apps are still closing and opening on their own. I sometimes do not have control over my cursor.....any suggestions?

There are several possible causes for this issue. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until it's resolved. Some may not be apply in your case.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable. A damaged or defective AC adapter could be the cause, even if it's the right kind.
    2. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and delete all pointing devices other than the trackpad, if applicable. Disconnect any USB pointing devices. By a "pointing device," I mean a peripheral that moves the cursor, such as a trackpad, mouse, trackball, or graphics tablet. A plain keyboard is not a pointing device.
    3. Start up in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you restart as usual, stop here and post your results. Do the same if you can't start in safe mode. If there was no difference in safe mode, go on to the next step.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller.
    5. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    6. A swollen battery in a portable computer can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    7. Press down all four corners of the trackpad at once and release. If there's any effect, it's likely to be temporary, and the unit needs to be serviced or replaced.
    8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

  • Pdf's are extremely slow to open and attach in outlook 2007

For the past two weeks, Pdf's are extremely slow to open and attach in outlook 2007.  currently have Adobe Acrobat X Standard and Adobe Reader X running on windows 7, using microsoft office 2007.  is anyone else having this issue?

In an effort to try and solve this I have converted the four reports to native POJO datasources. I thought that maybe the report was looking for the ODBC data source upon which the reports were designed. The ODBC approach was used to help speed up design and development. Now that the DB schema is up and running I can use the POJO and eclipse for preview.
No change in startup and exporting on the QA system.

  • Apps are very slow

I have an iphone 3gS which I have just updated to the latest ios.  I have also got icloud.  Since I've updated its been really slow.  When I open an app I get a blank screen for a little while and then the app starts.  Any ideas?

The 3GS, by default, is slow. It is usable, but slow. You will have to wait for apps to load. I've owned the 3GS, 4, and 4S. The 3GS and 4 are by far quite slow compared to the 4S.
But turn off iCloud. I did that, and it saved battery, and some performance got better. Use the free dropbox app. iCloud is a resource hog, and it works well with iPad 2 or iPhone 4S in my opinion.
    Hope this helps,
    Thanks,

Connect the iOS device to your computer and try to make a backup. Yo shld be able to make a backup if you previously syncing to this computer.
    iOS: How to back up
Then restore via iTunes. The iOS device will be erased. Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode if necessary to allow the restore.
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.

  • Apps are really small on my ipad

I just got an iPad and sync'd all my iTunes content from my computer, which was used on my iTouch. When I open the apps on my iPad, they don't open to full screen. I tried deleting and redownloading some more "popular" apps like Facebook, but I still have the same problem. How do I correct this, and how can I prevent this from occurring when I download more items in the future??

The apps you have are designed for the iPhone or iPod Touch screen. By touching this 2X on the screen you can enlarge the App but it will appear somewhat pixelated. To avoid this only download Apps which say they are made for the iPad. Sometimes these Apps are the HD versions. Facebook is not an iPad App.

  • Local refresh of upgraded Powerpivot report are really slow

    Hi everybody,
My customer has just upgraded from Office 2010 to Office 2013 Pro.
They also upgraded their powerpivot reports.
When they refresh these reports from their local computer the data refresh are far slower than in 2010.
When they create brand new reports from Office 2013 Pro, the refresh is faster.
Their 2010 reports are really complex and we want to avoid to rewrite them.
Have you heard about such problems?
    How can we fix this?
    Thanks for your help.
    Pete

    Hi Pete,
According to your description, you are experiencing the performance issue when refresh data in PowerPivot report after upgraded from Office 2010 to Office 2013 Pro, right?
We cannot reproduce this issue, and it's hard to say root reason that caused the performance issue. There are many facts that impact data refresh. Here are some articles about the troubleshooting tips and techniques for working through data refresh
    issues with PowerPivot.

