Apps not recognized by iTunes

Hello -
I would appreciate any suggestions regarding an apparent issue with my iPod touch 2G. This is in conjunction with iTunes 8.0.1 on a G5 tower, dual core 2.0.
The iPod will download and run apps from the Apps Store without difficulty, and iTunes will download apps, as well. However, iTunes is unable to install apps to the touch -- this generates an error message indicating that the attempted install failed due to "an unknown error (-4)." Likewise, apps on the touch are not backed up to iTunes; there is no "applications" folder associated with the touch as a device under iTunes. I've tried deleting the apps from the touch (after acknowledging a warning message that the apps have not been backed up), deleting them from iTunes and re-downloading, deleting the touch backup in iTunes and forcing a new backup, etc. In essence, it appears that iTunes is unaware that there are apps on the touch, and it's likewise unable to install apps to the device. Apps are set to "sync" in iTunes. I've done everything but restore the touch, which I'm reluctant to do because at this point I'm unsure whether I have an accurate backup, or not (given this behavior).
Any suggestions appreciated --
Edward

Try some basic troubleshooting before you restore your iPad.
First close all apps. In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Next, reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If that didn't help, try this. Reset all settings. You will not lose any data, but most of the device settings will have to be entered in the settings app again. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all Settings.
IF you really feel that you need to restore, and maybe you will have to, try this for help with the device not being seen by iTunes.

My ipad is not recognized in iTunes, when plugged into my computer. I can't back up or sync to my computer, but I have managed to back up to icloud, I think. Applications shut off within 20 seconds of opening them on my ipad. I think I need to reset my ipad but I'm just not getting that option when I plug it in to my computer and I'm worried about whether or not the icloud backup is sufficient. Thanks!

  • IPad 2 not recognized on iTunes

This evening I had problems starting apps as the memory was full.  I plugged the iPad into the PC and started iTunes.  All looked good and 'normal' so I started to delete some of the kids game apps.
A message then came up to update the iPad iOS software.  When I selected that it said the iTunes software needed updating so I selected that too.  After about ten minutes of file downloads it then showed error 3004.  I followed all instructions given by Apple.  One helpful Apple message sends to the iPad but the iPad is now stuck on the black screen with the blue iTunes connect logo.
iTunes doesn't see the device, even when asking for a reboot.  I tried a system reset to yesterday but that failed too.
Any one know a way of getting the iPad to get off the blue iTunes connect screen without smashing the thing?

    Hi there Matthew,
It sounds like your iPad is in recovery mode and it isn’t recognized by iTunes, also this all started after attempting to update iTunes on your PC and iOS on the iPad. Take a look at the article linked below and try the troubleshooting suggestions that it provides before attempting to restore the iPad.

My ipod touch 4th generation is not recognized by itunes or my computer.
It has a list of instructions as to how to fix it and I followed them until it said to load the driver for the device from a disk.
I have no such disk nor do I know of one.
My computer said the driver is present but there is a problem installing it.
Does anyone know of what disk they are talking about?

It's connected, but the iPod icon is nowhere to be found. I restarted my laptop, but the same problem occurs. Can I get some help with this issue. Thank you.

  • IPod Touch not recognized by iTunes after a Reset?

My iPod Touch is not recognized by iTunes.  This has nothing to do with the new OS update.  2 months ago I was having lots of problems and decided to use the reset since it was not showing up on iTunes to do the Restore.  Since then I was able to get all of my apps back but cannot get anything off the computer like my songs.  When I plug it in anywhere the battery life screen does not come one (dark) and the little sound it makes (silent) is absent as well.  Any ideas anyone?

Your USB 2.0 cable might be broken. You might need to buy another. Heres some links:

The one from amazon is around $12 cheaper. But if you want the new Apple Cable, here it is.

I bought an iphone and synced it. When unplugging it, I realized all my apps I downloaded were gone off the iphone (I did find them in the itunes folder however) but the issue is, my Safari and my itunes program will NOT open. They bounce once and that is it, never opens. No errors, nothing. I have been going insane trying to figure out what the problem is. Anyone else have this issue?

