Apps on start up.

hi all, when i start my mac up ichat, firefox and skype all start up but none of these are checked in my accounts tab as start up items. anyone know why this happens?

If those applications are in your Login Items they will launch automatically on start up regardless of whether they are checked or not. If they are checked they will launch but will be hidden. If they are not checked they will launch and be visible.
If you have apps in your Login Items that you do not want, then simply remove them by selecting them and then clicking on the '-' button at the bottom.

Most apps have started crashing on startup

As of today, most of my non-Apple standard apps have started crashing/quitting immediately on startup.
All the regular Apple apps work ok - Mail, Camera, Photo.
And some new apps I redownloaded that were crashing, like Google, now work again.
But most of my apps don't work. As soon as I start them up they immediately quit.
I tried a reset, but that didn't help.
Anybody ever see this before?

Never mind. It turns out I didn't do a true reset (hold the home and power buttons down until it automatically turns off and restarts). I was doing just a power down.
After a true restart everything started working again.

The past few days my Mail app has started downloading multiple copies of e-mails from all pop servers. This is only happening on my Macbook not other macs. Deleting mail from server does not help. I ran ClamXav found 2 viruses deleted problem continues

Folks,
even after having repaired the inbox folder under "properties" a few times, I still had some e-mails where the contents are different from the subject line.
In other words in the inbox there are two e-mails: one with subject line "abc", and another one with subject line "def".
When I display the e-mail with the subject line "abc", the contents are from the e-mail with the subject line "def" in the in-basket.
What else can be done to correct this problem?

How do I stop auto launch of apps at start

Even when unchecking the box at shutdonw to not repoen apps at start up, the system continues to reopen apps at the next start up.

When user settings are not sticking you can run a reset in the recovery drive. This is not the same step as repair permissions in Disk Utility.

reboot your phone then restart the app updates again. This usually fixes the problem. Also if you have a lot of updates it will try to do too many at once. tap the ones that are downloading and pause all but two at a time. As soon as thoughs go into the installing unpause the next two. If you have too many going at once then during the install it takes too long before it starts the next download on itunes will require a password again so it stops all the update in the middle. The other work around is to update one at a time in the app store instead of hitting the update all button.

IPad2 apps have started crashing when launched

Several of my iPad2 apps have started crashing when launched: flipboard and neflix, to be exact. I have turned off the apps, restarted and done a reset, but that has not helped.

If it's happening on all the apps that you've downloaded from the App Store, but not the Apple built-in ones, then try downloading any free app from the store (as that appears to reset something) and then re-try them - the free app can then be deleted.
If it's happening on all apps then try closing them all completely and then see if they work when you re-open them : from the home screen (i.e.not with any app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of each app to close them, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Why does Messages app automatically start whenever I receive an imessage?

I'm using my mac to try and get some work done, and as a result have apps such as messages closed (I'm trying to focus.) I even have pop-up notifications disabled in the notification center. However, whenever I receive an imessage messages.app automatically opens itself, disrupting my concentration. How can I disable this behavior?

Can you check that imagent (it will be lower case) is running in the Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities) ?
If you have NOT set the option in Messages > Preference > General Section to Be Off-line On Quit then IMAgent should start up when the computer does.
If it have been Force Quit then it should also restart if FaceTime or Messages is started up.
If the .plist has been removed it should be recreated from defaults within the app(s) when the app if started up again.

After installing Mountain Lion, my iTunes app wont start, why ??? It bounces in the dock, then "Unexpectedly Quirs"

Let's keep it simple...
1) Make a new user - the steps are in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199
2) Log into that user, open iTunes, agree, etc. - it will probably work
3) If it does, it tells us that iTunes (the program) is fine but it's encountering something unexpected
4) Go back to your user, and try to open iTunes while holding option and making a new library - like suggested in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
5) Your iTunes will be empty. This is ok. Your files are not touched by this process.
6) If iTunes doesn't quit when loading an empty library, you could try rebuilding the iTunes Library as Apple documents in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
7) If iTunes does quit, it could be trying to grab something - like photo information to sync to your iPad - and that's where it finds the unexpected data. Maybe try moving the iPod Photo Cache? http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1324 should guide you for how to do that.
If you tell us whether it is library-specific, user-specific, or system-wide (happens in both users), we could maybe give you better advice on what's going on.'
If the new user has the same behavior, maybe remove the SC Info folder - there are not many system-wide files iTunes touches. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1389 covers how to remove that invisible folder.
iTunes uses /Applications/iTunes.app, /Users/Shared/SC Info, ~/Music/iTunes/ and ~/Library/Preferences/ and a bunch of other files. I don't think focusing on /Applications/iTunes/app or other system-wide files is going to be as effective as knowing whether the issue is system-wide or user-specific.

Apps wont start with lion

Can anyone help? Ever since I have installed Mountain Lion my Mini Mac starts up with a black screen and it runs through a set of diagnostics, I then have to type in the root mode EXIT for the mac to start up. Not only that it states that it has cleard a whole load of abundant files and then I can continue.
Second problem, I cant get hardly any of the Apps to start up...Like Pages, Numbers itunes does sometimes.
My Mac is at an abundant state...Help!

How can I keep certain apps from starting at login?

I have Break Reminder installed. It isn't compatible with certain accessibility tools. It isn't something that I want to start every time I use the computer. But it does start every time I use the computer. I don't tell the computer to restart apps at start up. I don't list the apps in the Login Items list. It just starts itself. How can I keep it from starting itself?

go to system preferences / Users Groups / Login items
(make sure your lock at bottom left side of window is unlocked) if it isn't you will be asked to insert your user password if you don't have one just hit enter (unlock)
from there you get to choose your startup applications simply add/remove with +/- under the windows
once you made changes don't forget to lock the lock to prevent changes and you should be set

Store and apps doesnt start in windows 8.1

I have installed directly windows 8.1(not upgraded from windows 8), at first my store and apps were working. but after half hour of use none of the apps are starting. a message is coming after starting any of the apps
"The app didn't start in required time"
I have tried everything I can, also reset the pc but still nothing is happening.
not even the loading circle is showing up in the store or any off the apps.

As you said,you have reset your PC, right?
Then, did you reinstall the app?
I think it isn't related to your system. It may be caused by network.
Please try the following group policy to configure Metro App proxy.
1. Open "Local Group Policy Editor": press Win+R, type gpedit.msc, and press enter.
2. Navigate to "Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> Network Isolation"
3. Open "Internet Proxy Servers for Apps" and set the value to your proxy server address like 172.16.0.1:8080.
If it doesn't work, check the event viewer to see if some error log appeared when the issue occurred.
Also, please change a network environment to test it.

After some searching I have found a solution. I had to delete the contents of the following folder:
~/Library/Mail/myemailaccount/.OfflineCache/
Note: replace "myemailaccount" with the appropriate folder on your computer that represents your e-mail account. Once I deleted the contents of this folder (there were 2 files), and restarted Mail, there were no problems.
Hope this helps a few people in the future!
