Apps Backing up Strategy

We are currently in the process of developing a new back up strategy for Oracle Application .
What I understand currently is
- RMAN can be used to back up the dbf files.
- The application tier does not need to be backed up unless there is a patching or customization. The probability of this seems less in production. However we may need to back up the concurrent manager logs/output files.
In application tier, the strategy seems to be copy the relevant directories to a tape or a disk drive maybe on a daily basis. This is a hot back up and hence there might be a data loss. Is this correct ?
But there are some directories which cannot be copied hot. Which are those ? Is there any solution apart from going offline the least amount of time?
So what is a good strategy for backing up the application tier ?

Hi,

In application tier, the strategy seems to be copy the relevant directories to a tape or a disk drive maybe on a daily basis. This is a hot back up and hence there might be a data loss. Is this correct ?There will be no data loss at the application side as all the data are stored in the database. If you have no customization or patching on daily basis, then you need to backup log files and concurrent requests log/output files.
But there are some directories which cannot be copied hot. Which are those ? Is there any solution apart from going offline the least amount of time? What is the OS? If you are on Linux/Unix, you should be able to copy the files, but on Windows this is not possible.
So what is a good strategy for backing up the application tier ?I believe having a weekly offline backup should be enough. For the daily changes, consider taking a backup of the log/output files mentioned above.

  • Start up disk is full, and need new storage and back up strategy

I am maxed out on nothing my iMac and Mac book pro and recognise I need to introduce a new external hard drive into the equation.
I currently have an apple time capsule with 2gb drive, that backs up the 600g iMac and 250g mac book.
I would like to understand if I could point applications such as iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie towards an external drive ( as long as it is always connected to either the machine...or perhaps network so all machines have access to the external drive)....and hopefully I would also be able to access my iTunes library ( on the external drive) via an Apple TV...without any fuss.
I would also like to use my apple time capsule to back up from both the iMac and Mac book internal drives...as well as recognising the data on the external drives that points to the respective computers.....eg the iTunes library etc.
    Is this at all possible???
If so, which external hard drive solutions should I use ( I have seen some mention synology...but looked at the website, and so many models and not sure what I would need)???
And how would I go about lifting and shifting data, redirecting applications to read and write to external drives, and getting time capsule to back up as above.....and possibly even have an additional back up strategy that allows me to take regular copies of all hard drives and keep content in an off site location for data security...possibly in a bootable format???
Welcome all help and advice please.

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Why does iTunes always sync old apps back to my phone when restoring from back-up?

I can't seem to stop this happening - I delete apps frequently from my phone as I find I have no use for them. I regularly sync my phone to iTunes and I expected this to mean that old apps would be deleted from there as well, the same as contacts and photos are modified. But whenever I've restored from a back-up, I end up with all my old apps back on. I'm currently restoring from a back-up and it's syncing 1560 apps back onto my phone! I only had 346 on there that I wanted! But obviously I do want it to sync apps back on because I really can't be bothered to download 346 apps again, but why can't it just sync the apps back on that were present on my most recent back-up? This seems to be one of the many dumb things that iTunes does...

Syncing apps is a transfer/copy process, not a true sync process as with contacts, and the same for all iTunes content.
All apps on your iPhone should be in your iTunes library. If you have Sync Apps selected under the Apps tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, after downloading an app direct with your iPhone the app will be copied to your iTunes library automatically along with being selected the first time you sync your iPhone with iTunes after doing so. If you delete an app direct on your iPhone, the app should be deselected automatically under the Apps tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes the first time you sync your iPhone with iTunes after doing so - so the app won't be reinstalled on your iPhone with a following sync with iTunes. Your selections under the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes is included with your iPhone's backup.
No iTunes content in your iTunes library will ever be erased via the iTunes sync process.

Hold the home and power button down until your phone restarts. If that doesn't work, backup and restore using iTunes.

  • Will LaCie D2 QUADRA with firewire restore my apps back onto my MacBook Pro if I upgrade to Lion and then restore from the external drive?

I ordered the disk to update to Snow Leopard.  Did that so I could get the App Store.  Did that so I could download Lion.   After I installed Lion my MacBook is super sluggish.  Takes like 6 seconds just to open a drop-down menu in Finder.
I have been backing up. Will LaCie D2 QUADRA with firewire restore my apps back onto my MacBook Pro if wipe my drive using the USB Lion OS stick (which I think I'll have to buy even though I downloaded the new OS online)?  I have been plugging my laptop into the Lacie drive set on "auto" and it's been working great.
One Genius said yes "you will get everything back" but my Mac buddy says "say goodbye to most of your apps".  Then a guy at the university I asked "do you have a disk image". And I said "what the **** is a disk image?".
Is the problem that I installed an OS on top of new OS without wiping the drive?  Or, is my MacBook Pro too old? Do I need to buy a new one?