  • HT201412 Ever since my iphone updated to iOS6 a few days ago the majority of my apps are extremely slow and the majority of my game apps do not respond at all. Tarey

Ever since my iPhone 4 automatically updated a few days ago with iOS6 the majority of my phone's apps are either very slow or will not work at all (game apps). Is anyone else having this problem? and is there a fix?

since morning today i have been running the iphone 4 with safari icloud sync turned off. i also left bookmarks sync from itunes off. i unplugged the charger at 100% charge at excatly 10 am. i am on 86% at the moment and its 5.30 pm. however i had to plug in the phone to my macbook for 3g internet access at about 91% which got it charged back to 100%. that was for about 30 minutes. so i guess i would had been at around 75% if i hadn't done that.
so i think people are right about the bookmark causing battery drain thing.
tomorrow i am gonna try with the phone rebooted and charger to 100%, with no location service running in the background, just when the app is running, and with all bookmarks deleted from my iphone. if i have to use 3g off my iphone i would use wifi personal hotspot. usually all this use... a few calls, some internet access, whatsapp, maybe a few pictures, and music for say about 2 hours should still leave me 40-50% battery by night, after 16 hours of use. if that goes well, i might have saved my self restoring the iphone to new.
as for the mac, i figured out a way to use timemachine for a smaller hdd. i will simply 'move' those files i dont want to keep on my ssd anyway, to an external hdd. like podcasts, videos and movies. then take a TM backup when the used space is under 120 gb. and then restore that to the SSD. should work, hopefully.

  • Why is iwork 09 apps SOOOOO MUCH slower to open then MS word on a PC???????

    Hi,
I would like to know if other people have noticed this, or it's just on my MBP, that it takes way longer to open a pages document than opening MS word on a 1 yr old computer running VISTA??? ***?
Word opens instantly and on my Mac it takes like 10-12 seconds!!!

    There are several factors.
It is not coded identically obviously so it is hard to determine exactly what is being done in the first few seconds of start up. Also to what degree Apple has optimised its performance by writing key functions in machine code.
Another big factor would be the Hard Drive speed in your computer. The small HDs in laptops are markedly slower than desktop models for example. Also how much real and virtual memory is available.
I'm not going to defend Pages just for the sake of it but there are lots of ways making software appear to respond more quickly by partially loading stuff and then making you wait later on. Microsoft for all you know may have preloaded key Microsoft Software on launching Vista on the PC, so it may already have been in memory. You could check in Vista by monitoring what is happening when you launch Word in a process monitor.
Do you have the same number of fonts on both machines?
Also Pages maybe checking other things such as media in iPhoto, iTunes etc.
I suspect it may also have to decompress the resources in its application bundle.
Whatever the reason you should let Apple know:
    +Menu > Pages > Provide Pages Feedback+

  • Re: My laptop is really slow in opening up websites

It took about 20 seconds for this forum page to open up.
I did the delete browsing history but that hasn't improved it.

    No, not in my case.
It has just taken 30 seconds for this reply page to open.
Everything on my laptop is opening up really slow.
I want to know what I should do to speed things up.
    EDIT
I just clicked the post message button and nothing happened for at least 15 seconds.
It took about 15 seconds for the edit to respond.
This isn't normal and I want to fix it.

  • Simple GLSL Shaders are really slow on MacBook Pro 13"

I have just get a new MacBook Pro 13 (i7 with Intel HD3000). I know that intel graphics card are not a beast but the performance I getting with simple glsl fragment shaders are really bad.
I have some video post processing shader in glsl in an application I have developed for mac. On my old MacBook Pro 15" (with nvidia 8600M) the performance was not perfect but I got 32-60 fps depending on the shaders.. with the new one I have 1-2 fps when shaders are on i.e. with a gaussian filter the perfomance drops to 8fps, with a little bit complex fragment shader performance drops to 1-2 fps.
My question is if is this a known problem due a driver implementation? or if is it the expected performance of the intel HD 3000 graphics card?
I really like MacOSX for work and develop but if this doesn't have a solution, I will have to return my mac and see other alternatives, It is impossible to develop any simple OpenGL application with this card .
    Thank you,
    Rafa.

I have just tested the same application on the mac with windows 7. The performance is a little bit better with shaders but bad in general.
    Performance on MacOSX:
    Video only: 60 fps
    Video+Shader: 2 fps
    Performance on Windows:
    Video only: 16 fps
    Video+Shader: 14 fps
So my guess is that on macosx there is a driver issue with the card.
    Thoughts?
    Thank you,
    Rafa.