All I'm doing is trying to update the songs on it. I know apps and such will no longer update, but it's ridiculous that I can't plug it in and put some songs on. The iPod Touch version is 4.2.1 and my current itunes is 11.5.1. I'm currently using Mountain Lion so 10.8.5 for the computer version.
If I need to get an earlier version of iTunes, can someone tell me how to get it on there? Do I have to get rid of the current itunes version or what?

The current version of iTunes is bacward compatible with all iPods.

  • IPhone not recognized by iTunes any more

    iTunes 9.0.2 on a 2006 iMac 2GHz intel duo running OSX 10.5.8
    iPhone 3Gs 32 gig
    iPod (5th gen)
3 external hard drives, all the iTunes library stored on a Mybook 1 TB Firewire drive plugged into iMac direct, not via a Firewire hub.
I plugged my iPhone into the Mac this am, tried to sync the iPhone and got an error message saying that something was wrong with my iTunes.
    Mac then froze.
Finally got the Mac back up after five attempts (eventually, had to unplug everything, including the mains to the iMac, plug in just the power, keyboard and mouse, press and hold power switch for 5 secs then plug in each extra drive when the Mac came back up).
Found something seriously wrong with iTunes as it wouldn't open when clicked on (Force Quit reported app frozen).
Deleted iTunes using AppZap then downloaded iTunes from Apple website.
iTunes now back up on iMac but can't find any of the music files (even when I carefully repoint the iTunes to the correct location for the iTunes library by iTunes/Preferences/Advanced then Change iTunes Media Folder Location). Each entry in the iTunes library now has a black exclamation mark against it,
Also, iTunes doesn't see my iPhone when I plug it in.
Also, when I plug in my iPod, get the error message "The iPod is synced with anotehr iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPod and sync with this iTunes library?"
    HELP!
By the way, I have TIME MACHINE running to a separate and dedicated HD. Can I not just "roll back" my iMac in the same way I could do with a PC, say selecting the iMac when it was last working fine (yesterday evening)??
Keeping fingers crossed and hoping for an answer....
    Chris

Rather than create another "iPhone not recognized by iTunes" thread, I'll add to this one. I have an iPhone 3G 8GB.
After going through those steps you listed, my Windows XP installation always reverts back to the old Windows Apple iPhone drivers which only sees it as a camera. I've had it set to only pull from the iTunes drivers by specifying "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install" in the Hardware Update Wizard. Windows still doesn't like the iTunes drivers stating "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware". This location is the same as you noted: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers" which contains:
    usbaapl.cat
    usbaapl.inf
    usbaapl.sys
    All dated 7/22/2008.
My current drivers for the iPhone in my setup are still the MS drivers, version 5.1.2600.0.
    usbscan.sys
    ptpusb.dll
    ptpusd.dll
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

  • TS1538 iPod Touch with blank screen that doesn't shut off and not recognized by iTunes?

I opened the app "MyTown 2", and it stayed on the opening screen for about 5 minutes - WAYYY too long! So I tried to close the app. A slight grayscale sort of film "slid" down over the opening screen, and then it went to this light gray, completely blank screen. It's been that way for over an hour - no matter what I do, can't do a hard shut down, and the device is not recognized by iTunes at all. It's completely DEAD!!!! Is there any hope? Anyone have a clue?

Following the instructions in this procedure to the letter. Here they are, with emphasis on some easily overlooked requirements:
Disconnect the USB cable from the iPod Touch, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release only the Sleep/Wake button.
Continue pressing and holding the Home button while you reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.Note: If you see the "low battery" screen, let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then start with step 2 again.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears (iTunes icon and USB connector) release the Home button.
If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the "recovery mode" alert ("iTunes has detected a phone in recovery mode").
Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you do not see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
Select the device in iTunes and choose "restore from backup".
If you still can't get it to work, you have done all you can and only Apple will be able to help.

I believe I accidentally selected a Photoshop Elements app instead of just closing the dialogue like I normally do.  Now, everytime I connect the iPad via USB, the Photoshop app fails to open not recognizing the iPad, and iTunes does not recognize the device.
Anyone have an idea of how I can "undo" this crazy situation?  So far I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes completely, I think.  When I reinstall, my previous settings are still reinstalled so something remains of the previous install.  Also, I have done a "reset" of basic settings on the iPad.
Very frustrating.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Maybe I will sell this thing and get an Android device.  I seem to have better luck with them.