    Any help?

SA will indeed transfer accounts, files and apps at first start. Can do so even faster if you clone the internal HDD onto the external (just split into a partition large enough to contain it) and then use it as the source. Probably faster than Time Machine too. The safest and quickest way to do a disk image or clone is using CarbonCopyCloner (free), and it will preserve the Lion Recovery Partition too.
Since you'll have to re--download the Lion installer again, note that you can concoct your very own Lion Installer USB Stick with it prior to reinstalling and not have to pay for the Apple-branded version. See Kappy's tutorial: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3786371?tstart=0
As for the sluggishness, I believe that a great part of the cause is that you only have 2GB RAM. Don't know if your Mac can take more but try at least to get to 4GB, if not 8GB. Should attempt this before  messing with the reinstall, as this may get you what you want.

  • How do I get my purchased apps back - after changing my Apple ID & Payment Method.

I can't seem to find any of the apps that I downloaded + purchased before updating my Apple ID & payment method.
I got an Ipad mini retina on Dec. 1st and signed on with my Apple ID and purchased a few apps to use.
The Ipad mini also asked me for my payment information again, but I entered in a different CC#, which updated my payment method to that CC#.
So, I just got an Ipad Air today and tried to restore that Ipad Air from the cloud, but my Apple ID is only showing app downloads and purchases from Dec. 15 and on.
    My question is ...
How do I get my apps back?  Who would I talk to?
I'm pretty sure I've only used one Apple ID, but all these new iOs devices and accounts are confusing the heck out of me.

Does this mean you Created a NEW Apple ID..?
It should be Noted that anything Downloaded with a Particular Apple ID is tied to that Apple ID and Cannot be Merged or Transferred to a Different Apple ID

  • How do i get my old apps back

i bought plenty of apps in an old ipod touch and i lost it now that i have a new one i want to get all my old payed for apps back without having to repay for them how do i do that

If you created a backup, you can restore from that.
Launch iTunes. From the menu bar, click iTunes / Preferences then select the Devices tab.
If there's a backup available, you'll see it there.
And, you can see your Apps under Library on the left side of the iTunes window.
And go to the App Store on your iPod. Find a previously downloaded app. You should be able to re download without repurchasing.

  • HT1977 I purchased a game on my ipod touch. I restored the device to factory settings last night and when I synced all the apps back, the game is now in the demo version. How do I unlock it ? I hope I don't need to pay for the full version again.

PES 2012 is no longer available in the US App Store and only on the British App Store currently.

That (an app no longer available) happens sometimes.
Your only way is if you have the appt on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case move it to your iTunes library and sync.

  • Hi!! I would like to know how to get my apps back. I got a new Iphone but my apps are in my pc and I do not know how to do it.

    Hi
Can somebody helme to get my apps back?....
I got another Iphone and my apps are in my PC, I already sincroniced but nothing happend..
Thank you from San José del Cabo México

Normally when you connect a new iPhone to your computer iTunes will recognize it as a new iPhone and ask you how would you like to set it up.  If you didn't get that screen then you may have used the iPhone prior.  If it didn't  then try deleting all data then connect the iPhone 4 to the computer and it should go to the iPhone setup screen where it will give you the opportunity to setup your iPhone as a new device (the name of your old iPhone should be in the name box).  If that don't happen then do this, keep your iPhone connected to the computer, launch iTunes then click on the iPhone icon in the left window then click on the app tab on the main window make sure all of the app have a check in the check box, also check all of your other tabs then re-sync.

  • HT201274 If i use the "Erase all Content and Data" button can I put an app back on the phone that is no longer in the app store but is store on the itunes in my computer?

I have an app, no longer in the app store, that i want to keep an iphone i'm getting rid of. I backed up the iphone on itunes and deleted all data, but the app, manually. I want to erase all data, and then put the app back on the phone. Please advise. Thanks

Then as I said you can do an Erase All Content and Settings which will wipe the phone. Completely. In order to add a game from your iTunes you will have to activate the iPhone with your Apple ID and then sync the game. You don't have to sync anything else. But you will need to sell the phone with your Apple ID on it.

I just updated my iTunes to the new software. When I plugged it into my computer and it said I need to reset my iPod. I did this and everything on my iPod deleted. Now, it won't let me sync my music or apps back onto my iPod. What do I do?

It doesn't say anything. It runs through the sync process like normal and tells me all of the songs that it's synking. But then when it says I can disconnect it, nothing actually synked.
