Apps keep turning cellular data on

I keep turning off data for most of my apps so that I can only use them on wifi but lately some pass keep turning their cellular data on. I try to turn it off again but they always manage to turn it back on after I leave my settings

I've seen similar things going on even though I explicitly turned off Cellular data.  I also added restrictions to disallow changes to "Cellular Data" settings, still managed to enable itself.  And just to clarify, I know for a fact that the Cellular Data setting was not explicitly re-enabled.
But, notice the per-app settings below the Cellular Data ON/OFF under General Settings / Cellular Data.  My guess is that each application ALSO needs to be set to OFF to disallow Cellular Data use -- in fact that may be the very thing that's causing the setting to be magically re-enabled.
IMO it's a pretty poor design to even allow application to change the ON/OFF switch of Cellular Data, period.  If the global setting is set to OFF it should stay off unless the user explicitly re-enables that feature.  The fact that the user needs to set not only the global feature to OFF but also enable protections in other places per-application is a huge concern.
Just consider all of the unauthorized charges that are being racked up by the cellular vendors against users that are unknowingly "authorized" by the use of, in most cases, a fully approved downloaded application.  Hmmm...
Terms and Conditions per application will need to be heavily scrutinized but even if mentioned in the T&C's somewhere on page 74, line 62 -- that doesn't guarantee indemnity.  It sure sounds like a class-action lawsuit is on the horizon.

  • Individual cell data buttons for each app keep turning on by themselves?

I have a 4S iPhone, OS 7.0.6, and my problem is that the individual cell data buttons for each app keep turning on by themselves. I'll go in and turn them all off and the next time I look (whether in 5 min or 5 hrs) they are all turned back on again? I want to leave my cell data on so that I receive my iMessages but usually don't want everything else turned on until I get to a wifi zone. I used to be able to keep them all off until  I did  the last couple iOS updates. Help!

    Hey there Tylyssanna,
It sounds like your cellular data options are not saving correctly. I recommend starting by turning off Cellular Data in Settings first. Then close all the running apps:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that and restart the phone, turn it back on, and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

  • Unable to turn cellular data on for apps

    I'm running a 32GB iPhone 5C on 7.1.2 on Verizon.
before the last update I had gone over on my data allotment and then went into the cellular data settings and turned off the cellular data for almost every app I could. Some of these included the music app, podcast app, angry birds, google drive and documents, and just any app that I don't need sucking off my cellular data allotment.
well the 7.1.2 software update changed the settings (I don't know why Apple changes these things when there's no reason to, it's getting frustrating having to learn how to use my phone after each update) and you can no longer go into cellular data and flip the switch for all the apps on one single page. So now I have apps like the Podcasts and Google Apps that I open, am alerted the cellular data is turned off for them but when I click settings (the other option is just a confirmation of the message receipt) it takes me to a section in the settings that is no longer listing all my apps with the cellular data switch.
so my problem is that I've turned off cellular data, updated
software that for no reason neutered my ability to turn it on/off for individual apps, with no way to turn the cellular data back on for those apps. I can't imagine why Apple would do this, unless app developers were complaining to Apple that people were
turning cellular data off to avoid advertisements.
I have reset network settings, scoured the settings menu for options, tried most things suggested for other problems and still nothing. And I'm not going to reset my phone because as soon as I load my backup I'll be in the same boat. Oh I've also tried uninstalling and redownloading the apps as well.
and on a side note whoever put the . Button next to the space bar during certain keypad operations is an a hole because most of the searches I do look like this:
    "What is the distance.to.the.moon"

so now I've done everything from resetting settings, resetting network settings, turning wifi off, turning phone in and off, messing with cellular data and background app refresh as well as notifications.
trying to use an app that has no cellular data while wifi is
off does not force the app to show up under Settings > Cellular Data.
it appears as though a lot of people are having this problem and sometimes the above mentioned things work and sometimes they don't. It looks like having Cellular Data turned off for
    certain apps during an iO
God **** it now I have to write things in the Notes app and copy/paste them here because it's randomly not inputting my text and when I start typing it says "GGo" instead of Go, double typing the first letter. Why the **** doesn't Apple have a mobile app/setup of this?
Anyway it looks like if you have Cellular Data turned off for an app and do an iOS update it causes this bug. Sometimes the things above work, sometimes not. This is insanely frustrating.

