Apps icons won't stay arranged

Just got a intel Mac mini on which I did a clean install of Leopard that I updated with the combo update to 10.5.8, then I repaired the permissions.
My Applications folder is set to be viewed by icons, and then I choose "arrange by name", also setting a background pic for the folder and a size for the icons.
Everytime I reboot the Mac, the folder is a mess with the icons everywhere, no pic, small size, etc... I tried a lot of things from permission repairs, trashing Finder pref files, cleaning caches, trashing .ds store files... nothing works!
Any idea is welcome!

With your window open and arranged as you prefer press COMMAND-J. Check the box at the top to always display in icon view, set any other parameters, then click the set as default button at the bottom. This should fix things.

  • TS4264 Badge app icons won't stay off

I have five different email accounts set up on my iPhone. I have set the notifications so that only one of them (the one I use for personal emails) has badge apps. That way the email account I use for shopping websites and other non-important emails does not have badges. I get dozens of emails per day from the shopping websites but only a few from my personal email. The personal email is the only badge app I want so I can see on my home screen if I have an "important" email. So I have all the notifications for badge apps turned off for my nonessential emails. However I will turn on my phone and suddenly find a badge app on my "mail" icon that says "445" or something that tells me one or more of the badge apps for my nonessential emails have mysteriously turned themselves back on. I know I'm doing it correctly because it works correctly for a couple of days. Then something happens and all of a sudden I have to fix several of them. How could this be happening? Thank you.

    Also try settings> general> restrictions> allow changes> background app refresh> don't allow changes.

  • Icons won't stay in dock

Some icons won't stay in my dock when I drag them from the applications folder, but others will.
I have tried the following without success:
-gone to library/preferences and deleted com.apple.dock.plist then done a restart
-gone to library/preferences and deleted com.apple.dock.db then done a restart
-gone to library/preferences and deleted com.apple.DiskUtility.plist then done a restart
-used disc utility to repair permissions
-opened an application from the applications folder then whilst the icon is in the dock used right click.options/keep in dock
-deselected dock synchronisation from mobile me sync
None of these measures work though iPhoto & iTunes are not affected by the problem.
The only workaround I have found is to create an alias of an application and drag this to the dock where it does stay put.
    Can anyone suggest anything else?

  • Mail icon won't stay in dock

Recently my mail icon removed itself from the dock. It may be a sync issue because it started when I began using my second laptop and trying to use the iCloud/mobile me sync.
My mail wasn't on the dock in #2 when I started it. I went through and tried to make everything equal to machine 1 but some programs are not the same. The next time I started machine 1, all of the dock items were equal to 2 so I reset the dock items on 1. When I went back to 2 they had reverted again.
Now my mail icon won't stay put on 1. It was removed (mysteriously) from the dock. Now when I put it back, it disappears within a few seconds. If I open mail and then click on "keep in dock" and close mail, it disappears, too.
I have reset my sync data to replace mobile me with info from machine 1. No luck.

I seem to have resolved the issue by moving mail from the applications folder to the desktop. Then dragged mail from desktop to the dock. It seems to have stayed in the dock.
I moved mail from the desktop back to the applications folder and all seems fine now.
I am going to leave the "sync dock, sync widgets" options off.

  • IPhone Snyc Problems - Corrupted files, icons won't stay put

My iPhone/iTunes is acting very screwy. I'll try to be brief.
For a while now every time I synced I would get an error saying three particular .mp3 files could not be copied because they were corrupted (although they play fine in iTunes). I would delete and reinstall those files in iTunes and I would still get the error message every sync. At the same time my iPhone hard drive was gradually filling up with content classified as "Other" to the point where I barely had room for a few songs and a movie before the iPhone was full.
So I did a complete wipe-and-reinstall of my iPhone. I thought it would fix things but now whenever I sync the home screen icons are acting goofy. No matter where I put the "Voice Memos" icon, after every sync it re-appears on my home screen. And the Weather icon is completely missing from the home screens, including the extra "overflow" home screens that you can only see in iTunes (although the app still shows up under a Spotlight search so I know its there). Also, now when I sync my music I get three NEW files that iTunes claims are corrupted and can't be synced--although the files play fine in iTunes. (Not the same three files as it was claiming before).
I've wasted a day and a half already trying to get my iPhone and iTunes to play nice. I'm about ready to chuck the iPhone out the window. Any help our suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the tips. Rebooting doesn't work, have tried that.
Restoring the iPhone - ahhh what a lovely process apple have come up with here... Given I'm abroad, web access is transient at best via wifi. And I can't use the data connection with my chosen NZ provider as the phone won't stay unlocked!
Is there a way to restore the phone WITHOUT a web connection? Itunes insists it must download the software - which is a 250MB download on a platform which doesn't support resumable downloads (What is this, 1998!?)
I'm loath to do a hard restore (Turn Off, Hold Home Button down for 10 seconds, incase this breaks the phone even more).
I'll definately be having words with my local apple store when I get back - I've never ever had this much trouble doing something as simple as an unlock before.

  • Icons do not stay arranged.

No matter how I arrange my icons in the main/first window of my hard drive, when I restart, they always return to this jumbled mess. This only happens on this one window. I already discovered a corrupt plist for another issue and am wondering if there is something corrupt that is controlling this window. This problem existed in OS 10.2 and did not correct once I upgraded to Tiger (I did an archive install).

Open the Terminal application in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
    sudo chmod 666 /.DS_Store
Type in your administrator password when prompted; nothing will appear in the Terminal while it is being typed, and then quit the Terminal. Rearrange the icons again, and they should now stay arranged. This problem exists because the invisible file which stores this setting doesn't let most accounts save changes to it.

