Apps Crashing & iPhone Backup Fail

So, all my apps were crashing on my iPhone except for the ones that were Apple's (Safari, Mail, Settings, etc etc etc). Fine - problem with the OS. I tried restarting my iPhone but the problem persisted. Some files must be corrupted. I've downloaded and deleted apps and haven't done a restore in 3 months. Backup, restore, and things will be okay, right? Not really.
I've done this before, so I wasn't expecting that none of the apps would sync or get backed up. After I restored, only the standard Apple applications appeared on my phone. However, they were arranged on the pages in my most recent organization (mail and app store on the second page, iTunes store stocks and microphone recorder on the third). Obviously when I backed up it took note of this.
And for some reason the apps did not sync with iTunes so now I need to rummage through my purchase history and re-download them(however, a recently purchased app is not listed there at all. never got a receipt in my inbox, either).
I'm a little ****** because I've lost some information that I would have liked to keep, such as the hundreds of words I've saved in the Wordbook App, favorites from iWiki, and log data from iFitness. This is information that I've been accumulating for almost a year. At least losing my saved games makes them replayable.
Now, I understand the information is gone and there is nothing to do about it, but I'm still not okay with this. Has anyone else experienced this problem?? If so, does anyone know what the cause could be? I didn't install/remove/sync anything. Was this caused by a virus? Any recommendations for the future?
TIA for looking at this. Hope I'm not the only one out there.

Well for some unexplained reason I've managed to back up at last.
I had tried every combination known to man (and woman) and nothing worked. I had even arranged an appointment at the Apple Genius bar.
I tried one last time and got the usual result. Phone synced but I got the usual final message of 'error occurred'.
So I tried to backup not by clicking the Back Up Now button on the iTunes page but by using this path:
itunes-file-devices-backup.
For some reason this worked! I couldn't believe it, so tried the usual way of clicking the Back Up Now button in iTunes and it worked again.
I really have no idea why this would be, but it worked for me, so it may work for you!

  • Two helpful tips- apps crashing & daunting backup times

*Apps crashing on the go after your sync?*
A quick fix for your apps crashing on your phone is to delete them (you can do this by getting into rearrange mode [the jiggling] and tapping "x", say yes to delete). After deleting go to the app store, re-download. It'll ask you if you want to install even though you already did so, of course you do! Fixed.
*Intimidating wait times for backup, just want to put some tunes on?*
*(assumes no auto-sync, and option selected in Music- sync only these playlists)*
Pay attention carefully: After you have added whatever you want to sync to your regular iPhone playlist. Create a separate playlist with just a song or use one of your "on the go playlists" if you don't really use them. Now check or uncheck the aforementioned and you will see "Apply" instead of "Sync" being an option. Click apply and it will only update your songs, no "Backup" required.
If this post is redundant or misplaced, please advise.

Try restoring to factory settings/new iPod and then redownloading (not sync from your iTunes library) only the one problem app.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • New apps crash iPhone 2.0 software on launch

I installed the 2.0 firmware on my Edge iPhone on Friday. I have noticed that every once in a while, the Phone will re-boot itself when I click on one of the new application icons. It immediately shows the while Apple logo and is re-booting.
It has happened with more than one application, so I don't know if the applications are coded wrong or the 2.0 firmware has bugs. After the phone re-boots, I can click the same application icon and it will work fine.
    Scott

I've had the phone hang and eventually reboot numerous times now. At least 3 of the times, the iPhone started up to the Apple logo and just sat there, forcing me to do a restore of my backup just so I can get back into the thing.
All three times I had just finished installing an app via the app store on the phone. The first two were WeatherBug, and the last was just now with ypmobile. One of the times I had just finished installing WeatherBug, gone into "Settings", had it beachball there for awhile, and then reboot and not come back.
All in all, when the phone is working for me, it works fantastic. When it's failing, it failing disastrously. I don't know how Apple managed to do such a successful, seamless hardware transition from PowerPC to Intel, yet can't manage to do something as simple as release a working upgrade to an existing product. I can understand the apps having problems, being initial releases, but there should be some sort of protection in the phone's OS to ensure it doesn't bring down the entire system with it.