  • I updated to 7.0.5.  I can't turn off apps from using cellular data. How to turn it off? Many thanks in advance!

I updated to 7.0.5 just now, now I can't turn off apps from using cellular data, I turn them off but  as soon as I back out they automatically turn back on.  How to turn it off? Many thanks in advance!

Yes i did that, but when i went back to my home screen all the applications that i've choose to not using data just automatically activate themselves.... ><

  • How do i figure it out what app use the cellular data in standby mode?

How do i figure it out what app use the cellular data in standby mode? I disabled the cellular data for 3 days, and my battery last longer. I don't use push notifications, neither location services. I'm not signed in in skype or any IM app.

Do you use push email?  Do you have accounts that have synchronized calendars associated with them?  Those features will still use cellular data in the background as the receive mail and send or receive calendar updates.
Some notifications, like push notifications from Facebook and other social networking sites may use cellular data in the background.  Basically, any automated data task like those may use cellular data when the phone is in standby (note that wifi would be used if available when the phone is active, but wifi turns off in standby and all data goes through the cellular data connection).

  • Why can't I disable certain apps from using cellular data?

    (iPhone 4 on iOS 7.0.4)
I can't seem to turn off the ability for certain apps to use my cellular in the "Cellular" menu.  I would usually to go Settings>Cellular and begin turning on/off app from using cellular.  But now, I can't turn them off.  I would switch them off and turn off cellular, then I would turn the "cellular" option on and the same apps would have their switches on instead of off.  They would switch on automatically without my consent.
Before you say that maybe I have "allow changes" or "don't allow changes" on the cellular data use.  Even if I had one or the other, the manual changes gets ignored.
I have to have the "cellular restriction use" to allow changes to try to turn off the individual apps that have cellular data on. But the second I leave the sub menu or turn off and then on the cellular data, those same individual apps switch on by them selves.
What am I missing?  What is the new changes that isn't allowing me to decided which apps can use cellular data and which can't?
My only guess is that it's a problem based on 7.0.4.  I never had this problem before.  Sometimes though, I would have "Don't Allow Changes" locked on cellular usage, but some how manage to have the ability to turn them on and off where I shoulded.  They should be "greyed" out.

Yes. But you may still be able to download compatible versions.  You will have to download the App to iTunes on a computer or another device that does support the App using the same Apple Id you have on your iPad.  With that done you can follow these instructions from your iPad to get a compatible version:
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app

  • Is there a quick way to turn Cellular Data on and off?

I just sent this suggestion in to Apple:
I have limited data on my Iphone 4s, well 2gb and I try to use my wifi as much as possible while home especially.  I don't know the technical term for it, but when you swipe up from the bottom of the phone and : wifi, airplane mode, bluetooth, do not disturb comes up to quickly turn those functions on and off wouldn't it make more sense to replace airplane mode with cellular data?  That way we can quickly access and turn cellular data on and off instead of going through the settings, cellular data on/off.  Just thought this would make our lives easier and hope you will consider it on your next update.
Does anyone know if I have the cellular data turned on, but the WIFI is being used first, if that still uses up my Cellular data?  I think I know enough that if the "verizon" is in the upper left corner that the wifi is being used through my router but then if my 3G is displayed than I'm going through my cellular data.  Sorry, I'm new to the Iphone scene so I'm still learning.
    Ok, thanks in advance.

Actually, all the display of Verizon on the phone shows is that you are connected to their network, it does not show that you are on wi-fi, or cellular data. If the wi-fi fan is displayed, then you are on wi-fi. If the phone is displaying 3G then you are using cellular data. If you are connected to wi-fi, the phone defaults to wi-fi and will use that instead of cellular data. However, if the phone is not actively utilizing data and the phone goes into sleep mode, then wi-fi is disconnected. It will connect immediately after being awoken.
    Does this answer your questions?