  • App icons won't update

After update to an app which has a new icon also (i.e. new version of Reeder) I have still an old icon on my iPhone and in iPhone Apps tab in iTunes. In iTunes Apps menu I can see a brand new App icon. Reboting iPhone didn't help. Any suggestions, please?

    Hi Matorresjr,
The Updates will stay listed in your update screen. This is so that if you have "Automatic Updates" turned on, you will be able to see what apps have updated and when. If it says "Open" it means it has successfully updated. You will notice that new updates are under a lable called "Available Updates" while updated (Open) apps are listed in groups by the date which they were updated.
Not sure how long they stay there, but they are intended to stay long enough for people to be able to see what has and has not been updated in their apps.
The sizing problem for wallpaper is a known issue that is undoubtedly being worked on by Apple.

  • Mail Icon won't stay in the position in the dock where I put it

I have a very strange happening on my iMac (OSX 10.5.5). The mail icon in my dock won't stay in the position where I put it. After a few seconds, it moves to the last position in the dock (before the dashed line). If my dock is at the bottom of screen, the mail icon moves to right just before the dashed line. If my dock is on the right side of screen, the mail icon moves to the bottom just before the dashed line. Each time I move the mail icon to another position in the dock, it moves back to the last position. Can anyone help me figure this out - so that I can put the mail icon where I want it to appear? Thank you. Dale

first a question for you. are you using Mobileme? I've seen a number of posts with the same problem by people using Mobileme (which i don't have). haven't seen a resolution to this but you might want to check in the mobileme forum. If you are not using mobileme try resetting Dock preferences. delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and restart Dock by running the following terminal command
    killall Dock
This will reset your Dock to the default and hopefully fix the issue.

  • Mail icon won't stay on dock

When I closed out my mail program today, the icon disappeared from the dock. If I hover over the spot where the icon is suppose to be, it says Mail. I can click that empty spot and my mail program opens by why won't the icon stay?
I tried going into my applications from Finder and dragged the icon to the dock, but all that did was open the mail program. When the program opens up, an icon will appear.
I tried rebooting but that didn't help.

Sounds like the problem in this thread:

  • Icons won't stay on left of desktop

    Hi,
I have a few icons that I like to keep on my desktop. I like to keep a few down the right-hand side of the desktop, and two or three on the left-hand side. Trouble is, with current settings, I can't get the icons on the left to actually stay at the very left-hand edge of the desktop. Those on the right are lined up right at the edge of the desktop, but those on the left are a good inch or more away from the L/H edge. If I move them nearer to the edge, they snap back into place.
I have the desktop set to arrange by snap to grid. If I change this to arrange by none, the problem goes away and I can put icons as far on the left as I want. But I'd rather have snap to grid on to kep things lined up neatly.
So to my questions: why does OS X keep icons away from the L/H edge of the desktop when set to arrange by snap to grid? And is there any way around it while keeping snap to grid on?
(If it matters, my screen resolution is 1680 x 1050.)
    Thanks in advance,
    Rob

    iBod,
OK, that seems to have done the trick. I had to play around with the grid spacing – there seems to be a setting somewhere just right of the middle of the scale that enables icons to be positioned almost at the L/H edge of the desktop.
Thanks for your help. One of those ultimately unimportant but nonetheless annoying little issues.

  • Unable to kill apps, icons won't wiggle

Trying to kill apps; but, icons on bottom platform will not wiggle. Now, when I hold down "platform" buttons, x's in a black box will appear on random apps above platform - not all the apps, just a few here and there. Very weird. I have tried shutting down/re-booting several times; I have checked to make sure that none of my apps are paused anywher - short of that, is there anything else that I can do?
    Thanks!

btw, closing or "killing" those apps doesn't do anything, esp. wrt battery since you're not killing anything in the first place - they are not running apps.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4211
the list is only a list of recently used apps.
what apps can run in the background is by design - only native apple apps and a few 3rd party apps for music, gps etc. all others hibernate and do not run in the background.

  • Desktop Won't Stay Arranged (after upgrade to Tiger)

I just upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.10, and all is perfect except for the desktop arrangement. The old 10.3 desktop was 4 columns of 36x36 icons arranged as "keep arranged by type". The new 10.4 desktop (also "keep arranged by type") is 3 columns of icons, with multiple icons stacked on the upper right corner icon. The icon stack happens because there are too few columns to hold all the icons.
The only way to get 4 columns again is to select "snap to grid" and drag & drop from the stack of icons to make another column. Nothing is arranged by type. If I select "keep arranged by type" then it reverts back to 3 columns with stacked icons in the upper right corner. This is totally different behavior than what I had with 10.3, and I can't seem to get back to 4 columns of icons arranged by type.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I am not sure how you went about the installation, but something obviously did not go right. Here's what I suggest:
    1. Repair Disk Permissions
While booted from your internal HDD
Go to (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left column and First Aid in main column.
Click Repair Disk Permissions at bottom left.
    2. Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
    3. If neither of the above make a difference download and install Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo update (PPC). Then Repair Disk Permissions as in 1. above.
Please do post back with an update or further questions or comments.
    Cheers

  • App icons won't move to a different page

After the icons are wiggling I try to move them to another page but the icon just slides back to where it was? I have no problem doing this on my iPhone, only y iPad? Any ideas?

I’m having a similar problem. I can drag icons to the right, moving them to pages 2, 3+, but I can’t any to a page to the left.
I just downloaded an app and wanted to move a couple of icons to page 2 to make room for the new icon . Now I can’t move any of them to page 1 and have some icons on page 3 now too!
Is this a new problem with the latest software. I think I was able to move icons up or down pages before.