  • Installing new apps crashing iPhone

    Model: iPhone first gen.
I'm not sure if I'm the only one with this problem but whilst surfing the net for answers I don't think I can be the only one as apparently there's supposed to be a 'fix' in the next Apple iPhone firmware update:
    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/08/19/stevejobs_vows_iphone_app_crash_fix_forseptember.html
What my problem is and it has happened so many times now I'm short on patience and very close to launching my iPhone at a wall! What my problem is, every time I get a new app from the app store it loads onto my iPhone OK but when I actually go to use it, the app bounces back to the front screen. After that I try again and still no joy. The only way I know or am aware of to correct this is to 'soft re-launch' or whatever the terminology is by holding the power/home buttons until the Apple icon appears. Now when I do this everything should be peachy however it's far from that, when the iPhone relaunches it doesn't open any apps at all, even ones it previously did and not only that it clears out my music and just states 'no music on here' type message - well before all that I had over 2,000 tunes on it!
So in order to get back to basics and get my iPhone working again I have to go to iTunes and do a factory restore which let me tell you takes a FREAKING AGE!!! This works, well until I want to install another app onto my iPhone. I think in the last two weeks I must of had to do a factory restore about seven-eight times
In case you're asking I have tried to do the 'reset' from the iPhone itself but that doesn't do anything in regards to getting the apps to start, hence that's why I have to do the 'soft re-launch'.
Has anyone got any ideas on this or any help? I've actually stopped moving the apps around on my screens because I'm just bored of the time it takes and know that I would have to do it again once my iPhone crashes.
Many thanks for your time good people

I and many others have experienced the same problem you are seeing. There are a number of threads here with user experiences and different ideas about how to avoid the bug occurring and how to fix it. I've been through several crashes and restores and am quite disappointed as well.
I think there is evidence that downloading apps directly onto your iPhone is very likely to cause this problem but that downloading into iTunes and then syncing to your phone may be better. There are a number of fixes for the problem that work sometimes and not others. 2/3 times I've had to do a restore to fix it.
The consensus seems to be that we'll have to wait for a bug fix from Apple (due sometime in September). Per the article you linked Steve Jobs has acknowledged in an email to a customer that this is a known bug that will be fixed.
    Good luck.

  • Contacts app crashing (iPhone 4, iOS 5)

After updating my iPhone 4 [GSM model] to iOS, Im having a repeating crashs with the Contacts app:
When trying to create a new contact, after pressing "done" the app suddenly crashes, and the only solution I found is to enter 1 detail to the contact info then editing it couple times to add the other info needed. I hope you'll fix this issue soon.
Sorry if my English is not so well,
    Idan A.

iMessage is built into iOS 5.  You don't need to download anything additional.
Use it to the same way you've always sent text messages.  It will automatically detect if the other person is on iOS %, and will seamlessly convert the conversation from SMS to iMessage.

  • IPhone backup failing

Every fourth or fifth time that I sync my iPhone 3GS to my mac it stops at the 75% mark and refuses to move. If I slide to cancel on the iPhone iTunes still shows up that it is syncing but won't cancel via the X. I need to force shutdown. If I try to sync the iPhone again it won't work, displaying a message that a session could not be started with this iPhone and it will keeping coming up this message every time. Now, if I delete the backup and restart itunes and the iPhone sometimes it will start to back up again for about four times before it stops at that 75% mark.
Any help would be great because it is annoying me greatly.

    I have some additional information:
I noticed that there was something wrong with my AddressBook. It is synchronised via MobileMe.
During the restoring processes for some reason one contact got duplicated about 52 times. When I removed these on my mac The content of these contacts (phone number) would disappear, but the name and image would stay.
I have now deleted these records manually, but no successful backup has happened so far.
    -- edit ---
I also tried to remove the contacts sync on the iPhone, and then re activating it. But that did not result in a successful backup.
    --- /edit ---
Maybe the contacts DB has gotten corrupted?
I do have some kind of "partial" backup created each time. Maybe the content of that backup could be useful to know what is causing BackupAgent to fail?
I could sare a directory listing if it's needed.
Also tried a hard reset of Contacts.