  • When ever i turn cellular data off then back on my mobile internet doesent work why does this happen?, when ever i turn cellular data off then back on my mobile internet doesent work why does this happen?

when ever i turn cellular data off then back on my mobile internet doesent work why does this happen?, when ever i turn cellular data off then back on my mobile internet doesent work why does this happen?

You only asked the question 4 times.  You have to repeat it at least 10 times to get an answer here, and then only if you supply useful info about your phone.

  • If I turn Cellular Data OFF on Iphone4S (and Enable3G too) should it still be connecting to my home Wi-Fi?

I know there's heaps on this topic overall, but just want straight answer please - so if I turn Cellular Data OFF and Enable 3G OFF on Iphone4S, should I still be receiving emails via my Home Wi-fi...curious that's all doesnt make sense to me!

Thanks for your reply...I am worried about connection issues overall I guess, and that one popped into my head as a result...I was recently charged $75 from phone provider when my son went on YouTube for a mere 20 minutes (after useage data had been already used) (this may not relate in any way, however being a new user I am just a bit freaked out about what can/cannot happen on this darn phone lol!

  • "use cellular data for" apps keep turning back on

ie. go in, slide bar from green to off for facetime, youtube, etc...go out of Cellular, back in, and those apps show green for "use cellular data for".
At first I thought it was an issue with some versions of Angry Birds, as they don't all do this.  Then realized facetime, youtube, facebook, etc.. all do this.
Works fine on two other iphones.   Running latest ios on 4S
The fact it doesn't do it for all apps is what I find is strange.  Thought at first it was an issue with Rovio apps, but then realized even facetime does this.
    Thanks

I'd like to know why there is not solution to this.  I think I'll just remove all those apps that are turning their 'use cellular' data back on.  I only cared because when my kid plays angry birds, my cellular data was being used for videos.  Oh well, I guess I'll have to remove apps or get a new data plan.

  • Do you have to turn cellular data on to receive photo attachments by text?

Do you have to turn on cellular data on iPhone 5 in order to receive photo attachments sent by text?

I never turn off cellular on the phone - the phone function is still the primary use for me and there are some data sevices I prefer to keep on at al times. You can restrict some functions from using cellular however: Settings App > General > Cellular > and set as needed in the Use Cellular Data for section. Aslo Check location services and turn off those apps you really don't need location services for.
But ultimately I agree with pdrith. Monotor your cellular data (your provider may even have an app to do that - Verizon in the US does), and based on your plan make a decision about how much you need to worry about it.

  • How to stop apps from using cellular data?

When I'm out traveling I sometimes enjoy gaming on my iPhone 3G.
Recently I noticed that one of the games (And other apps which "shouldnt" be doing cellular data) I've been playing is downloading cellular data (For in-game commercials!) even though I never gave it permission to do that. I also sometimes see the data network icon animating some times without having any apps running..
The thing is, I live in Norway and cellular data traffic is very expensive here. I want to have full control and give/deny access to cellular data in the moment, alternatively turn it completely off.
Is there any way to turn off the celluar data traffic (And hopefully an easy way)?

Turn on Airplane Mode and turn off WiFi in Settings.

  • If you allow an app to use cellular data will it ever use WiFi?

In the USE CELLULAR DATA FOR settings, you can authorize cell data for individual apps and services.  What I would hope is that when you are at home and operating on a WiFi network with cellular services turned off, that that would override these settings.  Does it actually work that way?

That setting is system-wide, not tied to a specific app. iOS priorizes Wi-Fi over Cellular if available, so you don't normally have to turn off Cellular data.
Unless you're at work, the Net Admins have draconian restrictions on LAN traffic and can't wait to get home and download the ****, in which case going Cellular gives you a workaround, so you turn off Wi-Fi instead...