  • No permission to access the server app and Timemachine Backup failed

    Problem:
Mac Mini Server late 2009 running OSX Server 10.6xx for years without any problem,
upgrading to Mavericks Server in Dec. 2013, running perfectly for 6 month.
    No Hardware issues.
Last week i inadvertently deleted some (or most?) accounts (user and others), using the gui of the server app (and too much wine for myself).
After that i couldn’t login the app anymore, because it needs administrator rights (which were deleted).
This all caused problems by accessing some of the running services (e.g. Calendar, Adressbook, Wiki, Mail)
No matter - TimeMachine always did a fine backup job, i thought.
I restarted the machine using „command - r“, selected Recovery from TM-Backup and so on.
But after recovering and restarting the OS always hangs on reboot.
Ok - now i can do a clean install etc.
But has anyone any idea how to get back all the data of the services and the user accounts etc., using the corresponding parts of the Time Machine backup only? (Only local accounts, no network accounts/no open directory)

After reading one similar post, I've solve the problem.
It seems that I have to enable 'read and write' permission on
    my site root folder.

    next step depends
do you have a recent good backup already?
anything backed up to the cloud?
    which phone?
did you try update direct from phone or using Itunes? (newer Iphones will older will not)

  • IPhone backup fail

My phone is a 4S, software version 6.1.3. My phone syncs fine, but it won't make a new backup. I get this error now, every time I try.
    The error simply says:
iTunes could not back up the iPhone "iPhone" because an error occurred.
    Anybody?

Well for some unexplained reason I've managed to back up at last.

  • Restoring iPhone, backup fails...

Today I've decided to restore my iPhone to factory defaults. I would like to backup the entire phone, so when I've initiated the resture I also initiated the backup. Backup was successfull and the restore began.
Restoring went without difficulties, then when I've gotten the choice to restore the backup and click to start it, it started to complain about my harddrive not having enough backup space to finish the restore. I thought that was weird, because the backup should already be on my PC, right? But what the heck, it's not the first time iTunes makes me do weird jumps, I'll free up some disk space (I'll admit, there was only a few GB's left). Done that, I try to restore from my backup. But... it was nowhere to be found?!! There was a new backup that iTunes made of the clean install, but all the old backups are gone?!?!
I've searched my user directory (C:\Users\[USER]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync) folder in the hope that they're still there and iTunes is just being a big baby, but they weren't there.
Now I find myself sitting here with an iPhone clean install with no settings backed up and lost about 300 photo's/video's. I'm already fearing the worst, but I'm still gonna ask it here: is there any chance getting any data back???
Don't be afraid to get a bit nerdy, I am a bit nerdy...
    I thank you in advance...

Hi I read your message and I had the same problem!!I saw nobody answered until now.How did you solve it?please help!

  • Exiting an App Crashes iPhone

    Hello!
I recently downloaded cro-mag because it's on sale for 1.99, after playing about 10 mins I decide to quit the app, after pressing the home button, my screen turned black. I can tell the screen is on because there are lights around the corners but my screen remained black. I then double click on the home button and it took me to my favorite's call list (short cut). I press home again and this time it took me back to the home screen. Has this type of crash ever happen to you guys? Tired a google search but had no results...thanks!

After I set Settings - General - Accessibility - Assistive Touch = On, auto lock does not seem to work.  I have always had a one minute autolock.  When I turn Assitstive Touch Off, autolock works fine.

  • Camera app crashes iPhone 4s after upgrading to 8.0 then downgrading to 7.1.2

I have an iPhone 4s.  When ios 8 came out, I updgraded then realized over the next day that it slowed the phone down.  So I then reverted to 7.1.2.  After that, I have had a lot of trouble with the stock camera app.  It has locked up my phone many times and I have had to do a hard reset.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Apple was supporting the downgrade for a couple of days after ios 8 came out.  I downgraded with an Apple digitally signed version of 7.1.2 and I didn't hack anything.

  • Today my computer and apps started to crash, iPhone failed to sync, and iPad's SugarSync all broken, on the same day: why?

I'm having the computer day from **** (with term papers due! Woo hoo!) and am trying to figure out if these problems are connected, or by pure coincidence are all happening today.
This morning: the iMac simply crashed mid-operation: it's done this perhaps twice in the past three years, until today, when it happened twice.
Since then: Mail, Messages, Netnewswire, Preview - all frequently crashing, with crash reports that begin with something like ...
    Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0xffffffffffffff8b
And then continue on. I've posted in another thread about this issue here:
Dashboard and other apps on OS X Mountain Lion started crashing with KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS
Later in the afternoon, when I plugged in my iPhone (3GS, iOS6) to sync over some new podcasts from iTunes (because Apple's podcast app is dire, but that's a whole other story), the sync somehow erased all of my music. Several hours later, the music is apparently back on the iPhone, but there are no playlists - despite repeated syncings. Same issue as posted here ...
iOS 6.0.1 - disappearing music playlists
... although today is the first time that's happened to me in a couple of months.
And now SugarSync on my iPad (iPad 2, iOS6) is telling me it can no longer synchronize. Again, this is a problem I've had before, but that was four months ago and the problem hasn't been seen since. I've asked about that particular problem over in SugarSync's forums.
Basically the most annoying problems I've ever had with my iPhone and iPad have both re-emerged today, the same day that I've had the worst crashing problems I've ever had with the iMac (both the computer itself and its applications). Does anyone have any ideas about whether this is all just a massive coincidence, or is there something deeply wrong?
Thanks in advance for any good spells that will expel this demon from my computer.

Thanks mhadjar: oh, I know length of time should have nothing to do with it - it's just odd that all day I had constant crashes and problems, despite repeated diagnostics and repairs and reboots. Then the computer was totally fine the next day, after (but probably not because of) being turned off overnight.
Anyway, Preview has crashed again. Here's the crash report (I've X'd out the UUID - that's all I need to take care of for personal data, right?). Apologies if this is too long, but I don't know which part can be cut.

  • IPhone 6 apps crashing - mapkit bug?

Hey everyone, so I have an iPhone 6, 64GB.  I've been having app crashing issues with specific apps, and apple it not of much help at all.  I think I may have narrowed down the problem, but wondering if anyone else is having the same issue?  So far, upon search the only other major crashing issues I've seen are with 128GB iphone 6+, and that's not me.  Here's a rundown of what I've experienced:
    9/17/14
    - BRAND NEW iPhone 6, yay, restored from a backup of my iphone 5, and everything was working perfectly, no problems.
    9/26/14
    - That evening while traveling, random apps started crashing.
    - Facebook, Redfin, Maps, sometimes Calendar/Safari/Email, sometimes Fitbit, sometimes Myfitnesspal.
    - By crashing, I mean that they close abruptly with no warning. Sometimes they will actually load initially, but then after a few actions or minutes of use, they crash (facebook, email/safari/calendar).  Some apps just NEVER load (Maps, Redfin), they begin to launch and then immediately close.  They appear to close, but when you double-click the home button to see which apps are running, there they sit in all their glory, but you can't actually use them: bringing them back to the front of open apps just makes them appear to "crash" again.  I guess it's technically more of a display error, in that the app is technically running, but you can't see it and therefore use it.
*Side note - Coincidence this was the day the fatal/buggy iOS 8.0.1 update was released? Although I hadn't installed it yet...but weird nonetheless.
    9/27/14
    - Installed 8.0.1 over wi-fi (traveling and no computer), but didn't fix the crashing problem.
    10/27/14
    - Still been crashing all this time, life without maps and facebook is hard.
    - Attempted to install 8.1 and had horrific errors.  Had to wipe everything and set up as new phone, install the 8.1 update, and then restore from my last iphone 5 backup.
    - App crashing has ceased, and maps and all other apps are working normally. Not happy I've lost the past 45 days of history, but at least the phone is working again and I have *most* of my stuff.
    12/22/14
    - Haven't had a problem since the last fix in October.  Once again while traveling and literally on the plane out of town (I think maybe I'm cursed?), same crashing issues start.
    - It began with Facebook, then I immediately checked maps, calendar, safari etc etc and they're all broken again.  In case you didn't know, traveling in a city that you don't know without maps at your fingertips, and facebook to post your exciting updates, is not fun. Begrudgingly gritted my teeth and dealt with it until I could get home from travels and try to fix it.
    1/12/15
    - So I've been paying attention to this crashing thing the last few weeks and taking notes, trying to figure it out, because I actually want Apple to fix this, but I can't take it anymore.
    - Started out by turning on iCloud Photo Library beta to make sure all photos/vids are stored, then also did an iCloud backup and a full iTunes backup.  Also took screenshots of screen layout and other important settings.
    - Called Apple Support and they (of course) told me I need to update to 8.1.2 (dreading this!), and then wipe everything, setup as a new phone, and see if it's still having the problem; then restore from this mornings backup and see if that fixes it.
    - I first wiped the phone, just in case the glitch/bug is what caused my last update attempt to go awry.  Then setup as new phone, then updated software, then restored from this mornings backup.  Seems to be working again, and now the crashing is not happening.  BUT - we all know it will start happening again at some time in the future, when the stars align or some random thing triggers that glitch that starts this whole nightmare.
    WHAT I'VE GATHERED FROM THIS:
    1) Apple support techs are very quick to assume it's probably a corrupt backup file, and that the only way to permanently fix it is to setup as new phone and ditch the old data.  Well I'm sorry, but that's just not acceptable to me.  For one, every time I've restored from a backup, it appears to fix the issue.  That leads me to believe there is a bug that isn't initially a problem until something triggers it.  Two, I do not pay premium $ to have an iphone so that I can be told "sorry, you just have a dud backup file, if you want your phone to work properly you need to lose all your history"...I buy the iphone because of it's ease of use, and being able to seamlessly upgrade devices. At that price point, the phone better work flawlessly, and if there's a problem they need to actually fix the problem.  I didn't write the code, and I certainly didn't go into my backup and change the code. And three, I have way too much data to lose in apps, messages etc - losing that alone would be worse than dealing with this dumb glitch.
    2) After looking at the Diagnostic Crash Logs, all these app crashes have something to do with the Mapkit code, and sometimes also a Vectorkit code which I'm assuming is how the phone renders the map data and displays it. I'm not a developer or coder, I don't speak that language, but I can clearly see the event is EXC_CRASH and the thread each log points to has SOMETHING to do with MapKit and sometimes Vectorkit.  Being that all these apps do use apple's native maps app to display or lookup map data - it's clear to me that this seems to be the issue.  In researching further, I came across this post from a developer who mentions something about it: http://thecodist.com/article/our_ios_app_crash_rate :
"1/3 of the crashes are a particular one in MapKit where Apple's tile loading code in VectorKit appears to try to update a map which has already been      deallocated. I reported it in Radar but so far no idea if they are going to fix it. It appears that when a map tile load isn't delivered fast enough it can complete      after the app has already removed the map view."
I'd like for them to actually fix this!

Lol what is the point of a Support Community blog if all anyone is going to tell anyone is restart/wipe their device?  That's garbage.
@socialprincess1, I have THIS EXACT PROBLEM with my phone.  I travel (specifically air travel) and suddenly, like clock work as we push back from the gate, all apps that utilize mapkit crash.  I've reproduced this problem 4 times in the last month (I've done a lot of air travel).  Facebook, Apple Maps, Weather, Weather Underground, Lyft, etc.  ALL CRASH.
Apps that use the Google Maps engine, Google Maps, Uber, etc. all work fine....how ironic.
The only thing that stops the crashing is restoring the device.  Now, you can backup your device while its crashing and restore from that backup and your device will start working fine again...but this doesn't fix the underlying problem that this "mapkit bug" will arise again.
My only guess at this point in the debug process is it *may* have something to do with the on-board wifi (gogo-inflight, etc.), as it is the only thing that is unique to air travel. Maybe there's a cert that its trying to install or maybe even the Fly Delta app is doing something funky with location services/mapkit.  At this point I really have no idea.
I've also noticed that the location services icon (black compass mark) is on CONSTANTLY now.
I have a 128GB iPhone 6 that I restored from my iPhone 5 backup upon receiving as well.

  • By backing up the iTunes Library via saving the iTunes folder on an external drive, is it also backing up all iPad and iPhone backups as well as App Data and Documents from your devices?

If I backup my iTunes Library by saving the iTunes folder on an external hard drive using the instructions contained in the link below, will it also back up all my iPad and iPhone backups as well as App Data and Documents from my devices? In other words, will it also create backups for the backups? Thank you.
Back up your iTunes library by copying it to an external drive
Furthermore, when it is time to restore the iTunes folder I copied to my external drive to a new iTunes program on my new computer, how will it merge the information once I plug in my iPad or iPhone to that new laptop to sync? If I did the iTunes library backup a couple months ago and I've added documents/music/pictures on my devices since then, what will happen when I try to sync it with the new laptop now working off of the iTunes library backup from a couple months ago since the information is no longer the same? Which information will dominate and thus be kept? Will it delete the new information/data/pictures/documents/music off of the devices since it is not on the iTunes program when it syncs?
Sorry for so many questions, but they are all related to backing up and restoring iTunes. I am not very tech savvy if you cannot tell

It would be a good idea to look into a bigger hard drive. They are not that expensive any more and can save a lot of headach. This is even more important if you are buying music from the iTunes music store. If you lost those files they are gone.
The point of having it on your PC and iPod is to have a backup. If the iPod fails, or you need to go back to the DVDs and find they are scratched, or just can not be read you have lost days of work converting and organizing all of those songs.
Or the iPod could hard drive could fail and then you will have to try to bring all of those files back from DVDs. You end up with a mess since some songs will probably be on multiple DVDs, have different names ect. Trying to reorganize it all can be a pain.
